Newcastle United's The move of Ajax youngster Sean Steyer has been a 'godsend' for the Dutch club, with the midfielder achieving sales in the top 15.
The Telegraph reports Today on the 18-year-old's move to St James' Park, explaining how it happened and why Ajax are both celebrating and disappointed.
Newcastle United's offer is irresistible
Sean Steer is on the verge of a 'fantastic' move to Newcastle this summer after personally agreeing terms with the Magpies, the newspaper reports.
Ajax and Newcastle have reached a comprehensive agreement on a transfer fee of €24m plus €3m in easily achievable bonuses. This also includes a 12.5% share of any future transfer fees.
Sport Witness covered reports on the deal earlier today. De Telegraph has now reported that the information comes from 'sources close to the English club'.
The newspaper says the move is surprising as Steyer is a regular for Ajax 1 and is highly rated. They also reached a comprehensive agreement to a new contract under previous technical director Alez Kroos.
However, his father wanted to know how Jordi Cruijff envisioned the midfielder's future. Jordi was unwilling or unable to give any guarantees. This broke the agreement.
magpies swoop down
Sean Steere decided to look elsewhere and Newcastle pounced. The fact that they are willing to pay a total of €27m is a 'godsend' for the Dutch club. This was a sum they were unwilling to turn down this summer given their limited finances.
Steyer is bringing in the same amount that Real Madrid paid for Wesley Sneijder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in 2007 and 2008, and Everton paid for Davy Klaasen in 2017. He is even more valuable than Luis Suarez who moved to Liverpool from Ajax for €26.5m in 2010. His transfer would enter the top 15 most expensive sales in Ajax history,
That's why the Dutch giants are celebrating, even if they are not happy that a player who not long ago was close to signing until 2030 is now going to Newcastle instead.
