Defender Per Schuurs has revealed the worst period of his career and how it ruined his move to Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur.

In an emotional interview with De Telegraph, The 26-year-old describes a two-year battle with pain, uncertainty and mental collapse, and how he is now finally seeing his way back.

Per Schuurs is currently a free agent after leaving Torino in February. That departure followed two years of injury. He previously spent 286 days out due to a cruciate ligament injury in October 2024 and is currently on 618 days out after knee surgery.

Before the latest problem, he was one of Serie A’s most sought-after defenders. After impressing at Torino, he left a number of Premier League clubs giving him tough competition. This included Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

“I reached a five-year contract with Inter in the summer, but the club could not reach an agreement with Torino,” he said.

“Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur also wanted to trade and pay more. They offered €35m, Inter offered 30m. While Torino demanded at least €40m. A standoff occurred. This also played a part in the background. I was sick of not making a transfer. In fact, still am,”

Two months later, Per Schuurs suffered an injury that changed everything. The knee injury, despite injury, has created a medical mystery that has baffled experts across Europe.

“Everything seemed to be going well, but after a week I had a reaction on the outside of my knee,” he said.

“I was dying of pain. Instead of four weeks, I walked on crutches for four months. That’s when all the alarm bells rang. I saw the best orthopedic specialists in England, France, Italy and the Netherlands. But the reason for the complaints was not found.”

This made the guard sad. Not only had he missed out on big steps forward at Crystal Palace and Tottenham, but his career was now on the decline.

He admitted, “I had fallen from the pinnacle of my career and the most beautiful phase of my personal life into the deepest abyss of which I did not even know.”

“This manifested as crying and extreme anger. One evening, when I really couldn’t take it anymore, I said to my girlfriend: Sleep well and I hope I don’t wake up again. I never thought about ending my life.”

Now the defender is back on the road to recovery. He can see the light at the end of the tunnel and is hoping to create a redemption arc for the movies.

He concluded, “I would prefer to lie in bed with the curtains closed.”

“I was amazed at the person I had become; I had not been the same for two years. I have been pain free for weeks now and am feeling better and better. I want to come back the most beautiful I have ever been.

“I’m concentrating on being in top shape until the end of June. Then I’ll start looking for a club. When I think about it, I have tears in my eyes. On the other hand, it’s painful that it’s a dream.”

On Wednesday evening, the Los Angeles Lakers got back into the win column with an easy win over the Indiana Pacers. Luka Doncic once again led the way for Los Angeles, scoring 43 points on an efficient shooting night from the field to end a historic road trip.

Apparently, in addition to his skills on the basketball court, photography is also one of the many talents that Clark possesses. Clark is hoping to have a much healthier 2026 WNBA season than she did suffering from fever in 2025.

Meanwhile, with this win, the Lakers were able to overcome their recent tough road defeat at the hands of the Detroit Pistons and end their road trip on a high note. It was a very successful offensive outing in the East for the Lakers, who had recently ridden a nine-game winning streak, with James enjoying one of the most efficient scoring stretches of his career during the hot streak.

However, the head of the snake for Los Angeles remains Doncic, who has put up Herculean stat lines every night for the Lakers this entire season, and has worked his way into MVP conversations as a result.

The Lakers will now return home for an easier stretch of the schedule, starting with a Friday night tilt against the tanking Brooklyn Nets. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 10:30 pm ET from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

On Sunday evening, the New York Knicks picked up a narrow home win over the Golden State Warriors at Madison Square Garden. “I’m sick. … I had the New York Knicks to go to the Finals. I sure don’t have that now,” Smith said, according to First Take on X, formerly Twitter.

In fact, many analysts projected the Knicks to be a Finals-level team this season. However, the emergence of the Detroit Pistons, who have swept New York in their contests so far this year, as well as the surprising play of the Boston Celtics, who are second in the East and recently brought Jayson Tatum back from his Achilles injury, have undermined those plans, and now, the Knicks are as low as fourth in the East in terms of chances to make the Finals.

New York struggled during their recent road trip, losing badly to both the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, and had to struggle mightily to defeat the weak Utah Jazz.

The Knicks will be looking to turn things around in the final month of the regular season to reach the playoffs while playing their best basketball and not the slump they are currently facing.

The Eastern Conference was supposed to be the land of opportunity this season, and while teams like the powerhouse Detroit Pistons and the rising Toronto Raptors have certainly taken advantage of it, the Miami Heat (31-29) appear to be stuck in no man’s land. Erik Spoelstra’s team is currently set to compete in the NBA Play-in Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Bam Adebayo has a lot going for him. He expressed his displeasure after Thursday’s 124-117 loss against the Philadelphia 76ers.

After recording a game-high 29 points and 14 rebounds, according to the HeatCulture “We’re better than we’ve been in the play-ins the last four years.”

While the Heat are respected for their toughness, professionalism, and togetherness, their renowned culture has resulted in only one playoff win in the past two years. Injuries certainly led to the disappointing finish, but it is becoming clear that Miami no longer has the firepower to compete in the East, perhaps not even in the weakened state it currently stands without Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton.

If the Heat are forced to go to the play-in round once again, their chances of making a deep run in the postseason will certainly diminish. Yes, the team has had success at this before, reaching the NBA Finals after starting as the No. 8 seed, but Jimmy Butler is no longer in South Beach (nor is he healthy). The organization needs to take a hard look at itself and initiate significant changes, as this is clearly not the Miami that was swimming in praise a few years ago.

Perhaps a return to the Kasia Center will turn the team’s fortunes around. After consecutive losses to the Milwaukee Bucks and 76ers, the Heat will play eight of their next 10 games at home, starting with Saturday night’s showdown with the Houston Rockets. They can only hope that the long-awaited change will come during this crucial period, as the playoffs are fast approaching.
