Bill Simmons has watched every superstar in the league this year, but one name stands out above the rest in his mind. While Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is gunning for the MVP trophy, Simmons is planting his flag for Victor Wembanyama as the true best player on the planet right now. On a recent episode of his podcast, the veteran analyst expressed his amazement at the sheer defensive intensity the San Antonio Spurs center provides every night.

“I can’t believe how good Wemby is. How hard he plays, and what an impact he makes on both ends of the floor, especially on defense.” Simmons said, “We were just counting all the shots he changes, changes, or changes the guy’s mind, and it was about 30. He never gives up, he keeps playing hard the whole time. And he has an impact on the game. I thought it was the most impressive thing I’ve seen.”

That defensive motor is a primary reason why the San Antonio Spurs currently sit at 51-18, reaching the 50-win mark for the first time since the 2016-17 season. They currently trail only the Thunder in the high-stakes Western Conference race as the playoffs approach.

The seven-foot-four phenom’s efficiency was on full display during Tuesday night’s emphatic 132-104 win over the Sacramento Kings. Wembanyama didn’t need to break a sweat, finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists in just 22 minutes of action. He hit 7 of 14 shots from the floor and knocked down two triples before being quickly benched.

Simmons acknowledged Gilgeous-Alexander is hovering in the rarefied air of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. However, he still stressed that the impact Vembanyama has had on both ends of the floor represents the most impressive thing he has seen all season. The big man’s ability to control the game without the need for high-volume scoring is what really sets him apart. As the postseason approaches, the debate over best player vs. most valuable player will only intensify.

Liverpool have made links to Hungarian winger Roland Salai, who has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is according to BlickWhich covers the 28-year-old today. The Hungarian outfit are very excited about Salai potentially joining Liverpool, which would be a huge deal for Hungary.

Salai has excelled week in and week out at Galatasaray, even featuring at right-back. His form has attracted the interest of several major clubs, but Liverpool could emerge as the ‘real suitors’ among them.

The Turkish press now regularly refers to him as the ‘Hungarian Cristiano Ronaldo’ due to his technical ability and physical presence. Observers keep a close eye on his every move, on and off the pitch.

Salai also impressed the crowd with his performance in the 5-2 win over Juventus in the Champions League last week. Talk of some big step is definitely increasing.

Liverpool earning ‘special attention’

Liverpool is earning ‘special attention’ from Hungary as one of those potential destinations. They are already home to Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez, Salai’s teammates at international level.

Having a third star at Anfield would certainly be a pleasure for the country, and that has been evident in Hungary. The Reds could do with a reliable right-back after their problems with that position this season.

There is no mention of transfer fees or effort at this point. But the Reds’ potential interest in Salai is not going unnoticed in his homeland.

Why the possibility of transfer – from the player’s father

His father is certainly ready to give a positive recommendation if the Liverpool people want it.

“I’ve always been proud of my son, because, and I say this without prejudice, he’s a very good kid.” Tibor Salai told the newspaper.

“As a father, it is an uplifting feeling to experience this. But my son also tries his best to be loved. Whatever position he is put in, he performs well.”

“At this level, there is no choice. As a professional footballer, he has to do what the coach says. Even though Rollie has special striker qualities, he has to give his maximum as a right-back.

“Roly feels good here, he loves the club, he doesn’t want to leave at any cost, but I think there is still another big step left in his career, a very big club.

“From here, he can only sign for a team that is really one of the top teams in the world. Liverpool could be one such destination, and I admit, if this club change were to happen now, in the winter, I would not be surprised.

“I know that contact has already been made through the management office.

“I don’t want to shout anything, but my son will have a really good chance in the summer. If there is a proposal that is also beneficial for Galatasaray to change the country and the level.

“It would be no ordinary moment if Liverpool took to the Anfield Road pitch with three Hungarians in the starting lineup.”

Dominic Szoboszlai is a huge star in Hungary, with his recent Liverpool free-kick hitting the front pages and earning him comparisons to David Beckham.

Adding a third from the country’s national team would be huge for Hungary and would give Liverpool even more fans in the country.

Still recovering from last season’s ACL injury, many expected Kyrie Irving to return to the field this time around. It looks like he is putting the brakes on returning for this season and recently announced that he will be sitting out the entire year.

According to Joey Mistretta of Clutch Points, Irving wrote a statement regarding the decision.

“This decision was not easy, but it is the right one. I am grateful to the Mavericks organization, my teammates and our fans for their continued support throughout the process,” Irving wrote. “I’m looking forward to coming back stronger next season. The confidence and enthusiasm I have is only growing.

“And I want to say a big thank you to all of my brothers and sisters who have torn ACLs or been injured doing the work they love to do every day. Thank you for the inspiration. No fear!”

Irving’s agent, Shetalia Riley Irving, told ESPN that this will help the Mavericks guard return to full strength next season.

“It’s about being 1000% when Kyrie comes back and giving ourselves the best chance to chase a championship next season,” Riley Irving said, via Shams Charania.

With the Mavericks at the bottom of the Western Conference standings and beginning to build the team around Cooper Flagg, Irving didn’t have much need to rush. Had they been fighting for a playoff spot, things probably would have been different, and he would have bounced back around the time he should have.

Sitting out the entire season gives Irving more time to get back to the player he was before the injury, which is one of the most dangerous scoring point guards out there. It will be interesting to see what he looks like when he returns next season.
