On Saturday night, the UFC returned to Mexico City with a card headlined by national darling and former flyweight king Brandon Moreno. Heading into his contest with short-notice replacement Lon’er Kavanagh, he was a big favourite. However, after five tough fights, the English prospect stunned Mexican fans with a huge upset victory over their favorite fighter.

Let’s see how Kavanaugh forced some big changes in our latest UFC flyweight rankings.

10. Loner Kavanaugh (10-1)

Despite a 3-1 record in the UFC, England’s Lon’er Kavanagh has earned a spot in our latest UFC flyweight rankings. That’s thanks to a huge upset win over division stalwart Brandon Moreno in March. The 26-year-old arrived at short notice and had to adjust to the high altitude of Mexico City, yet it didn’t matter as he secured a career-defining victory over the former champion in his hometown.

Former M1 and Brave CF star Asu Almabayev enters the UFC riding a streak of 13 consecutive wins. He extended his hot streak inside the Octagon by winning his first four fights and scoring victories over top 15 fighters Matthias Nicolau and Odd Osbourne. Unfortunately, when they took a big step forward in the competition against Manel Cape in March, they suffered their first defeat in eight years.

However, he has bounced back from the setback with two wins, including a big submission win over top-15 veteran Alex Perez in November.

8. Amir Albazi (17-3)

Amir Albazi was one of the hottest fighters in the 125-pound division heading into a November 2024 showdown with former champion Brandon Moreno. He had won six in a row, including over top-10 fighter Kai Cara-France. Unfortunately, Moreno showed that there are many levels to this game and he soundly defeated the Iraq native.

Due to injuries, “The Prince” sat on the sidelines for over a year and finally made his return in February. But he faced more difficult fate when he faced Kyoji Horaguchi and was again outmatched by a faster and more intelligent fighter. Albazi’s dreams of a title fight in early 2026 are looking bleak.

7. Brandon Royval (17-9)

Brandon Royval has quietly been one of the best 125-pound fighters in the world for quite some time. Although he has fallen short in some big fights, he has some impressive wins, including a victory over former division king Brandon Moreno.

However, fighting the best comes with constant risk. At UFC 317, he accepted the challenge of rising star Joshua Van and surprisingly lost to the 23-year-old. Then, in December, he headlined a UFC Fight Night card against dangerous striker Manel Cape and was on the wrong end of the first knockout loss of his career.

6. Brandon Moreno (22-10-2)

Few flyweights have been better than Brandon Moreno. He has been involved in some of the greatest fights in the history of the division and is a two-time champion. However, for all legends there comes a father’s time and he has been looking over the Mexican’s shoulder in recent years.

Moreno was 3-2 heading into the matchup against potential loanee Kavanaugh in his home country and needed a win to stay in title contention. Unfortunately, he was on the wrong end of a stunning upset in Mexico City. There is a real possibility that this was the last time fans saw Moreno in the Octagon.

5. Kyoji Horiguchi (36-5)

Since leaving the UFC nearly a decade ago, Kyoji Horiguchi has had a stellar run outside the company and has long been viewed as the best flyweight outside of the UFC. In November 2025, the former dual Rizin and Bellator champion made his triumphant return to the promotion with an impressive decision win over Tagir Ulanbekov.

The Japanese star returned in February and faced a tough test from Amir Albazi. However, he once again defeated one of the better flyweights in the world. After his latest win, Horiguchi could be one win away from a title shot in 2026.

4. Manel Cape (22-7)

It hasn’t always been easy for Manel Kapp in the UFC, but “Starboy” remains one of the most exciting fighters in the division. In his last eight fights he is 7-1 with five finishes. The biggest flaw in his Octagon resume was the lack of a marquee win. Well, he got it in December.

In a UFC Fight Night headlining role, he defeated top five veteran Brandon Royval and Cape scored a major first round knockout victory. He’s as close as ever to a title shot in 2026.

3. Joshua Vann (16-2) – Champion

Joshua Vann has quietly put in an impressive performance in the Octagon. At UFC 317, he got his big opportunity in a clash with top-five veteran Brandon Royval and earned a hard-fought career-defining decision victory. The win earned the Myanmar native a championship opportunity at UFC 323.

In the card’s co-main event, he became the second youngest champion, but it was bittersweet when Pantoja suffered a non-contact injury to his elbow, leading to an immediate end to the fight in Round 1. He’s the new king of the division, but he didn’t earn the top spot in that fight.

2. Tatsuro Taira (18-1) – Top Contender

It has been a very long time since Japan has had a fighter represent the country at the highest level of the sport. However, former Shooto champion Tatsuro Taira finally has a real chance to become the first UFC champion from the land of the rising sun.

After nine bouts, he is 8–1 with one very narrow loss to Brandon Royal. However, at UFC 323, he potentially pushed himself to a title opportunity in 2026 with a big TKO win over division veteran Brandon Moreno.

1. Alexandre Pantoja (30-6)

Brazil’s Alexandre Pantoja has had a long, difficult journey to become the UFC flyweight king. He worked hard inside the division for several years before finally being able to win a title fight at UFC 290. In his first opportunity to become champion, he performed well by scoring his second (third unofficial) victory over division king Brandon Moreno.

Since then he has been on a steady rise and has earned himself the spotlight as one of the top 125 players of all time. At UFC 317, he extended his win streak to eight consecutive with another dominant victory, this time over Kai Kara-France. Pantoja has a case for being the best flyweight ever not named Demetrious Johnson.

For good measure, he was also a top five pitch framer. Despite the potential for some downside, Raley has a chance to win both a Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award at catcher in 2026.

First base: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is coming off a season where he had a .397 batting average and 1.289 OPS with 29 hits, 15 RBIs and 8 home runs for a team that was one step away from winning the World Series. While his offensive production during the regular season has been a bit sporadic in recent years, he still boasts the highest OPS (.903) and wRC+ (154) among first basemen over the past two seasons, and he tied for fourth-most defensive runs saved at first (eight) last year. He is a superstar who has proven that he can carry a team in the postseason.

Second base: Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks

At a time when second base is thinner and weaker than in years past, Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star hitter Ketel Marte is setting the standard for the position. After winning the NLCS MVP in 2023, he has earned an All-MLB First Team selection and a Silver Slugger Award in each of the last two seasons at second base. That’s thanks to a spot-leading 147 wRC+, .911 OPS, 143 RBIs and 54 home runs along with the second-best batting average (.287) and third-highest walk rate (11.7 percent) over that two-year span.

Shortstop: Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City Royals

It didn’t take long for Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. to prove he was one of the best MLB players. He showed glimpses of it in his first two seasons, but MVP-caliber play occurred the last two years. As of 2024–25, Witt has won a Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award at shortstop both seasons, and it came with All-Star nods and an All-MLB First Team selection. Among all shortstops over the past two years, Witt ranks first in batting average (.312), wRC+ (150) and OPS (.915), with the third-most home runs (55) and second-most runs (220) and stolen bases (68).

Third base: Jose Ramirez, Cleveland Guardians

Jose Ramirez is the gold standard at third base right now. The Cleveland Guardians star has won six Silver Slugger awards, made the All-Star Game seven times, and has been named to the All-MLB First Team at third base each of the past two seasons. Even as a 32-year-old in 2025, he hit 30 home runs with 103 runs batted in and set career highs in stolen bases (44), along with his highest batting average (.283) over the past five years. Among his teammates at the hot corner over the past two seasons, Ramírez ranks first in runs (184), batting average (.292), wRC+ (147), fWAR (12.4), steals (70) and OPS (.903), and he is second in RBI (174) and home runs (62).

Left field: Juan Soto, New York Mets

The New York Mets are moving Juan Soto to left field for the 2026 season. While this won’t do much to erase the fact that he isn’t good defensively, it does make him a top player in left field now. Still only 27, Soto’s 2019 resume includes a World Series title, an NL batting crown, a Silver Slugger Award in six consecutive seasons and four selections to the All-MLB First Team. He consistently performed like an MVP, posting a 1.005 OPS with 34 home runs and a .282 batting average from June to September, and he is one of four players in all of baseball with over 200 RBIs and over 200 runs scored over the past two years combined.

Center Field: Julio Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners

What’s particularly noteworthy about Julio Rodriguez is that he has boasted a career .800 OPS in his first four seasons despite starting slow almost every year. For whatever reason, the Mariners center fielder starts out cold and then gets hot in the summer. Establishing a .900 OPS with a .290 batting average, 45 RBI, 18 home runs and 13 steals allowed him to earn All-MLB First Team honors in 2025 for the first time in his career. He’s also excellent defensively in center field, and if we ever get a year where he performs well at the plate from April to September, he could make a serious bid for AL MVP.

Right field: Aaron Judge, New York Yankees

Watching New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge play baseball is a treat. He has had better four-year performances than Hall of Famers like Hank Aaron, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mickey Mantle during their best four-year peaks. That’s why Judge has earned three AL MVP awards since the 2022 campaign, including last season when he led the Majors in batting average. Judge is the only player in baseball with more than 250 RBI and more than 250 runs scored over the last two seasons – a stretch where he also leads the game in batting average (.326), walk rate (18.6 percent), home runs (111) and OPS (1.152).

Designated Hitter: Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is likely going to become just the second player in MLB history to win NL MVP in four consecutive seasons. In related news, doing so would put him in special company with Barry Bonds as the only two players in baseball history to win MVP five times. Ohtani has made the All-MLB First Team in six consecutive seasons, and he ranks second in OPS (1.025), wRC+ (176) and home runs (109) over the past two years, along with the third-most RBIs (232) and fourth-most steals (79).

Starting pitcher: Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers

No player has won the AL Cy Young Award in three consecutive seasons. Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal is so good he could make history in 2026. Over the past two seasons, the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner has the second-lowest ERA (2.30), highest fWAR (12.6), second-best strikeout rate (31.2 percent) and K-BB rate (26.7 percent), third-lowest batting average (.199) and lowest WHIP. (0.91) among starters who have played more than 300 innings. There’s a reason he broke the arbitration record ($32 million), and why he’ll eventually become the highest-paid pitcher in baseball history.

Closer: Mason Miller, San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres gave up one of the top prospects in baseball to acquire closer Mason Miller at the 2025 MLB trade deadline. In half a season with the club, he posted a 0.77 ERA and a 54.2 percent strikeout rate in 23.1 innings while allowing a .096 batting average. Over the past two seasons, Miller has boasted a .148 batting average (first in MLB), with the third-lowest WHIP (0.89) and the highest strikeout rate (43.1 percent) among relievers. To put Miller’s 32.9 percent K-BB rate into perspective, that’s the same number as the 13th-highest strikeout rate in MLB over the past two seasons.

Successor Jacob Fowler took the No. 2 spot, a testament to his incredibly encouraging growth.

Note: To qualify for the project, potential candidates must be 23 years of age or younger and currently playing outside the NHL. In other words, even though Canadian players like Len Hutson, Juraj Slafkowski and Ivan Demidov are young enough to qualify by age, they have already established themselves as NHL players and are no longer considered prospects.

2. Goaltender, Catch Left, 21, Laval Rocket (AHL), 6’2″, 214 lbs. Selected 69th overall in 2023.

From the moment Jacob Fowler took over as Boston College’s starting netminder, it was crystal clear that he had the potential to one day become a starting goaltender in the NHL.

Of course, there were some signs pointing to his excellence before the Canadiens selected him in the third round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Fowler was a key figure in the USHL, leading the Youngstown Phantoms to a Clark Cup championship, serving as the team’s Most Valuable Player due to his impressive .952 save percentage.

And yet, there was no guarantee that his play would translate to the NCAAs, as it represented a significant increase in the quality of competition.

Fowler didn’t just embrace college hockey, he quickly established himself as one of the best goaltenders in the country, posting a 25-7-2 record in his second year with the Eagles, including an impressive .940 save percentage.

She was the driving force behind the decision to convince him to sign an entry-level contract, ending his NCAA career after just two years in the league. It should be noted that Fowler was not the first Canadiens netminder to spend just two years in the NCAA. Cayden Primeau and Jacob Dobbs both made their jump to the professional ranks after playing two seasons in college hockey, a reminder that rushing goaltenders carries a certain amount of risk.

That being said, now that we have had the chance to see Fowler play in a professional league, it is safe to say that he has excelled despite his lack of experience, which means he has excelled in every league from the USHL to the NHL.

His 10-game audition with the Canadiens was not perfect, and yet, he provided the team’s best chance to win games with a .902 save percentage. This may not seem like an outstanding result, but when we consider that both Samuel Montembeault (.874) and Jacob Dobbs (.892) have struggled at times due to the increased number of high-danger chances allowed by the Habs each night, not to mention the fact that teams around the league have been scoring more goals in recent years than in previous eras, it turns out that Fowler has found himself in a tough situation. Performed commendably.

To put a fine point on his impressive results, we can also turn to the AHL, where Fowler has emerged as one of the best goaltenders in the league. He has a .915 save percentage, good for sixth overall in the league. This earned the rookie netminder a well-deserved All-Star nod, and added yet another accomplishment to his crowded cap.

Strength

Fowler is extremely boring, which is the biggest compliment one can give a young netminder. He wastes very little energy, using elite anticipation, vision and tracking to ensure he is ready before most shots.

That doesn’t mean he’s immune to being out of position sometimes, but for the most part, Fowler has shown that he can make life very difficult for opposing teams by always being ready to make a save rather than reacting to the situation at the last moment.

This eliminates the most vulnerable position for a goaltender: having to adjust his position while reacting to a shot.

His rebound control is well above average, which became very evident during his short stint in the NHL. Montembeault and Dobbs can both struggle when it comes to maintaining possession of the puck, while Fowler has shown a tendency to squander second-chance opportunities that will plague the Canadiens in 2025-26.

When rebounds were inevitable, Fowler did a great job of redirecting the puck into low-threat scoring areas, once again reducing scoring opportunities for opposing players.

He played every game with the same confidence and mental preparation you’d expect from a 10-year veteran, a good reminder that he has the right type of mentality to thrive in a hockey-mad market like Montreal.

weaknesses

I have closely followed Fowler’s progress since his NCAA debut, and although I believe he is one of the best goaltending prospects I have had the chance to monitor, he does have one Achilles heel.

When the puck goes down, and then quickly gets back into the slot, Fowler’s tracking, which is usually elite, suddenly becomes mediocre. The result is that he sits a little too far back in his net, giving shooters a wide open net to work with.

His lateral change can be awkward at times, but it is an aspect of his game that has improved by leaps and bounds over the past few seasons.

He’s likely to have stretches in which he looks a little overwhelmed, at least when compared to his normal NCAA standard. I would argue that this is a result of playing behind an elite Boston College team for two years, a situation that led to many wins, but a distinct lack in shot volume.

It’s also important to note that I’m looking for nits to bite at the moment.

All of his game’s issues essentially require a simple solution: more experience.

In that sense, Fowler’s biggest weakness is that he is still a rookie netminder, which is not necessarily a weakness, but a realistic assessment of his encouraging development.

What to expect from Fowler moving forward?

All things considered, Fowler clearly has what it takes to become Montreal’s starter after accumulating enough experience, but we should be wary of rushing him into the NHL, especially as the Canadiens head into the final stages of the season.

Yes, Fowler played well during his short stint with the Habs, but there’s something to be said about allowing him to develop in a slightly less pressured situation.

In other words, the AHL is the perfect league for Fowler in 2025-26.

That may not be the case next season, especially with the Habs struggling with goaltending issues, but despite his excellent numbers, the Canadiens can’t risk their long-term potential to solve a short-term issue.

He’s a great goaltending prospect, arguably the best the team has had in decades, and his time will come soon.

However, for now, he is still learning on the job.

The New York Giants have had four selections in the top ten of the NFL draft order over the past four years. Claiming the 5th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Giants are ready to add to that total. Before the Giants add another highly touted prospect, general manager Joe Schoen may be preparing to trade one of his recent picks.

Recently, SNY’s Connor Hughes reported that NFL teams are operating under the belief that Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux is available via trade.

“A name to keep an eye on, Kayvon Thibodaux. Kayvon might be one that’s a little more spendy. At least someone the Giants would be willing to listen to offers. Teams I’ve talked to around the NFL combine believe he’s available at the right price.”

This should come as no big surprise to Giants fans, as Thibodaux has been linked to trade rumors since the time Abdul Carter was selected third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Still, after an 11.5-sack season in 2023, a lot of teams will be eager to see if they can get Thibodeaux to consistently produce at a high level. He has recorded a total of eight sacks in the last 22 games.

With the Giants’ commitments to Brian Burns and Carter, they don’t need another high-profile pass-rusher like Thibodeaux. Other teams will definitely give him a chance to compete for the starting role. That opportunity is not currently available in New York.

The Giants have seven selections in the upcoming draft, but with only selections Nos. 5 and 37, they will only add two prospects in the top 100 selections. The Thibodaux trade could help add another valuable contributor to the Giants’ draft class.

Marvin Bagley’s idea came up in the discourse surrounding the Dallas Mavericks’ trade return for Anthony Davis. However, the former No. 2 pick has impressed the Mavericks during his first game since the blockbuster deal.

Bagley had his most efficient performance of the season during Tuesday’s 123-124 win over the Brooklyn Nets. The 6-foot-10 big man posted a team-high 22 points and five rebounds on 10 of 13 shooting in 20 minutes off the bench.

Jason Kidd said of Bagley’s performance, “He’s a really good player.” Talking to him revealed that he has grown up and understands the NBA game a little. Sometimes it takes time. We all want it to happen overnight. But I think the coaching staff, the media, everybody that’s been on this road trip with him has made him comfortable, and you can see how he’s playing. If it’s not in the post, it’s an offensive rebound, and then playing defense for us. So everyone’s confidence is high, and he’s brand new, and it just shows how talented he is.”

Bagley has not been able to find a home in the NBA since being selected No. 2 by the Sacramento Kings in 2018, ahead of Luka Doncic, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Trae Young.

Mavericks’ Bagley makes headlines during first game with Mavs after Anthony Davis trade

The former Duke star changed teams six times during his eight-year NBA career. After spending his first three seasons with the Kings, he saw stints with the Detroit Pistons, Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards before landing in Dallas at this year’s trade deadline.

While Bagley has had a disappointing career, he is making the most of his new opportunity with the rebuilding Mavericks. With Derek Lively sidelined, the 26-year-old is averaging 13.0 points and 8.2 rebounds on 64.3 percent shooting in five appearances with the team.

“Just keep building,” Bagley said of his mindset after Tuesday’s win. “It’s just continuing to learn each other, at least for me and the new guys. Just continuing to gel with the guys that are here, learning the system, and just doing my best every day and giving it my all. That’s my mentality, and it seems like everyone else here has the same mentality. I love being a part of it, and I’m glad I have teammates like that.”

After the Orlando Magic bounced back from a double-overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns with a two-point win (111-109) over the LA Clippers, Anthony Black discussed the keys to his team securing a top-six seed in the Eastern Conference. The New York Knicks made a strong comeback against the Houston Rockets and won. He displayed serious composure, which was in question in the previous defeat. Additionally, Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson both played incredibly well – something that could have been expected on a regular basis early in the season, and yet something that hasn’t been seen nearly enough. But while the win should inspire optimism, the reason for the pause is the Detroit Pistons.

New York played a great fourth quarter in its recent win against Houston. They finished the game on a 33–13 run, which included Brunson’s 18 points. The Knicks also held the Rockets to 28% shooting in the final 10 minutes of the game. And their defense, led by new addition Jose Alvarado, forced several changes.

The Knicks have played well against more top teams than the Rockets. The Knicks have performed incredibly well against most of the league’s top competition this season. They are now 1-0 against Houston, 2-1 against Boston Celtics, 2-0 against Cleveland Cavaliers, 1-0 against Denver Nuggets, 1-0 against Los Angeles Lakers and 1-1 against San Antonio Spurs.

However, they have struggled mightily against the Pistons, a team they will likely see in the 2026 playoffs. In fact, New York is 0-3 against Detroit on the season, and their next matchup is scheduled for (much) later in the season.

Are the Pistons too tough for the Knicks?

If the Pistons are a more physical team, which they are, the Knicks should emphasize their strength, finesse, and finesse. Although Curtis Blaydes has had some very tough losses in his career, he has remained a top-five tier heavyweight for most of the last decade. At UFC 299, he finally got a chance to make up for his big fight mistakes and he did so in a big way when he handed Zelton Almeida his first defeat in the Octagon.

As we continue our in-depth profile series of the top Montreal Canadiens prospects, as voted by Habs fans, we’ve reached one of the organization’s most interesting young players: Laval Rocket forward Florian Zekaj.

Note: To qualify for the project, potential candidates must be 23 years of age or younger and currently playing outside the NHL. In other words, even though Canadian players like Len Hutson, Juraj Slafkowski and Ivan Demidov are young enough to qualify, they have already established themselves as NHL players and are no longer considered prospects.

9. LW/Center, Shoots Left, 21, Laval Rocket (NCAA), 6’4″, 205 lbs. Selected 101st overall in 2023.

When the Montreal Canadiens selected Florian Czekaj early in the fourth round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, many eyebrows were raised.

Statistically speaking, a player who has scored only 25 points in 68 OHL games is not eligible for a draft pick, nor is he expected to ever make his way to the NHL.

But as we found out in Montreal, Zekaj doesn’t live up to expectations.

For example, Florian’s brother Arbor was the only defenseman in modern NHL history to make the jump directly from the OHL to the NHL after being passed over in the draft.

It was a sign of things to come, as Florian not only defied expectations, he defied expectations after his first season of professional hockey.

Szekaj managed to score 24 goals and 11 assists in 69 games as a rookie, while spending most of his time on the Laval Rocket’s fourth line. It wasn’t just an impressive feat, it set a franchise record for goals by a rookie skater.

Of course, we have to be realistic about his increased shooting percentage, which stood at 25% all year, but the fact is that Czekaj not only proved the doubters wrong, but he quickly moved himself up the Montreal Canadiens’ prospect list due to his unique combination of skill and toughness.

Goals have become a little harder to come by in his sophomore season, as his shooting percentage has returned somewhat to normal, up to 12.5%. Czekaj also spent some time in Montreal after a call-up by the Canadiens, adding another hurdle when it comes to maintaining a certain level of consistency.

Czekaj only played five games with the Habs during that call up, limiting his opportunities to make an impact, but it’s fair to say he didn’t look out of place in the NHL, especially when we consider he still has two full years of professional hockey left to complete.

Strength

While players who don’t hesitate to get into a scuffle are usually labeled as hooligans or one-trick ponies, that’s certainly not the case with Zekaj.

Just ask reigning AHL Coach of the Year, Pascal Vincent.

He uses Zekaj when the Rockets need a goal, when they want to protect a late-game lead, on the power play, on the penalty kill, and every other possible situation that occurs in a hockey game.

He’s actually the Canadian-Albanian-Kosovan-Czech army knife of the team. And whenever an opposing player takes advantage of one of Zekaj’s teammates, the knife turns into a hammer.

He will score most of his goals by gaining precious ice in the offensive zone, taking advantage of rebounds or putting himself in good position to deflect point shots, although he has scored a few times by beating goaltenders with clean shots.

Once again, versatility is clearly one of his greatest strengths.

weaknesses

Zekaj is an old-school player in a new-school sports landscape, with a variety of penalties to contend with. In fact, he led the AHL in penalty minutes during his rookie season, with 175 PIM to his name. This is par for the course when discussing a rough-and-tumble player, and Czekaj would not be as effective if he played a more restrained brand of hockey, but there is always a learning process when it comes to adapting to umpiring in different leagues.

There may be a certain lack of discipline in the AHL, but it is one of the least desirable traits in the NHL. Zekaj will have to choose his positions a little more carefully going forward.

There is some work to do when it comes to his skating mechanics, although I would argue he is not a bad skater. Rather, his first few steps are awkward, giving the impression that he is not moving very fast.

To avoid relying on increased shooting percentage, Zekaj could also stand to improve his overall shot rate. On that note, he is taking 1.7 shots per game this year, which is a significant increase compared to the 1.3 shots per game during his rookie season.

What to expect from Zekaj moving forward

After reading his profile, you may be wondering why Szekaj is not currently playing in the NHL.

It’s true that he has performed much better than anyone expected, however, so we should avoid including Czekaj in the Canadiens’ lineup. He has done everything the team has asked of him, and more, but there is something to be said about allowing players to develop with some consistency in their usage.

The AHL is an ideal developmental league for a player like Czekaj, at least for the time being, even if he is already well ahead of the normal curve in terms of his NHL aspirations.

His playing style, impressive work ethic and all-around skill set should eventually earn him a long-term role in the NHL, possibly on the fourth line, though we’re not at that level yet.

Flemings, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Virginia, is the fifth-ranked prospect on ESPN’s latest big board. The 19-year-old is a dynamic athlete who consistently pressures the paint and is solid as a jump shooter, finisher and passer.

They say time heals all wounds, but there are some rivalries that take longer than others to get over, and that was certainly the case when discussing the Canadiens and Boston Bruins.

In 1964, the Canadiens traded with the Bruins to acquire the rights to a 16-year-old goaltender named Ken Dryden. In return, they sent two players to the Bruins: Paul Reed and Guy Allen.

Dryden became one of the best players in league history, while neither Reed nor Allen ever suited up for an NHL game. From that point until the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, the Canadiens and Bruins completed a total of three trades.

A few months after the Dryden trade, Montreal acquired Orval Tessier for cash, but once the Bruins learned of their franchise-altering impropriety in the Dryden trade, relations between the organizations broke down, as evidenced by the fact that the next trade occurred in 2001, when the Canadiens traded Eric Weinreich for Patrick Travers.

It should be noted that he battled mononucleosis to begin the 2025–26 season, causing him to miss the Canadiens rookie camp. This led to a relatively slow start to the year, but he then improved his play, scoring 14 goals and 16 assists in 43 games for the Rockets. This represents a 25% increase in scoring compared to the previous season.

But Poupanekis is a good skater, full stop.

This allows him to quickly drive the net and stake a claim, something he was specifically asked to work on after the Canadiens drafted him in 2025. This is the same directive the team gave to 2022 prospect Owen Beck, pointing to the organization’s desire to add players who not only have an interesting skill level, but who can also survive the rigors of professional hockey once they’re ready to take the biggest jump in their careers.

“Being 6’5 inches, I’m a big guy, I want to play big,” Poupanekis explained. “That’s the biggest thing for me this year, playing big, being open around the puck.”
