The Montreal Canadiens host the Buffalo Sabers on Tuesday night, looking to leave the Bell Center with a 3-1 series lead.

As expected, it was another tight battle, but the Habs only scored on one of the seven power plays given to them, giving the Sabers a 3–2 victory.

Let’s look at the highlights!

Ode to Newfoundland

The Sabers opened the scoring during another poor start from the Habs. Despite the many improvements the Canadiens have made since the start of the rebuild, they have still not been able to win in the first 10 minutes of every game.

The Sabers appeared to have taken a 2–0 lead, but a smart challenge from Martin Saint-Louis was successful, restoring the one-goal lead.

The challenge led to an immediate and noticeable increase in effort from the Canadiens, culminating in a goal from usual suspect Alex Newhook.

It was his sixth goal in the playoffs, and his fifth in only three games.

Newhook is the stick that is sparking Montreal’s offense, there is no doubt about that.

Given that the Sabers decided to run rookie netminder Jacob Dobbs at full speed in Game 4, the Habs took no chances in Game 5, fiercely defending their most valuable player whenever traffic began to pick up.

The Habs are doing a good job guarding Dobbs, especially since the Sabers ran him at full speed in the last game.

After what can only be described as a soft call on Tage Thompson, Canadiens sniper Cole Caufield found the back of the net for the second consecutive game.

It was a powerplay goal, meaning he has yet to score at 5v5, but you can’t look like a gift horse, especially in the playoffs.

Caufield is heating up, and that’s nothing but great news for the Habs.

All things considered, the Habs actually had good luck in the playoffs, but it was the Sabers who benefited from a very fortuitous surge in Game 4.

Tage Thompson’s shot bounced off the seam of the boards, hit Dobbs’ back and landed behind him, tying the game at 2 in the second period.

Penny Drops

Montreal deserves credit for using its speed wisely, but there is clearly something wrong when it comes to the Sabers in the second round.

They’re showing the type of discipline we’ve come to expect from the Canadiens, constantly taking penalties that are not only glaring, but completely pointless.

Fortunately for the Sabres, Montreal mostly failed to take advantage of the many power plays they were given.

While the Canadiens struggled to make the most of their power plays, the Sabers took a 3–2 lead via a goal by Zach Benson on the man advantage.

It was Buffalo’s second power play goal of the game, and a good reminder that special teams go a long way in ensuring playoff success.

To Dobbs’ credit, he played very well, despite the fact that the Habs swept the Sabres.

At 5v5, Buffalo had an 8-3 edge in high-danger chances in the first two periods. Montreal eventually generated a good amount of scoring opportunities of their own, but it was a matter of score impact, and the Sabers attempted to park the bus for much of the half period.

It was all in vain, as the Sabers managed to hold on to their fragile lead long enough to emerge with a 3–2 victory.

The Chicago Cubs have been one of the best teams in baseball this season, entering MLB games today with 27 wins and several double-digit wins. This comes as the club’s pitching staff has been decimated by injuries, but that could change at the MLB trade deadline.

MLB insider Robert Murray named starting pitchers Robbie Ray (San Francisco Giants), Joe Ryan (Minnesota Twins) and Freddy Peralta (New York Mets) among potential Cubs trade targets this summer.

Peralta surfaced in MLB trade rumors last week when Bruce Levin reported that the Cubs had talked to the Mets about a trade for the All-Star pitcher. Although that report has since been retracted, New York has given no indication it is willing to trade Peralta yet.

Chicago still desperately needs starting pitching. While Matthew Boyd (meniscus surgery) may only be sidelined for a month, Cade Horton had season-ending elbow surgery in April and fellow starter Justin Steele now faces an uncertain timeline for his return after recovering from elbow surgery.

Entering the game on May 12, the Cubs’ rotation ranked seventh in ERA (3.77), sixth in WHIP (1.17) and ninth in quality starts (15). However, since April 26, Chicago’s rotation ranks 16th in WHIP (1.26) and 12th in ERA (3.71), depth is becoming a bigger issue.

Evaluating the Cubs’ potential trade targets

Robbie Ray and Freddy Peralta appear to be the most realistic trade targets for Chicago. Both have expiring contracts, reducing the potential acquisition cost for either starter and increasing the likelihood that either San Francisco or New York is willing to make a move.

Ray, who is making $25 million this season, has outperformed Peralta this season. The 6-foot-2 southpaw has recorded a 2.76 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP in 45.2 innings, striking out 26.1 percent of the batters he faced for a .198 batting average.

Peralta, who is owed just $8 million this season, hasn’t been as effective in his first season with New York. While he has a solid 3.12 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP in 43.1 innings, it comes with a career-low 23.2 percent strikeout rate.

Given the Cubs’ infield arrangement, Peralta may be a better option. The 29-year-old righty ranks 36th among starting pitchers in groundball rate (43.7 percent), while Ray is 74th (27.4 percent).

On Monday night, what was supposed to be a pretty good season for the Los Angeles Lakers came to a disappointing end when they were officially eliminated from the playoffs by the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Expectations were always low when top star Luka Doncic suffered a serious hamstring injury just before the postseason began. But the Roosters still showed their ability and courage to reach the semi-finals by defeating the Houston Rockets in the opening round.

Still, roster changes are coming this offseason. NBA legend LeBron James may have played his final game in Los Angeles – and possibly in the league. And DeAndre Ayton will almost certainly opt out of the final year of his deal. While those are notable losses, the Lakers aren’t too far away from being legitimate title contenders in 2026-27. But they still need better rim protection, big-time rebounding and more athletic versatility on defense.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at 10 impact players the LA front office should target this offseason to bolster the roster around young stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

Sign Isaiah Hartenstein

Although his stats don’t jump off the page, Isaiah Hartenstein makes a notable impact wherever he plays. He is a classic dirty work player who will do whatever is necessary to win and that is what the Lakers need. But beyond those attributes, he is a great rebounder – especially on the offensive boards – a smart and tenacious defender and a skilled passer. If LA can get him for the right price in free agency, he will fill a lot of their needs in the front court.

If Andrew Wiggins opts out of the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat (he is expected to), he should be a target for the Lakers. He is a classic 3-and-D player who would be a great fit on this Lakers team. He can guard many wing defenders Doncic or Reaves can’t despite being a legitimate three-point threat – he shot 41% from beyond the arc in 2025-26. Plus, if it doesn’t work out, he’ll be off the books after next season.

One player who will have a lot of interest in free agency this summer is Denver Nuggets swingman Peyton Watson. He had a breakout season in 2025-26 just in time to make the jump to the open market. Posting 14.6 points, nearly five rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game. Although it may be a small thing at just 23 years old, his success is huge.

With two young players at the core of the roster, the Lakers should target other young players to move forward with them. Watson should be at the top of their wish list. However, the major issue is that he is a restricted free agent, and the Nuggets have a chance to match any offer.

If the Cleveland Cavaliers do not reach the Conference Finals this month, Jarrett Allen will definitely be on the trade block, and the Lakers should be first in line for his services. The one-time All-Star brings the rebounding, rim-protection and lob threat Doncic wanted. He’s no star, but he’d be a perfect fit for LA.

Although he is still owed three years and more than $90 million, it will be worth it as he could address major needs this summer.

Trade for Yves Missy and Herb Jones

If the Lakers want to go a more budget-friendly route to address some issues, another option would be to talk to the New Orleans Pelicans on the phone and inquire about the cost of a trade for center Yves Messi and forward Herb Jones.

Neither of them have impressive offensive stats, but they are impressive defenders the Lakers should target this summer. Jones is a top perimeter defender. Missy is an impressive 21-year-old rim protector who can be further developed. This is not a sexy business, but will yield big profits over the course of the season.

Despite averaging 19 minutes and scoring only five points per game, New York Knicks fans can tell you how valuable Mitchell Robinson is. He is a top-notch defender at the center position and rim protector, but his elite offensive rebounding could be the difference between a playoff team and a contender.

Knicks fans will also tell you how hurt the big man is. He would certainly be a risk for the Lakers, but he’s still only 28 years old and that’s exactly what they need in the middle.

Draft Terrence Reed Jr. with the No. 24 pick

The Lakers clearly have options in the free agency and trade market. But the 2026 NBA Draft is deep and has some gems available at the end of the first round and the beginning of the second round. One player who should be on their radar is Connecticut big man Tyrese Reed Jr.

He is a strong rebounder who is adept at tearing down offensive boards. He is an agile athlete on defense, but he also has a solid offensive game after scoring only 20 points per game for the Huskies last season.

Trade up in Round 2 and draft Zubie Ejiofor

If the Lakers are willing to trade up in the second round of the June event, another interesting target would be St. John’s big man Zubie Ejiofor. The Big East Player of the Year is a good rebounder and effective rim protector (he averages more than two per game) at 6 feet 9 inches tall. His offensive performance has also taken off after averaging 16 points per game last season.

As a potential replacement for LeBron James at power forward, Ejiofor could be a sleeper option early in Round 2.

If the Lakers are looking for an affordable risk with a upside this offseason, 10-year veteran Kristaps Porzingis should be on their radar. His bizarre health problems have seriously affected him in the last two seasons. However, his 2023-24 season with the Boston Celtics showed he can make a serious difference on a title contender if healthy.

Although he is not a beast on the boards, he is a rim protector who is a lopsided threat and can stretch the floor. Due to his recent illnesses, he could come cheap this summer.

After months of Minnesota Vikings trade rumors, the front office agreed to send out Jonathan Greenard over draft weekend. While 2024 first-round pick Dallas Turner is set to replace Greenard’s spot in the starting lineup, where he will play opposite Andrew Van Ginkel, the Vikings’ forward depth is undoubtedly thin.

Prior to this, the Vikings had a strong three-man rotation. Behind Turner and Van Ginkel, they have a trio of former undrafted free agents in Bo Richter, Tyler Batty and Chase Chambliss, all unproven players with less than three years of experience. Thus, Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is likely aiming to sign another pass-rusher before the season starts.

leonard floyd

Floyd recorded 19 pressures last year, which was actually the fewest in his eight-year career. He only had 3.5 sacks, the second fewest of his career. So, why would the Vikings want him? While the 33-year-old Floyd is coming off a rough season, even those numbers would be respectable as a rotational edge rusher, especially if Coach Flores thinks there’s a chance Floyd can return to top form in 2024 after recording 8.5 sacks. Plus, Kevin O’Connell and Floyd overlapped for two seasons on the Rams, so he already knows what the veteran will add to the locker room.

AJ Ebenezer

Still only 27 years old, AJ Epenesa may still have some untapped potential hidden in his bones. He has never recorded more than 6.5 sacks in a season, but he has recorded at least 6 sacks in three of his six playing seasons. This is a respectable track record, considering he has only once started more than two games in a season. The Vikings’ coaching staff may feel like they can get the most out of the 6-foot-6-inch, 260-pound defender.

The 37-year-old future Hall of Famer has reached his prime, yet Von Miller is still extremely productive. Last season, he managed to record nine sacks despite starting only three games. Plus, he’s already won the Super Bowl once with Coach O’Connell; Who’s to say they don’t want to pair up and aim for another Lombardi Trophy?

Jadeveon Clowney

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft is somehow still only 33 years old, and he’s become a bit of a journeyman, but still a productive guy. Last year, he recorded 8.5 sacks as a member of the Cowboys, despite only making six starts and appearing in 13 games. Clowney also has a very high floor and a high ceiling, having recorded over 20 pressures in each of the last three seasons.

Last year, Dallas Turner and Jonathan Greenard tied for the Vikings lead with 24 pressures. This is the same pressure that Joey Bosa generated. Bosa is a five-time Pro Bowler who won’t turn 31 until July. Although he hasn’t had a double-digit sack season since 2021, the Vikings don’t need him to be a superstar; They just need someone who can generate pressure on demand, and Bosa certainly fits the bill.

Juraj Slafkowski, who set a new career high with 73 points in 82 games in the regular season, has no points.

This is the type of situation that will sink most teams, especially teams like the Habs who rely on the first line.

However, thanks to key contributions from Zachary Bolduc, Alex Texier and Kirby Dach, among others, the Canadiens are not only moving forward, but they have offered back-to-back dominant performances against the Sabres.

Of course, sticking to 5v5 ignores their powerplay production, with both Caufield and Slafkowski scoring significant powerplay goals in Game 3, which is an indicator that they can eventually take turns at equal strength.

As head coach Martin Saint-Louis explained on Tuesday, powerplay touches can go a long way in restoring a player’s confidence once the man advantage is gone. He was talking about Dach in this particular case, but the logic also applies to Slafkovsky, Demidov, and Caufield.

If I had told you heading into the playoffs that the three players in question would go scoreless for 10 games at 5v5, you probably would have asked me how they could possibly avoid being eliminated in the first round.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, ESPN personality Stephen A. There has been serious internal discussion about Smith coming to WWE.

The report adds to the ongoing conversation about TKO’s impact on WWE programming, with Meltzer stating that those who were critical of Pat McAfee’s involvement in the build-up to WrestleMania 42 are among those favorable to Smith internally.

Since then, he has demonstrated why Kyle Larson and Hendrick Motorsports have so much confidence in him for the long term.

Through 13 races, Day has the fifth-most points (422) in the O’Reilly Series and has been showing great consistency recently. Even including a DNF (37th place) at Texas Motor Speedway, Day has boasted a 9.75 average finishing position in the last 12 races. He scored his first O’Reilly Series win at Talladega and had four top-five finishes along with nine top-10 finishes in that 12-race span. If Hendrick decides to move on from Alex Bowman, Day seems to be the favorite to take the No. 48 car. However, it would not be a surprise if the team waited until 2028 for Day to become a full-time Cup driver.

Caden Honeycutt

Even before winning four races in a single weekend, 22-year-old Caden Honeycutt was viewed as one of the top NASCAR prospects in 2026. He was the obvious choice for Tricon Garage to replace Corey Haim in the No. 11 truck, and the move has paid off. Honeycutt led the Truck Series points even before his first win in the series at Watkins Glen. Through eight races, Honeycutt leads the Truck Series in the top-five (five) and top-10 (six), and among full-time drivers he leads the third-most laps (68). Minimal experience in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series means Honeycutt is two years away from reaching the Cup. However, we may see him get some opportunities in 2027.

Of the top NASCAR prospects in 2026, other than Corey Haim, Jesse Love probably has the best chance to land a full-time Cup Series ride in 2027. A top development driver for Richard Childress Racing, Love is already driving part-time in the No. 33 car. The majority of his time is spent behind the wheel of the No. 2 in the O’Reilly Series, where he has already scored three career wins and currently sits third in points (479) with most top-10s (nine) and most laps led (279). Love will have a chance to become O’Reilly Series champion for the second consecutive year. Whether he can accomplish it or not, Love may have the option of driving full-time for RCR or Legacy Motor Club at Cup level next season at just 22 years old.

gio ruggiero

Gio Ruggiero entered the season ranked 15th by Bob Pockross among the top NASCAR prospects in 2026. It’s fair to say that the 19-year-old has been raising his stock this season. While he finished 15th at Watkins Glen, NASCAR admitted to the No. 17 team that Ruggiero should not have received a penalty for the early restart. The mistake cost him a top-five finish, which would have been his fourth finish in eight races this season.

Even after that mistake made by NASCAR, Ruggiero still has the fourth-most points (257) in the Truck Series and the third-most top-fives. If he can continue at this pace and finish the year in the championship mix, perhaps O’Reilly will have a full-time ride with Joe Gibbs Racing in the Series in 2027. The NASCAR All-Star Race is being held at Dover Motor Speedway this weekend, with the Monster Mile featuring in a non-points race. Unfortunately for racing fans in Delaware, this may be one of their last opportunities to see the Cup Series at the Monster Mile.

On Sunday’s episode of The Teardown, The Athletic’s motorsports reporter Jordan Bianchi shared that there is a “real concern” around the industry that Dover could lose out as a future host for NASCAR races.

“There’s real concern among people about the future of Dover… They’ve lost a race, they’re now stuck in an All-Star race that no one’s interested in… It’s been moved around, it has no place on the schedule. It’s one of those things that just floats around here, there, wherever.”

Dover was effectively dropped from the NASCAR schedule a few months before the season. Reports first surfaced in August that the Monster Mile was being strongly considered to host an All-Star race, marking the first time since 1968 that Dover did not have a points race.

Instead, the track owned by Speedway Motorsports is now mired in a race that the drivers care less about and the fans have even less interest. Making matters worse, the All-Star Race will be held in the early afternoon (1:00 p.m. ET) because the proximity to Dover Air Force Base means that no lights can be used on the track to support night racing.

To make matters worse, Dover itself is not suitable for the All-Star Race, which is a shorter race and does not include the longer races for which the Monster Mile is designed. As a result, there is less excitement for this year’s non-points race than previous All-Star races.

“Most people don’t think it’s going to be very exciting. Dover is a nice track, but I think we both agree that it’s a track built on long, green-flag races and things like that. It’s not conducive to the All-Star Race format. Yes, there are concerns… I’ve heard it’s iffy (ticket sales). It’s not good, it’s worrisome… If you’re worried about Dover, you’re sitting there thinking, How will Dover get back into the points race?

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin spent some time in DC after the season ended. However, the 40-year-old is officially heading back to his native Russia for the summer.

Ovechkin recently completed his 21st season with the Capitals. Now, he will look to make a decision on his future as he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer.

According to Russian news outlet TASS, Ovechkin and his family are scheduled to arrive in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday. The 40-year-old’s wife, Nastya Ovechkina, posted a photo on Instagram of their two sons sitting on top of the luggage.

At media breakdown day, Ovechkin said he was “pretty sure” he had not played his final NHL game. However, their decision will depend on health and family circumstances. The Great 8’s sons, Sergei and Ilya, want him to play another year.

“I tell them, ‘We’ll see.’ They’re excited,” Ovechkin said. “They want me to come back because they love the city, and they love the team, and they love the guys.”

More importantly, Ovechkin hopes the Capitals will compete for another Stanley Cup by his return.

“That’s probably the biggest thing,” Ovechkin said. “Otherwise, if you take different scenarios, like family-wise, health-wise, but also team-wise, that’s the most important thing for me.”

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal has been ruled out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to remove a loose body from his elbow. While this is a major blow to the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner, it appears it won’t get in the way of a record-setting contract.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel spoke with the league’s agents, executives and scouts, who estimated that Skubal would receive a contract worth approximately $357 million over seven years.

Typically, Skubal’s surgery occurs with a recovery timeline of two to three months. This would put the All-Star pitcher on track to return in late July, right after the MLB All-Star break.

However, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, there is “optimism in the Tigers clubhouse” that Skubal will be able to return to the mound in June. In a best-case scenario, some even think the reigning Cy Young Award winner could be a part of Detroit’s rotation by early June.

Dustin Poirier believes Khamzat Chimaev’s status in the middleweight division took a meaningful hit at UFC 328 in Newark on Saturday night, and he believes whoever faces Chimaev next will walk away with less psychological damage than previous opponents.

Speaking on UFC on Paramount+ after the show, Poirier also took direct aim at the post-fight moment between Chimaev and Sean Strickland, suggesting that the reconciliation revealed some uneasiness about the entire buildup.

“In the next fight, no matter who he faces, it will be hard to scare him because his aura has been damaged this week,” Poirier said. “With the back-and-forth, I thought it was real. I think it affected his whole aura this week. And putting the belt on Strickland — like, come on, man. He definitely worked for us.”

Poirier’s point lies in the fact that Chimaev created a unique figure in the sport. The undefeated record was an important part of his mystique, but there was also a sense of danger that surrounded him in preparation for every fight.

The conversation between Strickland and Chimaev before UFC 328 turned into some of the harshest pre-fight trash talk in recent memory, touching on religion, ethnicity, and physical threats, which made the confrontation truly unsettling.

The Minnesota Vikings brought in significant competition for quarterback JJ McCarthy this offseason, with Kyler Murray seen as the likely starter. This raises questions about McCarthy’s future in Minnesota.

Recent reporting has made it clear that the Vikings have no early leader in the quarterback competition. While Murray has a vastly improved resume, Minnesota wants to give McCarthy a legitimate chance to win the starting job.

McCarthy has two things. First, Kevin is already familiar with O’Connell’s system and has chemistry with the Vikings’ receiving corps. Additionally, Minnesota also has a greater investment in him and would prefer an outcome where he becomes the long-term starting quarterback.

Things get more interesting if McCarthy loses the starting quarterback competition. Minnesota also re-signed veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz this offseason.

Wentz performed much better than McCarthy last season, completing 65.1 percent of his passes with a 6-5 TD-INT line, an 85.8 passer rating, and he averaged 7.2 yards per attempt. For comparison, McCarthy completed only 57.6 percent of his passes with an 11-12 TD-INT ratio, a 72.6 QB rating, and he averaged 6.7 yards per attempt.

As Graziano also noted, the Vikings have already paid 70 percent of McCarthy’s rookie contract and their original draft-capital investment in that is never being recouped in a trade.

If McCarthy struggles this summer and in the preseason, Minnesota will likely move Murray as the starter and Wentz as the backup quarterback. In that case, as the third-line passer on the Vikings’ depth chart, McCarthy and his agent could push for a trade to pursue a fresh start with another franchise.

It’s been a tough year for Memphis Grizzlies fans. After a year of struggling to return to the playoffs thanks to a 48-win season, Memphis struggled greatly in head coach Tuomas Lisallo’s first full season with the team, winning only 25 games.

Now, the Grizzlies’ friends and family are dealing with a much more difficult hardship than anyone ever wants to experience.

On Tuesday, Priority Sports Agency revealed that one of their clients, Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, has died at the age of 29. According to the agency, Clark officially died on May 11, 2026.

The cause of Clark’s death has not yet been revealed to the public.

The Oklahoma City Thunder made Clark the 21st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, but his rights were already traded to the Grizzlies in exchange for Darius Bazley and a future second-round pick. Clark spent his entire seven-year career in Memphis, during which he made 50 appearances out of 309.

Clarke had been sidelined since 20 December with a calf injury; He finished his season playing only two games. This was a common theme in recent years, with Clarke’s 2023–24 season ended after just six games due to injury.

The Vancouver, British Columbia native averaged 10.2 ppg and 5.5 rpg while playing 20.8 minutes per game during his NBA career as a member of the Grizzlies.

The San Francisco Giants made the first significant trade of the 2026 MLB season, dealing Gold Glove Award winner Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Browns. In a season where a lot has already gone wrong, it appears there may be other steps to take.

USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale reported that the Giants “would love to unload” first baseman Rafael Devers, third baseman Matt Chapman, shortstop Willie Adams and outfielder Jung Hoo Lee. This will be part of a “reboot” and redraft effort ahead of the 2026 MLB Draft.

According to FanGraphs’ payroll tracking, the Giants have the 11th-highest payroll in MLB at $230 million. Despite investing over $200 million in the roster, San Francisco has the third-worst record in the National League (17–24) and the worst run differential in MLB (-42) through 41 games.

Will the Giants become sellers at the MLB trade deadline?

If the Giants are going to make another move a few months before the MLB trade deadline, a likely candidate to be dealt would be starting pitcher Robbie Ray. His contract is expiring and it appears he will hit MLB free agency. Dealing him would also save money, as more than half of his $25 million salary is still due this season.

After that, things become more suspicious. Adams is under contract through 2031, his age-35 season, with an average annual value of $26 million. Given his defensive limitations and only a .223/.304/.405 triple-slash line over his last 200 games, there will be a very thin market for him and San Francisco will need to cover a significant portion of the remainder.

Trading Devers would at least open up first base for top prospect Bryce Aldridge and create a more viable path for Casey Schmidt to get an at-bat in every game. However, since being traded to San Francisco he has compiled only a .237/.330/.438 triple-slash line.

Chapman, meanwhile, is under contract through 2030, when he will make $25.166 million per year as a 37-year-old third baseman. Lee, who has a .692 OPS this season, is owed $22 million annually over the next two seasons and then has a player option for 2028.

In all likelihood, San Francisco won’t have much luck trading Devers, Lee, Adams or Chapman, and a deal is also unlikely as all four hitters are struggling at the plate. If the team continues to struggle, Ray, starting pitcher Tyler Mahle and outfielder Harrison Bader are potential trade candidates.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been a juggernaut for several years now. They have won consecutive World Series titles and are in the running for their third title. They will be the first National League team in history to do so. This is largely due to a roster that doesn’t have too many weak links. Sure, the bullpen isn’t always spectacular, but it’s often pretty solid. Yet one area has remained a point of concern in recent years: the outfield.

That doesn’t mean their outfield is bad – far from it. The Dodgers solved most of their problems this offseason by signing top free agent Kyle Tucker. This was a huge achievement which led to a significant improvement in their outfield group. But there isn’t much certainty behind Tucker and up-and-comer Andy Paige.

Sure, Teoscar Hernandez may slip from time to time, but his age is starting to show. Behind him are unproven commodities like Alex Call and Hyesong Kim, both of whom have struggled to produce consistently at the big league level.

Enter Alec Thomas. The 26-year-old center fielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks was recently designated for assignment to make room for top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt. He has made a good start and now looks like he could permanently replace Thomas in the outfield.

On Tuesday morning, the Dodgers traded for Alec Thomas, reducing the possibility of Jose Requena to Arizona. In the same move, the Dodgers DFA optioned outfielder Michael Siani to make room for Thomas on the 40-man roster. Requena was signed by Los Angeles in last year’s international signing class. He has not yet made his professional debut.

This is a move that immediately improves the Dodgers’ outfield depth in several ways. For one, Thomas is in control of the club until 2028. That means Los Angeles can keep him at a relatively low price over the next two and a half years. Thomas has shown signs of an offensive breakout. In 2025, he posted a career-high .249/.289/.370 slash line with a respectable .659 OPS. Those numbers were much better than his usual numbers, indicating a step forward in 2026. But this has not happened. Instead, Thomas is off to the worst start of his career, batting .181 in 28 games this season. He will serve as depth in Triple-A for the Dodgers. Behind Andy Paige, Los Angeles lacked a true backup option in center field. Thomas could fill that role if anything happens with Paige.

First, he was late to the start of the 2024 season because he was holding out for a new long-term contract. He got it, but then he tore his ACL seven games into that campaign. Yet, instead of taking the field last season, Aiyuk sat out the entire 2025 season due to ongoing differences with the organization. That made divorce a guarantee this offseason.

However, rather than trade the talented but problematic receiver and move on, general manager John Lynch is under the impression that if he is patient, he will find a team that would be willing to give Aiyuk something rather than lose him for nothing. Well, it looks like that’s not going to happen, and according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Lynch just needs to pull the trigger on his release.

Graziano says the 49ers may choose to wait a few more months and hope a team becomes desperate. But considering the financial cost and draft pick value, no team is going to waste any money on a deal when they can get him for a much lower price with a little patience.
