The Vancouver Canucks ended the year with a heavy 6-1 loss to the Oilers.

The Vancouver Canucks ended their season with a 6-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Thursday night.

Matt Savoie scored a first-period hat trick, Connor McDavid had four assists, and the Oilers clinched second place in the Pacific Division with a game that was originally decided before the opening period ended.

Ty Mueller scored the only goal for Vancouver, the first of his NHL career.

According to NHL.com, Edmonton’s victory also secured home advantage for the first-round playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks.

ESPN reported that McDavid finished the regular season with 138 points to win the NHL scoring race, while Savoie’s three-goal first period was the first hat trick of his NHL career.

On the Vancouver side, the loss snapped a three-game winning streak and capped another difficult year.

Edmonton had too much pace, too much skill and too much space to work with. Mueller’s goal gave Vancouver a nice moment, and Kevin Lankinen struggled all night, but the big size of the game never really changed after the initial rush.

game flow

At 1:58 of the first period, Josh Samanski opened the scoring after Colton Dach’s centering pass was deflected off the skates. Savoie doubled the lead at 6:48 with a wrist shot from the left circle, then Vancouver finally responded at 12:10 when Muller took a pass from Curtis Douglas, hesitated, and scored his first NHL goal. Lankinen also recorded a secondary assist in the game.

For a moment, it looked like the Canucks had something to build on. He didn’t. Savoie hit a power play at 14:35, then completed the hat trick at 19:02 when McDavid and Evan Bouchard moved the puck cleanly through the zone.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added a power-play goal at 16:46 of the second game when Jack Hyman, returning from a five-game absence, found the side of the net.

Colton Dach fired a wrist shot over Lankinen’s glove to make it 6-1 in the third, and from there it was close to the final horn.

Connor Ingram needed just 11 saves for the win, which tells you how little sustained pressure Vancouver provided. Edmonton got six goals on 35 shots. Lankinen stopped 29 shots, which showed how bad the score could have been.

This wasn’t a bad bounce or a hot scorer. It was a loose, messy night against a team that knew what was on the line.

Mueller had at least a small hope of getting his first goal. But for Canucks fans, the bigger feeling was probably general, relief that the year is over and hope that the next version of this team looks more settled than the one that ended here.

Edmonton is headed into the playoffs with momentum. Vancouver is entering the offseason with a lot to answer for.

Vancouver Canucks spoil Ducks’ playoff bid in 4-3 OT win

Marco Rossi scored on a power play with 10 seconds left in overtime, helping the Vancouver Canucks beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 on Sunday night at the Honda Centre.

The goal came after Chris Kreider was called for slashing and prevented Anaheim from clinching its first playoff berth since the 2017–18 season.

Vancouver got a goal and an assist from Rossi, the first NHL goal from Curtis Douglas, a power-play finish from Jake DeBrusk and a short-handed strike from Brock Boeser.

Nikita Tolopillo made 24 saves, while Anaheim wasted a two-goal night from Cutter Gauthier and 22 stops from Lucas Dostal.

Anaheim came across like a team ready to punch its playoff ticket on home soil, Vancouver responded with more pressure than you might expect from a club in this difficult season, and by the third period it had turned into one of those loose, tense nights where no one seemed safe with the lead.

game flow

At 3:41 of the first period, Gauthier opened the scoring by finishing a one-timer in the open side after Chris Kreider tapped in a rebound in the crease.

Vancouver answered at 10:49 when Douglas pushed in a loose puck for his first NHL goal, a feel-good moment that the Canucks desperately needed on a night.

Late in the period, DeBrusk took the lead on a Rossi point shot on the power play at 14:37, and just like that Vancouver turned an early deficit into a 2–1 lead.

That score lasted for a second, then everything took off. Boeser made it 3-1 just 4:28 into the third after taking a pass at the right point during an Anaheim power play and scoring short-handed on a breakaway. This should have been the goal of the breathing room.

However, Gauthier answered with a power-play finish of his own 37 seconds later, then Leo Karlsson tied it at 3–3 with a backhand from a sharp angle at 6:56. Suddenly, the ducks have the building back.

Gauthier became Anaheim’s first 40-goal scorer since Corey Perry in 2013-14, which tells you how big his night was for him.

NHL.com also noted that the Ducks have now lost seven of eight, even though they are in position to pick up a win soon. This is the cruel part for Anaheim. They were right there, at home, with a chance to close the door, and yet they let Vancouver linger long enough to be doomed late on.

Adam Foote said after the game that his group could have easily stopped pushing, but they didn’t, and it was true. After Anaheim tied, Vancouver held their own instead of letting the game slip away.

In overtime, Rossi got set up in the right circle and DeBrusk found him for the winner at 4:50. It was a clean finish and the game was over.

For the Canucks, this isn’t a huge turning point. I’m not going to pretend that it was. But it was another sign that the young pieces and fill-in guys are still giving this team something to work with.

Vancouver Canucks beat Golden Knights 2-1

In a moment of hope for Vancouver Canucks fans, Max Sasson gave the team a second period lead, but it did not last. The Canucks ultimately lost 2–1 to the Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Arena, with Cole Smith scoring the winner midway through the third. The Canucks also came up empty late on the power play due to the goalie being pulled.

Vegas extended its winning streak to four games and remains unbeaten under new coach John Tortorella. ESPN’s recap noted that the win also completed a three-game season sweep of the Canucks, something most fans would like to forget.

Despite the result, it was not a complete walkover. The game was on edge, spaced out and didn’t look very clean in any way. When a team is struggling, these are the nights where a mistake, a fumble, or a lost puck in the neutral zone can ruin the game. And that’s pretty much what happened here with the Canucks.

game flow

NHL: Vegas Golden Knights at Vancouver Canucks
bob frid-images

At 12:50 of the second period, Sasson finally broke through for the Canucks, beating Carter Hart with a wrist shot over the glove for his 13th goal of the season. It felt like the Canucks earned something for sticking with the slower, tighter game.

However, less than three minutes later, Braden McNabb answered for Vegas with a shot through traffic, and before the Canucks could really regain the lead, everything was reset.

Then the Golden Knights took the lead. Smith scored with 12:13 left in the third minute after a neutral-zone takeaway and a pass from Nick Dowd put him in high position.

The Golden Knights’ defense did the rest, including killing penalties in the final two minutes. The Canucks got the chances you wanted late, with Rasmus Andersen called for interference and Nikita Tolopilo pulling the extra attacker, but the push never ended.

the statue that stands out

A number is more important than anything else in this game. The Golden Knights held the Canucks to just 11 shots. This is the fewest shots allowed in its short franchise history.

In comparison, Tolopillo made 26 saves at the other end. That contradiction speaks volumes.

The Canucks got enough goals to go around, but they didn’t generate enough aggression to generate pressure.

For the Canucks, it felt familiar in the worst way. There was effort, there was a brief lead, and there was even a real chance to force overtime late. But the attack remained weak.

The Canucks head to Los Angeles for the start of a three-game road trip, while the Golden Knights head to Seattle with a little more life than a week ago.

Vancouver Canucks shock Avalanche 8-6 in high-scoring thriller

The Vancouver Canucks beat the Colorado Avalanche 8-6 at Ball Arena on Wednesday night and for once, the ricochet mostly broke the team’s way.

Brock Boeser had a hat trick and an assist, Teddy Blueger scored twice and Marcus Pettersson scored the winning goal after Vancouver’s four-goal lead vanished.

After the win, the Canucks have now snapped a six-game losing streak by defeating the top team in the league, which says everything about how strange this game was.

Reuters reported that the Canucks set a season-high number of goals scored, while the Avalanche, who are still in first place in the Western Conference, spent most of the night chasing a game they were unwilling to take control of until very late.

I’ve watched enough Canucks hockey to know when one of those warning labels is attached when the game starts. It had it immediately, not in the general direction.

game flow

NHL: Vancouver Canucks and Colorado Avalanche
Ron Chenoy-Image Images

Max Sasson scored 29 seconds in, the Canucks’ fastest goal since October 2024, and even after Nathan MacKinnon responded at 1:22, his 50th of the season, the Canucks kept coming rather than folding.

At 5:21 of the first period, Blueger scored short-handed on a 2-on-1 with Liam Ohgren. Jake DeBrusk then added a power-play goal at 11:38 after redirecting Elias Pettersson’s cross-crease pass.

Gabriel Landeskog made it 3-2 late in the first, but the Canucks never let the Avalanche settle. In what was a surprising matchup, the Canucks weren’t just making money, they were doing it in different ways, early on, on the penalty kill, on the power play and later in empty nets.

Bluger struck again at 5:02 of the second, this time alone in the slot after taking a centering pass from Sasson. Boeser followed with goals at 9:42 and 15:21, and suddenly the Canucks were ahead 6–2 against a team that had come rolling.

The second Boeser goal ended Mackenzie Blackwood’s night, with Scott Wedgwood taking over after six goals on 19 shots, NHL.com reported. This is the type of score line that usually tells you the game is over. usually.

plot twist

Then the game went sideways for the Canucks. Sam Malinski scored 22 seconds after the goalkeeper change. Then Parker Kelly made it 6–4 just 14 seconds into the third, Brent Burns got Colorado within one at 13:21, and Malinski made it 6–6 after just 37 seconds.

The avalanche slowly obliterated that 6-2 hole, and it seemed as if the entire building had tilted in one direction. For Canucks fans, that kind of collapse has usually been the end, not the setup for another turn.

What changed the mood again was how quickly the Canucks responded. Pettersson scored 23 seconds after the tying goal, his first since November, beating Wedgwood from the top of the left circle to make the score 7–6.

That reaction was the greatest moment of the game. Boeser later added an empty-netter at 18:31 to complete his seventh regular season hat trick.

There is no point pretending that this will clear up the weather. It’s not like that. The Canucks still blew a huge lead, still gave up six goals, and still looked shaky when Colorado pushed. But they beat the NHL’s top team in their own building, with MacKinnon scoring 50 and the Avalanche trying to ride the spirit of another comeback. Sometimes you have to endure the chaos and move on. The Canucks will face the Minnesota Wild today (Thursday, April 2) at 8:00 PM ET at Xcel Energy Centre.

Vancouver Canucks lose 4–2 in Kane’s 1,000th NHL game

The Vancouver Canucks lost 4-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Monday night, spoiling Evander Kane’s 1,000th NHL game.

They gave up their second lead before the third period was over. Shea Theodore and Reilly Smith scored 1:17 late in the second. Cole Smith added an empty-netter to complete the scoring.

According to NHL.com, this was John Tortorella’s debut behind the Vegas bench since Bruce Cassidy was fired on Sunday, and the Golden Knights were in desperate need of some change.

Vegas had lost three in a row and six of seven, yet found enough life to rally after falling behind 1-0 and 2-1.

ESPN reported that the win kept the Golden Knights in third place in the Pacific, just one point behind Edmonton.

Canucks had some bite

NHL: Vancouver Canucks at Vegas Golden Knights
Stephen R. sylvany-imagen images

I’ve seen enough Canucks losses this season to know this was a little different. Its bite was more. The team played with more edge and urgency than in most games since the Olympic break, even if by the end the result looked familiar. The effort was definitely better.

At 12:19 of the first period, Kane gave Vancouver a 1–0 lead on a clean backhand finish after being sent in by Jake DeBrusk on a 2-on-1. It was a nice moment.

After Vegas tied it on a Rasmus Andersen goal at 7:48 of the second, Brock Boeser responded by deflecting Filip Hronek’s point shot past Adin Hill on the power play at 12:17.

For a while, it looked like the Canucks might continue this for that period. He didn’t.

Then came the period which changed everything. Ivan Barbashev won the race for the puck and found him alone in the slot, after which Theodore made it 2–2 at 17:17, and Reilly Smith put Vegas ahead at 18:34 on a one-timer from the right circle.

The Golden Knights improved their play after the opening period, and the shot-attempt differential told the story better than the scoreboard for a long time, 67-33 in favor of Vegas. Kevin Lankinen had to be sharp to keep the Canucks close.

lessons learned

Adam Foote later said that Vancouver did not pull away, and Sportsnet quoted him as saying that the Canucks weathered the toughness of Vegas and competed all night.

Sportsnet also pointed to growing pains on the blue line, and one example was hard to ignore when Elias Pettersson Jr. misplayed a two-on-one, leading to Theodore’s goal. Young defenders sometimes learn by burning but it’s still sad to see it happen in real time.

The Canucks pressed in the third, but did not have enough success. Hill finished with 22 saves, Cole Smith hit an empty net at 18:50, and Vancouver lost its sixth consecutive game.

The stat that stands out is that Lankinen made 30 saves. He gave the Canucks a chance that was much more time than the skaters before him deserved.

Kuemper records shutout as Vancouver Canucks fall 4‑0 to Los Angeles Kings

Darcy Kuemper stopped all 19 shots to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Arena on a brutal Thursday night.

According to NHL.com, the win snapped a four-game losing streak for Los Angeles and moved the Kings to within one point of the second Western Conference wild-card spot.

For the Kings, it was the consecutive wins needed for a team in the playoff race. Kuemper’s clean sheet was his 3rd of the season and the 39th shutout of his career.

For the Canucks, it looked like the franchise going through the rounds holding the rope. In fact, the score could have been worse. Kevin Lankinen made 34 saves, and that number tells only a part of it.

NHL: Los Angeles Kings at Vancouver Canucks
bob frid-images

The Kings were bigger, heavier and more direct, and it continued to force the Canucks into defensive changes that made the shutout inevitable.

sovereign king

At 17:34 of the first period, Scott Laughton opened the scoring on a power play with a deflection in front, following a byfield shot from the right circle.

Earlier, Kuemper had put up a big stop on Teddy Blueger in the slot, and on reflection, that was the beginning and end of the night for the Canucks.

Moore made it 2-0 just 1:21 in on another tip puck across the crease. Artemi Panarin made it 3–0 with 39 seconds remaining after Adrian Kempe forced Jake DeBrusk into a neutral-zone turnover.

The Kings outshot the Canucks 32–12 over two periods, and Canucks coach Adam Foote said Los Angeles came out “big, heavy on the puck, and mean and hungry”. This looks exactly like the game was supposed to look like.

The Canucks never created enough offensive-zone time, and when they finally got a decent look late, Kuemper put aside a Drew O’Connor redirect from the top of the crease.

Soon after, Byfield finished it off with a goal into the empty net. Ordinary hockey defeated hopeful hockey.

familiar ending

The Canucks have now lost four in a row and end their eight-game homestand at 2-6-0. They have shut out 14 of their last 17, and it was the sixth time the club was shut out this season, including a fifth home shutout that set a franchise record.

For Canucks fans, now comes the hard part. It’s not just about losing. What little room this team leaves for itself once the game starts to tilt in the wrong direction.

温哥华加人队 (Vancouver Canucks) 以 4-0 负于洛杉矶国王队 (Los Angeles Kings)

Vancouver Canucks drop 5-3 decision as Ducks stay hot

On Tuesday night’s heartbreaker at Rogers Arena, Mason McTavish broke a 3-3 tie at 5:45 of the third period.

From that point the game slowly went away from the Vancouver Canucks, with Troy Terry adding an empty-netter with five seconds remaining to confirm the Anaheim Ducks’ 5–3 victory.

Anaheim got two goals from Mikael Granlund, three assists from John Carlson and 27 saves from Lucas Dostal for its third consecutive win.

Reuters reported that the Ducks have now extended their point streak to five games and recorded their 24th comeback win of the season, which is tied for the NHL lead. It’s all positive for Ducks fans.

better beginning, same end

Let’s cut to the chase: This wasn’t a bad loss for the Canucks. It was not flat or lifeless. Even Sportsnet said the Canucks’ effort was better than that of St. Louis and Tampa Bay, and the shot count backed it up. Anaheim was only ahead 34–30.

Still the same weakness continued to be visible. Too many Grade-A looks against, too many open ice, too many chances that cause Kevin Lankinen to work harder than he should.

At 5:45 of the first period, Jake DeBrusk opened the scoring after taking a pass from low on the power play and sweeping the puck across the crease and inside the far post.

Anaheim responded in the second when Alex Killorn scored at 5:26, then Granlund put the Ducks ahead at 7:50 by batting in a puck that went over Lankinen.

The Canucks pushed back. Brock Boeser tied it 2–2 on another power play at 13:13 when Filip Hronek sold a slap shot, stepped around Ryan Poehling and passed the puck. That assist gave Elias Pettersson his 500th NHL point, a nice stat on a night that still went down poorly.

NHL: Anaheim Ducks at Vancouver Canucks
bob frid-images

the answer that hurt

Barely a minute went into the third when Granlund scored again on the power play after Anaheim’s lengthy 5-on-3 second period.

Drew O’Connor made the score 3–3 at 2:22, completing a rebound for his 17th goal and a new career high. For a moment, the Canucks look like they may have some inspiration.

However, the game changed when Cutter missed a breakaway moment before Gauthier McTavish came on the ice, took a return pass from Jackson LaCombe and scored his first goal in 15 games over Lankinen’s glove.

The Canucks did not back down and continued to push.

Regardless, the Canucks have now lost three in a row, 13 of their last 16, and were officially out of playoff contention as of last weekend.

The Ducks, on the other hand, are leading the Pacific and look like a team that has finally come out the other side of a long rebuild.

Vancouver Canucks couldn’t overturn 6-2 loss to Lightning

The Vancouver Canucks lost 6-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Rogers Arena on Thursday night, and the game got away from them long before the final horn.

Nikita Kucherov and Anthony Cirelli each finished with a goal and two assists, while Andrei Vasilevskiy made 19 saves as Tampa Bay took control for most of the night.

The Lightning looked to be sharper after a rough outing and quickly hit the nail on the head. Tampa Bay began a four-game road trip by winning its second consecutive game, and its top line of Brandon Hagel, Cirelli and Kucherov combined to finish plus-11 for eight points.

When a team is on the rise, that kind of lead is very difficult to handle. It was too much for the Canucks, who were trying to win consecutive home games for the first time this season.

You can tell when a game is going away from a team, and it has become increasingly slippery for the Canucks. The team only trailed 1-0 after the first period, but there wasn’t much room to breathe and once Tampa Bay hit the gas in the second, it became a very long night.

At 17:37 of the first, Jake Guentzel opened the scoring with a deflection into the slot of a Charles-Edouard d’Astous point shot. Then the flood came. Darren Reddish made it 2–0 just 49 seconds into the second minute, Yanni Gourde added the second goal at 4:16, and Kucherov made it 4–0 at 5:31 when his shot bounced off Filip Hronek near the crease.

a push that couldn’t last

NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning at Vancouver Canucks
bob frid-images

Liam Ohgren gave the Canucks a little life with a quick goal from the middle of the circle at 12:06 of the second. Linus Karlsson added another by batting a rebound out of the air at 7:04 of the third minute after a strong chance by Marco Rossi.

For a moment, despite trailing 4-2, it seemed like maybe the Canucks had finally reassembled the building. Faith that could barely last for a moment.

Just 32 seconds later, Cirelli restored the three-goal lead at 7:36 when a pass from Brandon Hagel bounced off his skate at the top of the crease. Hagel then scored at 10:35 to close the score at 6-2.

Those last two goals destroyed whatever suspense was left and leveled it.

Difficult lesson, familiar feeling

Marco Rossi did his part with two assists, and Kevin Lankinen stopped 24 shots, but it was one of those nights when the gaps were visible.

NHL.com reports that after going 4-18-4 in their last 26 games, the Canucks are now 3-3-1 in their last seven games, which tells you this team has settled down a bit recently, but there’s still a long way to go.

Even the most die-hard Canucks fan will admit that Tampa Bay was cleaner, faster and more direct.

Vancouver Canucks beat Panthers 5-2 in strong home win

The Vancouver Canucks defeated the Florida Panthers 5-2 in what was a spectacular Tuesday night at Rogers Arena.

Elias Pettersson scored twice, including the 200th goal of his NHL career, and Marco Rossi added a goal and two assists. Brock Boeser had three assists and Kevin Lankinen stopped 21 shots.

Pettersson had gone 20 games without a goal before scoring twice on the power play and Lankinen got his first win in 10 starts.

The Canucks have now won two of their last three, which might not sound that good, but after the stretch this team has endured, it makes sense.

I’ve watched enough Canucks hockey to know when a game starts to feel fragile, even when the scoreboard looks safe. Vancouver came out with a real jump, yet there was the same familiar tension after Matthew Tkachuk tied the game in the first period.

Against a team like Florida, these are the moments that usually turn into trouble. This time, he did not do so.

game flow

At 3:49 of the first, Pettersson opened the scoring on a one-timer from the right circle following Rossi’s cross-ice pass. Tkachuk replied at 11:41 when an awkward bounce from Carter Verhaeghe left him alone in front.

Peterson struck again on the power play at 13:40, with a shot that bounced off two Panthers defensemen for goal No. 200. Rossi then took a 3–1 lead late when Boeser won a puck battle and fed him a pass in front. There was some bite in that first period.

Then came the tension. Sam Bennett made it 3-2 in the second, and it looked like the Panthers were hanging on long enough to flip the script. Instead, Aatu Ratie restored the two-goal lead after a failed clearing pass, and later Drew O’Connor finished another chance from just above the crease.

As NHL.com noted, three of Vancouver’s goals came when skaters were left open in front of the Florida net, and Panthers coach Paul Morris acknowledged that these breakdowns were unusual for his club.

A better night, but not a clean slate

NHL: Florida Panthers at Vancouver Canucks
bob frid-images

The Associated Press reported that Lankinen was playing his 200th NHL game, while Panthers defenseman Seth Jones returned after missing 26 games.

Reuters found that Sergei Bobrovsky was making his 800th NHL appearance, but the milestone night belonged to the Canucks.

Pettersson’s last goal came on January 13, making it his longest drought in the NHL. He said he’s trying to simplify and shoot more, and you can see that in the way he attacks his look instead of overthinking about it.

Boeser also supported this, saying that a confident Peterson would have to let that shot go. For Vancouver, it means more than a nice night in March. This changes the feel of the room a bit.

The reality is that this win doesn’t fix the season. I’m not pretending otherwise. Still, for Canucks fans who have waited a while to see Pettersson look dangerous again and for the team to actually finish their chances, it may have seemed worth holding out for a few days.

The Panthers visit Edmonton next, and the Canucks stay at home to face Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Vancouver Canucks lose to Senators in shutout after playing just 16 shots

Another day, another loss for the Vancouver Canucks. On Monday night at Rogers Arena, the Ottawa Senators won 2-0, and the score faithfully reflected the flow of the game.

At 10:11 of the second period, Artem Zub’s shot from the point hit Shane Pinto high, and the puck fell into open space, where Ridley Gregg collected it alone in the slot before switching from backhand to forehand and beating Kevin Lankinen.

Vancouver challenged, arguing that the puck was played with a hand, but review ruled it a deflection rather than a hand pass, so the goal stood.

Brady Tkachuk later sealed it with an empty-net goal late in the third minute.

According to NHL.com, the big story for the Senators is momentum. The Senators extended their point streak to seven games, ending the five-game trip at 4–0–1, and got another point from Tim Stützle, who extended his scoring run to 13 games.

The Senators have now gone 5-0-2 over the seven-game span, which says a lot more about where this team is going than where the Canucks are stuck.

NHL: Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks
bob frid-images

Reimer takes charge

James Reimer stopped all 16 shots he faced, and when you add in the fact that the Senators’ formation stuck all night, even with top defenseman Jake Sanderson out of the lineup, it’s an even more disappointing story for the Canucks.

Adding fuel to the fire was the fact that Reimer was making his first start since Feb. 5, which highlighted the shutout even more. It was his 1st shutout of the season and the 32nd of his NHL career.

I’ve watched enough Canucks hockey over the years to know when the night is starting to wear thin, and this time it was starting to show quite early.

The Canucks never applied much pressure, never forced the Senators into long, ugly defensive turnovers and finished the third period with only three shots on goal. That included two power plays without a single shot, which is the kind of detail that tells the story better than any disappointed postgame quote.

What keeps going wrong?

Reuters reported that the Canucks have now lost five straight at home, and the numbers surrounding this slump are hard to ignore.

The Canucks have won just one in their last 10 games, and it was the ninth time this season they have been held to under 20 shots.

Lankinen did what he could with 22 saves, and CBS coverage found that he at least kept the game within reach long enough for a push that never really came.

For the Canucks, it was another reminder that good goaltending isn’t enough when the offense is quiet for long periods of time.

The Canucks will play the Nashville Predators on Thursday, while the Senators go home to face the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, with real playoff life still ahead of them.

Vancouver Canucks blow early lead to Hurricanes in 6-4 loss

In what has become a familiar result, the Vancouver Canucks lost again. This time, it was a 6–4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at Rogers Arena.

The Canucks held the first-period lead for a while. Nevertheless, Nikolaj Ehlers scored a hat trick for Carolina, including an empty-netter with 14 seconds remaining, concluding the victory.

The Hurricanes came out flying and put the pressure on Vancouver almost immediately, with Carolina outscoring the Canucks 12-1 in the first nine minutes. Still, the Canucks answered, at least early on, and for any fans looking for a glimmer of hope, that part matters.

Andrei Svechnikov opened the scoring on a Carolina power play 1:17 into the game, but Marco Rossi tied it on the man advantage at 16:31, and Filip Hronek later scored to put the Canucks up 2–1 before intermission.

Hronek finished with a goal and two assists, while Elias Pettersson added two assists in one of Vancouver’s better offensive nights in weeks.

when things went wrong

Sean Walker made it 2-2 at 2:30, Ehlers made it 3-2 at 4:19, and Sebastian Aho pushed it to 4-2 on another quick chance at 11:53.

NHL.com noted that Kevin Lankinen was pulled after allowing four goals on 22 shots, and the switch did not settle things as Ehlers scored on the first shot faced by Nikita Tolopilo for a 5–2 lead less than a minute later.

That explosive sequence was fatal. The Canucks pushed back, but the hole was already deep.

Brock Boeser scored on a 5-on-3 late in the second, then Nils Hoglander made it 5-4 on Pettersson’s one-timer at 6:45 of the third.

For a moment, it looked like the Canucks might steal some of the chaos back. Brandon Bussey made a late save for Carolina, and Ehlers completed a hat trick with an empty-net goal.

A slim bright spot for Canucks fans

The one real positive was the power play. The Canucks scored twice with the man advantage, the first time the Canucks have done so since January 2 against Seattle.

Foote said the group is working on it, and with so many bad nights, an increase in confidence is at least something to point to.

It’s also the second 10-goal Canucks game this season, following a wild 8-5 loss at Florida in November. It’s not exactly the kind of category Canucks fans want to revisit, but it does underline how loose the game has become.

nhl draft lottery update

The Canucks sit at 43 points, and the NHL Draft Lottery conversation is no longer a background topic. It’s front and center now.

The standings changed Wednesday night and St. Louis beat Seattle 3-2, moving the Rangers to 31st with 54 points, while the Canucks remained buried in the high-pick mix.

With the March 7 trade deadline approaching, this matters. Advancing in the playoffs no longer seems realistic, and the conversation has clearly shifted toward what can be built from here.

Kraken

Field Hockey Stick Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Length for You

Field Hockey Stick Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Length for You

Field hockey is a sport of precision, pace, and skill. In India, where hockey is a part of our national heritage, choosing the right equipment is the first step toward excellence on the turf. Whether you are aiming for the local club or dreaming of the Olympics, the most critical piece of gear is your stick. But how do you know which size is right for you? A stick that is too long will hinder your control, while one that is too short can lead to back pain.

Why Does the Length of Your Hockey Stick Matter?

In field hockey, the length of your stick affects three main areas: control, reach, and posture. A correctly sized stick allows you to maintain an athletic stance, keeping your eyes on the ball while ensuring your back isn’t strained. If you are a defender, you might prefer a slightly longer stick for extra reach. In contrast, midfielders and forwards often prefer slightly shorter sticks for better dribbling and close-range ball manipulation.

The Standard Measurement Methods

There are two primary ways to determine the right hockey stick size for Indian players:

1. The Hip Method (Best for Beginners)

This is the most common method used in Indian academies. Stand straight with your shoes on. Place the head of the stick on the ground next to your foot. The top of the handle (the end of the stick) should reach your hip bone. If the stick reaches your belly button or higher, it is likely too long.

2. The “U-Bend” or Underarm Method

Hold the stick upside down and tuck the head into your armpit. The handle should end at the middle of your kneecap. If it goes past your knee, it’s too long; if it doesn’t reach your knee, it’s too short.

Hockey Stick Size Chart for Indian Players

While personal preference eventually takes over, here is a general guideline based on height:

Player Height (Feet/Inches)Recommended Stick Length (Inches)
4′ 0″ – 4′ 3″28″ – 30″
4′ 4″ – 4′ 6″32″
4′ 7″ – 5′ 0″34″
5′ 1″ – 5′ 3″35.5″
5′ 4″ – 5′ 10″36.5″
Over 5′ 10″37.5″ or 38.5″

36.5″ vs. 37.5″: The Common Dilemma

In India, the most popular size for adults and teenagers is 36.5 inches. It is widely considered the “standard” size for professional play. However, taller players (above 5’10”) or those playing in defensive positions are increasingly choosing 37.5 inches for greater power and defensive range. If you are unsure, stick with a 36.5″ stick as it offers the best balance for the modern, fast-paced Indian style of play.

Conclusion

Choosing the right field hockey stick is a personal journey. While charts and measurements provide a solid foundation, the best stick is the one that feels like an extension of your arm. For young players in India, it is tempting to buy a longer stick thinking they will “grow into it,” but this can ruin their technique. Always prioritize comfort and control over length. Visit a local sports shop, try both the hip and underarm methods, and pick the one that lets you move freely.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the most common hockey stick size for adults in India?

The 36.5-inch stick is the standard size for most adult men and women in India. It provides the ideal balance of control and power.

2. Can a stick be too long for a child?

Yes. A stick that is too long is heavy and difficult for a child to swing. It can also lead to poor posture and “hacking” at the ball rather than proper dribbling.

3. Do defenders need longer sticks?

Many defenders prefer a 37.5-inch stick because it provides a longer reach for interceptions and more leverage for long-distance clearing hits.

4. How do I know if my hockey stick is the right weight?

Most players prefer “Light” (530g – 560g) for quick skills or “Medium” (560g – 590g) for powerful hitting. If your wrists feel tired after 10 minutes of dribbling, the stick is likely too heavy.

5. Does the material of the stick affect the size I should choose?

No, the material (Wood, Carbon, or Fiberglass) does not change the length you need. However, higher carbon sticks are stiffer and provide more power, regardless of the size.

Vancouver Canucks Nikita Zadorov breaks his stick during play and teammate Quinn Hughes offers his up even with a height difference.

Most Insane NHL Goals of the 2024-25 Season: Best Hockey Highlights

Most Insane NHL Goals of the 2024-25 Season: Best Hockey Highlights

The 2024-25 NHL season has been nothing short of a cinematic experience for hockey fans. From gravity-defying “Michigan” goals to thunderous slap shots that break speed sensors, the talent on display this year has reached a fever pitch. For Indian sports enthusiasts who are increasingly tuning into the fast-paced world of ice hockey, this season offers some of the most spectacular highlights in recent memory.

The Evolution of Scoring: Why 2024-25 is Different

Ice hockey is a game of millimeters, and this season, players like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and rising stars are proving why the NHL is the premier hockey league globally. We have seen a shift toward high-speed transitional play, where hockey scores are often decided by individual moments of brilliance rather than just tactical grinding.

1. The “Michigan” Mastery

Once a rare feat, the lacrosse-style goal (the Michigan) has become a weapon in the 2024-25 season. Seeing a player scoop the puck onto their blade behind the net and tuck it into the top corner in one fluid motion remains the most insane highlight of the year. These goals aren’t just about skill; they represent the daring nature of the modern NHL athlete.

2. End-to-End Solo Efforts

Few things get fans off their seats like a solo rush. This season has featured multiple goals where a defenseman picks up the puck in their own zone, dekes through three opponents, and finishes with a backhand roof shot. These highlights demonstrate the incredible skating ability required to compete at this level.

3. The One-Timer Revolution

Power plays have become more lethal in 2024-25. We have witnessed 160 km/h one-timers that are past the goaltender before the crowd can even gasp. Tracking NHL scores this season shows a significant uptick in power-play efficiency, largely due to these unstoppable shots from the “Ovechkin spot” or the high slot.

Keeping Up with NHL Scores in India

For fans in India, keeping up with the best hockey highlights can be a challenge due to time zone differences. Most games occur during the early morning hours in India (IST). However, digital platforms and official NHL recaps have made it easier than ever to catch up on every highlight-reel goal and final score before you start your workday.

2024-25 Season Stat Leaders (Mid-Season Trends)

  • Top Goal Scorer: Emerging as a race between the league’s elite snipers.
  • Most Assists: Playmakers are dominating the puck possession game.
  • Highest Team Scoring: Offense-heavy teams are currently leading the standings.

Conclusion

The 2024-25 NHL season is redefining what is possible on the ice. Whether it is a puck flicked from mid-air or a tactical masterclass leading to a team goal, the highlights this year have been truly insane. As the league heads toward the playoffs, the intensity will only increase. For Indian fans, there has never been a better time to follow the sport, track the hockey scores, and witness history in the making.
