The Tigers have plenty of time to turn their season around, but it’s notable that they are being labeled as potential sellers. In fact, it focuses on starting pitcher Tarik Skubal, who is expected to miss one to two months after undergoing elbow surgery to remove a loose body.

Skuable is set to enter MLB free agency after the 2026 season. If Detroit does indeed become a seller and fall out of contention, it would make sense to trade the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner to maximize his value. If not, the Tigers will waste Skubal’s last season in Detroit and lose him for a draft pick.

There are other players like Jack Flaherty and Gleyber Torres who will also become free agents. It’s the start of the 2026 MLB season, but the Tigers need to change the direction of their campaign. The goal should be to transform yourself into a buyer, not a seller.

The Detroit Tigers have made a surprise shutout of a rising star in MLB. The Tigers and infielder Kevin McGonigal have finalized an eight-year, $150 million contract extension, the team announced. McGonigle, who made his MLB debut in March, could make up to $160 million with a contract escalator for the final three seasons.

The 21-year-old infielder’s contract covers the 2027 to 2034 MLB seasons. This covers McGonigal’s five seasons of club control and his first three years of free agency. The new contract essentially guarantees McGonigle an additional season of service. This will take him until his 30th birthday.

To start the 2026 MLB season, McGonagle is batting .311 with one home run and eight runs batted in in 17 games. The 21-year-old also has a .908 on-base percentage with eight strikeouts and 11 walks. McGonigle was known for his elite plate discipline in the minor leagues, and this has translated to MLB.

This is a shocking development for Detroit. Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris shut down McGonigal before he began producing consistently at the elite level. Entering the 2026 MLB season, McGonagall was ranked as the No. 2 prospect in baseball, behind Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Connor Griffin.

McGonigal will make $1 million in 2027, $7 million in 2028, $16 million in 2029, $21 million in 2030, $22 million in 2031, and $23 million from 2032 to 2034. Escalators could increase his 2032 salary by $25 million, his 2033 salary by $26 million and his 2034 salary by $26 million. $28 million.

The Detroit Tigers placed starting pitcher Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list (IL) due to left hip inflammation on Saturday, April 6. The news comes after Verlander had a poor start to the 2026 MLB season with Detroit, allowing five runs in 3.2 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. So, what’s the latest on the status of the three-time Cy Young Award winner?

Verlander is scheduled to throw a bullpen session for the Tigers on Saturday, the organization reports. In Verlander’s place, Kidder Montero will take the field on Friday night against the Miami Marlins. This means the Detroit pitcher likely won’t start a game until Thursday, April 16 against the Kansas City Royals.

It has been well documented that Verlander’s hip injury isn’t bad and if it weren’t for April he probably would have recovered from it. Verlander was placed on the IL a day before returning to Comerica Park, which would have been against the St. Louis Cardinals during an Easter Night game at the Peacocks.

This is a great step in the right direction for the 43-year-old pitcher. It’s unclear what will happen with Verlander after the bullpen session. As long as he can return soon, he won’t need rehab at Triple-A Toledo. However, there is no reason to recall Verlander right now.

While the Tigers have struggled to start the 2026 MLB season, they need Verlander. Montero played well in his debut against St. Louis and has a lot of experience in MLB over the past few seasons. As long as it doesn’t lose against Miami, Detroit should be in good shape.

Verlander will pitch at Comerica Park soon, but not until the Tigers feel confident he is ready.

The Detroit Tigers are back at Comerica Park and it was an amazing day of baseball. The Tigers won their home opener in 2026 by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 4–0. It was an excellent pitching performance from starting pitcher Framber Valdez.

Detroit opened the scoring with a 433-foot two-run home run by starting catcher Dillon Dingler in the fourth inning. Through seven games, Dingler is the only Detroit hitter with a home run, marking his second of the 2026 MLB season. Then, Riley Green hit an RBI-single in the fifth inning, followed by another single by Javier Báez in the sixth inning.

After being defeated by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, the Tigers’ offense bounced back in their home opener at Comerica Park. There were other opportunities for runs, as Kevin McGonigle and Kerry Carpenter hit two balls deep into the outfield during the first inning.

Meanwhile, Valdez went scoreless six with three hits, two walks and five strikeouts. The 32-year-old starter became the first pitcher since Spencer Turnbull in 2019 to throw a quality start in a home opener. Valdez is the first pitcher since Jordan Zimmerman in 2016 to do so in both the home opener and his home debut for the Tigers.

There were other milestones, such as Green’s 500th career MLB hit, becoming the 20th player in franchise history to accomplish the feat before age 26. It was a much-needed change of pace for the Tigers after being defeated by the Diamondbacks.

In fact, the Tigers had the biggest crown for a home opener at Comerica Park since 2017. Fans were given a picture-perfect day en route to their first home win of 2026.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry wrote an op-ed in 2025 arguing for change to fix a “broken” college athletics system, in which many universities had “unduly spent” on coaches and their respective staffs. A few months later, the LSU Tigers have now spent nearly a quarter of a billion on coaching changes.

According to Pete Nacos of On3.com, LSU has committed more than $200 million to hire football coach Lane Kiffin, men’s basketball coach Will Wade and their respective coaching staffs.

As of October 2025, the Tigers’ athletic department has fired head football coach Brian Kelly and recently parted ways with Matt McMahon. The school immediately began searching for his replacement, poaching Kiffin from the Ole Miss Rebels and bringing Wade back to Louisiana.

Settlement offers with Kelly went nowhere, resulting in the former Tigers head coach now set to receive a total of $54 million from the program. Firing McMahon, who had three years left on his contract, would have cost the school an additional $8 million.

Under new athletic director Verge Osberry, the public university is spending at a rate we’ve never seen from any school. Kiffin received a seven-year, $91 million contract, plus LSU paid the College Football Playoff bonuses he earned while the Rebels advanced without him. The Tigers have one of the largest and most expensive coaching staffs in college football, with a budget of zero and $40 million spent in the transfer portal.

LSU also paid $7 million to acquire Kiffin ($3 million) and Wade ($4 million) from their previous programs. Wade’s new deal, worth $30 million over seven years, is one of the largest contracts in college basketball and he is reportedly expected to have a $12 million roster budget for the men’s basketball team next season.

Not surprisingly, Gov. Landry fully supported Wade’s appointment, just months after he had lamented how much college athletics were costing universities. Kevin McGonigle is headed to the big leagues. The Detroit Tigers announced that McGonigal made the Opening Day roster for the 2026 MLB season. The 21-year-old shortstop is the Tigers’ top prospect and one of the favorites to win the AL Rookie of the Year award this season.

McGonigal has quickly risen through the ranks after being selected by the Tigers with the 37th pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. In 2025, McGonigal was promoted to the Tigers’ Double-A affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves. After hitting 12 home runs and driving in 41 runs in 46 games, the shortstop earned the opportunity to fight for an Opening Day roster spot this season.

In spring training, McGonigal hit two home runs while driving in six runs in 44 at bats. The 21-year-old shortstop had a batting average of .250 and on-base percentage of .888. McGonigal gave Detroit a difficult decision and instead of sending him back to the minor leagues, he would remain as the starting shortstop.

Like other highly regarded MLB prospects, McGonigle would skip Triple-A and go straight to MLB. The Tigers are confident in McGonigal’s offensive abilities and his fielding was significantly improved during spring training. Now, he will slide into the left side of the infield next to third baseman Colt Keith.

McGongile is the consensus No. 2 prospect in baseball and is highly touted in Detroit. It may take time for McGonigal to fully integrate into MLB, but that shouldn’t scare anyone into his long-term potential in the big leagues.

A new rumor claims the Detroit Tigers have named a New York Mets pitching legend as evidence as to why Tarik Skubal shouldn’t get the huge pay raise he was seeking in arbitration earlier this month.

No one expected Skubal to become the kind of pitcher he has become over the past three seasons. After being selected in the ninth round in 2018, reaching the big leagues and remaining productive would have been a nice outcome. However, the Seattle University product has become, arguably, the game’s best pitcher.

In 2024 and 2025, the 29-year-old not only earned All-Star honors in both seasons, but he was also awarded the American League Cy Young Award in both seasons. He even won the AL Pitching Triple Crown (most wins, strikeouts, and best ERA) in 2024.

Their excellence over the past two seasons sets up an interesting battle this winter. Skubal and his agent, Scott Boras, wanted to make history by asking for a raise in the final year of his rookie contract. Unsurprisingly, the Tigers were looking to get the best rate for the top pitcher in the AL because they have a mid-market payroll.

Tigers use deGrom as proof that Skubal shouldn’t get historic raise

Ultimately, the arbitrators ruled in Skubal’s favor and announced that he was entitled to a record-breaking $32 million salary in 2026. Detroit did their best to get him closer to the number they were reportedly aiming for, which was $19 million, and according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, they brought up NY Mets great Jacob deGrom as evidence in support of the number they thought Skubal should get for this season.

Athletic reporter told foul zone The podcast recently reported that the club wanted their pitcher to receive a salary similar to the $9.6 million deGrom received after the 2018 season. This increased his total salary for 2019 to $17 million and came after winning the National League Cy Young and making his second trip to the All-Star Game.

The amount for Skubble would have been less than $9 million, bringing the total to $19 million for the upcoming season. So that would have been a smaller increase, but higher than the annual numbers deGrom received. However, both the arbiters and Rosenthal felt that Skubal was a better pitcher now than the NY Mets legend for his team at the time.
