Sunderland Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza has been named among clubs to keep an eye on after his impressive performances at the World Cup. However, the Black Cats look to be somewhat behind the major contenders at this stage.
Greek Outlet sportdog According to the report, interest in the 22-year-old is increasing after Paraguay reached the last 16. They will face France after eliminating Germany on penalties.
According to the report, Sunderland is one of several European clubs who have shown interest in Galarza. Olympiacos, Getafe, Monza and Strasbourg have also been mentioned.
But based on information received from agent circles in Buenos Aires, the Greek side and La Liga club are said to be the strongest contenders.
World Cup changed the transfer picture
Matias Galarza's stock has risen sharply over the past two weeks. After starting the tournament on the bench against the United States, he forced his way into Paraguay's starting eleven. Since then, he has become one of their standout artists.
He scored the winner against Türkiye in the group stage, before providing an assist in the dramatic last-32 victory over Germany. He also converted a penalty in the shootout after playing all 120 minutes.
His versatility has also come to the fore. Galarza has operated as both a central midfielder and on the left side of midfield during Paraguay's World Cup campaign.
Ahead of the tournament, River Plate were reportedly prepared to listen to offers in the region of €4.5m-5m (£3.9m-4.3m). They had also considered using him as part of potential swap discussions with Real Betis involving other transfer targets.
Sunderland may now face a higher asking price
Those plans appear to have changed. Sportdog claims River is now expected to increase his valuation following Galarza's performances. Meanwhile, clubs in Europe, Brazil and MLS are monitoring his situation. The player himself is said to favor leaving Argentina for Europe.
For Sunderland, this should be treated with caution. The report cites information emerging from the Buenos Aires agent market rather than direct club sources. Furthermore, there is no suggestion that the Black Cats have progressed beyond the initial level of interest.
But if interest does develop it would certainly give Sunderland a clear internal reference point. The presence of Omar Alderete on Wearside could help Sunderland make a stronger case for Galarza. This could be important if negotiations ever move beyond the initial stages.
Yet, with Galarza's value almost climbing according to the game, Sunderland will soon have to decide whether to turn that reported interest into something more concrete. They may need to take action before the midfielder becomes too expensive.
