While it seems like the entire basketball world knows that Tyrese Maxey is the best player on the Philadelphia 76ers, Nick Nurse clearly doesn’t, and his decision to let his veteran lead in Game 3 vs. the New York Knicks may cost him his job next week.

Still, Nurse had the horses to pull out a win and escape a 3-0 hole, especially with Joel Embiid back on the field.

There’s no doubt the 76ers are in a better position with Embiid on the floor. The seven-time All-Star commands respect on both sides of the court, even in this diminished version. However, the 2025-26 season confirmed an undeniable fact: Maxi is and should always be the No. 1 option on offense. Yet somehow the Sixers head coach hasn’t gotten the memo.

In addition to being the fifth-highest per-game scorer in the NBA this season, Nurse had enough evidence to focus on Maxey in Game 3, especially against the Knicks. The two teams split their four games during the regular season, and Games 1 and 2 of this series were very different.

With Embiid being the focal point in the opener, he got blown out for 40 points. With Embiid sidelined and Maxey moving on, Game 2 was close the entire time, and over-utilization of its starters was likely the difference between victory and defeat on Wednesday. Paul George looked like he was 36 as he led the team with 18 shots, Embiid had 17 and Kelly Oubre — who averaged just 10 a game during the season — tallied 16 on Friday. Maxi had 12 shots in Game 3.

Furthermore, it was clear that neither George nor Embiid were on a heater at halftime, as they were both outscored by Oubre on Friday as he led the 76ers with 22 points in a 108-94 loss to the Knicks in Game 3.

It’s baffling that as soon as the Knicks took control of the game in the second quarter, Nurse did not pull his team to the bench and demand an offensive run through Maxi, their best player and scorer.

Maxi can certainly take some blame for not asserting himself and demanding the ball. But he’s still only 25, and it’s no surprise he’d take on a pair of NBA greats in a big game. This is where Nurse must show the courage and leadership to engage his veterans in this instance to do what is best for the team.

Nurse was already feeling some heat in his third season as head coach of the 76ers. However, his coaching in Game 3 proves that – barring a history-breaking comeback to win this series – he is not the guy to take this team to the next level and will be out as head coach next week.

He admitted that he sometimes faints after games, which is quite normal for a young player like him.

James, 41, has a renowned work ethic. The proof is clear: their longevity. There are many stories about how the four-time MVP takes care of his body.

This decision was very good for Maxi. Although it took some time for him to find his feet, the 76ers guard eventually became one of the best guards in the league. He was named to his second All-Star Game this season and has been a key player for the 76ers alongside Joel Embiid. This season, Maxi is averaging 29 points per game while making 37.1% of his three-point attempts, as well as 4.1 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game.

The comments came after the 76ers’ 106-102 win over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. Despite missing several key contributors, the 2026 NBA All-Star helped direct the offense while the rotation relied on role players to close out the win.

76 people are stuck in two timelines

The 76ers worked hard to keep the selection that ultimately became VJ Edgecombe, and now, they have a skilled backcourt to build the team around. The problem, however, is that there remains a lot of uncertainty surrounding Embiid’s health, and George’s drug-related suspension has cast another cloud over the team.

Be that as it may, if Embiid and George are ultimately completely gone, the 76ers can at least have an easier time rebuilding around Maxey and Edgecombe.

“I don’t think we’re considering it. … [But] It’s a business at the end of the day. I have seen a lot of people trading, but I don’t want to trade. You can’t pay attention to that,” Maxie said.

The 76ers could use Jared McCain right now

The reasoning behind the 76ers’ decision to trade McCain isn’t so hard to understand. They had a lot of guard depth, and with Maxey established as the main guard option for the team and VJ Edgecombe alongside him, McCain was going to perform best as the sixth man for the team.

Nonetheless, the 76ers have contending aspirations, and McCann, a guard who shoots well from beyond the arc, could help ease their depth concerns. Instead, they now have to look at McCann as another talented guard following in the footsteps of Isaiah Joe who they lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Miami Heat 124-117 on Thursday night. In the win, Maxey led all Sixers players with 28 points, although was a poor 9 of 25 from the floor. Nevertheless, the 76ers guard made history by surpassing Allen Iverson for most triples made in franchise history.

Entering the game, he had made 882 triples in his career, three less than Iverson. He knocked down five of them in the win, making 5 of 12 from deep, including four in the first quarter.

After the win, Maxey shared his thoughts on surpassing Iverson.

“Honestly, it’s just a blessing. I’m so happy, man. I’m blessed,” Maxi said humbly.

Maxi will have the opportunity to continue adding to his franchise record. Especially considering that the six-year veteran signed a five-year, $204 million contract through the summer of 2024. That deal locks him in Philadelphia through the 2028-29 campaign.

Even after Maxey threw a large poster at Edwards, he remained relaxed and smiling, showing no frustration towards the rising 76ers star.

Maxi performed exceptionally well despite the absence of Joel Embiid and a Paul George-less 76ers team, with neither star taking the court.

Edwards scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but Maxey’s game-high 39 points led Philadelphia to a dominant win over Minnesota.

Rudy Gobert sat out due to a one-game suspension, and Nazi Reed missed the game with a shoulder injury, leaving Minnesota shorthanded.

Edwards and Maxey would meet once again on April 3 for the last regular season game between Minnesota and Philadelphia.

Even after the viral dunk and the tough loss, Edwards remains a must-watch player at just 24 years old. Whether he is underrated can be debated, but there is no doubt that he is one of the top talents in the game.

“It’s going to take a lot. You know what I mean. As soon as you dig yourself a hole, only America can get out of it. You know what I mean? Like we’re in this thing together?
