Doncic, 27, is known for running his mouth on the hardwood, so it wasn’t a surprise that he exchanged sweet nothings with fans.

The Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder are set for one of the biggest matchups of the season on Thursday evening. The Thunder, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, remain in the West standings as the regular season campaign concludes. Meanwhile, the Celtics are business as usual, with Jaylen Brown elevating his play to an MVP-caliber level. But the highly anticipated clash comes with a worrying injury report for the Celtics.

The Celtics released their injury report, with Jayson Tatum and Derrick White both questionable for the matchup. While White is dealing with a right knee injury, Tatum is managing his comeback from his right Achilles injury. While Tatum and White haven’t been completely ruled out, both of their losses could be a blow to the Celtics as they look to take on the reigning NBA champions.

White has been a constant in the Celtics lineup. Playing 63 games this season, he has averaged 17.5 points, 5.7 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. With both White and Tatum out of the lineup, getting a win in Thursday’s game against Oklahoma City could be a tough task.

LOS ANGELES – After a disappointing loss against the Denver Nuggets, the Los Angeles Lakers got back on track with a 1128-117 win against the Indiana Pacers on Friday. Luka Doncic led the Lakers with a game-high 44 points, but it wasn’t their offense that he wanted to talk about following the game.

Throughout the season, the media and fans alike have talked about Luka Doncic’s offensive game, but there has been very little mention of his defensive impact for the Lakers. So much so that it has actually become an underestimated part of his skill-set.

“I know people will never talk about it. Just trying to do my job,” Doncic said during his postgame press conference. “Trying to be more offensive, trying to be more engaged. Just trying to be better defensively.”

Doncic’s defense was certainly on display during the Lakers’ win against the Pacers. He finished with two blocked shots and three steals, including an impressive block where he hit Pacers guard Aaron Nesmith who thought he could get an easy look at the basket. The block immediately caused the Lakers’ fast break.

Doncic carries a huge offensive load for the Lakers, and he is very explosive when it comes to scoring the basketball. Perhaps that’s why it’s easy to overlook his defensive impact. But the numbers don’t lie. When it comes to regular rotation players, Doncic is second only to Jared Vanderbilt in defensive rating at 114.4, according to StatMuse.

Vanderbilt is easily one of the Lakers’ top defenders; You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who disagrees. But Doncic also deserves some credit for his role on the defensive end. And for head coach JJ Redick, it’s not just getting stops or steals or blocks that measures Doncic’s impact.

“I think he’s had really good stretches, and then sustainable stretches leading up to the game,” Redick said during his pregame press conference. “And then it seems like occasionally there’s a play where the engagement and effort isn’t there. There are times within the game where maybe one or two possessions happen. But I would say across the board, on our team, outside of maybe Marcus Smart, that’s the situation for our guys on that end of the field.”

“We have the numbers. When he switches on the ball, it’s the fewest of any player on our perimeter in terms of points per possession. So I think he’s done a good job. He’s shown he can control the basketball,” Redick continued. “He’s obviously one of the best wing defensive rebounders in the NBA. He’s able to generate steals and deflections. With some provocation, also taking charges. So he’s doing a lot of good things defensively.”

On the season, Doncic has appeared in 51 games, a little over 35 minutes per game. He is averaging a league-leading 32.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.5 steals while splitting 47.5 percent shooting from the field, 36.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 77.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

According to some inside sources, the Montreal Canadiens have inquired about the acquisition cost of New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck.

Given that the Habs have shown interest in trading for Robert Thomas, a deal that would obviously improve the roster while ignoring some more pressing needs, it makes sense that they have done their due diligence regarding other available centers, including Trocheck and Nazem Kadri.

Darren Dreger: If Robert Thomas doesn’t move on most people think Vinny Trocheck is going to be the second rung on that ladder, and then you get to Nazem Kadri – Barn Burner (3/4).

The 32-year-old Trocheck doesn’t fit the Canadiens’ ideal age bracket, but it should be noted that he has managed to maintain a very respectable level of play for a skater who is on the wrong side of 30.

He is in the fourth year of a seven-year contract with an annual average value of $5.625 million, and he will be 35 when it expires in 2029.

For your buck, this is a good value deal, especially when we consider Trocheck is on pace to score 18 goals and 40 assists in 68 games. To make matters even more interesting, he has produced fantastic underlying numbers on a depleted Rangers roster, a testament to his ability to stave off the usual statistical decline that tends to take over at his age.

Trocheck is also excellent at the faceoff dot, winning over 58% of his draws this season, an asset that will certainly interest a head coach like Martin St-Louis.

In that vein, Trocheck would project as a significant upgrade over current second-line center Oliver Kapanen.

Montreal Canadiens Brass Tacks

Like a potential Thomas trade, this deal would ignore the most significant issues in the organization, which are a lack of goaltending excellence and questionable defensive coverage.

And then there is the matter of acquisition costs, which are expected to be exorbitant.

However, Vincent Trocheck checks almost every box for the Habs, except his age. There is also the issue of his lack of discipline, which will be further exacerbated by playing for a team that has already struggled with indiscipline for a few seasons now.

If the Canadiens were just one center away from being legitimate Stanley Cup contenders, this is the type of trade that would be considered a slam dunk, even if he is much older than most of the players Hughes acquired.

Montreal Canadiens goaltending trade targets

Before we look at the numbers, it should be noted that Binnington and Bobrowski have won Stanley Cups in the past, and there is something to be said for providing valuable experience to the youngest team in the league.

However, the goaltender in question is no longer in Stanley Cup shape, as evidenced by his numbers, which are downright terrible.

To get a better idea, we’ll take a look at four different metrics at 5v5: save percentage (SV%), goals saved above average per 60 (GSAA/60), high-danger save percentage (HDSV%), and high-danger goals saved above average per 60 (HDGSAA/60).

We filtered results for players with at least 1000 minutes played at 5v5 this season, giving us a total of 49 goaltenders.

As you can see in the table above, Montbault is near the bottom of the league in all four metrics.

And yet, he’s still managed to produce better numbers than both Binnington and Bobrowski. They are ranked last or close to last in most categories, a good reminder that the grass is not always greener.

You could argue that this isn’t a fair comparison, as the Montreal Canadiens are a better team than the Florida Panthers and St. Louis Blues, but that would be to ignore the fact that the Canadiens are below both teams in high-danger shot share (46.3%).

In other words, the Canadiens squandered high-danger chances, making life much harder on their netminders. There are a dozen or more awkward rushes every night, not to mention a few instances of confused defensive coverages.

Simply put, the idea of ​​acquiring Jordan Binnington or Sergei Bobrovsky makes little to no sense for the Montreal Canadiens, as they would be unlikely to surpass Montembeault, not to mention Jacob Dobbs.

And then there’s the matter of freeing up cap space for netminders with worse numbers than the second-best Habs goalie.

All things considered, making this type of deal would be a mistake in the face of the smart, thorough work Kent Hughes and Co. have done since taking the reins in Montreal.

That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise when Team USA manager Mark DeRosa decided to give Judge the same role for the 2026 WBC. The outfielder’s winning track record is undeniable, and outside of Shohei Ohtani, many view him as MLB’s best player.

With the tournament starting this week, the U.S. roster is in Houston looking to get on the same page before their game against Brazil on Friday. Unexpectedly, the captain spoke to the team and informed them about the mission ahead and motivated them to bring home the WBC title in a few weeks. Well, it looks like his pep talk wasn’t received well by baseball fans on the X.

With the NHL trade deadline a week away, we’ll be taking a look at many of the rumors regarding the Canadiens soon, but for now, we can discuss one of the most recent talking points. Elliotte Friedman linked the Habs to Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, however, it is important to note that he did not suggest this was a solid report. Friedman made it clear that a player like Ristolainen could be of interest to the Habs, but that’s about it.

“Canadians, I think they’ve seen some of these D’s,” Friedman said on his latest edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast. “People like Ristolainen, or, people like him.”

He is a big, right-handed defenseman, the type of player that will interest most NHL teams, however, he also has a $5.1 million cap hit that runs through 2026-27. Given his recent decline in underlying numbers, not to mention the fact that he’s on the wrong side of 30, I have a hard time believing the Habs are interested in paying a high price for a player like him.

Craig Button suggested the Canadiens should trade for Sergei Bobrovsky, a goaltender who comes with a $10 million cap hit, and currently has the same save percentage as Samuel Montembeault (.874). With all due respect to Craig, this is a questionable suggestion that will not improve the team while forcing them to move assets to absorb his expensive contract. At best, this is a lateral move.

The Laval Rocket are finding ways to win despite missing half their roster. OK, that’s an exaggeration, but when they faced the Rochester Americans they were without Adam Engstrom, Jacob Fowler, Florian Czekaj and Laurent Dauphin, among others. Toby Bisson (3), Joshua Roy (14), Vincent Arseneau (5), Samuel Blais (5,6), Alex Belzile (25), Philippe Messer (7), Owen Beck (7), and Will Dineen found the back of the net for the Rockets as Laval emerged victorious 9–3.

Shocking or not, Michael Hayes improved his season numbers on Friday night. The dynamic prospect now has 13 goals and 33 assists in just 34 games. For context, Hayes scored 13 goals and 21 assists in 33 games during his rookie season with the University of Michigan.

Khamzat Chimaev has long targeted a showdown with Alex Pereira, but the undefeated middleweight champion’s grappling coach believes the Brazilian striker should take a completely different route.

A key figure in Chimaev’s corner, Alan “Finfou” do Nascimento, recently spoke with MMA Fighting and offered surprisingly candid advice for the current light heavyweight king. Rather than risk his aura in a stylistic nightmare against “Borz”, Nascimento suggests that Pereira should pursue a third divisional title in the heavyweight ranks.

Nascimento acknowledges that a bout between the two superstars would generate significant revenue, but he feels the historical implications of the heavyweight move are far more important. The grappling expert pointed out that Pereira is already the financial A-side in almost any matchup.

Therefore, accepting the fight against Chimaev, even if a second title is at stake for the Chechen-born fighter, does not offer the same historical reward as capturing a third championship belt. Nascimento said achieving champion-champ-champ status is something the organization has never seen, making it the ultimate foundation for a combat sports career.

Despite advising against the matchup from his perspective, Nascimento is confident in his protégé’s ability to reach the 205-pound limit. He said that moving up to light heavyweight requires a fair amount of time to safely gain weight and cannot be done overnight. However, if UFC officials provide the opportunity and Chimaev is interested, the team will comply and move forward with the necessary preparations.

The coach praised both athletes for their mentality in rising from difficult beginnings to the top of the sport. When breaking down the hypothetical clash of styles, Nascimento predicted a classic striker-versus-grappler dynamic, where the athlete who successfully dictates the fight location would be victorious.

He noted that if Chimaev failed to secure a takedown, he would be in serious danger of being knocked unconscious by Pereira’s signature left hook. Conversely, if Chimaev manages to pin the kickboxer to the ground, the chances of a submission victory will increase.

While acknowledging the unpredictability of combat sports – such as the hypothetical scenario of Pereira knocking out Chimaev – Nascimento firmly believes that the outcome depends entirely on which man can apply his tactics first.

Jose Alvarado has quietly had a masterful start to life at the New York Knicks, but his comeback against the Houston Rockets thrust him firmly into the spotlight. In just 20 fourth-quarter minutes, the former New Orleans Pelicans man produced eight points, five steals, four assists and a game-best +18 plus-minus, along with a steal on Kevin Durant that resulted in Madison Square Garden booing loudly.

In his five appearances so far, Alvarado has averaged approximately 13.3 points, 4.3 assists and 3.7 steals, while shooting over 55% overall and 37.5% from deep. Alvarado’s obvious impact was also praised by Karl-Anthony Towns, who himself had a big night against Houston.
