Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Sporting’s Maxi Araujo in the summer.
The Uruguay international is attracting the interest of a number of clubs and Chelsea and Tottenham are both on the list.
Araújo joined the Lions from Mexican side Toluca in August 2024. He has been a regular, operating mainly as a left-back, and occasionally as a wing-back and winger.
This season, he has played 35 matches and 27 were as left-back. In those matches he has scored six goals and provided four assists.

Chelsea and Tottenham travel for Maxi Araujo

Earlier this week, Sporting overcame a 3-0 first leg defeat by defeating Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League last 16. The Lions won the match 5–1 in extra time and secured a place in the quarter-finals.
Araújo played 110 minutes and scored the fourth goal in extra time, which was crucial for Sporting to advance in the competition.

‘Interest has increased’ as Chelsea, Tottenham, La Liga sides and the Rossoneri are now keen. In fact, four clubs went to Portugal specifically to watch the South American.
The Blues signed Giovani Quenda and Dario Assugo from the Lions in 2025. Earlier in the season, Sport Witness broadcast news Chelsea are traveling to Portugal in search of more players.
Chelsea, Spurs and two other clubs have gathered positive reports about Araújo and whether that is enough to make a move is not yet clear.
Why can summer deals be complicated?
Sporting, from their perspective, want to offer him an extension to improve on his current salary of €650-700k per year. He has a release clause of €80 million and whether this will increase with a new deal is unclear.
Maxi Araujo has a contract until 2029, and Transfermarkt keeps his value €25m. The agency manages the GBG Global Business Group player. They manage 83 players including Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Santiago Bueno.
