Newcastle United will not pay
It seemed as if the 27-year-old was set to play for Barcelona this summer, but a few tough months have put an end to that idea for the time being. Staying at Inter Milan this summer is the most solid possibility.
Barcelona had tried to broker a deal but only offered €40–45m plus bonuses. Inter Milan are asking for €60-70 million but want the defender to specifically ask to leave to accept it.
Therefore, attention has turned to other possible options. Newcastle United are one of those teams who are 'always on the lookout'. But they never really looked ready to present a suitable offer to Inter.
In other words, they like the defender, but have no desire to pay the €60-70m that Inter apparently want for him. Therefore, going to St. James Park does not seem likely at the moment.
There is a possibility of difference
For now, staying at Inter seems to be the most likely outcome. He has a deal with the Italian side until 2028, which means something needs to be done on that front.
Inter would not want the defender to complete this season and enter the final year of his deal next summer. This is a risky practice for a player they value so much.
However, if they cannot secure a new deal, this summer is the ideal time to sell. The point is that his valuation is currently discouraging to any contender. Newcastle United fall into that category. They like the defender, and would love to sign him, but not at the currently quoted figures.
