Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gives candid opinion on MVP talks

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads with 47 points oklahoma city thunder Won 114-110 against detroit pistons in overtime on Monday, which reignited the ongoing MVP conversation during his postgame media interviews.

However, the reigning MVP wanted no part of it. As for Gilgeous-Alexander, it’s not up to him to voice his opinion on why he should win the MVP award in consecutive NBA seasons.

When asked by a reporter to make the case for himself, SGA responded:

“No, I’m good. However, thanks for asking. But yes, I’m good. I’ll let my game talk.”

As far as the MVP conversation is concerned, Gilgeous-Alexander says the debate between fans and analysts is good for the association.

“It’s good for the league. I think it’s a good conversation,” he said.

“It gives people something to talk about. There are a lot of good players in this league. There are a lot of people in the conversation.”

The OKC Thunder big man will still face stiff competition for the award, however, as San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama is considered to be in the top running for this season’s Most Valuable Player.

But judging by her latest comments, it appears Shai Gilgeous-Alexander isn’t upset with her competition. He scored 11 consecutive points before draining the game-winning 3-pointer due to an offensive foul with 4.3 seconds remaining in regulation.

He went 12 of 19 from the floor, 2 of 3 from deep and 21 of 25 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, teammate Ajay Mitchell finished with 14 points, while Chet Holmgren added 13 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

1 Insider not ready to give MVP to Victor Wembanyama over Shai

With the NBA regular season coming to an end, the race for the MVP award has become even more intense. MVP favorites include Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has also returned to the race.

But according to NBA media personality Zach Lowe, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is still in the race for the MVP award. During a recent segment on The Ringer, Lowe explained why he thinks the reigning MVP is the favorite to win back-to-back.

“I think Shai, from start to finish, that’s his MVP. He also has a 400-minute advantage on Wembanyama, which matters. … That’s a lot. When Shai is putting that kind of value on both ends of the floor, it’s not like he’s weak defensively. … And the way he’s shooting, in minutes, if they get the No. 1 seed, I think that’s his MVP,” Lowe. Said. “I think Wembley has a real case. I think he’s got the second spot on my ballot over Jokic…”

Should Gilgeous-Alexander win the 2026 MVP award, he would be the first player to win the award in consecutive seasons since Jokic in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Last year, he became the first player since LeBron James in 2013 to win both MVP and Finals MVP in the same season.

He has played just over 33 minutes per game in 60 games. He averaged 31.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 55.5 percent from the field, 38.8 percent from the 3-point line and 88.8 percent from the free-throw line.

The Thunder are currently 57-15 and, as Lowe mentioned, hold a three-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference standings.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gets ‘clear cut’ MVP endorsement from Carmelo Anthony

As the NBA season approaches, there is intense discussion about who will take home the 2025-2026 MVP trophy. Lakers star Luka Doncic has emerged as a leading contender as the Lakers begin a nine-game winning streak. Jaylen Brown has also received praise for how he has led the Celtics’ success prior to Jayson Tatum’s return from an Achilles injury.

But Hall of Famer and NBC Sports analyst Carmelo Anthony believes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the “clear-cut” favorite for MVP this season.

“The players know who the real MVP is… To me, it’s obvious. I think it’s Shai… This is the best team in the NBA, best player on the team. It’s hard to argue. The guy is averaging 30 and 9. You know what I mean? When you see an MVP, you know.”

gilgeous-alexander the engine is For the Thunder as they have faced some injury challenges this year. He averaged 31.6 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game and 6.6 assists per game on 55.3% shooting. He is also displaying exceptional defense, averaging 1.4 steals per game. Oklahoma City is still on top of the Western Conference and NBA landscape at 56–15. Alexander too

But winning the MVP trophy is all about moments, and for top MVP contenders Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, they can create a moment by playing against each other in April. The Thunder and Lakers will play on April 2 and April 7, which could make for an interesting look at who will ultimately take home one of the NBA’s greatest accolades.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander says Wizards ‘know what they’re doing’ despite 16-54 record

Washington DC. – There’s an old sports adage that the final score is deceiving, and that’s what happened in the Washington Wizards’ 132-111 home loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday. The Thunder led 103–96 after three quarters before pulling away in the final period, but the Wizards held on, earning the respect of reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The three-time All-NBA First Teamer was asked what is his advice For Washington’s youth core postgame, via Double Take Sports’ Carita Park.

He said, “I honestly think they’re on the right path. As we saw tonight, they have guys who compete, and I think that’s the first thing.” “You want guys who play with edge, who aren’t afraid, who just want to go out and fight. Not physically, but in terms of basketball.”

Everyone in the room laughed, as the last comment referred to the viral clash between the two teams just before halftime. After Wizards forward Anthony Gill hit a five-foot shot, Thunder forward Jaylin Williams began scuffling with Wizards forward Justin Champagne as he was about to kick the ball out. Oklahoma City guard Ajay Mitchell then charged forward and jabbed Champagnie, who hit him in the face with an open hand. Michelle charged Champagne, start an all-out brawl Which spread in the fan section of Baseline.

Gilgeous-Alexander pulled Mitchell to the bench, and the fight ended before Champagne, Williams, Mitchell and Thunder guard Cason Wallace exited. Champagnie and Williams received double technical fouls, while Mitchell and Wallace also received technical fouls to add to the conflict.

Gilgeous-Alexander continued after the game, “That’s half the battle in the NBA. Every night, suit up and go to work.” “I think they have that. And then they have some vets, obviously, made some trades with AD [Anthony Davis] and try [Young]. There are two very proven guys in the NBA, so they will help once they get on the floor. well trained, i know bk [head coach Brian Keefe] very well. He was here my freshman year in OKC, so I know what he’s about. [General manager] Desire [Dawkins] Plus, they know what they’re doing. I think they’re on the right track, they check all the boxes. Have to focus on getting better every day, and they will eventually get where they want to go, as long as they come to us.

Thunder provides model for Wizards’ rebuild

Oklahoma City represents the ultimate goal for Washington, as it wins the 2025 NBA Finals and currently leads the league with a 56-16 record. General manager Sam Presti made the move through a number of smart moves like landing Gilgeous-Alexander from the Los Angeles Clippers for Paul George in 2019, drafting All-Stars Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren in the 2022 lottery, acquiring All-Defensive guard Alex Caruso from the Chicago Bulls for Josh Giddy in 2024, and drafting Mitchell in the second round in 2024. Has built the NBA’s deepest roster since. The latter player is averaging 14.2 points on 48.9% shooting (34.8% 3-point), along with 3.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 26.2 minutes.

Dawkins, who held the ranks on Presti’s staff from 2008 to 2023, is leading his own version of the Thunder’s journey. The Gilgeous-Alexander trade marked the beginning of Oklahoma City’s rebuild, as the team lost in the first round of the 2020 playoffs before going on three consecutive losing seasons. Head coach Mark Daigneault won Coach of the Year honors after the team went 57–25 in 2023–24. It was bounced in the second round of the 2024 postseason, but defeated the Indiana Pacers in last year’s Finals.

Dawkins began the Wizards’ rebuild by trading Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns for Chris Paul in the summer of 2023, a move that ultimately led to Young’s deal in January. Along the way, they traded for guard Bilal Coulibaly on draft night, selected big man Alex Sarr, guard Bub Carrington and guard Trey Johnson in the lottery, selected forwards Keyshawn George and Will Riley outside of the lottery, and selected guard Jameer Watkins in the second round last summer. Additionally, they gave Champagny a standard contract last season after emerging from the G League into an NBA rotational piece, and they acquired Davis from the Dallas Mavericks in February without giving up necessary assets.

Now, Washington is finishing its third and final tanking season before landing another top-eight selection in the draft with superstar prospects like BYU’s AJ DiBuntsa, Kansas’ Darrin Peterson and Duke’s Cameron Boozer. While the Thunder never traded for stars as Gilgeous-Alexander was entering his second season in 2019, both organizations dealt away expensive veterans in Beal and George and temporarily sacrificed wins to develop young talent.

Coulibaly, Sarr, Carrington, George and Johnson have all earned Rising Stars honors, while Riley is averaging 14.5 points on 44.2% shooting (37% 3-point) in 33 minutes in March. Watkins, who averaged 8.6 points on 53.7% shooting (40% 3-point) with two steals in March, signed a standard deal in February.

The next step for the Wizards is to learn winning habits as they aim to break into the Eastern Conference playoff picture next season. When Daigneault was asked what habits his team has adopted over the years to get to this level, aside from the classic answers like “hard work” and “talent,” he opened up about ClutchPoints pregame.

“It’s mostly classic answers,” he admitted. “I think if you bring up successful players, like Shai is a great example… there’s no mystery to what he’s doing. He’s doing the very fundamental things you need to do to be great. He’s doing them all the time, consistently, in all situations. But I think it’s pretty fundamental to him and the team. At least we emphasize that. We have talented guys… but it’s nothing good. Individual defense, transition defense, floor spacing, when two If there are people passing to you, can you do it consistently and be disciplined, committed in all situations with all players.

Washington must learn to defend, as they rank last in the NBA with a 120.7 defensive rating. There are plenty of silver linings, however, including Coulibaly getting his shot. The 21-year-old averaged 16 points on 44.2% shooting (41.7% 3-point) in 30.1 minutes in March, which is better than his career average of 10.6 points on 42.5% shooting (31.3% 3-point) in 29.1 minutes. He led the Wizards with 21 points (8-15 FG, 3-5 3-point) in 34 minutes on Saturday.

Keefe, who was an assistant with the Thunder from 2007 to 2015 and 2019–20, spoke about Koulibaly’s performance after the game.

He said, “I think he’s just growing… you know, he’s had some beginnings and endings with some injuries, and I think he’s just finding his rhythm.” “I think he’s taken advantage of his opportunity. We’ll obviously put the ball in his hands. He’s been playing downhill, but he’s playing pretty good basketball here.”

Whether Washington’s young core develops enough to reach Oklahoma City’s level one day remains to be seen, but the team is being rebuilt by two guys who helped develop one of the league’s best teams.

Next up for the Wizards is a road game against the New York Knicks on Sunday at 7:30 PM ET.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s record almost ends in race

We’re officially less than a month away from the end of the 2025-26 regular season, and the door on the MVP race appears to be closing. While Nikola Jokic, Victor Wembanyama and others are trying to improve their resumes, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is on a collision course for his second consecutive MVP award.

Should the Oklahoma City Thunder star accomplish this feat and be named NBA MVP once again, he will join the list of greats to claim this award in back-to-back seasons (not including the ABA): Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic.

Will SGA become the 14th player to win consecutive MVP awards? After breaking Wilt’s record on Thursday, he’s on track to do so.

After recording 35 points in a 104–102 win over the Boston Celtics, Gilgeous-Alexander recorded his 127th consecutive game with 20-plus points, surpassing Chamberlain’s record of 126 games for most consecutive 20-plus point games in NBA history.

This is a historic accomplishment for the SGA, and it’s one of those records that you look at and wonder if anyone will ever surpass this mark again.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said of SGA’s historic success, “Number one, he’s skilled at his craft. There’s no one more precise than him at his craft.” “Number two, the entire life of the streak hasn’t stopped us from having a lot of success on the team and hasn’t stopped his teammates from being successful. An individual streak about scoring hasn’t come at the expense of the team or his teammates.

“He treats everyone in the building with respect from top to bottom. So, he’s obviously a great basketball player, but he’s such a guy that you couldn’t be happier when he accomplishes something like this. So, huge congratulations to him.”

The Thunder have looked like the team to beat over the final few weeks of the regular season, and Gilgeous-Alexander continues to take his game to new heights. Whenever you’re mentioned alongside Wilt, you’re doing something right, and in Gilgeous-Alexander’s case, it could be enough for him to claim the MVP award once again.

Although the Denver Nuggets have been inconsistent recently, Nikola Jokic has been on the heater. Last week, he averaged 25.8 points, 15.5 rebounds, 13.0 assists and 3.3 steals per game, while shooting 55.2 percent from the floor.

Not to mention, Jokic recorded four consecutive triple-doubles, marking the third time this season that he has had four consecutive games with a triple-double. This season, Jokic has 27 triple-doubles in 52 games, which is 15 more such games than Jalen Johnson (12).

While it has been an MVP-like season for Jokic, his 16 missed games due to a knee injury and the Nuggets’ inconsistent play in the stretch run of the season have surrendered the MVP race to Gilgeous-Alexander. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where Jokic can pass Thunder guards at this speed without suffering any injury.

Of all the MVP candidates this year, Victor Vembanyama may have an outside chance of reaching SGA and possibly impacting some first-place votes. That’s because the San Antonio Spurs are 3.5 games behind the Thunder for the top spot in the Western Conference, and they hold the season tiebreaker over Gilgeous-Alexander’s team.

As far as Wemby’s numbers are concerned, he has increased his efficiency and accepted the challenge of competing for the MVP award.

“Right now, I’m taking great care of my body because I want to win MVP and DPOY as well,” Wembanyama told Amazon Prime Crew after Saturday’s 115-102 win over the Charlotte Hornets. “So, I’m just trying to press the gas from now until the end of the season. Really take care of my treatment, take care of my sleep, take care of my routine and perform for my team.”

You have to admire the passion and struggle of the 22-year-old superstar. This season isn’t over yet, and with the Spurs having an outside chance to claim the 1-seed over Oklahoma City, Wembey’s MVP dreams are still alive.

Can Cade Cunningham surpass Nikola Jokic in assists this year and win his first assist title? Currently, Cunningham leads the league in total assists (603) by a wide margin, but his 10.1 assists per game average still trails Jokic’s 10.5 assists per game.

However, Cunningham has shown some strides recently, averaging 11.9 assists over his last eight contests. Over this span, the Detroit Pistons guard has tallied six double-doubles, bringing his total double-doubles on the season to 37, which is the fourth most double-doubles in the league.

The Pistons remain the top team in the Eastern Conference standings, and Cunningham is the driving force behind their success. Don’t be surprised if he gets some first- and second-place votes for MVP this year. Still, he won’t get enough money to overtake Gilgeous-Alexander.

*Can only miss a maximum of 5 more games to remain eligible.

Luka Doncic is back in the top five of the NBA MVP rankings after briefly falling behind Jaylen Brown. The main reason they’ve taken over the No. 5 spot and could potentially jump higher between now and the end of the year is the Los Angeles Lakers’ surge in the standings at season’s end.

Los Angeles has won five straight games and eight of the last nine games overall to momentarily take over the sole possession of the third seed in the Western Conference. As far as Doncic’s MVP campaign goes, he has had his fingerprints on the Lakers’ success, averaging 33.2 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game during a nine-game span for the Lakers.

Doncic has had incredible performances recently, scoring at least 30 points in five straight games, and that includes two noteworthy performances. The first was a 51-point game with nine triples made against the Bulls on Thursday, and he followed that with a 30-11-13 game with game-winning shots in overtime against Jokic and the Nuggets.

There’s no denying Luka’s dominance at the moment, which is why he’s back in the top five of the NBA MVP rankings. If his and the Lakers’ success continues into the final weeks of the regular season, there’s a chance they can continue to make a run in this race.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s lightbulb moment after extending 20-point streak

OKLAHOMA CITY – Snapping a 63-year-old streak with his 127 consecutive 20+ point performances in a 104-102 win against the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander almost saw his streak end there. Midway through the fourth quarter, despite maintaining a 12-point lead, it was still behind by 10 points. Then, Gilgeous-Alexander went into closeout mode, helping them save their streak and lead a 116–103 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

After scoring five points on back-to-back possessions, including a contested 3-pointer from Timberwolves All-Star Anthony Edwards, Gilgeous-Alexander drew a shooting foul on Edwards to complete a 3-point game to reach 20 points. During the Timberwolves’ ensuing timeout, Gilgeous-Alexander looked up and realized What was the standing ovation at the Paycom Center for?

Gilgeous-Alexander said, “I didn’t realize until they were yelling after the free throws. I was a little confused.” “Then I realized, ‘Oh, this, the 20-point streak.’ Hello friends tonight. He did a great job of taking what the game gave him and being prepared. I had 10 assists tonight, and they were ready to hit shots. So, hats off to those guys.”

Gilgeous-Alexander’s 20 points made him one of three Thunder players to finish with 20+ points in Sunday’s win, joining All-Star Chet Holmgren (21 points) and Isaiah Joe (20 points), who shot 8 of 14 from the floor, including four threes. Jared McCain added 15 points on 5 of 9 3-point attempts.

Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander extended his streak of consecutive 20+ point games to the most in NBA history by scoring 10 points in the final six minutes of Sunday’s 13-point win (116-103) against the Timberwolves. Gilgeous-Alexander extended his 20+ point streak from the free-throw line on a 3-point play, drawing a shooting foul on Timberwolves All-Star Anthony Edwards.

After the win, Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on the final frame, reminding reporters that the Thunder would go beyond doing everything in their power to ensure a win to continue their historic 20+ point game streak.

“I didn’t care about anything other than winning the game, like always,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “Tonight’s game was very sloppy, low-scoring, they’re obviously a good defense, we’re a good defense; so, it’s no surprise. To me, these types of things never matter. It’s always about getting out of here with a W.

“If I have a night like tonight, and we win for the rest of the season like we won tonight, I’ll be the happiest person on Earth. So, all that matters is winning.”

The Thunder will look to extend their winning streak when they begin their five-game road trip with Tuesday’s matchup against the Magic.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander extends 20-point streak to 128 games

Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recently made history by breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s streak of scoring at least 20 points in consecutive games. In the next game after breaking the record, the incredible streak found itself in serious danger.

The reigning NBA MVP was well below the 20-point mark in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s contest with the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, as they have done repeatedly during the streak, they turned it on in the final 12 minutes. Gilgeous-Alexander eventually drained a jumper after a foul on Anthony Edwards late in the fourth before sinking a free throw and scoring 20 points for his 128th consecutive game.

The Thunder already had the game in hand, and SGA gave a hearty applause after seeing their squad close in on a 116–103 victory over their Western Conference rivals.

Gilgeous-Alexander only had 10 points in the fourth quarter, so he really had to step things up to keep the historic streak going.

Although he still got 20 points, it was far from Gilgeous-Alexander’s best performance in Sunday’s win over Minnesota. The MVP favorite shot just 7 of 22 from the field to score his 20 points, but he added 10 assists in the process.

This is a big win in the standings for the Thunder, who are still trying to avoid the Spurs for the top seed in the Western Conference playoff picture. With the Pistons struggling a bit at the top of the Eastern Conference, the top seed in the West will likely mean home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Gilgeous-Alexander has been one of the most consistent forces in basketball throughout the season and over the past few years, and this streak is a perfect example of that. Even on his worst days, he can keep it going and that’s what he showed on Sunday.

How Kobe, MJ paved the way for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to break Wilt’s record

OKLAHOMA CITY – After breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s record for most consecutive 20+ point games in NBA history, Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander revealed the players he most admired growing up. After Thunder coach Mark Daigneault put Gilgeous-Alexander’s streak into perspective, SGA reflected on the legends who came before him, such as Hall of Fame guards Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson.

Three Hall of Fame guards and the most memorable shooters helped mold Gilgeous-Alexander’s attack, including his knack for mid-range looks, a dying art of the game that is frowned upon in the modern, analytically-driven era.

Gilgeous-Alexander said, “I don’t think it’s necessarily me. I shoot honestly and I fell in love with the mid-range jump shot because of guys like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. Allen Iverson. If anything, he changed the game and how it’s played.” “They’re my favorite players and ones I try to model my game after. So, I try to apply that to today’s NBA. But if anything, it’s them.”

SGA has revealed that his father showed him Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson when he was a child. Kobe Bryant was his favorite. And as Gilgeous-Alexander continues to progress toward cementing his place as one of the greatest NBA players in league history, the win remains the most important amid the defending champions’ quest for a repeat.

Gilgeous-Alexander said, “If we weren’t winning none of the things I accomplished would matter. And I probably wouldn’t have most of them if we weren’t winning.” “And I know it and understand it. That’s why you play the game.”

The Thunder extended their winning streak to seven in a 104–102 win against the Boston Celtics, amid Gilgeous-Alexander’s 127th consecutive 20+ point game. SGA finished with 35 points.

Before Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s postgame media availability, head coach Mark Daigneault discussed what makes his reigning MVP so special. Daigneault It has been told Gilgeous-Alexander as a leading scorer, team leader and individual.

“Number one, he’s skilled at his craft. Nobody is more precise at his craft than him. Number two, the streak his entire life hasn’t stopped us from having a ton of team success and hasn’t stopped his teammates from being successful as well,” Daigneault said. “The individual scoring streak hasn’t come at the expense of the team or his teammates. And again, great father, great husband, great teammate.

“He treats everyone in the building with respect from top to bottom. So, he’s obviously a great basketball player, but he’s such a guy that you couldn’t be happier when he accomplishes something like this. So, huge congratulations to him.”

Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder will look to extend their seven-game winning streak when they host the Timberwolves at Paycom Center on Sunday.

Mark Daigneault puts Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s streak into perspective

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault did his best to put All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s new record-breaking streak of scoring 20+ points in 127 consecutive games into words best suited for the reigning MVP. After breaking the 63-year-old record, Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on how he has emerged as one of the NBA’s elite scorers before Daigneault delivered his flowers to the SGA.

Talking about who Gilgeous-Alexander is as a player, a leader and a person, Daigneault it took time to explain What makes his All-Star guard so special during his post-game media availability?

“Number one, he’s skilled at his craft. Nobody is more precise at his craft than him. In a matchup against the Celtics’ MVP candidate Jaylen Brown, who finished with 34 points, seven assists, six rebounds, two steals and a block, Gilgeous-Alexander exchanged key buckets to tie the game. Then, Thunder All-Star Chet Holmgren was fouled on a rebound, sending him to the line for two with 0.8 seconds remaining in the game.

Holmgren sealed the win for the Thunder by making two free throws, putting Oklahoma City ahead by two. He finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander believes his improvement every season over the past few years has made him the leading scorer he is today. Adding a string of most consecutive 20+ point performances to his trophy haul, Gilgeous-Alexander explained that this was no coincidence, but a testament to his dedication.

“Over the years, I’ve just built my game, watched the defense, and just attacked the defense with the tools I have,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “It feels like every year I’m getting better and better at doing this, and I think that’s why. I just watch coverages, learn from them, try to get better, and implement them whenever possible.”

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault watched Thursday’s historic night, followed by a 129-126 win on Monday in another duel against Nikola Jokic and an MVP candidate in the rival Nuggets, where Gilgeous-Alexander tied Wilt Chamberlain’s streak for consecutive 20+ point performances, and became only the second player to finish with at least 35 points, 15 assists and zero turnovers.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander breaks Wilt Chamberlain’s 63-year-old 20-point game record

Whenever a player is being mentioned in the same sentence as Wilt Chamberlain, he has done something extremely rare and historic. That’s what Shai Gilgeous-Alexander accomplished, as the reigning MVP of the Oklahoma City Thunder broke a record that no one has come close to since 1963.

With another 20-plus-point scoring night, this time against the Boston Celtics on Thursday, Gilgeous-Alexander recorded his 127th consecutive game with 20-plus points, surpassing Chamberlain’s record of 126 straight games between 1961 and 1963.

This unfathomable record now belongs to the Thunder superstar, and SGA can extend his streak even further to keep it within striking distance, as Wilt did before.

Oddly enough, Chamberlain holds the record for most consecutive 20-point games (126), and also had the second-longest streak, ahead of Gilgeous-Alexander, at 92 games between 1963 and 1964. The only reason Wilt’s streak ended in 1963 and he had to restart was due to him being ejected just four minutes into the game for “abusive language” towards the officials.

It’s why Chamberlain’s streak of scoring at least 20 points in 126 consecutive games ended, and it’s why Gilgeous-Alexander’s name now tops the list in NBA lore.

This is a remarkable feat for Gilgeous-Alexander, and it puts him in the same great position as Chamberlain, who has all of his nearly-untouchable records, as well as LeBron James and his streak of 1,297 straight games scoring more than 10 points. Perhaps this is the next record on Gilgeous-Alexander’s to-do list, but he still has a long way to go to catch LeBron, as anyone would.

Passing Chamberlain is the latest major accomplishment for Gilgeous-Alexander, just eight years into his career.

The 27-year-old superstar won his first championship with the Thunder last season and was crowned the 2025 NBA Finals MVP. He also led the league in scoring until being named the 2024–25 NBA MVP. With approximately four weeks remaining in the 2025–26 season, Gilgeous-Alexander is considered the favorite to once again win the MVP award.

After tying Wilt’s record with a 35-point performance on Sunday, which included a game-winning 3-pointer against the Denver Nuggets, Gilgeous-Alexander took a moment to reflect on the history he made, and gave a humble response to what the accomplishment means to him.

“It’s still a lot to wrap my head around,” SGA said. “To be honest, I don’t even try to think about it, especially during the season. There’s a lot going on. A lot of things have to go right to get what you ultimately want. I’m 100 percent focused on that.

“Obviously, it’s special to interact with a guy like that.”

Not many players ever come close to recording similar numbers or breaking the record held by Wilt Chamberlain. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has done so in his eighth season, as he is the new record holder for most consecutive games with over 20 points with 127 games and counting.

How Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made NBA history in more ways than one vs. the Nuggets

In addition to breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s record for most consecutive 20+ point games in NBA history, Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander accomplished another feat that only one player has accomplished. After joining Chamberlain in a special group, Gilgeous-Alexander joined Los Angeles Lakers All-Star LeBron James during the same game – a 129-126 win against MVP candidate Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored back-to-back threes between the Thunder’s final two possessions, including a game-winner, finished with 35 points, 15 assists and zero turnovers in Monday’s win against the Nuggets. Gilgeous-Alexander joins James as the only two players in NBA history to finish a game with 35+ points, 15+ assists and zero turnovers.

James finished 2018 with 35 points, 17 assists and zero turnovers in a 132–129 win against the Toronto Raptors. He became the first NBA player to do so at the time, and now, he has company.

Gilgeous-Alexander equaled Chamberlain’s 63-year-old record, leading the Thunder to a three-point win against their rivals in the Nuggets, whom the defending champions defeated 4-3 in the Western Conference semi-finals last season. The Thunder also handed the Nuggets their second loss in 10 days, following a classic 127-121 overtime thriller.

For Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, it’s important to focus on winning rather than focusing on breaking a 63-year-old record to accomplish such a rare feat in NBA history. Then, if that wasn’t enough for Thunder fans, Gilgeous-Alexander’s game-winning three on the Nuggets sealed an unforgettable night at Paycom Center.

gilgeous-alexander explain why Not paying attention to Chamberlain’s phenomenal record helped him get there.

Gilgeous-Alexander said after the win, “It still lingers in my mind. To be honest, I try not to think about it, especially during the season. There’s a lot going on. A lot of things have to go right to get what you want ultimately.” “That’s my 100 percent focus, especially in a basketball context. It’s special to interact with a guy like that (Wilt Chamberlain).

“It’s crazy to think that where I was 10 years ago, I would be here today. You work hard. You trust the process. You look up, and great things can happen to you, and I’m proof of that.”

Gilgeous-Alexander will try to set the NBA record for most consecutive 20+ point games when the Thunder host the Celtics on Thursday, making it 127.

Stephen A. Smith reveals how Jaylen Brown could steal MVP from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

In the minds of many NBA fans and prognosticators, Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shut down the MVP conversation with a 129-126 win over the Denver Nuggets last night. Alexander rose up and hit a three-pointer that sealed the hard-fought victory, and broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record for consecutive 20-point games on the night. But, according to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith believes the race is not over yet, as Celtics star Jaylen Brown still has a shot at a title.

He explained his theory on Tuesday Morning Edition take first.

“Jaylen Brown is one of the top two candidates for league MVP. We’ve got two road games this week in San Antonio and then against Shea Butters and Oklahoma City. Now, Jaylen Brown, that’s going to go a long way for us to see…You see, we don’t need to see Shea Butters. Because when you look at Shea Butters, he’s already the league MVP. He’s already an NBA Finals MVP. He’s already an NBA champion. Jaylen Brown is too, but Jaylen Brown was the number two option.

Smith continued, “Now you’ve got to understand, even though you’ve got Tatum back, he’s still feeling his way back. It’s still you, Jaylen Brown. Where are you going to get to San Antonio, when you get to Oklahoma City, what are you going to do?”

While Alexander has been the steady hand guiding the defending NBA Champions to another unprecedented regular season, Brown definitely has a claim to a shot at MVP after the season he had for the Celtics. Both Alexander and Brown are featured in ClutchPoints senior NBA reporter Brett Siegel’s latest “MVP Monday.” Alexander sits comfortably at the top of Seagull’s rankings while Brown sits at number five behind Cade Cunningham, Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic.

In 57 games played, Brown is averaging 28.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game with one steal. He is shooting 48% from the field and 34.8% from three-point range. He has been the catalyst for the Celtics’ success as they have remained in the conversation without Jayson Tatum for most of the season.

But it’s certainly hard to top the MVP moments provided by Alexander, especially when the Thunder have also dealt with injuries to key contributors. Still, the Thunder and Celtics are meeting on Thursday, and a lot of questions will be answered in a head-to-head matchup that could be an NBA Finals preview.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander talks about Wilt Chamberlain before setting record

Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is one 20+ points shy of Hall of Fame center Wilt Chamberlain’s record. It has been over 64 years since Chamberlain scored 20+ points in 126 consecutive games. Gilgeous-Alexander extended his streak to 125 in the Thunder’s 104–97 win against the Golden State Warriors, leading his team with 27 points as the defending champions earned their 50th win of the regular season.

According to ESPN’s Tim McMahon, Gilgeous-Alexander discussed how much he knows about Chamberlain.

“Not much, other than that he was very impressive,” Gilgeous-Alexander recently told ESPN. “Based on the data, he did what he wanted and how he wanted.”

Chamberlain is known for his dominant statistics, including his infamous 100-point performance in 1962, which stands as the most points scored in a single game in NBA history. However, there is no footage.

“To be honest, it almost seems like a mythical creature,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “it’s not real.”

Still, Wilt Chamberlain’s record of consecutive 20+ point performances remains real, and Gilgeous-Alexander is on the verge of standing next to Chamberlain, a feat it took an NBA player 64 years to reach.

Gilgeous-Alexander surpassed Chamberlain’s second-best 20+ point record earlier this season when he scored 26 points in a 123–115 win against the Portland Blazers in December to extend his streak to 94 consecutive games. SGA is averaging 31.6 points per game this season, second best in the NBA this season.

The Thunder’s reigning MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, will face the runner-up, Nuggets All-Star Nikola Jokic, as the two leading candidates for this year’s award meet for a rematch of last week’s overtime thriller. The Thunder defeated the Nuggets in a 127–121 victory.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who returned from an abdominal injury in the overtime win against the Nuggets, will look to extend the Thunder’s winning streak to six, tying NBA history with his 126th consecutive 20+ point performance.

Why Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is not thinking of breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s record?

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hit a game-winning triple to beat the Denver Nuggets 129-126, tying Wilt Chamberlain’s record for most consecutive 20+ point games in NBA history. In a duel between the two leading MVP candidates, Gilgeous-Alexander topped Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets with a 35-point performance, and finished with back-to-back threes with just 3.3 seconds left in the game.

A night when Gilgeous-Alexander equaled NBA history Most consecutive 20+ point gamesHe explained how achieving such an astonishing league record had not even crossed his mind until his postgame media availability, he said.

Gilgeous-Alexander said, “It’s still a lot to wrap around in my mind. To be honest, I try not to think about it, especially during the season. There’s a lot going on. A lot of things have to go right to get what you ultimately want.” “That’s my 100 percent focus, especially in a basketball context. It’s special to interact with a guy like that (Wilt Chamberlain).

“It’s crazy to think that where I was 10 years ago, I would be here today. You work hard. You trust the process. You look up, and great things can happen to you, and I’m proof of that.”

After Gilgeous-Alexander connected on his second-to-last 3-pointer to give the Thunder a four-point cushion, Jokic responded with a 3-pointer of his own. At the same time, Jaylin Williams drew a foul on Christian Braun, who tied the game at the free-throw line (126). Then, SGA sealed the Thunder’s victory with another triple.

He also went 14 of 21 from the floor, including 3 of 7 from deep, with 15 assists, nine rebounds, one steal and one block. Jokic recorded a triple-double (32 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists) and one block.

Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander equaled Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record and then left an indelible mark with Nuggets All-Star Nikola Jokic at the end of this year’s MVP race. One could argue that Gilgeous-Alexander has just caught up with him in the race Game-winning 3-pointerAmid a 35-point performance, the shorthanded Thunder managed to defeat the Nuggets for the second time in 10 days.

Without Thunder starters Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein, Gilgeous-Alexander led his team to a tough win against the Nuggets. In a game that went down to the wire, SGA helped the defending champions earn the victory while sending a message to the Nuggets and the rest of the Western Conference about the reigning MVP’s dominance.

The Thunder are on a six-game winning streak.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander equals Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record

When it comes to NBA records, Wilt Chamberlain has many of them, especially when it comes to scoring. But during the Oklahoma City Thunder’s game against the Denver Nuggets on Monday, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander tied one of Chamberlain’s NBA records, and he will surpass it in the next game.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the NBA record was held by Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who tied Wilt Chamberlain for most consecutive games with at least 20 points. Chamberlain’s record stood for over 60 years and was 126 consecutive games. Gilgeous-Alexander will get a chance to build on that during the Thunder’s game against the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

While the Thunder’s game against the Nuggets was still in progress as of publication, Gilgeous-Alexander had 25 points while shooting 11-of-16 from the field (68.8 percent), 1-of-3 from the 3-point line and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. By that point, he also had eight rebounds and 12 assists in 32 minutes.

Reigning MVP and Finals MVP, Gilgeous-Alexander has the Thunder in prime position to not only reach the NBA Finals once again, but potentially win back-to-back championships.

The Thunder star has appeared in 53 games this season, averaging a little over 33 minutes per game. He averaged 31.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.4 steals with splits of 54.9 percent shooting from the field, 38.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 89.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

The No. 11 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Gilgeous-Alexander has become a franchise cornerstone of the Thunder after being traded to the LA Clippers in the 2019 offseason.

Watch Shai Gilgeous-Alexander pull up Wild’s game-winning 3 vs. Nuggets

The Oklahoma City Thunder were missing several key guys heading into another high-intensity contest against the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. They did not include Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein and Alex Caruso, to name a few. But as long as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is on the court, the Thunder are almost impossible to stop.

Try as the Nuggets might, Gilgeous-Alexander may just have his numbers. Despite Nikola Jokic’s best efforts to save the Nuggets from dead, the Thunder ultimately won 129-126, thanks to Bonkers Game-Winning Stepback Triple From the current MVP.

With 8.5 seconds left in the game, Gilgeous-Alexander received the ball from Ajay Mitchell out of bounds. The reigning MVP had Spencer Jones draped over him, but it didn’t matter. Gilgeous-Alexander then stepped on Jones before stopping on a dime and then pulled to his right for a tough game-winning triple from which the Nuggets could not come back.

There were about two seconds left on the clock after Gilgeous-Alexander made a three, but the Nuggets no longer had any timeouts. As a result, Aaron Gordon had to throw a layup from approximately 90 feet, which missed the left side of the rim.

This game once again had playoff intensity written all over it, and it will be a treat for neutral observers to see these two heavyweights lose once again in the postseason stage.

Gilgeous-Alexander has a lot of critics due to being an alleged free-throw merchant. But make no mistake, he is the best pure scorer in the NBA. He can reach his location at will, and remains efficient no matter who guards him. His entire life has been consistent, as he once said, and it shows: He has now scored 20 points or more in 126 consecutive games.

In the win over the Nuggets, Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points, nine rebounds and 15 assists in a complete destruction of the Thunder’s biggest rival.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander reveals his dagger-3 over Draymond Green

OKLAHOMA CITY – In a game where the Oklahoma City Thunder overcame a 14-point deficit, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hit a dagger-3 over the Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green with 42.4 seconds remaining to help secure a 104–97 win. While All-Star Chet Holmgren led the Thunder to a win against the New York Knicks on Wednesday, it was Gilgeous-Alexander who gave Oklahoma City its 50th win of the regular season.

He led the way with 27 points, five assists and five rebounds. After the game, Gilgeous-Alexander described draining Important 3-Pointer Over Green, giving the Thunder a five-point lead.

“In those moments, I just try to get something I’m comfortable shooting,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “And over the years, I’ve tried to work on things, and try to add to that bag that I can go anywhere on the floor. It doesn’t matter which way they’re forcing me. In that game, Drummond was forcing me to go to my right. So, I knew I’d be able to get that shot regardless.

“Just stepped into it with confidence, shot it, and whether I made it or missed, I was going to shoot it the same way, and luckily, this time, it went in.”

Gilgeous-Alexander also gave green its flowersReminding reporters that Green has been one of the league’s better defenders for more than a decade.

“Multiple DPOYs. Multiple defensive teams. Multiple championships. He’s been the architect of their championship defense for a decade,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “As an offensive player you don’t get a better look than that. It was great. It was fun. Moments and matchups, and opportunities like this are why you play to really test yourself, and see where you are against the best. Tonight was no different.”

Draymond Green finished with 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals for the Warriors. Gil Santos’ double-double (22 points, 11 rebounds) led Golden State, and Brandin Podziemski added 17 points.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on battle-tested Thunder win

Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander believes Saturday’s game, which went down against Draymond Green and the Warriors, is good for the defending champions. Despite injuries to starters Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein, the Thunder have found success relying on their supporting cast, including forward Jared McCain, Isaiah Joe and veteran forward Kenrich Williams.

For Gilgeous-Alexander, fighting through adversity to win games that come down to the wire, like Saturday’s win against the Warriors, will only make them a stronger team heading into the postseason.

“It was good for us,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “When the games matter most, they turn into that. In some possession games, you have to perform on both ends of the floor to get the W. Both teams want it. Both teams are in position to get it, and the team that executes the fundamentals and execution and does the right things is going to win the game.

“The more times you can repeat it in the regular season and get those experiences, it only helps,” Gilgeous-Alexander concluded.

Joe finished with 18 points and four rebounds against the Warriors, and Williams added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The Thunder, with the best record in the NBA (50–15), are the first team to reach 50 wins this season.

Warriors’ Steve Kerr gives major props to ‘clever’ Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for hunting fouls

Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors did not lead once in a 104–97 loss against All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder, after erasing a 14-point deficit. The Thunder regained the lead before putting the Warriors away in the fourth quarter. Kristaps Porzingis played only his second game since his trade from the Atlanta Hawks, but it was Gilgeous-Alexander who drained a dagger-3 down the stretch.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 27 points on 6-for-15 from the floor and 14-of-15 from the free-throw line, which came during Kerr’s postgame media availability. Kerr criticized Gilgeous-Alexander’s approach, which was a subject of debate among many NBA circles; However, warriors are prominent Coach gives credit to reigning MVP.

“Well, he’s incredibly smart, and he knows how to make contact, and it’s all within the rules,” Kerr said. “I don’t have a problem with Shai; I have a problem with the rules. As a league, too much off-arm – we hardly allow defenses to protect the ball.

So, if you allow the offensive player to push off-arm to create space, it becomes really difficult defensively because you can’t get your arm inside. If you put your hand in, everyone in the league will do what Shai does, what James Harden does. They’ll put a hook on your arm and it’s all part of the rules.”

For Warriors’ Steve Kerr, the rule change is important, rather than blaming Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the foul.

“More power to all the individual players, but as a league, we need to adapt and adjust,” Kerr said. “Players, year after year, take advantage of the rules, and they’re smart; they know what they’re doing.”

Gui Santos’ double-double (22 points, 11 rebounds) led the Warriors. Brandin Podziemski finished with 17 points, six assists and six rebounds, and Draymond Green added 16 points, five assists and two steals.

Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy does not consider Kristaps Porzingis a rental, citing the 7-foot center as an important part of his team’s future. According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater and Ramona Shelburne, despite Porzingis’ health setbacks over the past two seasons, Dunleavy addressed the veteran center’s future with the team.

“We see him as more than a rental,” Dunleavy said. “We think he can help our team this year, improve our playoff position, and then moving forward that’s what we’re looking for.”

The Warriors conclude their three-game road trip on Monday against the Jazz.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hilariously roasts Jalen Williams for outfit

The Oklahoma City Thunder are officially the hottest team in basketball, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander officially has the funniest teammate in the league. Following a gritty 104-97 win over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night, the Thunder extended their winning streak to five games, but the real fireworks came during the post-game show.

Gilgeous-Alexander had a stellar performance on the court, finishing with 27 points and setting the pace against a Golden State defense that struggled to maintain its rhythm. However, when he was interviewed by the “Inside the NBA” crew, the conversation immediately shifted from his jump shot to Jalen Williams’ wardrobe. Williams, a versatile rising star from Oklahoma City, arrived on the field wearing an outfit described by many fans as a designer poncho.

The TNT crew asked the superstar guard what he thought of the look. Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t hesitate to take the bait, and cheekily compared the high-fashion piece to a common household item.

“Yeah, my wife has one of those at home,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, smiling. “I think they’re called Snuggies. That’s what we call them. You wear them and that night, watch a movie in the Snuggie.”

The “Snuggie” comment quickly spread across social media, highlighting the loose, confident culture that was developing in Oklahoma City. While the team is young, they play with a level of maturity that belies their age, except, perhaps, when it comes to roasting each other’s outfits.

On the field, the Warriors struggled to break into the Thunder’s defense. Despite a spirited effort from Golden State’s veterans, Oklahoma City’s depth and transition play proved to be the difference. With the win, the Thunder continued to solidify themselves as a legitimate threat in the Western Conference.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander back on OKC’s injury report ahead of Bulls matchup

Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been ruled out of Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Bulls after giving positive feedback to reporters following his first two games back from an abdominal injury. Gilgeous-Alexander will miss the first leg of the Thunder’s back-to-back, which ends on Wednesday against the New York Knicks. He’ll likely be back to take on the Knicks.

Starting center Isaiah Hartenstein was added to Gilgeous-Alexander on the Thunder’s injury report as players ruled out of Tuesday’s game. Hartenstein returned from a calf injury on Friday. Both Thunder players missed overtime in Friday’s 127-121 win against the Denver Nuggets and will also miss Tuesday’s game against the Bulls due to their respective injuries.

Jalen Williams (right hamstring), Ajay Mitchell (abdominal strain, left ankle), and Brandon Carlson (lower back strain) are out, while Nikola Topic is on assignment with the Thunder’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting, five assists, four rebounds and four steals in Sunday’s 100-87 win against the Dallas Mavericks.

It was difficult for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to watch the Thunder compete against the Nuggets in overtime on Friday, even if the defending champions won. Fortunately for Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder defeated the Mavericks in regulation, earning a 13-point win on the road.

After the win, a reporter asked Gilgeous-Alexander how his body was feeling after playing his first two games since returning from an abdominal injury.

“Okay,” Gilgeous-Alexander replied. “I ramped up the workouts before the games, I knew I was coming back. The guys who helped me with the workouts did a great job building them into game legs. So, I feel great. Cardio-wise, I don’t feel like I missed a beat.”

The Thunder improved to 47–15.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s victorious comeback against Nikola Jokic takes him back to No. 1 spot

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic, two players who have jockeyed for the top spot in the NBA MVP rankings all season, have played two games against each other so far this season. The Oklahoma City Thunder and SGA claimed the first matchup, setting up a highly anticipated game between these two foes on Friday.

Once again, the Thunder were victorious over the Denver Nuggets, winning 127–121 in overtime. Although Jokic had 23 points, 17 rebounds and 14 assists in the game for his league-leading 22nd triple-double of the season, it was Gilgeous-Alexander who grabbed the headlines with 36 points in his first game after suffering an abdominal strain before the All-Star break.

It was a big game for Gilgeous-Alexander to get back into action, but this head-to-head matchup against the three-time MVP certainly mattered to the defending league MVP. Besides being a chance for the Thunder to extend their lead in the Western Conference standings, it was a chance for Gilgeous-Alexander to prove that he should win back-to-back MVP awards.

Well, after another strong performance against Jokic and the Nuggets, the Oklahoma City star is back in the top spot in the NBA MVP rankings with six weeks remaining in the regular season.

There are two more showdowns left against these two MVP candidates, and these battles will undoubtedly carry equal importance in helping determine this year’s MVP. However, there is still an outside chance for others to steal the first-place votes.

Cade Cunningham is having a great season and has extended the Detroit Pistons’ lead to the 1st-seed in the East. Jaylen Brown has led the Boston Celtics to the second-best record in the East without Jayson Tatum, and Luka Doncic leads the league in scoring for the Los Angeles Lakers.

And then there’s Victor Wembanyama, who continues to lead the San Antonio Spurs, who are just three games behind Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder in the West standings, and who has dominated Oklahoma City this season.

Can any of these other MVP candidates surpass Jokic or Gilgeous-Alexander over the next several weeks? This is where the MVP rankings currently stand, now that SGA is back on top.

Previous ranking: #2

2025-26 season stats: 51 games, 31.8 points, 6.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 55.1 FG%, 38.1 3P%

*Only a maximum of 6 more games can be left to remain eligible.

Gilgeous-Alexander missed nine consecutive games before returning against Jokic and the Nuggets on Friday night, meaning he is only allowed to miss six more games for the remainder of the season to remain eligible for season-ending honors and awards such as MVP.

Gilgeous-Alexander did not look stiff at any point in this game, as he made 12 of 29 shots from the floor and scored 36 points, while also recording nine assists. He followed that performance up with another 30-point performance on Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks, leading Oklahoma City to two consecutive wins.

The Thunder are now three games ahead of the Spurs for the 1-seed in the Western Conference, and Gilgeous-Alexander has moved closer to history with his two big-scoring performances since returning from injury.

Gilgeous-Alexander has now scored at least 20 points in 123 straight games, meaning he is three games away from tying Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 126 consecutive games with 20-plus points.

2. Nikola Jokic – Denver Nuggets*

*A maximum of 1 more game can be missed to remain eligible.

As good as Jokic’s numbers may look, he hasn’t looked like himself since returning from his hyperextended left knee.

In the 13 games that Jokic has played since returning from a knee injury, the Nuggets star has averaged 26.8 points, 13.8 rebounds and 9.2 assists per game, while shooting 49 percent from the floor. Obviously, these are MVP-like stats, but what stands out is his 4.1 turnovers per game during this span.

Jokic’s efficiency has declined, his shooting splits have decreased, and turnovers are a concern. Needless to mention, Denver is not playing well overall and is now down to the 5-seed in the Western Conference.

These are the main reasons why Jokic has fallen behind Gilgeous-Alexander in the MVP race.

3. Cade Cunningham – Detroit Pistons

2025-26 season stats: 53 games, 25.5 points, 9.8 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 46.0 FG%, 33.2 3P%

Besides Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic, if there is another player who needs to be voted for MVP this season, it has to be Cade Cunningham. Aside from the “feel-good” story with the Detroit Pistons, Cunningham has arguably been the best full guard in the league this season, making a greater two-way impact than Gilgeous-Alexander.

Only Jokic has provided more assists than Cunningham this year, and what the Pistons’ star has done to lead his team to the top of the East standings is remarkable. Not only is he doing this with his scoring, but Cade has set a tough standard for how the Pistons will play every night.

He doesn’t back down from any opponent and Cunningham takes on his opponent for the full 48 minutes and puts all the pressure of the game on them. It’s what’s allowed Jalen Duren to have a breakout All-Star campaign, and it’s what’s allowed this young Pistons team to suddenly go from being the favorite to make it to the NBA Finals in the East.

Between rarely missing a game and being on the team with the best winning percentage in the entire NBA, Cunningham is definitely in the MVP race with SGA and Jokic. Quite honestly, if you look at the MVP race from the perspective of a player who has exceeded expectations at the top of the league, Cunningham Is MVP. If you ask JB Bickerstaff, he’d agree.

4. Victor Wembanyama – San Antonio Spurs*

*Can only miss a maximum of 4 more games to remain eligible.

Since the All-Star break, Victor Wembanyama has averaged 19.2 points, 12.0 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per game, while shooting 42.7 percent from the floor. His plus-minus stats over his last six games are among the best in the league, but Wembley’s MVP case has unfortunately come down to where the San Antonio Spurs finish in the West standings.

Should the Spurs move on from Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder, it would be difficult to deny Wembley the MVP award as he will have the numbers and best record in the NBA to back it up.

However, for the moment, what Gilgeous-Alexander has done with the best record in the West is surpassing Vembanyama’s success. While many would argue that this is an individual award that should be given to the league’s best player throughout the season, team success always plays a role in the race for this award each year.

This season is no different, and while Wembley can increase his MVP odds by racking up his playoffs in the stretch run of the season, the Spurs will still need to pass the Thunder in the standings to win the MVP.

The only MVP case for Luka Doncic at this point might be that he leads the league in scoring, and his nearly triple-double numbers are the best of his career. While both of those things may be true, one can’t argue with Doncic being ahead of any of the other four players in the MVP rankings.

Not only is Doncic behind the level of play of Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic, but expectations for both Cunningham and Wembanyama make more sense in this race as well. In addition, the Los Angeles Lakers have not been playing well recently and are in danger of falling into the play-in zone of the West standings.

Very few players have won the MVP award while their team was not at the top of the league standings, and those who did had historic seasons that will forever be remembered in NBA history. That’s not the case with Doncic this year.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander injury update after OKC vs. Mavericks win

In his second game back from an abdominal injury, All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 100-87 win against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. Gilgeous-Alexander guided the Thunder to a 16-point comeback in a 127-121 win against the Denver Nuggets on Friday before his team won in overtime.

In Sunday’s game, Gilgeous-Alexander followed up his 36 points in 34 minutes against the Nuggets with a 30-point performance against the Mavericks in Sunday’s win, and gave an update on the injury to reporters during his postgame media availability.

“Okay,” Gilgeous-Alexander replied. “I intensified the workouts before the games, I knew I was coming back. The guys who helped me with the workouts did a great job building them up to game legs. So, I feel great. Cardio-wise I don’t feel like I missed a beat.”

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting, five assists, four rebounds and four steals in 33 minutes.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault spoke to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander about his minutes restriction ahead of his return in Friday’s matchup against the Nuggets. Capping Hall of Fame center Wilt Chamberlain’s streak of scoring 20+ points in 126 consecutive games, Gilgeous-Alexander equaled Chamberlain’s 59-game record of 20+ point games.

Daigneault discussed Gilgeous-Alexander’s streak as evidence of his continued vision for the Thunder.

Daigneault said, “There’s really no difference in his game, home or street. I think some people reach a certain level.” “It’s his ability to perform consistently in all environments. We’ve had a lot of guys like that in his role, but he’s definitely one of them.”

Gilgeous-Alexander extended his streak of scoring 20+ points to 123 consecutive games.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander keeps it 100 about Lu Dort’s expulsion

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander addressed Lou Dort’s ejection in Friday’s 127-121 overtime win against the Denver Nuggets. Gilgeous-Alexander could see the Thunder in overtime after leading Oklahoma City with 36 points and nine assists. Head coach Mark Daigneault shut SGA out for the night after logging 34 minutes in his first game back from an abdominal injury.

Gilgeous-Alexander responded to Dort after discussing the plan the Thunder had made for their first game back from injury. ejection in the fourth trimester.

“They’re obviously a high-level team. We’re a high-level team. We’ve seen each other a lot over the last few years. Might be a little more into the game because we know the opponent. But yeah, it was fun. It was good out there. That’s how basketball is at the end of the season — it’s so physical. So, it’s nice to get one of those in the regular season.

“As far as scrimmages go, that’s usually how it happens. Something happens, one team roars, the other team roars. Lu was ejected. Lu is not that kind of guy – Lu is trying to go out there and win. I didn’t see what happened.”

As Nuggets All-Star Nikola Jokic began to return to the floor, Lu Dort checked the kneeling All-Star center, resulting in him falling and landing on Lu’s face. Just then, Thunder center Jaylin Williams intervened and a scuffle broke out between Williams and Jokic. Upon review, Dort was hit by Flagrant-2.

Both centers earned double technical fouls.

Head coach Mark Daigneault discusses Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander after Friday’s hard-fought overtime win. Although Gilgeous-Alexander did not play in overtime for the Thunder, Daigneault had a perfectly good explanation as to why.

“He’s coming off a 24-day injury. He’s coming back to play. One of the conditions to get him on the court tonight is to hold him to a certain point in terms of minutes,” Daigneault said. “We actually discussed that situation with both him and [Hartenstein] Before the game. Just so we can all be clear, in a non-emotional moment, that if we were in that situation, this is what we would do.

Daigneault concluded, “We obviously did that. I understand it’s a little unconventional, but, at the end of the day, we’re trying to prioritize the health of our players as they come back from injury.”

The Thunder will face the Mavericks on Sunday.

Stephen A. amid injury to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Smith leaves honest assessment of OKC

After starting the season in historic fashion, the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder have been hit with injuries. After starting the year without All-Star forward Jalen Williams, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has missed the last few games.

Although the team has been able to “maintain service” in the Western Conference playoff race – maintaining its top spot in the conference – Stephen A. Smith believes the team is in trouble if SGA doesn’t bounce back soon. On the latest edition of ESPN’s First Take, the panel discussed the resurgence of the San Antonio Spurs under Victor Wembanyama after a 114-103 win over the Pistons. While praising the Spurs, Smith expressed doubt about the Thunder without Alexander.

“Without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, I wouldn’t have Oklahoma City [Thunder] As a top 8 team,” Smith said boldly.

Currently, the Thunder have a 6-3 record without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander this season, which includes wins over playoff contenders in the Lakers, Phoenix Suns, and Cleveland Cavaliers. But before the All-Star break, they suffered two consecutive losses to the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Alexander has another season worthy of an MVP finish. He is averaging 31.8 points per game and 6.4 assists per game, shooting 55% from the field and 39% from three. He has emerged as a steady hand for the Thunder offense when it needs the basket. With Alexander out of the rotation, the Thunder have had to rely on their trademark effective defense, team basketball and three-point shooting to maintain their edge over their recent opponents.

The Thunder are in for an interesting run of games as they face the playoff contenders Toronto Raptors on the first night of a back-to-back, before they play a nationally televised game against the Detroit Pistons, the top seed in the Eastern Conference, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Chris Paul chooses between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic at PG

The role of point guard in the NBA has changed markedly in the modern game, with the true point guard becoming almost a rarity. Combo guards like Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic are prototypes for point guards in today’s NBA. Chris Paul, who recently announced his retirement, revealed his preference for who he would like to run.

During a recent episode of Carmelo Anthony’s podcast, ‘7 PM in Brooklyn,’ Chris Paul said he would take Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over Luka Doncic, who he would like to play point guard in the NBA.

“We’ll be on the road, watching the game, but that [Shai] I would like to go to the gym. Loves going to the gym, will do all the work and takes care of his body. And I think the year we played together, they also started to see that defense matters,” Paul said. “You don’t have to be a lockdown defender or anything, but when you’re playing defense for your team, your teammates just want to see that starter really try to play defense.”

“When I was in Houston, Steph [Curry] He wasn’t the greatest defender back then,” Paul continued. “But now, Steph, he’s up the D. He plays really good defense. I have a lot of respect for Steph, Shai and all these guys who at least put in the effort on the defensive end because that’s part of it and that’s what your teammates want to see.

Defense is clearly the deciding factor for Paul in terms of who is the better option at point guard between Gilgeous-Alexander and Doncic.

How Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s injury affects the race

Victor Wembanyama became the first casualty due to injury, hurting his chances of winning the NBA MVP award. Nikola Jokic then missed 16 games, putting him on the verge of exceeding the 65-game minimum. Now Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is struggling with injury, which could end his hopes of winning MVP for the second consecutive time.

The Oklahoma City Thunder star has missed seven consecutive games after suffering an abdominal injury suffered on Feb. 3 against the Orlando Magic. When the Thunder announced this injury, it was said that their MVP award would be reevaluated after the All-Star break.

Initially, there was hope that Gilgeous-Alexander would be cleared to return for the team’s first few games after the All-Star break, but nothing has been said. With five of their next six games remaining, will SGA return from his injury during the Thunder’s upcoming road trip?

Since suffering this injury, the Thunder have gone 4-3, and got a much-needed key win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night. The game was Gilgeous-Alexander’s seventh consecutive missed game and his ninth overall absence this season.

This means Gilgeous-Alexander can only miss a maximum of eight more games to remain eligible for end-of-season honors and awards. Although he is still in good shape, the situation could change quickly if the reigning MVP is unable to return to the court this upcoming week.

This year’s race for the NBA MVP award hinges heavily on who can stay healthy, as almost all players in the top five of these rankings are close to the maximum of 17 allowed absences to remain eligible.

2025-26 season stats: 42 games, 28.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, 10.5 assists, 1.4 steals, 58.4 FG%, 42.1 3P%

In his three appearances since the All-Star break, Jokic has averaged 29.7 points, 15.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game, while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from 3-point range. These are MVP-like numbers for the three-time MVP, despite the Denver Nuggets losing two of those games.

The argument for the MVP award right now seems to center on availability, as Jokic has played 42 games compared to Gilgeous-Alexander’s 49 games. Has Jokic performed enough in his short appearances to justify winning the MVP award over Gilgeous-Alexander, whose team is still the best in the NBA?

This is definitely a big debate that many don’t have an answer to at this point, and that’s the main reason why Gilgeous-Alexander’s injury return is so important to the MVP race.

2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – Oklahoma City Thunder

2025-26 season stats: 49 games, 31.8 points, 6.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 55.4 FG%, 39.0 3P%

There is still no update on when Gilgeous-Alexander can return to the court. Until then, the MVP race is in a holding pattern of sorts, as four or five more missed games would put him on par with Jokic in terms of missed time.

Nonetheless, Gilgeous-Alexander still ranks second in the league in scoring, and the Thunder (44–14) have the best record in the NBA. He may be No. 2 in the NBA MVP rankings right now, but it’s really a 1A and 1B situation between him and Jokic.

With seven weeks left in the regular season, no player is a wrong answer for MVP.

2025-26 season stats: 49 games, 25.5 points, 9.8 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 46.3 FG%, 33.8 3P%

What Cade Cunningham has accomplished for the Detroit Pistons this season is remarkable. Not only do the Pistons have the best winning percentage in the league at the moment, but Cunningham leads the league in total assists, and the only player with more assists per game is Jokic.

In his first game after the All-Star break, Cunningham had a stellar performance against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The Pistons’ All-Star recorded 42 points for his third 40-point performance of the season, and he also added 13 assists and eight rebounds to his name.

Since the All-Star break, Cunningham has had back-to-back double-doubles with 13 assists. He is firmly holding the No. 3 spot in these MVP rankings.

4. Victor Wembanyama – San Antonio Spurs*

Previous ranking: #5

2025-26 season stats: 42 games, 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.7 blocks, 51.1 FG%, 35.7 3P%

Wembanyama has overtaken Luka Doncic to take the No. 4 spot in the NBA MVP rankings for a few reasons. In addition to the San Antonio Spurs catching the Thunder for the best record in the NBA, Wembley has been on a hot streak recently.

Since his impressive 40-point, 12-rebound double-double against the Los Angeles Lakers before the All-Star break, Wembanyama has averaged 23.7 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor in his last three games.

Spurs are undefeated in this region, and Wembanyama has led his team to eight consecutive wins. This is the longest active winning streak in the NBA.

5. Luka Doncic – Los Angeles Lakers*

2025-26 season stats: 44 games, 32.8 points, 8.5 assists, 7.7 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 47.1 FG%, 35.5 3P%

There’s no denying that this has been the second-best season of Luka Doncic’s career after finishing third in MVP voting during the 2023-24 season. Doncic is not only leading the league in scoring, but he is also leading the league in 3-pointers made and attempted per game, as well as free throws made and attempted per game.

Offensively, Doncic is off right now, and the only word to describe his game right now is dominant.

However, Doncic’s ceiling has largely been set in the NBA MVP race this season. He can’t overtake Jokic or Gilgeous-Alexander as long as their teams lead the West standings, and Cunningham has himself locked into the No. 3 spot for now.

Between Wembanyama and Doncic, the Spurs star has the upper hand in both head-to-head and overall impact on his team’s championship aspirations this season. Doncic has missed 12 games this year, meaning he will need to stay healthy this year to qualify for awards and honors.

Unsung hero steals Cavs’ soul without Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Jalen Williams

OKLAHOMA CITY – Without All-Stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, the Oklahoma City Thunder snapped the Cleveland Cavs’ seven-game winning streak. The Thunder guards really understood their defensive duties against All-Star Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and a completely healthy Cavs team. Oklahoma City led 28–5 in the first quarter, a 23-point deficit that Cleveland erased in the second half.

However, the Thunder’s two-point deficit was short-lived as its strong defense continued to make stops, including Isaiah Joe’s career-high five steals and game-high 22 points in Sunday’s 121–113 win. who addressed him exceptional performance After the Thunder’s win on Sunday.

“At the end of the day, I stay true to my game and let it come to me,” Joe said. “Being lower body, it allows for more action. Being able to be more aggressive. A teammate asks a little more of you, and whoever is out there just answers the call. So, I think we all take a little more pride.”

Joe’s 22 points, including six threes, gave the Thunder seven players in double figures. Cason Wallace (20 points, 10 assists), who finished with three steals, Chet Holmgren (17 points, 15 rebounds), who recorded a double-double, and Isaiah Hartenstein, who added 13 points and seven rebounds.

While Isaiah Joe continued his hot shooting streak, scoring at least two threes in 11 of his last dozen games, he also did his part defending the Cavs’ leading scoring tandem in Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. Against a healthy Cavs team, the Thunder won without All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and their leading scorer and All-Defensive forward Jalen Williams.

Without Ajay Mitchell and Alex Caruso, two Thunder guards who make their presence felt on both ends of the floor, Joe Contribution went a long way. Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault put Joe’s defense against the Cavs in perspective during his postgame media availability.

“With Harden and Mitchell, they’re heavy on looking for matchups, and they’re an experienced team that’s been well-coached. If you put a matchup out there that they like, they’ll have ways to try to get to it,” Daigneault said. “So, you have to be very, very cautious and disciplined in how you handle it. I thought their coverage tonight — they tried to go to him, they tried to go to anybody to get Dort and Cason away from those guys.

“The coverages were very tight. The coverages behind him were really good. That’s a part of him, but that’s who he is. He’s light. He’s not the biggest, strongest guy, but he performs at a high level. He’s fearless. He’s physical. And he plays hard. He plays hard all his minutes. So, you can knock him out in a game like this.”

The Thunder have won four of their last five games without Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams and Mitchell.

Caruso joins Shai, Williams on injury report vs. Cavs

The Oklahoma City Thunder host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon. And if the official injury report is anything to go by, the defending champions will go into this match with a significantly reduced staff.

Alex Caruso joins franchise cornerstone Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and forward Jalen Williams as all three are not expected to play, according to the official injury report. Caruso has been officially ruled out due to a sprained left ankle suffered during Oklahoma City’s 105-86 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday.

MVP contender Gilgeous-Alexander has been sidelined with an abdominal strain while Williams is out with a strained right hamstring. However, this is not the end of the injury problems for the Thunder, with Ajay Mitchell and Thomas Sorber also unavailable for this game.

The Thunder enter this game as the clear favorites with a record of 43–14. However, they face a team that is most expected to emerge as title contenders, especially after the acquisition of James Harden, who has performed strongly on the floor. Apart from the absences, that means OKC could have a lot going on against the Cavs.

Alex Caruso missed Oklahoma City’s 105-86 win over Brooklyn with an injury, and the Thunder will take a cautious approach given his importance. Caruso continues to be one of Oklahoma City’s most destructive perimeter defenders and has the potential to perform well in the postseason.

This injury becomes even more damaging, as Oklahoma City is already without two of its primary offensive creators. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams represent a major part of their offensive threat, which puts more pressure on players like Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took the road less traveled when joining Converse Basketball in 2020. In addition to becoming the new face of Converse Basketball (a subgroup of Nike), Sga also earned the title of Creative Director for their basketball line. It has also opened the door to past and future lifestyle ventures including everyday sneakers and apparel.

Typically, we have only seen the SHAI 001 in monochromatic colors, with every facet and panel matching a uniform color. Here, we see a pattern on the shoe for the first time, which is an exciting indicator of what the future may hold for future concepts.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander takes MVP lead over Nikola Jokic in latest ESPN poll

There are a lot of worthy candidates and compelling storylines in the 2025-26 NBA MVP race, so much so that some fans think the award is theirs. The latest ESPN straw poll suggests otherwise. Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is in position to retain his crown.

A panel consisting of 100 local, national and international media members believe the 27-year-old guard is the man responsible for the beating. Gilgeous-Alexander received 78 first-place votes, surpassing Nikola Jokic (18), Cade Cunningham (1), Victor Vembanyama (3) and the rest of the field. With a lead of 230 points, the consensus is that a player will earn MVP honors in back-to-back seasons for the seventh time since 2006.

A lot has changed since ESPN’s initial survey in December. Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic were locked in a tight battle, with only 15 first-place votes and 43 total points separating the former from the latter. Luka Doncic also secured third place. Due to another injury, the NBA’s scoring leader (points per game) lost much of the lead and fell to fifth in the second poll. The Los Angeles Lakers’ position in the Western Conference standings (fifth) may be a factor.

The Thunder have held first place in the West throughout the season (although the San Antonio Spurs are close). Gilgeous-Alexander is the best player predicted by many to become the league’s first repeat champion in eight years. Stability is also working in their favor.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander can easily overtake his competitors

Although the 2025 NBA Finals MVP is currently dealing with an abdominal strain, he has only missed seven games to this point in the campaign. Jokic is dangerously close to falling below the mandatory 65-game requirement (with only one more contest to go), and Wembanyama and Doncic don’t have much room for themselves. Cunningham, who has played in 48 of 54 possible games, could emerge as Gilgeous-Alexander’s biggest competition.

It’s important to note that these votes were tallied before the Detroit Pistons cornerstone rolled into Madison Square Garden and torched the New York Knicks for 42 points, 13 assists, eight rebounds and two blocks. While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to recover from his injury, Cade Cunningham has the perfect opportunity to delight voters with his superbly versatile skill set. He is also leading the team that currently has the best record in the NBA.

The Thunder and Pistons face off next Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena, but based on the latest updates, OKC could be without their top man for that potential MVP showcase. Cunningham can still dominate and find grace, which he will need a lot of if there is to be any suspense around this awards race.

Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.8 points, 6.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, while shooting 55.4 percent from the field (career high) and 39.0 percent from 3-point range. The three-time All-NBA First-Team selection is truly in the midst of a stellar performance, and his trophy collection reflects as much. Assuming he can return to action soon, Gilgeous-Alexander may need to make room for more hardware.

Stephen Cassel gets 100% real in defending Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephen Cassel has the tough job of guarding the Los Angeles Lakers’ two top leading scorers, All-Star Luka Doncic and Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Whenever the Spurs face the Lakers or Thunder, it is his responsibility to be in front of the NBA’s leading scorers. Castle is one of the most promising guards in the league due to his impressive two-way play.

He fills out the stat sheet as a scorer on one end of the floor and a skilled playmaker who can defend at high level On the other. According to ESPN’s NBA Today, Cassel talked about defending Doncic and Gilgeous-Alexander in their respective Spurs matchups against the Lakers and Thunder.

Cassel said, “I’m very proud of it. I ask for those matchups. I wouldn’t want it any other way. I think I can be one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.” “Day by day, that’s just what I’m trying to prove.”

Cassel played a key role in the Spurs’ three consecutive wins over the Thunder over 12 days in December, including their Christmas Day showdown, which turned into a blowout victory. Gilgeous-Alexander was held to 22 points on 7-of-19 shooting, including 1-of-6 from deep. In only his second season, Castle is having a breakout campaign for the Spurs.

In a 138–125 win against the Dallas Mavericks, he made NBA history by becoming the youngest NBA player to record a 40/12/12 triple-double. He finished with 40 points, 12 assists, 12 rebounds, three steals and one block.

While Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry has recovered from a knee injury suffered in the NBA’s big weekend, Spurs veteran forward Harrison Barnes says Stephen Cassel was deserving of All-Star consideration to replace SGA. Barnes also supported the other half of the Spurs’ backcourt in De’Aaron Fox as another option.

Barnes says Spurs have second-best record in Western Conference either guard must be replaced Curry.

“It would be criminal if he did that [Castle] And Fox did not notice him. We’re ranked No. 2 in the West,” Barnes said. “I think what we’ve done is, for the teams below us that had two All-Stars, I don’t know of any case that if we’re talking about the impact on winning and playing high-level basketball, why one of them shouldn’t be selected and/or be highly considered for those spots.”

Although the NBA has announced Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram as Curry’s replacement, De’Aaron Fox will replace the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo at All-Star Sunday.
