Why Bruce Cassidy isn’t suiting up for the Devils – and why Keefe might stay

Will the New Jersey Devils need a new head coach at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season? A shocking firing this weekend has now made the head coach a hot name on the free agency market, one that could certainly tempt general manager Tom Fitzgerald.

The Vegas Golden Knights fired Bruce Cassidy on Sunday despite the team’s playoff position and his longtime success with the organization. In a shocking turn of events he is replaced by John Tortorella.

In his Vegas tenure, Cassidy has boasted an incredible 178–99–43 record (fifth most in that span), 24 playoff wins (fourth most), two Pacific Division titles and one Stanley Cup.

It’s easy to see why Cassidy might only be unemployed for a short period of time.

However, the season is not over, and the Devils still employ Sheldon Keefe.

How long will this continue? It’s really anyone’s guess, but Fitzgerald revealed at the height of the New Jersey clashes in January that he and Keef are “in lockstep,” and despite fan opinion, there’s no reason to believe Fitzgerald’s in the hot seat.

Still, in a situation where the Devils decide to move on from Keefe, is Cassidy the Devils’ best option?

On the surface, his Vegas resume is certainly attractive. However, zooming the lens a little more may prove otherwise.

In Vegas, Cassidy relied on an elite defensive blueline and strong goaltending en route to winning the Stanley Cup. They didn’t have a lot of elite talent other than Jack Eichel and 60% Mark Stone.

Add in the fact that Cassidy’s style runs counter to New Jersey’s strengths, you can imagine the Devils could look similar for the majority of 2025-26.

Cassidy’s system is generally simple. Chip pucks behind the defense, win puck battles, and try for goals. The defense, meanwhile, relies on goaltending to outscore the opposition – although that has been a struggle for Vegas this season.

However, the Devils are a high speed and skill team that thrives on hustle.

Just look at how the Devils have performed this season. In the first 17 games when Jack Hughes was healthy, New Jersey compiled a 12–4–1 record and played a more open style. After Jack’s injury in November, the system took off on itself, becoming less about speed and skill and more about defensive structure. Like Vegas, New Jersey’s goaltending—particularly Jacob Markstrom—did not hold up.

Still, after the Olympic break, the Devils’ system has reopened. This was due to Jack’s return to form as his arm is back to 100%. Keefe also noted after Sunday’s 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks that Luke Hughes’ improved play in the latter half of the year is another obvious factor.

“Since coming back from the Olympic break, we’ve been focusing a lot on our game on sprinting and things like that,” Keefe said. “I looked at it the other day and one of the things that drives the game in the crowd is the controlled entries and the momentum coming from the neutral zone. Jack leads our team by a country mile on individual entries since the Olympic break, and indeed that will be the case throughout the season. But Jack is also perfect in assisting others in moving the game from the crowd and controlled entries.

“Luke is there too. [Jack] And Luke is on another level than everyone else. That’s a statistical way of looking at it. What those guys can bring in terms of getting our offense moving, and when we get both of them healthy and feeling good, we look pretty much like we are, OK, there’s a lot of focus on how we’ve improved offensively here over these 16 games. Go back and look at the previous 17 games when Jack got hurt, and it looks pretty much the same.”

Hiring Cassidy would continue the move away from who the Devils are. In fact, credit goes to Keefe where it’s due. He has brought them back to that style of play.

Maybe it’s too late, but they’re at it again, and it’s clearly working with 10 wins in their last 14 games.

So, will Cassidy be an upgrade behind the bench in New Jersey? Maybe on paper. However, it’s very possible that Keefe is doing enough to save his job at the end of the season.

After all, he’s not wrong when he says that when we look at the Devils’ performance before Jack’s injury in November and after the Olympic break. Everything in between was injury-related chaos that may not impact Keefe.

We’ll see what the offseason brings, but proceed with caution with Cassidy. In fact, don’t be surprised if the current Devils regime gets its last blow in 2026-27.

Forever Blueshirts: This isn’t New York Rangers related, but Jim Cerny always makes the connection. Former Blueshirts bench boss John Tortorella got a job that shocked the world. He is now the head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights, who immediately fired Bruce Cassidy on Sunday.

Despite strong first period, Devils fall to Carolina Hurricanes again

For 20 minutes, the New Jersey Devils looked like a red-hot team capable of competing with any opponent in the NHL.

Nevertheless, in a result that seemed very familiar to Devils fans, the Carolina Hurricanes came back strongly with five consecutive goals in their 5–2 victory, which snapped the Devils’ two-game winning streak.

Evgeni Dadonov and Timo Meier each scored, the second of which came from Dawson Mercer in his 400th consecutive game. Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves in the loss.

Carolina scored three times in the second period, led by former Devils forward Taylor Hall, who had two assists. Nikolaj Ehlers also had a goal and an assist.

The Hurricanes won their 12th consecutive home game against the Devils, adding six Stanley Cup playoff wins over the past four seasons.

“I think this group needs to heal some wounds along the way,” Devils forward Connor Brown said after the game. “As soon as you let one in and get one on their heels, that’s where their system takes over. That’s the type of game they hunt.”

Devils had a strong performance in the first round in Carolina.

The Devils couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game.

They kept the shot count close throughout the frame and played the proverbial solid road game. Markstrom made eight saves, and they were mostly from outside, as the Devils gave up just 0.62 expected goals and two high-danger chances.

Despite two failed power plays in the first period, New Jersey also finished first on the board. Captain Nico Hischier hit Mercer with a 100-foot stretch pass and Mercer beat Carolina defenseman Sean Walker and found Meyer for a tap-in goal.

It was Meyer’s 22nd goal of the season. He has scored in three consecutive games and has five in New Jersey’s last seven games. Meyer now has eight goals in 15 games since the Olympic break ended.

Satan came unmasked in the second period

Failing to handle the Hurricanes’ surge has been a hallmark of the Devils’ struggles in Carolina, and Saturday was no different.

Carolina outscored the Devils 15–5 in the second period, and had a 32–13 shot-attempt advantage in the middle frame. Yet, according to Devils coach Sheldon Keefe, the whole thing backfired when Lenny Haminaho took the team’s only penalty of the game, a minor tripping at 8:27 of the second.

“We were definitely right there in the game,” Keefe said. “Up until the penalty take, I liked our second period. We didn’t get a lot of shots on net, but we were in our half of the ice. We just didn’t have the stamina or energy to keep up with it.”

Ehlers tied the score by beating Markstrom from the right circle on the power play, capping a typical passing play. Then Carolina’s rush got busy, energizing the Hurricanes’ offensive anticipation and forcing the Devils into mistakes.

“There’s no doubt that our bench sagged a little bit after we scored the first goal,” Keefe said. “It’s more than just the opponent. You know how hard it is to score. You’ve got the lead, you’ve given them life. The crowd just comes alive. It’s everything.”

Shane Gostisbier’s aggressive puck at the offensive blue line forced a turnover, creating a two-on-one situation for Jackson Blake and Logan Stankoven, and Blake got past Jonas Seigenthaler and beat Markstrom, giving Carolina the lead at 13:48.

“Punting against this team is exactly what they want,” Keefe said. “They drop it in the neutral zone, they come straight at you and it’s wave after wave. We’ve got to make a play. We’ve got to get it off the boards against these guys.

Jordan Staal scored just 95 seconds later, redirecting Ehlers’ shot after Simon Nemec’s soft back-handed clearing attempt, giving Carolina a 3–1 lead and effectively putting the game on ice.

“We had time to make a play and we panicked and threw it against the wall and that gave them an opportunity,” Keefe said. “Those are two big plays that end up on net.”

Lines, Notes and How to See Versus Devils

There are only ten games left for the Carolina Hurricanes in the regular season as they face the New Jersey Devils to begin the first half of a back-to-back home set on Saturday evening.

The game is scheduled for 5:00 pm EDT.

In the Hurricanes’ last game, they faced a goaltender in Jacob Dobbs of the Montreal Canadiens. Despite maintaining pressure and creating nearly 30 quality scoring chances on 44 shots on goal, the Hurricanes were only able to score two goals, and they lost 5–2. It was the most single-game saves by Dobbs in his NHL career. You can read the full analysis on that whole fiasco here.

Meanwhile, the Devils will come to Carolina riding a two-game winning streak. This will be their fourth and final clash with the Hurricanes this season, a series in which the Hurricanes have won all three so far, including a natural hat-trick from Andrei Svechnikov.

Shayne Gostisbier returns to practice, could play against Devils

There were plenty of scenes for sore eyes as everyone from the Carolina Hurricanes, regardless of injury, gathered at Lenovo Center for their annual picture day. However, it was the optimistic developments in practice that attracted the most attention on Friday.

Shayne Gostisbehere returned to full practice, skipping the non-contact gear and going straight to standard. Back in business, he claimed his usual spot alongside Alexander Nikishin and ran drills in his typical role on the power play.

Head coach Rod Brind’Amour was asked if he was confident he would participate in Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils, the first of a weekend back-to-back set.

“Hopefully,” he said. “I’ll find out tomorrow. I can’t commit right now, because I don’t know…Nowadays, with injuries, I just wait until they say they’re ready to go.”

Gostisbehere was injured in a March 6 game against the Edmonton Oilers during the Hurricanes’ final Western Conference road trip of the year. After delivering a hit to Colton Dach, the Oilers forward’s skate came up during his fall and struck Gostisbeer in the groin.

While he initially went down the tunnel, Gostisbeer returned for two more shifts – one in which he scored on the power play – then officially left.

Gostisbehere has missed 26 games this season.

Devils come back late to beat Predators 4-2

Despite letting a two-goal lead slip away early, the New Jersey Devils battled adversity to defeat the Nashville Predators 4-2 on Thursday night.

The Devils initially opened the scoring with goals awarded to Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt, but were later credited with the goals again to Bratt (for the first goal) and Nico Hischier, respectively.

The Predators bounced back in the second period with goals from Reed Schaefer and Steven Stamkos.

Hischier added another run late in the third period, a deflection off a shot from Hughes restoring New Jersey’s lead. Timo Meyer converted an empty netter in the last minute of the game to seal the victory.

Jacob Markstrom started in goal for New Jersey after consecutive games sitting on the bench behind Jake Allen. With the win, Markstrom moved to 22–16–1 on the year.

Justus Anunen played between the pipes, going 8-10-2 on the year in the loss.

Arseniy Gritsyuk was out of the lineup for the Devils after suffering an injury at the end of their previous game against the Dallas Stars. Evgeny Dadonov took his place on New Jersey’s third line.

first period

The Devils came out of the gate outscoring the Predators 4–0 in the first five minutes of the game.

Enunen held strong in the early parts of the game and Nashville took the lead late in the contest. However, Markstrom and the Devils were able to hold off the attacks through the middle and end of the period.

That defensive resilience opened the door for New Jersey to take the lead before the end of the opening frame.

The Connor Brown-Hughes-Bratt line continued to be productive, Hughes fired a shot which Bratt deflected past Anunen for his 19th goal of the campaign. The first goal was scored in 1:58 minutes.

After 20 minutes the Devils led 1-0 and had a 9-6 advantage in shots.

second period

Once again, the Devils dominated the first few minutes of the period and outscored the Predators 6–1 over the opening 5:30.

The Devils used that momentum to double the lead at the 10:47 mark, with Hischier tipping a sharp-angle shot by Bratt into the top shelf.

However, that two-goal lead was short-lived, as the Predators responded by immediately scoring two goals in the next four minutes.

In the first, Nashville took advantage of a poor turnover by the Devils defense, allowing Schaefer to solo on Markstrom to cut the lead in half with 8:51 to go in the second.

Just 1:51 later, veteran Stamkos converted on back-to-back defensive zone giveaways from Simon Nemec and Hughes, tying the game just before the end of the period.

After 40 minutes, the Predators had tied the Devils 2–2, despite trailing 10–6 in the second frame and 19–12 after two.

third period

The third period was much more even than the previous two, with the Predators and Devils trading chances in the first ten minutes.

Nashville picked up its first and only power play of the game 3:27 into the period, but the best chance with the man-advantage went to Hischier, who could not find a way past Annunen on a rush chance.

However, the successful kill gave the Devils a second wind, tilting the ice back in their favor. Nashville took two penalties later in the third and New Jersey’s pressure finally increased.

Hischier scored his second goal of the night and 26th of the season, on a Hughes shot on the power play with 5:53 minutes left.

The Devils defense closed things out late with a 3–2 lead, limiting the Predators to just two shots in the final five minutes of the game.

Meyer put away the game with an empty net goal in the final 33 seconds, scoring his 21st goal of the season to give New Jersey a 4–2 victory.

The Devils battled adversity late in the second period and ultimately earned their fifth win in six games. Not only that, but star center Hughes extended his point streak to seven games with two assists, bringing his total points in that span to 14.

New Jersey will conclude its road trip on Saturday night when it faces division rival, the Carolina Hurricanes.

With 76 points and 11 games to play, the Devils will need a miracle to reach the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. But if they keep scoring points like this, they might be able to stay in the race for a little while longer.

The Devils are ten points behind the Ottawa Senators for the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.

Devil’s Superstar Dirty Finish; maple leaf similarities

So, last night was an encouraging win for the New Jersey Devils, right?

This isn’t me saying, “Maybe they’ll make the playoffs!” They won’t.

But, the style of play that New Jersey showed last night – more open ice and a little more loose play – clearly showed that this team has the ability to compete. It will just have to happen next year. And with the right change.

And, of course, it all depends on Jack Hughes. Below is more about him and New Jersey’s impressive win.

Elsewhere, Jason Robertson’s next contract, ex-Blueshirts coach on NYR clash, more.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Well, who saw this coming? The Dallas Stars are a bit of a bummer. However, it is still impressive that the Devils stunned them, scoring four first period goals to give Dallas a 6–4 victory. Jack Hughes, man. The Devils really are as good as they’ve been with a record of 8-3-0 in their last 11 games.

Speaking of shocking, this goal by Jake on Team USA teammate Jake Oettinger is downright nasty:

Devils hold off Stars for 6-4 win

Despite being on the verge of missing out on the playoffs, the New Jersey Devils defeated the surging Dallas Stars 6-4 on Tuesday night at the American Airlines Center.

The Devils did all their damage in the first period, scoring four goals in the first 17 minutes and 19 seconds of the game.

The Stars, who clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs over the weekend, made a serious effort to tie the game throughout, making the score 4–3 in the second period and 5–4 in the third. However, New Jersey was able to hold off the bombing, maintain its lead late, and walk away from Dallas with two points.

Jack Hughes continued his strong form, opening the scoring and adding another score before the end of the first period to extend his point streak to six. He scored five goals and 12 points in that span.

Jasper Bratt and Connor Brown also scored first for the Devils, scoring their 18th and 19th goals of the season respectively. Timo Meier reached the 20-goal mark in the third period, a much-needed insurance goal that later turned out to be decisive.

Dougie Hamilton, who was skating his 900th career NHL game, made a full-ice empty netter to make the score 6–4 in the final minute of the game.

The Stars’ dynamic duo of Wyatt Johnson and Jason Robertson kept Dallas in the game during the first two periods. Johnson scored twice in the first two frames for a total of 40 goals on the year, while Robertson tallied 39 in the second period.

Maverick Bourque scored in the third period to cut the Devils’ lead to one, but the Stars were unable to complete the comeback.

Jake Oettinger got the start for Dallas but was subbed off after 20 minutes. Casey DeSmith pitched in relief and made 15 saves on 16 shots in the second and third periods. Oettinger was credited with the loss, moving to 29–11–6 on the season.

Jake Allen got the nod from Sheldon Keefe on the opposite end, his second consecutive start, following New Jersey’s close 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Friday. With the win, Allen moved to 13–16–1 on the season.

first period

The game started with the Stars being on the front foot, dictating the pace of the game and having four shots on goal before the Devils fired one.

However, that didn’t stop the Devils from drawing first blood, as Hughes scored his first of the night on a nifty power move with New Jersey’s first shot of the game.

The early lead was eventually extinguished just four minutes later by Johnson, who scored his first of the night with a wide-open shot from between the hashmarks during a brief 4-on-4 period.

However, before the 4-on-4 timeout ended, the Devils regained the lead via another solo try, this time by Bratt at 10:49.

New Jersey continued to advance in the first round, getting more goals from its efficient second line of Bratt–Hughes–Brown. Brown found the net at 7:08 and Hughes missed a chance to score with 2:41 minutes remaining.

All four of New Jersey’s goals came from the same line, and all four came in transition moments.

The Devils led 4–1 after 20 minutes and defeated the Stars 8–6.

second period

DeSmith led the Stars out of the locker room for the second period and took over between the pipes for Glenn Gulutzan.

DeSmith excelled in the second period, stopping all nine shots he faced, helping the Stars get back into the game.

Dallas’ 29.1% effective power play started working early in the frame when Lenny Haminaho was whistled for traveling on Bourque in the opening minute of the second.

It was clear why the Stars have the second-best power play in the league, as Johnson scored his second goal of the game just 11 seconds in on the man-advantage.

To make matters worse for the Devils, as the second period ended, the Stars began to take over the game.

After a long period of possession in the offensive zone, Robertson scored from an acute angle with 7:29 minutes remaining, increasing the Devils’ lead to 4–3.

As DeSmith continued to thwart every puck that came his way, Allen had to be just as strong in the final minutes of the second, despite not facing as much rubber.

The Devils narrowly escaped with a one-goal lead in the second period, a margin that has proven vital to their success throughout the season.

Despite scoring twice and creating some serious chances during the period, the Stars were outscored by the Devils 9–7 in the second and 17–13 in 40 minutes.

third period

Sensing a change in momentum, the Stars came out in full flight to start the third period.

They outscored the Devils 6-0 in the first three minutes of the period and would have found the equalizer if not for some clutch saves from Allen.

Just when it looked like the Stars were going to tie things up, the Devils got a needed insurance goal from Meyer at 13:14, a glove-side snipe from an almost impossible angle. Nico Hischier and Dawson Mercer were credited with assists.

The siege continued from the Stars, who pounded Allen with a total of 14 shots in the final frame.

Ultimately, Bourque broke through with a tip-in to tie the game at 5–4 with 6:52 left in regulation. The goal came with another increase in pressure from Dallas’ special teams and came as Hamilton’s penalty expired.

The Stars put more pressure on the Devils, who were barely able to weather the storm.

New Jersey did not actually record a shot for 7:16 straight at the end of the third period. That is, until 1:00 when Hamilton clinched the win with an empty netter from New Jersey’s end of the ice.

The 2025-26 New Jersey Devils may be embarrassingly worse than the sum of their parts and certainly won’t make the playoffs in April, but they’re still perfect when leading after two periods. With the win, they improved their record in that scenario to 22–0–0.

Not only this, but this is New Jersey’s fourth win in the last five games. A rare and welcome form going into the final stages of the season.

Next, they’ll head to Nashville on Thursday for another road game against the potentially postseason-bound Predators.

Thompson stands tall as Caps beat Devils

The Washington Capitals (35-27-8) have now won two in a row. They didn’t need much scoring to get the job done as they defeated the New Jersey Devils (35-32-2) 2-1 on Friday night.

The game was a goaltending duel between Logan Thompson and Jake Allen. In the end, Thompson was victorious.

The Olympic silver medalist made 30 saves on 31 shots. Thompson nearly recorded a shutout, but still recorded his 23rd win in the end.

“I don’t really care about it,” Thompson said of not getting the shutout. “They won’t remember me for the shutout. That wasn’t on my mind. I just wanted to win.”

Ryan Leonard and Aliaksi Protas scored two goals each for the Capitals on the night. Cole Hutson also contributed in his second NHL game.

The Capitals have kept their playoff hopes alive with seven extra points from four matches. However, if they are to be able to do so they will have to win and get some help.

Next, the Capitals conclude their four-game homestand with a Sunday matinee matchup against Colorado.

capitals analysis

Capitals were looking very strong in the initial stages. Leonard and Hutson were two skaters who made a difference.

As soon as he got the puck, Leonard came off the bench and made a sharp shot on Allen to make the score 1-0. The 21-year-old now has goals in five of his last eight games.

Additionally, Leonard made history as the first Capitals rookie since Alex Ovechkin to reach the 15-goal mark.

Hutson made his second NHL start and has continued to make his presence felt. The 19-year-old created many chances and was solid defensively. She even had a physical relationship with Olympic gold medalist Jack Hughes.

Ultimately, the Capitals’ MVP on Friday night was Thompson. The 29-year-old made several key saves, including on the front door and with his glove.

Allen also came out for New Jersey and made 26 saves against the Capitals’ offense. However, after leaving the ice, Aliaksi Protas recorded an empty-netter to make it 2–0.

Thompson’s shutout effort ended when Jesper Bratt scored with less than a minute remaining. Nonetheless, the Capitals netminder stepped up with 18 saves in the final period.

capitals report card

Team: B

The Capitals were stronger defensively than offensively on Friday night. However, they did enough to win their second consecutive game.

Logan Thompson: A+

Thompson was the true MVP that night with 30 saves. The 29-year-old now has 23 wins on the season.

Ryan Leonard: A

Leonard recorded the game-winning goal in the opening period. The 21-year-old is now the first Capitals rookie since Alex Ovechkin to score 15 goals.

Cole Hutson: A

Hutson created many chances and was strong defensively. The newbie continues to show poise and confidence.

Hughes sets Devils record; Matthews to Minnesota?

Jack Hughes did enough to re-establish himself as a New Jersey Devils loyalist by performing in the Olympics. Then he scored the golden goal. And amid his wild success last month, when he returned, he expressed his devotion to the Devils, which certainly put everyone’s minds at ease considering the Quinn Hughes debacle earlier this year.

Now, Michael Russo explains how the Minnesota Wild GM is preparing for his next big change. Could it be Auston Matthews? More on that below, but if that’s the case, Devils fans no longer have to worry about Jack being ready to play alongside Quinn for Minnesota, if that happens.

Additionally, Hughes set a new record in New Jersey.

Elsewhere, there’s Evgeni Malkin’s contract update, Artemi Panarin’s Broadway return, and the Hockey World Cup’s three host cities.

Devil’s Trade Rumors and News

athletic ($): It’s amazing to me that the United States has won Olympic gold medals in all three of men’s, women’s, and Paralympic sledge hockey, and yet, the World Cup of Hockey will be held exclusively outside the US. In 2028, the NHL announced yesterday that the host cities will be Calgary, Edmonton and Prague.

More confirmed ($): Perhaps Devils fans will feel relieved if this happens. Could Minnesota Wild GM Bill Geering pursue Auston Matthews this summer? It appears Guerin is preparing for his next superstar swing, and something has to give in Toronto. Of course, that would put Jack Hughes out of the Wild’s reach, and Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has no desire to move their franchise face in any way. More from Michael Russo.

pittsburgh hockey now: Evgeni Malkin doesn’t seem concerned at all about a potential next contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. here’s why.

Forever Blueshirts: In his return to Madison Square Garden to face the New York Rangers, Artemi Panarin provided an assist in the Los Angeles Kings’ 4–1 win.

Jack Hughes Sets Devils Record in Thriller OT Win vs. Bruins

Paul Couture is the New Jersey Devils’ best player and they have a goaltender across from them.

Hosting the Boston Bruins at the Prudential Center, Cotter scored the overtime winner, which also capped a three assist night for Jack Hughes, a new record holder for the Devils.

Just four minutes into the first period, the Devils’ defense was caught sleeping and the Bruins made them pay.

Henri Jokiharju’s shot from the point was blocked by Jacob Markstrom. However, the puck bounced off David Pastrnak, who was standing at the net-front the entire time, collected the loose puck, and slid it between Markstrom’s five-hole to give the Bruins a 1–0 lead.

The Bruins dominated the puck throughout the first period. About four minutes after the Bruins’ goal, Brandon Dillon and Mark Kastelic dropped mitts after New Jersey created tension in front of the net. Each got five minutes of majors to fight.

Boston kept the pressure on New Jersey, and eventually doubled their lead when Pavel Zacha finished off a stray chance headed by Viktor Arvidsson to make the game 2–0.

The Devils got off to a fast start in the second period and scored within the first minute of puck drop. Jack forced a turnover on neutral territory and began moving toward the Boston area. The Devils star fed Connor Brown, who was already behind the Boughton defense, provoking him for a breakaway, and he lowered the blocker side to cut the Devils’ deficit to 2–1.

Jack’s primary assist set a Devils franchise record, as he is now the fastest player to reach 400 points for New Jersey, reaching the milestone in 414 games.

The Devils remained all-out in the middle frame as they tried to erase their first period deficit. New Jersey’s top line continued to give the Bruins defense headaches. With just over eight minutes gone in the period, the Jacks made a quick move up the ice, feeding Brown in the middle of the ice, who then passed the puck to Jesper Bratt for a one-time chance in the right circle to tie the game at 2–2.

Just three minutes into the third period the Devils immediately took a 3-2 lead. Maxim Tsyplyakov drove to the net with the puck on his backhand, and fired it into the slot for Paul Cotter who scored.

Still, Pastrnak responded immediately by pulling off a slick toe-up of his own, and slid the puck to Markstrom, who the Bruins forward knocked out of position to restore the tie at three.

There was a barrage of penalties between the Devils and Bruins, starting with Kastelic’s hard hit on Cotter. Bruins forward Johnathan Kovacevic stepped up to drop the gloves, forcing Kastelic to fight for the second time on Monday.

New Jersey then committed three minor penalties, and Boston was whistled for one. Still, neither team took advantage.

The Devils and Bruins needed overtime, and the exciting period almost turned into a shootout.

However, Jack collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and pushed it to Cotter, drawing a streak across the ice. On a breakaway, Cotter scored the overtime winner to solidify the Devils’ second win in as many games.

Markstrom stopped 19 pucks on 22 shots to earn his 20th win of the season.

Devils coach candidate; More Blues Trade Talk

The New Jersey Devils will have to go through the remainder of the 2025–26 season. However, I think it’s time to start thinking about who will be in charge behind the bench.

Hughes’ late heroics spoil Kopitar’s night in Devils win vs. Kings

Well, the New Jersey Devils may have given up three leads, but they still came up with two points.

A back-and-forth affair between the Devils and the Los Angeles Kings ended in victory when Jack Hughes sealed the deal with the game-winning power play goal in the third period.

The Devils took a 1–0 lead on a goal off the stick of Cody Glass at 7:58 of the first period.

Arseniy Gritsyuk collected the loose puck on the right wall and fed the glass into the slot for a one-time chance, beating Anton Forsberg to give New Jersey a one-goal advantage.

Three minutes later, Nico Hischier scored on a rebound by Timo Meier to give the Devils a 2–0 lead in the first period.

New Jersey began the second period of attack. However, Dougie Hamilton sent the Devils to the early penalty kill after being whistled for interference.

On the Los Angeles power play, Anze Kopitar cut the Devils’ lead to 2–1 by hitting a backdoor pass from Bradent Clark.

Just over two minutes later, Artemi Panarin tied the game, skating the puck into the slot and passing it past Jake Allen to tie things at two.

The Kings scored three consecutive goals to take the lead at 11:43 of the middle frame. Clark walked to the Devils blueline with the puck on his stick and passed it to Taylor Ward at the top of the left circle, who beat Allen to give the Kings a 3–2 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Devils to tie the game in the third period.

Lenny Haminaho drove quickly to the Kings’ zone and took a good step to beat the defense. The Finnish rookie fed Gritsyuk backdoor, and Gritsyuk batted in the puck that was in mid-air and tied the game at three.

Quinton Byfield was later whistled for tripping, forcing New Jersey back on the power play for the third time. Hischier played well on the man advantage and the Devils regained the lead at 12:41 of the third period.

However, Haminaho’s puck was modest and the Devils were sent back to the PK, and Kopitar collected his second of the night to tie the game at four.

Kopitar’s second goal of the night saw him break the Los Angeles franchise record for points, the 1,308th of his career.

The Devils gained another man advantage after the whistle for holding Clarke.

Hughes took no time in giving the Devils their third lead of the night, scoring a goal on a FC-off draw to make the game 5–4 in favor of New Jersey.

Meyer deflected the empty-net goal to seal a 6–4 Devils victory.

Jake Allen made 27 saves on 31 shots and earned his 13th win of the season.

Devils despair, Jack Hughes despair

Certainly, the kind of loss the New Jersey Devils suffered on Thursday isn’t easy to swallow. This is a self-inflicted wound. Perhaps their $6 million goaltender shouldn’t have started his seventh game in a row. Perhaps the defense should have given him better support. And maybe they shouldn’t have waited until the last 10 minutes of the game to make a real push.

However, it all happened, and they ultimately lost to a team that sold their best players by the 2026 NHL trade deadline, and are in the running for worst team in the NHL. Despite the way the Devils’ season has gone, it’s still disappointing.

After the game, Jack Hughes was clearly disappointed. This is the first time we have seen him like this since the Olympic break. That locker room reaction is linked below.

Elsewhere, this summer’s looming free agency, Toronto is set to listen to William Nylander and post-deadline trades.

Devil’s Trade Rumors and News

New Jersey Hockey Now: This is hardly Devils-related news, but do you remember when Evgeni Dadonov was illegally traded by the Ottawa Senators to the Vegas Golden Knights – which was ultimately voided? Yes, we will assume the NHL has reviewed Ottawa’s appeal. More information on sentencing senators.

Last night was a good night to be a former devil. Two of those came to Jacob Markstrom en route to New Jersey’s embarrassing loss to the Calgary Flames.

Here’s Jack Hughes from the locker room after the game expressing his frustrations with some things, including the Devils’ lack of scoring ability.

📺 devil’s rink report: Tom Fitzgerald and the Devils certainly moved away from the strengths that made them so successful in the 2022-23 season. However, it’s not too late to fix it. And, no, I don’t mean in 2025-26. But, moving forward, the Devils can return to form and regain the form that saw them explode a few seasons ago. I take a deeper look at the latest Devils Rink report.

NHL modifies Senators’ punishment stemming from Devils forward

The National Hockey League has announced amendments to the disciplinary sanctions previously imposed on the Ottawa Senators related to their involvement in the July 2021 trade with the Vegas Golden Knights of forward Evgeni Dadonov (now with the New Jersey Devils), as well as a March 2022 trade attempt by the Golden Knights with the Anaheim Ducks, which was voided by the league.

basic penalty

Issues dealing with Dadonov’s no-trade clause resulted in the Senators originally being required to forfeit their first-round draft pick in either the 2024, 2025, or 2026 NHL Entry Draft, which contributed to the subsequent trade being invalidated.

reconsideration and revision

Senators requested reconsideration of the fine, primarily citing changes in franchise ownership and operational oversight since the original incident, arguing that the initial sanction is inappropriate under the current circumstances. After a thorough review, the NHL determined that a modification was necessary.

Revised Approval Details

  • The Senators will lose their natural first-round selection in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft (determined by lottery results and/or regular season standings, if they miss the playoffs).
  • In exchange for their original position the club will select 32nd overall (last pick of the first round) in the 2026 draft.
  • The Senators are prohibited from trading or moving this 32nd overall selection.
  • Additionally, the club must pay $1 million (CDN) Good.

To implement this change:

  • All other teams that originally finished behind the Senators in the first round will move up one spot in the draft order.
  • Regarding the 2026 draft lottery (if the Senators miss the playoffs): The team retains its standard odds based on regular season performance but is ineligible to win the lottery. Any draw combination assigned to Ottawa will start the draw again, ensuring an equal increase in lottery winning chances for all other non-playoff clubs.

great allocation

The $1 million fine will be directed to the NHL Foundation Canada, a league-supported charitable organization dedicated to strengthening Canadian communities and improving lives through hockey by promoting access and positive experiences on and off the ice.

The NHL said it would not provide any further comment on the matter. This resolution reflects the League’s view of the evolving circumstances while maintaining accountability for the original violation.

Dadonov plays for the Devils in 2025-26, and has no points in 18 games.

Devils Game 65, vs. Flames; How to view lines, notes and more

After a rare break in the schedule where the New Jersey Devils (32-30-2) had a three-game day, they were able to complete an equally rare two practices.

Tonight, the Calgary Flames (25-32-7) play at the Prudential Center in the middle of New Jersey’s current seven-game homestand.

After a four-game winning streak, the Detroit Red Wings put an end to the Devils’ latest advanced on-ice product, shutting out New Jersey on Sunday.

This lowered their playoff expectations to an even more unrealistic level and their chances of making the postseason dropped to 0.7%.

The Flames—who were nearly eliminated—were sold at the 2026 NHL trade deadline, leaving Nazem Kadri and Rasmus Andersen, two of their most rumored players, out.

Nevertheless, they brought some bodies to fill the void.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to Know vs Flames

– On January 19, 2026, the Devils and Calgary concluded their 2025–26 regular-season series after meeting out-of-conference foes.

—The Devils defeated Calgary north of the border 2–1 overtime.

-Simon Nemec scored the overtime winner, while Dawson Mercer scored the team’s first goal of the game.

-Jacob Markstrom recorded 21 saves on 22 shots against his former team on January 19.

-Captain Nico Hischier entered the contest with 13 career points (5G-8A) in 13 games against Calgary (1.08 points per game). Those stats also include one shorthanded goal and one game-winning goal. Seven of his 13 points (2G-5A) against Calgary were scored on the road.

-Former Calgary blueliner Dougie Hamilton has recorded 6 career points (1g-5a) in 6 career games with the Devils vs. the Flames.

Devils Blueline Chaos –

Devils Blueline Chaos – Lineup Changes and Growing Pains

What a strange time it is to be the New Jersey Devils.

There are a lot more questions than answers about the status of the organization between now and July 1, or perhaps, through the summer. One of the main questions will be on the blueline, and whether their veteran $9 million defenseman will still be with the Devils or their former second overall pick in 2022.

The Devils GM’s comments on the matter made things even more confusing. More information on that is in the link below.

Also below, some notes from practice and Tuesday’s lineup changes.

Elsewhere, Matthew Nease trade rumors, the latest 2026 NHL Draft rankings, and more.

Devil’s Trade Rumors and News

New Jersey Hockey Now: Yesterday’s deep dive highlighted GM Tom Fitzgerald’s latest denial of the Dougie Hamilton debacle, Hamilton’s ongoing media unavailability since the agent drama unfolded, and how the whole situation has made the blueline picture even bleaker heading into the summer. The noise surrounding the $7.4 million signing bonus he received on July 1 is keeping the trade buzz alive, and it’s raising real questions about Simon Nemec’s long-term fit in New Jersey.

On the ice yesterday, the Devils practiced Tuesday afternoon at the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House with three games left in the current seven-game homestand. All expected players were on the ice (Brett Pace is week-to-week with a lower body issue).

Biggest change: Jesper Bratt and Arseny Gritsyuk switched positions. Gritsyuk is back with Cody Glass and Lenny Haminaho. Head coach Sheldon Keefe explained that by finding his game intellectually away from Jack, Bratt has been reunited with Jack Hughes – who operates on a whole ‘nother level, and if you’re not on pace, it’s hard to succeed (no pun intended).

📺 devil’s rink report: While on the blueline, I asked GM Tom Fitzgerald about his relationship with Dougie Hamilton after his public debacle earlier this season. His answer made things even more confusing. I looked at the latest Devils Rink report.

sportsnet: Look, if the national media can recognize the growing pressure in New Jersey, so can the Devils organization. Even they know the fact that they did nothing at the NHL trade deadline is shocking, especially in light of their recent history, like the previously mentioned Hamilton sermon and yesterday’s Simon Nemec discussion.

NHL Trade Talk, News and National Hockey Now

athletic: With the way New Jersey has gone this season and the possibility that they will miss the Stanley Cup playoffs, you should probably all be familiar with this list of the top prospects in the 2026 NHL Draft. Here are the latest rankings.

pittsburgh hockey now: Captain Sidney Crosby took a morning skate with the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday. Here is the latest injury report from Dan Kingarski.

Montreal hockey now: Matthew Neese was at the center of trade rumors, and reportedly, the Montreal Canadiens could be in the mix.

Forever Blueshirts: New York Rangers captain JT Miller is making progress toward recovery from an upper-body injury, participating in the optional morning skate — his first time on the ice with teammates since landing on IR last week. Coach Mike Sullivan said he had had singles skates before and called it a sign of progress and expected to return “sooner or later” while taking it day by day.

Red Wings Tandem Destroys Devils; Win streak broken

So, it’s really all or nothing for the New Jersey Devils this season.

They look very impressive when they win. When they are defeated, they lay an egg. And that’s what happened Sunday night as the Motor City goaltenders hosted the Detroit Red Wings in a combined shutout.

The Devils played particularly well for 40 minutes. In fact, he put two on the sticks of Connor Brown and Lenny Haminaho.

However, their luck didn’t change and Jacob Markstrom’s second start of the weekend snapped the Devils’ four-game winning streak.

It was a good start for the Devils, who controlled the tempo of the game for the first three and a half minutes of play, and put good pressure on Red Wings goaltender John Gibson early.

However, the Red Wings took an early 1–0 lead when Markstrom was checked by traffic and found twine on the wrist of Moritz Seider from the point.

Regardless of the score, the Devils controlled the pace of the game for the remainder of the first period, but could not solve Gibson before the first intermission.

The same thing happened in the second period as New Jersey maintained control of the game despite falling behind on the scoreboard.

Detroit doubled its lead at the 6:37 mark of the second period after James van Riemsdyk gave the Red Wings a 2–0 lead after Markstrom redirected Seider’s shot from the blueline.

A fast-paced game came to a head when Brendan Dillon combined with Andrew Copp to push the Red Wings forward. Dillon was called for a two-minute intervention after several scuffles broke out between whistles.

However, the Devils coughed up the minor penalty.

When the Devils and Red Wings emerged from their respective locker rooms after the second intermission, Detroit made a goal-tending change. Gibson remained in the Detroit locker room, while Cam Talbot took the net in relief.

And then the Red Wings took over.

The Devils could not keep up with Detroit, who took control of the game not only on the scoreboard, but on the ice as well.

Dominic Shine scored his first NHL goal by tapping Van Riemsdyk’s cross ice pass past Markstrom to increase the Red Wings’ lead to 3–0 and seal the victory for Detroit.

Markstrom made 27 saves on 30 shots and suffered his 15th loss of the season.

Devil’s Trade Buzz; Namek Watch; Deadline day!

We’re nine hours away from the 2026 NHL trade deadline. Will the New Jersey Devils make some noise, or kick the can down the road until the summer in the draft?

They started yesterday with an effort to free up cap space. There is more information on what the multiple player discount means in the link below.

Below, there’s also an update on Simon Nemec ahead of the deadline.

Elsewhere, a surprise name on the trading block in Toronto, the latest on Vincent Trocheck, and more!

Let’s do that hockey.

Devil’s Trade Rumors and News

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils waived three players on Thursday. Evgeny Dadonov, Luke Glendening, and Maxim Tsyplyakov. Here’s what this trio of exemptions, the implications of the limits, and what it all means.

With the current state of the NHL trade market, the Devils should consider trading Cody Glass for one reason only.

TSN: Here’s the latest on Simon Nemec, and his apparent desire to reel in a first-line center?

NHL Trade Talk, News and National Hockey Now

This could be a very active day on the business front. Here’s what happened yesterday:

Toronto Hockey Now: Well, that’s a big deal. The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Matthew Nize is listening on. However, on one condition. Wouldn’t that look good in red and black?

The Athletic ($): Another name that could be in trend today is Sergei Bobrovsky. That’s why it’s a good idea for the Cats to potentially move the Russian netminder.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Yes, Evgeni Malkin is going to be fined at least. The Pittsburgh Penguins forward had a stellar performance last night against the Buffalo Sabres, providing a blow to Rasmus Dahlin.

Colorado Hockey Now: The NHL trade deadline is less than 24 hours away and the Colorado Avalanche have already made several moves to address roster needs. However, this has been nothing unprecedented. Is there more coming next?

Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers started selling some pieces yesterday. AJ Greer sat out last night as well. Is he on the next step?

Philly Hockey Now: After Colton Parayko snubbed the Sabers by exercising his trade clause, could Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen be back on the table?

Montreal Hockey Now: Can the Montreal Canadiens be a winner in the Vincent Trocheck sweepstakes? At least they’re in the mix.

The Devils should trade Cody Glass for only one reason

With the way the NHL trade market is shaping up, the New Jersey Devils should consider trading Cody Glass. However, they should consider it for one reason only.

The Devils have been seeking an upgrade to their top six for quite some time. They want to add a forward with scoring skills who can play on a line with Jack Hughes – a void that has been left since Tyler Toffoli transferred two deadlines ago.

Given that the Devils’ playoff hopes are all but gone while the NHL trade market appears to be bloated, moving Glass to help the Devils accumulate assets to help them acquire the scorer they are looking for seems like an obvious move.

Glass is in the first year of a two-year contract. He has a favorable $2.5 million cap hit and is no trade protection.

A lot of teams that are scouting or heading to the postseason are in the market for a center.

The Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Montreal Canadiens, and Glass’ former club, the Vegas Golden Knights – currently playing Mitch Marner as a center – all fit the bill.

Maybe even the Edmonton Oilers. However, they just acquired Jason Dickinson from the Chicago Blackhawks, and will likely install him at the center position.

Glass, who plays at a favorable cap hit while scoring at a 20-goal pace with elite defensive metrics as a third-line center who can also kill penalties, makes him a desirable addition for most playoff teams.

The Devils forward explained that before playing in New Jersey, he never really had a designated role. Sheldon Keefe said Glass’ role has led to his success this season.

Thus, an inquiring team should be able to see similar success with Glass. Especially now that they know what they are getting with the former sixth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

So, what can devils get from glass?

Well, recent history saw the Nashville Predators trade Michael McCarron to the Minnesota Wild for a 2028 second-round selection. Remaining with the Predators, they sent Cole Smith to Vegas for a 2028 third-round pick and a prospect.

Given that these prices are for depth forwards who don’t have scoring touch, Glass could certainly fetch more, especially because he plays a premium position.

Is a first-round pick out of the question? Especially for a team like the Avalanche? They don’t have that pick this year, but they do have 2027, and there’s no reason to believe the first-round pick won’t be closer to the second round than the top half of the first round.

Even if it isn’t that much, a few second-round picks in 2027 also seem plausible. This gives the Devils enough compensation to be flexible with their possessions to reel in a goalscorer.

The Devils are reportedly ready to land Simon Nemec in the right deal. Add the compensation from the Glass deal, or perhaps add what New Jersey has better, and maybe they could go with Jordan Kirou.

And if no moves are made by the trade deadline, perhaps the Devils could seriously add a guy like Jason Robertson into the mix should he not be dealt with Dallas this summer. Or, dare I say it, Brady Tkachuk if things go to extremes in Ottawa.

But, why trade glass if you will need it in the future?

Well, for starters, the Devils can always keep Nick Bjugstad. This was his intention after all. However, he is probably better suited in a 4C role.

Still, there will be plenty of options through free agency this summer.

Some names that come to mind – if they reach July 1 – are Charlie Coyle, JG Pageau, Bobby McMann and Boone Jenner. Dare I say, Eric Haula will also be available.

It is certainly important that the Devils do not let their 3C position become a black hole again. However, the bigger hole is on Jack’s left side, where the Devils have been looking for a goalscorer for a long time.

The Devils should trade Glass, but only if they can use the compensation they receive later to reel in the goalscorer they want in the top six.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have Kirau than Glass.

Manchester United and Liverpool ahead in transfer battle for defender – Red Devils act first

last month, sports witness Manchester United’s claims of interest in Juventus’ Pierre Kalulu covered. Liverpool are also emerging as candidates for the defender.

The Red Devils went on a scouting mission to keep an eye on the French. It happened during Juve’s Serie A clash against Inter Milan.

Kalulu was controversially sent off as the Bianconeri lost the match. As chaos erupted over Alessandro Bastoni’s diving tackle to secure a red card in Italy, it was easy to forget how important Kalulu has been this season.

Despite this, the defender could leave Turin in the summer. Manchester United and Liverpool are trying to bring him to England.

Juve is looking for attractive offers

today’s gazzetta dello sport Report on the Bianconeri’s plans for the summer. The Italian giants have big ideas they want to implement and they can only do so if there are some sales.

Kalulu is believed to be a candidate to step down, especially if given the right offer.

His impressive season in the Premier League has not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United and Liverpool ready to compete for him, with the newspaper saying a sale would be ‘dependent on offers’.

Kenan Yildiz and Weston McKennie are the only players who are not sellable. The rest of the Bianconeri squad carries a price tag.

Big money unlikely to be spent on Kalulu

Juve paid around €17m to sign Kalulu from Milan. This was an initial loan which later became permanent.

At the moment, his contract in Turin expires in the summer of 2029 and there has been no progress on a renewal so far. With all this in mind, big money is unlikely to be spent on the ex-Lyon player.

Even though he has been very impressive, the deal should be sealed by handing over capital gains to Juve. The financial situation in Serie A is generally such a delicate one.

And he would be a very useful signing for Manchester United and Liverpool. The main reason for this is his ability to play on the backline and do an equally reliable job everywhere. Furthermore, he is only 25 years old and is reaching his prime.

Simon Nemec is generating Devils trade interest

We’re three days away from the 2026 NHL trade deadline. The New Jersey Devils are in a precarious position, with the possibility of them missing the playoffs after a disappointing 2025-26 season that had a lot of expectations. Heading into Friday’s deadline, it appears defenseman Simon Nemec is generating Devils trade interest.

According to Pierre LeBrun, NHL Insider, “It will be interesting to see what happens on the Simon Nemec front. The Devils are taking a call on the second overall pick from ’22. There’s no shortage of teams investigating. New Jersey is happy to keep him, but if a deal comes along that upgrades their forward in a real way, they’re going to be listening…”

Nemec improved his stock significantly this season, scoring some clutch goals to either send New Jersey to overtime, or win a game in extra frames.

He then went on to the Olympics where he played top pairing, No. 1 defenseman minutes for Slovakia and played his part in almost helping Slovakia get a medal and surprisingly finish fourth in the tournament.

General manager Tom Fitzgerald has been open about his desire to add a forward. The Devils continue to look for a top-line solution to play alongside Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt.

“I’d like to add further. I want to continue to add more depth,” Fitzgerald said in January. “I think the whole league is probably looking for the same thing. You can figure it out. But you know, that hasn’t changed from two summers ago. We tried to add last deadline. When you’re just trying to add you, you identify those areas and stick your nose down hard and do the work.”

Dougie Hamilton is another name on the Devils trade block. He has generated considerable interest, however, his $9 million cap hit has proven difficult to exceed, especially with his $7.4 million bonus due on July 1.

The Devils appear to be following the path of least resistance with a ton of defensemen at their disposal, but perhaps too many of them have trade protection.

We’ll see what happens between now and Friday.

Devils pounce on Panthers, find scoring touch

Watch what happens when the New Jersey Devils score first?

Hosting the defending back-to-back champions, the Florida Panthers, New Jersey looked like themselves again in a 5–1 victory to start their seven-game homestand.

It was a slow start as the Panthers pressured Jacob Markstrom and maintained puck possession with five shots in the first three-plus minutes of the period.

However, the Devils tilted the ice back in their direction, opening the scoring on the stick of Arseniy Gritsyuk.

Connor Brown forced a turnover in the neutral zone as the Panthers attempted to transition to the Devils’ end of the ice.

Gritsyuk picked up the loose puck, led an awkward run the other way with Jack Hughes, but opted to shoot and beat Sergei Bobrovsky for a 1–0 lead at the 12:10 mark of the first period.

20 seconds after the Devils scored, Carter Verhaeghe set up Jack in the corner behind the Devils’ net. Panthers forwards got two minutes for boarding, while Brendan Dillon and Eetu Luostarinen got two minutes for roughing.

Jack surfaced after the boarding incident and remained safe in the game.

Anton Lundell equalized the score at one just as Dillon and Luostarinen came out of their respective penalty boxes.

A physical, playful game continued in the second period, however, as the Devils quickly separated themselves from the Panthers on the scoreboard.

Jack received a pass from Jasper Bratt in the Florida slot but sent the puck wide of the Panther net. Still, Dougie Hamilton was in the right place at the right time, as the rubber bounced off the end board and landed right in front of him for an easy tap-in, giving the Devils a 2-1 lead 1:35 into the middle frame.

About halfway through the second period, Cody Glass widened the gap by redirecting Lenny Haminaho’s shot from the right point, scoring his 14th of the season to give New Jersey a 3–1 lead.

The third period proved that the ice was tilted in New Jersey’s favor. Bobrowski made 10 saves in the final 20 minutes to keep Florida from a two-goal deficit.

However, this did not prevent the Devils from maintaining the majority of puck possession.

Paul Morrissey pulled Bobrovsky with about three and a half minutes remaining in the game. Dawson Mercer forced a turnover in the neutral zone and scored on an empty net to increase the Devils’ lead to 4–1.

Simon Nemec added a second empty-net goal to solidify a 5–1 victory.

Markstrom recently had another strong performance, making 20 saves on 21 shots and earning his 17th win of the season.

Devil’s Trade Finder; Deadlines Sparking Action; hidden gem

It looks like this Friday could be a boom or bust day for the New Jersey Devils. You come to a general English class. You’re in a weird situation where they know the roster – or at least the core – has massively underachieved this year. To be frank, they should have been in the playoffs. So what do they do? Are they in a sellers’ market? Or are they already adjusting to the transformative heat. Probably, they don’t do anything.

It all depends on who is running the roster, and there is no reason to believe it isn’t Tom Fitzgerald. We will see.

In Link, six players could move out and where they could land.

Elsewhere, there will be plenty of discussion on NHL trade leading up to Friday.

Let’s do that hockey.

📺 Devils Rink Report: On Friday’s Devils Rink Report, NHL Insider David Pagnotta joins me to discuss the possibility of a Dougie Hamilton trade. After those rumors quieted down at the beginning of winter, things have resurfaced somewhat.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: So, the Pittsburgh Penguins are short Sidney Crosby, but he’ll be back. And they are still winning without their captain. So, despite the belief that they have proven to be a playoff team, what is their NHL trade deadline plan?

Colorado Hockey Now: Is Nazem Kadri finally heading back to the Colorado Avalanche? Reportedly these talks are gaining momentum.

Devil’s Trade Buzz; Trocheck reunion at deadline?

The New Jersey Devils’ win over the weekend doesn’t change anything. It is likely that they will come up with some things by Friday, including some names that can be considered.

NHL insider David Pagnotta joined me on Friday’s podcast to discuss Dawson Mercer and how his name has come up several times. You can find the YouTube link to that conversation below.

Also below, how other teams view Dougie Hamilton.

Elsewhere, a Vincent Trocheck reunion? Auston Matthews calls Toronto, and Igor Shesterkin claims “not English.”

Let’s do that hockey.

Devil’s Trade Rumors and News

The Athletic ($): Regardless of how you feel about Dougie Hamilton’s play, he is still viewed as a top-pairing defenseman in the league. That’s why he can still expect a solid return at the 2026 NHL trade deadline.

📺 Devils Rink Report: On Friday’s episode of Devils Rink Report, NHL insider David Pagnotta talked about where he thinks the core and its surrounding big names can move forward. Dawson Mercer as a bubble core guy is a name that has come up a few times.

Forever Blueshirts: Igor Shesterkin has done this before. And now, he has done it again. The Russian goaltender was injured and unavailable to speak when the New York Rangers published the letter waving the white flag on their season. Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Another great win for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Here’s how they survive without Sidney Crosby.

Florida Hockey Now: Man, Matthew Schaefer is incredible, isn’t he? However, their heroics on Long Island defeated the defending Stanley Cup champions, who see their season come to an end. Do the Florida Panthers have any reason to keep believing?

Detroit Hockey Now: Here are some of the top centers on the NHL trade market right now. So, what are the Detroit Red Wings willing to sacrifice for what?

Toronto Hockey Now: As the season winds down, Auston Matthews says the Toronto Maple Leafs are “embarrassing.”

Devils star to appear on ‘Tonight Show’ after Team USA golden goal

New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes will appear in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon With his brother Quinn Hughes and Women’s Team USA Hockey captain Hillary Knight on Monday, March 2, 2026. The joint interview is based on both the men’s and women’s gold medal performances at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, where both teams defeated Canada in overtime to win the gold medal.

On Sunday, February 22, 2026, Hughes scored the decisive goal in a 2–1 overtime win in the men’s gold-medal game. At 1:41 of the extra frame, he beat Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington in the five-hole on Zach Werenski’s cross-ice pass, securing Team USA’s first men’s Olympic hockey gold since 1980. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves in the win. Hughes led Team USA in tournament goals (four) and played a key role after raising some doubts due to a poor 4 Nations face-off performance a year ago.

Upon his return to New Jersey, the Devils honored Hughes in a pregame ceremony at the Prudential Center before their first game.

“I’m very proud and I’m very pleased that the men’s and women’s USA hockey teams brought gold medals back to the United States,” Hughes said during his pregame ceremony.

“You guys are making me emotional.”

tonight show The episode, airing at 11:35pm ET/PT on NBC (with streaming the next day on Peacock), will also include guests Nicole Kidman and Luke Thompson, as well as a cooking segment with chef Mario Carbone.

The Devils’ first overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft is seeing his stock rise from NHL star to international superstar.

“Obviously, it’s been some of the best three days of my life,” Hughes said Wednesday upon returning to the Devils after the Olympic break. I had a lot of fun with that group of guys, and I’m sure everyone on the team is probably wishing it was still going on, but it’s good to get back into my routine and get back to work here.

Fitzgerald still considering Stamkos Devils trade?

Is general manager Tom Fitzgerald still considering a Steven Stamkos, New Jersey Devils trade?

Earlier in 2025–26, it was reported that the Devils were considering the two-time Stanley Cup champion as a trade target amid the struggles in Nashville.

However, due to the emergence of Stamkos after early season struggles, the Predators have turned things around.

Now, Stamkos is on pace to score 41 goals by the end of the season, and has scored 29 goals in 58 games so far.

The Predators are sitting out of the playoffs, two points removed from the second wild card spot in the West which is occupied by the Seattle Kraken.

However, GM Barry Trotz’s time in Nashville is coming to an end, and the Predators organization could be headed in a whole new direction.

Thus, insider Pierre LeBrun revealed to TSN Insider Trading that although Stamkos is happy to stay where he is, he and his agent have prepared destinations for which the 35-year-old sniper would consider waiving his full no-move clause.

“Steven Stamkos has an absolute no-move clause,” LeBrun began. “Here’s what’s happening. He controls his destiny here and he’s not asking out. Stamkos is happy in Nashville. But, in preparation for if Predators management goes to him before next Friday and says, ‘We have some offers on the table,’ I’m told Stamkos and his camp have prepared themselves. And they’ve prepared themselves by making a list of preferred destinations. I’m told that’s at the top of the list. There’s Tampa Bay, then Dallas, and then Minnesota. There are three teams on that list.

Although the Lightning, Stars and Wild top Stamkos’ list, there is another team the sniper will consider.

“To some extent, New Jersey,” LeBrun said. “The Devils tried to sign him two years ago. But, of course, it’s the Lightning, Stars and Wild. Keep in mind, I think this is more likely a summer discussion, a summer trade. But, prepare yourself for that possibility.”

So, here’s the thing. Clearly, the Devils are not making the postseason this year. This will be the beginning of a summer in New Jersey in which one will have to evaluate what went wrong in a year where expectations were so high.

Those evaluations will also include GM and head coach Sheldon Keefe.

Fitzgerald’s previous interest in Stamkos is well documented. It is logical for the devils to also be interested in it. They currently rank last among the 32 NHL clubs in goals-per-game (2.46), and Stamkos brings a huge source of firepower.

Here’s what we know. New Jersey Hockey Now has learned that although the 2025-26 season was a complete failure, management believes it is a blip on the radar.

The belief is that with the right retool, they can come back and compete next season, especially under the leadership of Jack Hughes – who, supposedly, has to stay healthy.

The Devils have been looking for the right player for a very long time to be their franchise forward and skate on a proper first line in New Jersey with Jesper Bratt.

Hughes and Bratt feeding Stamkos the puck to shoot makes all the sense in the world. However, it depends on the cost acquisition. In fact, it also depends on who will decide when the season ends.

So yes. New Jersey’s current management is still interested in Stamkos’ services. They are more outside candidates than the three teams LeBrun has named as frontrunners.

Still, depending on who is in charge this summer – as long as Stamkos remains in Nashville – the potential next GM may have an entirely different idea about Stamkos.

Markstrom’s efforts in vain, Penguins hand Devils fifth consecutive defeat

The highlight of the night for the New Jersey Devils at PPG Paints Arena was when the Pittsburgh Penguins faithful gave golden goalscorer Jack Hughes a standing ovation to solidify Team USA’s victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Then again, it was penguins all night.

Fork is found in the kitchen. In other words, the Devils gave up the game’s first goal – once again – to the Penguins in the first period.

Late in the opening frame, Arseniy Gritsyuk was charged a minor penalty or fouled Penguins defenseman, Parker Wotherspoon, and the Penguins went on the power play.

About a minute into the man advantage for Pittsburgh, Kris Letang’s blast was redirected by Tommy Novak, giving the Penguins a 1–0 lead.

It was a slow first period for the Devils, who ended the period with a 9-6 shot differential deficit.

However, the second season started much better. In a similar manner to how Novak scored – albeit at power – Hughes fed Dougie Hamilton at the Penguins blueline for a one-time blast.

Paul Cotter redirected a Hamilton shot and tied the game at one.

Dan Muse and the Penguins challenged the Devils goal for goaltender interference. Still, the challenge went New Jersey’s way, which put a goal on the board and sent the Devils to the power play.

Still, the Devils failed to convert the man advantage and three additional power plays gained in the second period.

It was all Penguins in the third period as they regained the lead after quickly taking control of the game.

At 6:30 of the final frame, Ryan Shea’s rocket from the left circle hit the cross bar and bounced off Connor Clifton at the opposite point. When the puck came to him the veteran defenseman did not hesitate, wound up and scored to give the Penguins a 2–1 lead.

50 seconds later, Yegor Chinakhov caught the Devils napping. He slipped behind the Devils defense and Evgeni Malkin fed him for a half-breakaway and Chinakhov scored to put the Penguins ahead by two goals, making the game 3–1.

The Devils pulled Markstrom with less than four minutes to play and after the man advantage, Clifton had the puck taken out of play and sat for delay of game.

Blake Lizotte hit an empty net to seal the Devils’ 29th loss of the season and fifth consecutive.

Jacob Markstrom’s strong start wasted. The Swiss goaltender brought a little Olympic swag back with him. Still, they surrendered three goals on 33 shots they faced.

Devils Game 59, no seed; Lines, Notes, and How to See Penguin Vs.

Much like Jack Hughes and Team USA faced Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, the New Jersey Devils (28-28-2) visited the Pittsburgh Penguins (29-15-2) without Sidney Crosby.

Crosby was injured in Canada’s semi-final match against Finland and could not mount a tough challenge in the gold medal game. As a result, the Penguins placed him on injured reserve, and he would be absent for approximately four weeks.

The Devils are chasing the Penguins head-to-head in an unlikely quest for the playoffs. As the NHL schedule resumes after another boring, punchless loss last night, the Devils will be looking to find any kind of score tonight against Pittsburgh.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to Know vs Penguins

– The Devils and Steel City face off for the second of four matches this season after the Jersey side defeated the Pens in a 2-1 shootout win at the Rock on November 8.

-Arseny Gritsyuk scored the only goal in regulation against Pittsburgh on November 8, while Paul Cotter (GDG) and Jesper Bratt both scored in the shootout round.

-Jake Allen got the win between the pipes against Pittsburgh and stopped both of Pittsburgh’s shootout attempts.

—Bratt has 28 career points (8G-20A) in 31 career games against Pittsburgh, the second-most points of his career against a single opponent (vs. PHI – 29).

—Looking Back…Dawson Mercer earned his first career NHL hat trick against Pittsburgh in April of 2022–23.

-In points… Nico Hischier is first in the NHL with 687 face-off wins this season, while Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby is second with 649 face-off wins in 2025-26, per Jan. 7.

—The Devils and Penguins have both recorded three games without a win.

Jack Hughes reaffirms Devils loyalty after Team USA gold

After hearing the words of confirmation from Jack Hughes on Wednesday night, New Jersey Devils fans have certainly taken a lot of comfort in the franchise forward’s future with the organization.

Hughes went with Team USA to Milan, Italy with one goal. To win the gold medal. Little did he know that his goal would be to seal the deal. However, Team USA felt the gold was theirs.

“Obviously we had a lot of confidence in that locker room,” Hughes said. There were a lot of people like alphas in a room, you know? It’s the same with Canada, but there are a lot of big dogs in the room, a lot of guys who believe in themselves, and believe in the group. I think for our team, it didn’t matter who got it, we were just so happy that we got it done. And there was so much confidence in that room that we were going to move forward, and we did.”

Hughes scored the golden goal in overtime to upset Canada and win the gold medal for the United States for the first time since 1980.

The party was going on from there. Team USA arrived in Miami, Florida to celebrate and then traveled to the White House, accepting an invitation from United States President Donald Trump.

“Obviously, it’s been some of the best three days of my life,” Hughes said. “I had a lot of fun with that group of guys, and I’m sure everyone on the team is probably wishing it was still going on, but it’s good to get back into my routine and get back to work here.”

After the White House cameo, Hughes headed back to New Jersey for the Devils’ tilt against the Buffalo Sabers when the NHL schedule resumes on Wednesday.

His legs weren’t right yet, but as the game progressed, he started looking better and better.

“He had a lot of short shifts early on and he’s not a short shift guy,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “If he’s giving you short shifts, you know he’s not feeling it early. But I felt as the game went on, he was increasing his shifts. He wants to be there and you almost have to take him off. [the ice] Because he wants to bring change.

“All things considered, I thought he gave us a lot.”

The Devils’ usual struggles continued on Wednesday. The scoring problems continued despite shot totals and they lost their first game to the Sabres, 2–1. At this point, New Jersey’s season is almost over.

Combine this with the idea that the Devils failed to add the very available Quinn Hughes – Jack’s older brother and Team USA teammate – earlier this year and many began to worry that the Devils could lose their franchise face at some point.

This extended to Jack’s pre- and post-game speeches. Before and after the game, Hughes expressed his love for New Jersey amid questions about his big moment in Milan, which will forever be etched in USA Hockey history.

“I really love living in New Jersey and playing in New Jersey. For some reason, when I got drafted, obviously I was their first overall pick, and I’m an American kid, but I feel like they’ve accepted me so deeply. I feel like, I’m their guy, you know? I’m their guy. I come to these games, and every time I drive by, I just think about that when I see people walking by. [around the Prudential Center] With a Hughes jersey at 4:30. I’m opening my window and yelling at them. They like it, you know?

“But just to represent New Jersey, to represent our fans, like I’m very proud to be a Devil. I’m very proud to play for the Blitzer family, the Harris family, the Fitzgeralds. These guys, it means a lot to me, so to represent them through all of this… just… New Jersey means a lot to me.”

See, the thing is this. Jack could ask questions about the Olympics and tell it all about himself and how big this moment was to him. Instead, he placed all the blame on Team USA, the United States Hockey Development Program, and the Devils for helping them get to this point.

He didn’t need to profess his love for New Jersey. He didn’t need to talk about ownership, or the highly scrutinized Devils GM.

Still, despite public admissions earlier this year that Jack wanted to play with Quinn in addition to younger brother Luke Hughes, Jack made sure the Devils and their faithful knew he held them close.

He shouldn’t have done this.

So, Jack went to the 2026 Winter Olympics and came back an accomplished man. It’s a moment he and Team USA will never forget. However, Jack made it clear that he has the same ambitions for himself in New Jersey. Except he’s not chasing gold in New Jersey. He is looking for a silver medal in the form of a Stanley Cup.

Maybe…after all, the New Jersey speculation about Quinn isn’t over.

This is according to Ft. Mercato. The French website reports that the 27-year-old has been attracting attention thanks to his performances this season. Manchester United are one of the teams that are keeping a close eye on the former Marseille player.

Gueye has been climbing the rankings steadily for a few years now, but he peaked in January when he scored the winning goal. Africa Cup of Nations final.

It made him an icon for his country, but also ‘sent a message’ according to FM. Gueye has become an even more complete midfielder during his time with Villarreal in Spain.

Why are Manchester United interested?

Pep Guey Hai ‘shining brightly’ After joining La Liga on a free transfer in 2024. At the moment, he is an essential piece of the puzzle for manager Marcelino.

Technically his game has improved tremendously and still ‘One of the most prolific’ Defensive midfielder in Spain. He is playing in a team that constantly struggles to make the top four.

it’s become one ‘Surprising change’And the feeling is that even more ‘Prestigious’ The club may be waiting around the corner.

It certainly feels like it would be a miracle for Villarreal to keep him this summer, especially after the World Cup.

Red Devils showed ‘a lot of interest’

Manchester United is one of the performing sides ‘Quite interested’ In that. they can make a ‘Very attractive offer’ To secure his signature.

The Red Devils will need a replacement for Casemiro. Gueye is seen as someone who could be ‘ideal’ to do this. There is no mention of the asking price at this point. It should be pointed out that Gueye’s current deal expires in 2028.

As a result, Villarreal may view this summer window as the ideal time to sell if they want to secure a top price – unless they manage to tie down the 27-year-old to a new deal.

But with his status rising and Manchester United looking to make ends meet, this could prove a difficult task.

Will Jack Hughes play for the Devils tonight vs. Sabres?

The Olympic break is over and the NHL schedule resumes tonight. Upon their return to the docks the New Jersey Devils will host the Buffalo Sabers in one of eight games. It’s a quick turnaround from the Olympic Games, with Team USA celebrating their victory in Miami and then visiting the White House in Washington, D.C., so will Devils franchise forward Jack Hughes play tonight in Newark?

According to the Devils, Hughes will not participate in Wednesday’s morning skate after returning to New Jersey from the White House late Tuesday night.

However, he would hold a press conference after the game that would detract from the post-game locker room media brawls with the players and head coach Sheldon Keefe.

The Devils expect Hughes to be ready and playing against the Sabers when the puck drops around 7:08 pm ET.

Hughes scored the golden goal for Team USA to lead them past Canada, capping a tremendous tournament for the Devils franchise after facing some criticism before the start of the Olympic Games.

Hughes scored four goals—leading Team USA—and seven points in six games during the tournament.

What started as a trial run on the fourth line after a disappointing 4-nation face-off tournament last season ended with glory as he became America’s hero, helping capture gold for the first time since the 1980 Miracle on Ice.

Now, the focus turns back to New Jersey where the Devils have a 2.4% chance of making the playoffs. The Devils have 25 games remaining on their schedule, and they are 11 points out of a playoff position behind the New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division and the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference wild card race.

In 36 games for the Devils this season, Hughes scored 12 goals and 37 points despite missing 21 games due to two separate injuries.

Devils Game 58, NHL’s Back; How to View Lines, Notes, and Versus Sabers

The NHL is back, and so are the New Jersey Devils. The first night of game action following the Olympic break consisted of eight games. The Devils host the Buffalo Sabres, who face 25 playoff games.

Why like playoffs at this point?

Well, they are on the verge of losing their season with a 2.4% chance of reaching the playoffs. The Devils are 11 points out of a playoff position with little runway to make up any ground.

Jack Hughes—who was in Washington DC yesterday with Team USA, having been invited by the President of the United States to the State of the Union address—remains questionable in terms of his availability. However, barring an unknown injury, it would be surprising to see him sit out.

Washington is only a few hours away by car.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

Here’s how the Devils’ Simon Nemec is the top defenseman in the Olympics

Calle Makar, Quinn Hughes, Miro Heiskanen, Roman Josi and Rasmus Dahlin are some of the best defensemen in the NHL. All play for their respective countries in the 2026 Winter Olympics, making them among the best blueliners in the world. And yet, during the preliminary rounds, none of them rank as top defenders in the offensive zone. That ranking goes to New Jersey Devils defenseman Simon Nemec.

This is correct. The 22-year-old blueliner was taken second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft and is proving to be an international phenomenon. After all, there’s a reason why the devils took him so high when he was only 18 years old.

Nemec’s exposure at the international level is nothing new. He scored one goal and nine points in eight games at the U18 World Juniors in 2022, leading Slovakia to the gold medal.

He has been a major contributor for Slovakia at all levels during the international game leading up to the 2026 Winter Olympics, and he is continuing on that path this winter.

Slovakia was the biggest surprise among the winners of their group. Everyone expected Team USA and Team Canada to earn byes. A good performance was also expected from Finland. However, they were not expected to earn a bye as the best second-place team in the tournament. That’s because Slovakia ruined his and Sweden’s plans by winning Group B.

A lot of the oxygen around Slovakia is taken up by Montreal Canadiens forward Juraj Slafkovsky.

Three goals and three assists in three games will do that for the 21-year-old Habs star.

However, where Slafkowski has dominated among the forwards, Nemec has been doing the same on the blueline.

His raw stats don’t jump off the page like Slafkowski’s with two assists in three games. However, according to Jeffres Viz HockeyStats, Nemec is the top chance-creating defenseman in the Olympics.

Through three games in the prelims, Nemec created an average of two scoring chances and made 3.7 chance assists for a total of 5.7 chance creation. This is 1.4 more chances than the next leading creator (Dahlin) in the tournament.

And the most interesting thing about Nemec’s success at the Olympic level is the competition she had to go through to do so. Sure, Slovakia beat Italy, but they also had to overcome Sweden and Finland, and Nemec had a lot to contribute to their success and earning a bye into the quarterfinals.

Nemec has been playing top pairing duties next to Washington Capitals defenseman, Martin Fehrvary. The Devils defenseman has taken on the responsibility as Slovakia’s No. 1 blueliner, averaging 22 minutes on ice per game.

The Devils will need to take some notes on how he has been unlocked in Milan and apply them when Nemec gets back to New Jersey as soon as possible.

Devil’s Barometer; Rangers offer sheet?

There was no men’s Olympic hockey yesterday, a day before play-ins to solidify the quarterfinals. That way, all the New Jersey Devils in attendance could enjoy a day in Milan, Italy before things got better.

We checked out how each of the Seven Devils is performing up to this point. The barometer is linked below.

Elsewhere, are the Blueshirts ready to draw an offer sheet this summer? Perhaps the promotion in Detroit is exaggerated. And a shocking suspension from France.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devil’s Trade Rumors and News

New Jersey Hockey Now: Yesterday was a day off due to the end of prelims. The play-in round is going on today to decide who will play in the quarter-finals. Here’s a barometer of who among the Devils in Milan is raising their stock and who is lowering their stock.

📺 Devils Rink Report: Okay so at forward, Jack Hughes has been the Devils’ best forward. But on the blueline, it’s all about Simon Nemec. I explained why on the Devil’s Rink Report.

This was an interesting choice. This probably isn’t something the San Jose Sharks or Jeff Skinner envisioned when he signed to play in California this summer. However, the Sharks are shopping Skinner. He is on unconditional remission till 2 pm tomorrow, which is likely to clear later today.

The Athletic ($): I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this. But, the French Olympic Federation suspended Pierre Crinnon for the remainder of the Olympics for his fight with Tom Wilson. The IIHF and Canada did not suspend one of the NHL’s finest agitators.

Forever Blueshirts: Is an offer sheet an option for the New York Rangers to re-sign this summer? Here are some names they may target.

Detroit Hockey Now: Sebastian Cossa has only had one cup of coffee at the NHL level. Still, he probably has nothing left to prove at the AHL level. Kevin Allen says he looks ready for the Detroit Red Wings. Hey, why not learn from John Gibson?

Carolina Hockey Now: The Carolina Hurricanes signed standout goaltender Brandon Bussey yesterday. Here’s how his new deal compares to other NHL netminders.

Shocking Penalty Decision in Cricket: Rare Umpiring Call Stuns Fans!

Shocking Penalty Decision in Cricket: Rare Umpiring Call Stuns Fans!

Cricket is often called a “gentleman’s game,” but it is also a game governed by some of the most complex rules in the sporting world. Recently, the cricketing community was left in disbelief after a rare penalty decision shifted the momentum of a high-stakes match. While Indian fans are used to DRS drama and boundary-line catches, this particular incident involving penalty runs has sparked a massive debate across social media.

The Rare Incident: What Triggered the 5-Run Penalty?

In a shock to the players and the stadium crowd, the on-field umpire signaled five penalty runs. But what exactly happened? Under MCC Law 28, penalty runs can be awarded for various infractions, such as the ball hitting a discarded fielder’s helmet on the ground or “fake fielding.”

In this latest instance, the penalty was attributed to deliberate distraction or obstruction of the batter. As the batter attempted a crucial second run, a fielder’s unnecessary movement or gesture was deemed a violation of the spirit of the game. For Indian fans, who follow every nuance of the IPL and International matches, such calls serve as a reminder that the rulebook is as sharp as a fast bowler’s yorker.

The Impact on the Match Result

The addition of five runs to the batting team’s total without a single ball being faced changed the dynamic of the chase. In T20 cricket, where games are won or lost by a single run, a five-run gift is monumental. Analysts are now calling for more consistency from officials, while fans remain divided on whether the “spirit of cricket” was upheld or if the call was too harsh.

Hockey Scores Update: India’s Performance on the Turf

While cricket made headlines for its rules, Indian Hockey has been making headlines for its goals. The Indian Men’s and Women’s teams have been in sensational form globally, maintaining their dominance in the Asian circuit and putting up a fight in the Pro League.

Recent Hockey Results:

  • India vs. Germany: A thrilling 3-2 victory for the Men in Blue, showcasing tactical brilliance in the final quarter.
  • India vs. Australia: A hard-fought 2-2 draw, with the Indian goalkeeper making crucial saves in the shootout.
  • Asian Champions Trophy Trends: India continues to lead the points table with a series of clean sheets.

For those tracking live hockey scores, the focus is now shifting toward the upcoming qualifiers. The speed of the modern game, combined with India’s renewed attacking flair, has brought hockey back into the mainstream conversation alongside cricket.

Conclusion

The world of Indian sports is never short of excitement. From the shocking penalty decision in cricket that left experts scratching their heads to the gritty hockey scores that prove India’s dominance on the turf, there is much to celebrate and discuss. As the rules of cricket continue to evolve to protect the fairness of the game, and as Indian hockey climbs the global rankings, fans are in for a thrilling season of sportsmanship and high-octane drama.

No, the umpire’s decision regarding penalty runs for unfair play is usually final and cannot be overturned via a player bypass or DRS, as it is a disciplinary call.

3. Where can I check live hockey scores for the Indian team?

Live scores can be tracked on the official Hockey India website, the FIH (International Hockey Federation) portal, or popular sports news apps like ESPN or Cricbuzz (for multi-sport updates).
