Chelsea transfer includes ‘surprise clause’ – Blues stripped of power

River Plate’s loan deal for Chelsea youngster Kendry Paez includes a ‘surprise clause’ in the Argentine side’s favour.

This is according to El Intransigente, Who today relayed information regarding the deal to journalist Renzo Pentich.

Páez joined the Argentine giants on loan from Chelsea at the end of the January transfer window. The club hopes the 18-year-old will stay until next summer.

He was at Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg after coming to Europe last summer. The Blues had previously signed him up as a youth player but had to wait to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Strasbourg struggles

However, he struggled in France, with only one assist in 21 games and 718 minutes of action. Chelsea then changed tactics and brought him back before sending him to River Plate. Sport Witness covered the action late in the window.

Now Pantich has come back with a little more information on the deal. He explained that the agreement with Chelsea included a ‘surprise clause’ in favor of River Plate.

According to his knowledge, while the loan does not include an option to buy, it does include a clause preventing Chelsea from being given ‘free rein’ to bring him back whenever they want.

“Kendri Paez’s buy-back option is only activated if he does not play 50% of the matches for River Plate,” he said.

Chelsea will have to wait

El Intransigente says this means Páez will remain at River until December if he plays the minimum required minutes. This is an ‘important’ factor for the club and their plans for the second half of the year.

Manager Marcelo Gallardo has already started using him. Far from stopping him, he is giving him time to play. His intention is clear; Gaining rhythm, adapting and becoming a valuable asset to the youth.

That knowledge further helps the plan, as Chelsea cannot drag him back to Stamford Bridge whenever they want.
