Islam Makhachev’s long-awaited UFC return has just been confirmed, and it was by his potential opponent.

“I always make my own luck and that’s why I will be the next champion ✍🏽 15-08-26,” Morales wrote in a new post on his Instagram account. From the caption accompanying a photo of him shaking hands with UFC CEO Dana White, it appears he has signed a contract for the fight to take place on August 15.

This is the tentative date for UFC 330 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, PA. No fights have been announced on the card yet, but it would be a good headliner for the event.

The Ecuadorian will be a worthy challenger for the new champion. His record in the UFC is 19-0 (7-0) and he scored a first-round knockout victory over Sean Brady on the same card on which Makhachev won the welterweight title.

Dustin Poirier believes Khamzat Chimaev’s status in the middleweight division took a meaningful hit at UFC 328 in Newark on Saturday night, and he believes whoever faces Chimaev next will walk away with less psychological damage than previous opponents.

Speaking on UFC on Paramount+ after the show, Poirier also took direct aim at the post-fight moment between Chimaev and Sean Strickland, suggesting that the reconciliation revealed some uneasiness about the entire buildup.

“In the next fight, no matter who he faces, it will be hard to scare him because his aura has been damaged this week,” Poirier said. “With the back-and-forth, I thought it was real. I think it affected his whole aura this week. And putting the belt on Strickland — like, come on, man. He definitely worked for us.”

Poirier’s point lies in the fact that Chimaev created a unique figure in the sport. The undefeated record was an important part of his mystique, but there was also a sense of danger that surrounded him in preparation for every fight.

The conversation between Strickland and Chimaev before UFC 328 turned into some of the harshest pre-fight trash talk in recent memory, touching on religion, ethnicity, and physical threats, which made the confrontation truly unsettling.

Whether Chimaev gets an immediate rematch or Strickland defends against another challenger has not yet been confirmed by the UFC.

Max Holloway has addressed the growing speculation about being linked to a rematch with Conor McGregor at UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas, admitting that he has been appealed by the fight for personal reasons, while confirming that he has yet to receive a formal offer from the UFC.

McGregor plans to return to action for the first time in five years after suffering a broken foot in his trilogy against Dustin Poirier in 2021, with UFC 329 emerging as the most likely destination during International Fight Week. If Prates wants to prove he’s worthy of a title fight soon, avenging his only loss in the UFC – a blowout to Ian Machado Garry in April 2025 – should be an option. Both have possibly been blocked from a title fight by Michael Morales. So the No. 1 contenders facing off in a rematch could easily headline another Fight Night card. Especially if it’s in Brazil.

On Saturday morning (in the United States), two of the planet’s best welterweights faced off in the main event of UFC Perth, when former division king Jack Della Maddalena took on dangerous Brazilian striker Carlos Prates.

A win could bring the former champions back into title contention this year. However, it didn’t take long to see that Prates was the better fighter, and in two-plus rounds, he made it through surgery and dismantled Della Maddalena en route to a TKO victory. With this victory, his name has been included in the discussion of contenders for 2026.

Joaquin Buckley has faced many hardships during his UFC career. However, most of this was at middleweight. But since he bulked up to 170 pounds last year, the “New Mansa” has won six in a row. Three of these wins came against great players of this era, Vicente Luque, Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington.

His biggest test to date came when he faced division veteran Kamaru Usman at UFC Atlanta. However, while he is one of the most dangerous strikers in the weight class, the former champ exposed his major shortcomings in a lopsided decision defeat.

Sean Brady has been very impressive during his 10-fight run in the UFC. After a loss against former champion Belal Muhammad three years earlier, he scored three major wins, including a win against another former champion Leon Edwards. However, he ran into serious trouble against heavy-hitter Michael Morales at UFC 322. The knockout loss he suffered may have cost him a title shot in 2026.

8. Shavkat Rakhmonov (19-0)

Shavkat Rakhmonov has proven time and again that he can ultimately capture UFC gold. He cemented this fact with a hard-fought victory over fellow rising star Ian Garry at UFC 310. Although he was not the best version of himself, he went undefeated at 19–0 despite battling a serious knee injury.

However, knee problems are becoming a serious problem. The disease sidelined him for the entire 2025. Now, he is expected to miss much of 2026 after re-injuring the joint and requiring another surgery. That’s why he drops down our latest UFC welterweight rankings and could eventually fall out of the top 10 by the summer.

7. Kamaru Usman (21-4)

For six consecutive years, Kamaru Usman set a great standard of excellence as he built a resume that will guarantee him a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame. He would go on to be known as one of the greatest welterweight fighters of all time and one of the best pound-for-pound competitors of his era. However, all good things come to an end.

Still, despite losing three fights, the 38-year-old showed at UFC Atlanta that he is far from over. Earned a very impressive decision win over one of the fastest rising stars in the division. Although he may not fight for gold again, Usman remains an elite talent at 170 pounds.

6. Belal Muhammad (24-4)

Belal Muhammad has long received a lot of criticism for his fighting style, but the impressive results cannot be denied, and it has catapulted him over the top to become the welterweight king in 2024. However, it is extremely difficult to live there, and that is what creates legends.

Unfortunately, after becoming champion, Muhammad suffered two disappointing defeats. The most recent case came against Ian Machado Gary in November. There is no serious doubt that he will ever fight for the title again.

5. Jack Della Maddalena (18-4)

Australia’s Jack Della Maddalena has become his country’s second largest MMA exporter. The DWCS contract winner won his first seven inside the Octagon – including five finishes – and earned a title shot in May 2025. In his first shot at gold, he was successful, taking the belt from Belal Muhammad.

However, staying on top has been difficult for the Australian team. In his first title defense, he was soundly defeated by former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Then, despite being in front of his countrymen, Carlos Prates demolished them in May. JDM is firmly out of the title picture in 2026.

4. Carlos Prates (24-7)

Since earning his UFC contract at the Contender Series three years ago, Carlos Prates has been excelling in the Octagon. Win their first four – they all finish. However, he got a bump in the road in April 2025 when fellow title contender Ian Machado Garry knocked him out.

But since then he has bounced back from that setback. Winning three in a row, they have all been eliminated again, and the most recent was a dominant destruction of former division king Jack Della Maddalena. The Brazilian is now a legitimate title contender.

3. Ian Machado Gary (17-1)

Weighing in at 170 pounds, Ian Machado is a notable part of Gary’s new wave of rising stars. He is a very technical striker who is arguably the best self-promoter in the division. He has already achieved many big victories inside the Octagon. However, his biggest victory came in November, when he defeated former division king Belal Muhammad.

By completely shutting down Muhammad’s grappling game in Qatar, the Irishman showed he is more skilled than he is given credit for.

2. Michael Morales (19-0) – Top Contender

Ecuador’s Michael Morales is quickly becoming one of the most feared fighters in the division. After an impressive performance on the regional scene, he won five straight inside the Octagon, including three finishes. However, in their last two encounters, they have defeated two of the best players in the division over the past five years. The most recent occurred at UFC 322 when he shut down a title opportunity with an impressive knockout victory over Shawn Brady.

The UFC has removed Colby Covington from its official welterweight rankings, ending his tenure in the top 15 as of 2017.

Covington was removed from the list in the latest edition of the 170-pound rankings released Tuesday, replacing Mike Malott and Yaroslav Amosov in the top 15. This removal brings an end to a situation that has been criticized for years.

In January, UFC CEO Dana White acknowledged that it was strange for Covington to still be ranked 14th in one of the sport’s most competitive divisions, given Covington’s prolonged inactivity. Covington fought only once in each of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. His most recent win was a TKO loss to Joaquin Buckley in December 2024, and his last win came against the now-retired Jorge Masvidal in March 2022.

Covington ignored the criticism at the time and focused on his public persona rather than engaging in the substance of the argument. “It doesn’t really matter what Dana White thinks about me,” Covington told reporters in January.

“I’m a world champion. I’m Donald Trump’s favorite fighter. I’m America’s champion. I’m the King of Miami. You can never take those titles away from me. Take me out of those rankings, but whatever happens, I’m still the greatest welterweight. It doesn’t matter what number is next to my name. I know what I’m capable of, and I know I’m still the best fighter and wrestler on planet Earth.”

Despite his self-described status as Donald Trump’s favorite fighter, Covington failed to earn a spot at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House on June 14, a card for which he had publicly campaigned. He admitted that he was disappointed to miss the event and currently has no definite plans to return to the Octagon.

Covington has also been active outside of the UFC, competing in the Real American Freestyle earlier this year and defeating Dillon Danis by technical fall. He is expected to headline RAF 09 in Dallas on May 30, giving him a competitive outlet while his UFC future remains in limbo. This should also give fight fans hope that the UFC will accelerate the removal of inactive fighters from the rankings going forward.

On Saturday night the UFC will head north to Canada for the second edition of UFC Fight Night.

The card is scheduled to take place at the Canada Life Center in Winnipeg, Canada. Josh Hockitt’s bizarre attempt to draw attention to himself during the UFC 327 media event is more proof of why the company’s product is falling apart.

Fight fans are used to this industry being a little weird. While two people going into a cage or ring attracts a lot of people, you still need to promote a fight to get people to spend their hard-earned money on tickets or streaming subscriptions to see it.

In their quest to make big bucks, fight fans have come up with a lot of things to help draw attention to the upcoming fight. And over the past 10 years, some UFC fighters have gone to strange and ugly places to promote their fights. However, on Wednesday, Josh Hockitt went to a silly spot in an attempt to draw interest for his return at UFC 327 this weekend.

Instead of the usual media day tradition of taking questions from the mixed martial arts media, the 28-year-old decided to deliver a pro wrestling-style promo while wearing his trademark American flag bandana and sunglasses. Although there have been UFC fighters in the past who have delivered some excellent wrestling promos (see: Chael Sonnen), Hokit has provided something truly bizarre.

While playing the character “The Incredible Hoke”, he was breathing heavily, rhyming, and at one point began talking like a child. However, this was not the end of it. The UFC heavyweight then changed character, began using a Mexican-American accent and wore a knit cap over his eyes.

This was a highly effective start to the 2010s for Chael Sonnen. In the late 2010s, former two-division champion and company icon Conor McGregor took it even further and became an international superstar due to his courageous and flamboyant personality. After him, Colby Covington rubbed many people the wrong way by creating a champion for MAGA leaning fans. Then, in recent years, former middleweight champion Sean Strickland has built a brand apart from xenophobic and sexist views.

However, they could back it up in the ring and had varying levels of charisma. This is not the case for most fighters, and many of them feel that they need to go to absurd lengths to gain notoriety and try to squeeze all the opportunities and money out of the sport.

The fight promotion style that the UFC has long nurtured is now going to strange places, but that’s not the company’s only problem.

Is the UFC losing its cool factor?

Over the years, as the company has tried to hold events almost every weekend, the quality of the product has declined.

Fans are complaining more and more about weak cards and weak main events. Making matters worse, while the Paramount+ era is better financially for fans, the UFC is much less willing to spend big bucks to make big fights if they can’t use pay-per-view points to make deals.

PPVs are no longer an option, the UFC prefers to be cheap and it has become much more difficult to compete with elite stars like McGregor, Ronda Rousey, Jon Jones, Ilya Topuria or Islam Makhachev. So top talent competes less now. This has created a disappointing situation for the fans of the company.

The talent pool is shrinking, it’s going to stupid places for self-promotion, and the quality of UFC events has diminished. The UFC has a historic card on the White House lawn in June that’s just good rather than great. Although the company has grown considerably in recent years, it is still not as good as it was four or five years ago.

Speaking with MMA Junkie, Sonnen assessed the current status of one of MMA’s most anticipated trilogies for nearly a decade and concluded that the rubber match is never going to be possible due to the circumstances surrounding both fighters.

The talks follow Diaz’s recent revelation that he was in talks with the UFC about a return, with a trilogy fight against McGregor being the centerpiece of those discussions. Diaz passed up the opportunity, saying he wanted to fight Charles Oliveira for the BMF title instead, and eventually accepted a fight against Mike Perry on May 16 on Netflix.

Diaz said that his reason for leaving McGregor was that he only wanted a trilogy when both men were moving forward, not when one of them was on the way out.

Chael Sonnen says Nate Diaz isn’t cheating

Sonnen said, “Nate Diaz lives by a code, and you won’t be able to escape it.” “You won’t bribe him, you won’t pressure him. He lives by a code. It just gets complicated, but that’s not his negotiating strategy. He’s serious when he says, ‘I don’t want to fight Conor, Conor has been out for five years, and by the way, he’s got a leg injury. Let him come back, get a win and then I’ll come in.’

He said, “He wants to fight Charles Oliveira. Nobody wants to fight Charles Oliveira. Nate is serious.” “And it’s not just about Charles. It’s not just a jiu-jitsu fight. On the McGregor side of the equation, there is momentum building behind a return fight at UFC 329 in Las Vegas on July 11, which will take place almost exactly five years after he last competed against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 and suffered a broken leg.

Max Holloway has emerged as a potential opponent for that return. McGregor currently has two fights remaining on his deal, barring a new contract, putting him on a timeline that may not align with Diaz’s leadership. Sonnen thinks McGregor has a limited runway left, no matter what he says publicly.

“My guess on Conor is we’re going to get him another one, and I think we can really enjoy it,” Sonnen said. “Now, if you talk to Conor, and I did, you’ll get him at least three more times. He’ll make some fights and box. I think we’re going to get Conor for one more fight. I think we’ll probably miss the trilogy. Sadly.”
