of ipswich Long-standing interest in Orlando Gil has come back into the spotlight after the Paraguay goalkeeper's excellent performances at the World Cup.

Latest reports suggest the Premier League newcomers remain firmly in the race for his signature.

Gill has been one of the revelations of the tournament in North America. San Lorenzo's goalkeeper was named the highest-rated goalkeeper of the group stage in FIFA's official power rankings. Additionally, he further enhanced his reputation by saving two penalties against Germany to send Paraguay to the last 16 of the World Cup.

According to reports from Paraguayan outlet double yellow and argentina infobaeIpswich are one of the clubs following the 26-year-old closely. Torino are also monitoring his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Italian side are considering a new goalkeeper and Gil is reportedly valued at between €5m and €6m (£4.3m-£5.2m). However, interest from Premier League clubs predates the Serie A side's involvement.

Ipswich Town revive long-term interest

The latest claims revive a story that first surfaced last year. Ipswich were heavily linked with Gill during the last transfer window. At the time, reports suggested they were prepared to pay around €6m (£5.2m).

That move ultimately failed to come to fruition, but the goalkeeper's remarkable World Cup campaign has now put him back on the club's radar.

There has been movement behind the scenes too. Journalist andres rolan In June, reports came that Gill had changed agents. Now, he is represented by Creer Group, an agency headed by former Argentina international Javier Saviola.

At the time, the expectation was already that the possibility of European transfers would increase after the World Cup.

San Lorenzo may have little choice

Orlando Gil remains under contract with San Lorenzo until December 2027, but the Argentine club's financial problems could become a major factor in any negotiations.

The Buenos Aires side only have 50% of the goalkeeper's financial rights. Nevertheless, they are still in need of new income as they prepare for a new era under manager Néstor Gorosito.

Gill's value has increased throughout the tournament. As well as being recognized as the best goalkeeper of the group stage, he made 17 saves before the knockout rounds. Additionally, he has changed his reputation from the penalty spot.

Earlier in his career he had failed to save any of his first 17 penalties. He has now stopped four of his last 24 starts, including three in shootout situations.

This improvement is attracting attention from across Europe, but at the moment Ipswich look to be in a good position after tracking Gill long before the World Cup success.

Whether they decide to convert that long-standing praise into a formal bid will depend on how far Paraguay's impressive performances take them.
