Arizona coyotes have long been missing from the desert. But one of the most plugged-in insiders in Phoenix has responded with disbelief that the Toronto Maple Leafs will hire former Coyotes executive John Chayka as their new general manager.

John Gambadoro watched the surprise news conference introducing Chayka in Toronto and posted on Twitter.

Spectacular. Chayka here (in Phoenix) was a complete fraud. The fraud cost the Coyotes their first- and second-round selections. Exit the team just before the bubble. Stab Don Maloney in the back to get the job here. The way he treated (veteran Coyotes player) Shane Doan was disgusting – he wanted him gone – he wouldn’t even consider letting him play on the third line last year – just jealous of him. The tea is fake. (Leafs Alumni Tie) His connection to Domi is what is getting him this job.

Chayka was the youngest GM in NHL history when he got the Coyotes job in 2016 at just 26 years old. He was gone after four years, and some of his violations not only cost the Yotes draft picks, but commissioner Gary Bettman also suspended him for a year.

But Gambadoro did not stop there. He listed Chayka’s brutal drafting record during his stay in Arizona. He passed over some elite players when handling team’s NHL draft selections.

And Maple Leafs fans don’t look at their past drafts – while they did draft (Clayton) Keller, let’s not forget 2017 when they took Pierre-Olivier Joseph over Jake Oettinger and Jason Roberton or 2018 when they took Barrett Heaton and passed on Quinn Hughes, Evan Bouchard and Noah Dobson. 2019 you ask – we got Victor Soderstrom but could have had Matt Boldy, Cole Caulfield, Thomas Hartley, Connor McMichael or Shane Pinto… Enjoy Toronto, their draft was horrible!!!!

Gamboa certainly doesn’t paint a rosy picture for Chayka’s draft decisions. However, to be fair, five other teams also passed on Quinn Hughes, while two other teams passed on Bouchard after taking Hughes (nine teams total), and 11 teams passed on Dobson. A year earlier, in 2017, no fewer than 25 teams advanced beyond Oettinger, while Jason Robertson didn’t even get past the second round.

Certainly, no GM has a perfect drafting record. Far away from. But it’s clear that Chayka’s time in Arizona was not a success. Or all the above boards.

Many other people in the game are also trashing the Leafs for their new front office hire. And they’re still continuing to pile on as the press corps is officially introduced.

But the proof, as they say, will be in the pudding. Chayka has now grown up 10 years since her days in Phoenix. He’s learned some lessons the hard way (or at least from MLSE) expectations He’s learned), and we’ll have to sit back and see how things unfold.

But there are definitely some nervous nerves around Leafs Nation. Insider Chris Johnson described Monday’s press conference as “uncomfortable.”

Simply put, Jacob Dobbs was clearly the team’s MVP, as evidenced by the fact that he stopped 181 of 196 shots sent his way, good for a .923 save percentage, well above his regular-season save percentage of .901. It’s also worth noting that he faced 80 high-danger scoring chances, which is a testament to his ability to make a big save when the Canadiens needed it most.

Dobbs may have less experience than most NHL goaltenders, but he gave the Canadiens the confidence they needed to contend for long periods in which the Lightning dominated, which equates to a veteran presence in net.

Montreal Canadiens Best of the Rest

With six points in seven games, not only did Lane Hutson co-lead the Canadiens in scoring with Nick Suzuki, but he also reminded us that he’s not done setting the tone for his NHL career yet.

We already knew he was a dominant presence in the regular season, but it quickly became clear that he had even more to offer in the playoffs.

When it comes to Montreal’s battle fleet, Hutson is a rising tide that lifts all ships.

Everyone will say Dobbs but I’m picking Hutson. He’s a rock star on defense, he changes games if you look at his minutes.

Given that the Habs lacked much of a sustained attack at 5v5 from their first line, they relied on a range of players to complement their offensive contributions.

You would be hard-pressed to find a particular depth forward who excelled, as there were several excellent options, including power forward Josh Anderson. He scored the first two goals of the series at 5v5, and his physical play set the tone against an incredibly attractive Lightning lineup.

Habs fans were also quite pointed to the excellent play of the third line, who was actually used as a second line or possibly fourth line at various times in the series. Regardless, the play of Alexandre Texier, Kirby Dach and Zachary Bolduc was key to overcoming the lack of attack from the first line.

As far as defensemen not named Hutson go, Canadiens fans raved about Arbor Zekaj, and although he did not dress for Game 7, it’s fair to say he performed very well in his limited usage against Tampa Bay.

With Szekaj on the ice, the Habs controlled 57% of the shots at 5v5, a significant feat when we remember the Canadiens were ahead by a large margin (316-260). Full marks to Jaden Struble, who served as Zekaj’s defensive partner for much of the series, as he also produced elite numbers on the third pairing.

There was one member of the organization who did not score a single goal, or provide an assist. He could not manage to score even a single hit.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

And yet, Habs fans wanted to make sure head coach Martin Saint-Louis received recognition for the first-round win.

The 37-year-old struggled to produce during the 2025-26 NHL season, but he should be better next year.

Panthers get a new backup goalie for Bobrovsky

If the Panthers bring back Bobrovsky, he will be the only main goaltender on the roster at this time. Daniil Tarasov is scheduled to become a free agent; However, the team would not bring him back in this scenario. (4) Los Angeles Lakers vs. (1) Oklahoma City Thunder

There’s still no timeline for Luka Doncic’s return, so we’re assuming he won’t play in the Western Conference Semifinals. For the Los Angeles Lakers, that means relying on 41-year-old LeBron James, as he averaged nearly 40 minutes per game alongside Austin Reaves against Houston. Not only do the Oklahoma City Thunder have NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the best player in basketball at the moment, but they rarely turn it over as a team (12.0, second lowest in the NBA) and they are excellent defensively. The Lakers’ lack of shooting and bucket-getters will be immediately exposed in this series, and it will be over quickly.

Anthony Edwards’ injury certainly makes this series more interesting. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons both barely survived the first round, so there should be no rest vs. rust debate for the Eastern Conference Semifinal matchup. What Cleveland brings to the table is the All-Star guard tandem of Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, each of whom is capable of taking over a game. However, there are two issues for the Cavaliers. First, Detroit can bring defensive intensity and offensive scheme to both Mitchell and Harden. More importantly, while Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley are very good veterans, Pistons centers Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart bring far more physicality. We don’t think Cleveland has the toughness or consistency to win this series.

(7) Philadelphia 76ers vs. (3) New York Knicks

The New York Knicks are probably the best team left in the Eastern Conference. That said, the Philadelphia 76ers are playing underdogs and there’s nothing Joel Embiid would love more than to eliminate the Knicks to punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference Finals. Where New York may run into a little trouble is the fact that Embiid may be a stopper against Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges isn’t bringing anything offensively. Philadelphia could pull off another upset if everyone stays healthy, but it’s far from certain and New York has better answers for Embiid than Boston. Ultimately, the deeper and more defensive-minded team advances.

And then there’s Kieron Crawford, the Day 2 defensive end pick. Crawford told a story this weekend that you can’t script. After the Raiders called his name, his agent immediately called Mendoza. Not the head coach. Not GM. Quarterback. Just to check in.

“Once my name was called, I said, ‘You know what, I plan on being with a lot of good people,'” Crawford said with a smile.

That tells you something about Mendoza’s reputation around the league before he took an NFL snap. And that tells you something about what kind of person the Raiders have hired to be the face of the franchise.

Newbies aren’t just turning out at 5pm and going their separate ways. Mendoza and Zuhn both mentioned that offensive players are continuing playbook walkthroughs in the team hotel after practice. The Friday night under-centre session was clearly the beginning.

“There are times when we’re just sitting in the hot tub, in the cold tub just messing around,” Zuhn said. “But when it’s work time, it’s work time and everyone knows it.”

The Carolina Hurricanes are no strangers to the heated competition of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, nor are they unfamiliar with the vice grip-like pressure of their opponents’ passionate fan bases. However, Saturday was a step into uncharted territory with an in-depth statement from an unexpected source.

On May 2, immediately after Game 1, a new episode of NBC Sports Philadelphia’s podcast, flyers talkBroadcast. In it, Flyers television play-by-play announcer Jim Jackson, Flyers reporter and host Ashlyn Sullivan, and reporter Jordan Hall reflect on the opening second-round series with the Hurricanes, and discuss what will be needed in the upcoming games.

However, to Jackson, a taboo topic was brought up that sounded like a call to injure Hurricanes goaltender Frederick Anderson.

Jackson said, “You have to get into Freddy Andersen’s grill; he’s not a goaltender who likes that stuff – he also gets injured by contact.” “I’m not saying ‘Go ahead, try to hurt him’, but if there is physical contact, there’s a possibility he could get hurt.”

Kairi Sane has not severed her ties with WWE yet.

Brian Alvarez reports that within WWE, there is belief that Sane could appear this Saturday at Backlash in Tampa, Florida to provide some resolution to her ongoing storyline with IYO SKY and Asuka, despite being exempt from the company’s WrestleMania 42 roster cuts. Whether such an appearance would be a one-off or signal something else has not been made clear.

“Within WWE, it is felt that there is a greater than 50% chance that Kairi will appear at Backlash to at least finish that storyline,” Alvarez wrote to his subscribers on X.

A singles match between Sky and Asuka is scheduled for Saturday’s Backlash PLE at Amalie Arena in Tampa. Before her release, Sane was at the center of the storyline of that match, torn between the two as Asuka attempted to intimidate her into proving her loyalty to SKY.

Her absence from that program’s resolution was one of the more puzzling aspects of her release, and the internal belief that she might still appear in Backlash shows just how incomplete the creative thread is.

Sane was among the 25 talents released by WWE on April 24 during the roster cuts following WrestleMania 42, and given both her level of talent and her active role in the ongoing program, her release was considered one of the more surprising decisions in that wave.

Fan reaction was swift and vocal, with the hashtag VivantCarry flooding social media in the days following the announcement. AJ Styles was among those who publicly stated that he was shocked by the news.

This was Cena’s second stint with WWE. Following her departure in 2021, she spent time in Japan working primarily for Stardom and NJPW before returning to WWE in 2023, winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships with Asuka as the Kabuki Warriors during that second run.

The New Jersey Devils’ decision to trade Sunny Mehta out from under the Toronto Maple Leafs is looking like pure highway robbery, as the Leafs selected John Chayka as their new general manager on Monday.

Mehta was the leading candidate for the GM position in Toronto before the Devils promptly fired Tom Fitzgerald and hired his successor just 10 days later.

A smart move by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) forced Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) to pivot, hiring Chayka as their 19th GM in history and Matt Sundin as senior executive advisor of hockey operations.

The initial announcement shocked the hockey world.

Chayka – a man who hasn’t worked in the NHL since he was suspended by Gary Bettman five years ago to pursue new opportunities around the league despite having three years remaining on his contract – comes in with a controversial background.

Ironically, he was in talks with the same ownership group that hired Mehta over interest in Chayka in 2021.

It is safe to say that it was a learning experience for HBSE.

Chayka’s appointment is being heavily criticized in Toronto. One claim says the Maple Leafs are not acting like a serious hockey team.

This conclusion was reached because the Maple Leafs are heading into one of the most important offseasons in their franchise history – similar to the Devils – and can only come to terms with a manager who has been absent from an NHL front office for the past five years, and a fan favorite without front office experience.

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun told Keith Pelley, “I’ve been in contact with about 20 people who work in the NHL, many of whom are major names we’ll all know.” “One of them supported and the other 19 thought it was a sham. Words like fraudster, liar and salesman were used.”

While the devils went in a different direction. Of course, it’s true that Mehta is a good fit because he was previously in the Devils organization.

However, Mehta’s resume – which landed him the Devils GM position – has earned HBSE a universally A-grade in terms of recruiting.

He helped build the Devils’ hockey analytics department, exposed Jesper Bratt in the 2016 NHL Draft, moved to the Washington Capitals — and also helped build their analytics department before being employed by the Florida Panthers and helping them win two Stanley Cups.

Certainly, Chayka – CEO of JKC Capital, a family-run business that reportedly owns 50 Wendy’s franchises and five Tim Hortons franchises in Ontario and Quebec – has plenty of runway to prove us all wrong.

However, as it stands, the Devils appear to be the adults in the room with home run fare, while the Maple Leafs fanned the flames in Toronto despite their intentions to stop the burning.

Interim Minnesota Vikings general manager Rob Brzezinski spent four of the team’s top five selections in the 2026 NFL Draft on defensive prospects. This comes after the Vikings had the seventh-best defense in points allowed last season.

Their heavy defensive emphasis, spending five of the team’s nine picks on guards, suggests that Minnesota is satisfied with its offense. Although the team has since indicated that it was not their intention to make the top half of the draft so defensive-focused, the results are what they are. DeAndre Hopkins has also expressed interest in reuniting with Kyler Murray in Minnesota. The 29-year-old star will have one year left on his contract and Edmonton will have to make a difficult decision if re-signing seems like a long shot.

In this scenario, Detroit would have to perform at a high level during the 2026–27 NHL season. As of right now, it’s a long shot that McDavid will want to play with the Red Wings. The organization has the longest playoff drought in the NHL, and McDavid looks to compete for the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025 after falling short.

The Edmonton center is unhappy with being eliminated in the first round, so Detroit would not be a viable destination. Therefore, the Red Wings need to put themselves back in a position where superstar players will want to join the team. Right now, Detroit doesn’t have the same appeal as other organizations.

This is the first step in a mission to do business for McDavid. Even if the Red Wings can make a Buffalo Sabres-style jump during the 2026-27 NHL season, McDavid will have to work his way out of becoming a Red Wing.

Connor McDavid must request trade with Detroit as destination

The most important move for the Red Wings is McDavid requesting a trade from the Oilers. It would be almost impossible for Edmonton to trade McDavid without demands or the realization that he won’t be around for long. If McDavid requests a trade or expresses a desire to leave, the Red Wings should be one of the preferred destinations.

It has to do with Detroit becoming an attractive landing spot. All of this becomes irrelevant if the Red Wings miss the 2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, if Detroit can massively improve and become a contender, all of this will change. At that point, McDavid may have more desire to play in Detroit.

Even in this scenario, Detroit wouldn’t be the only team that wants McDavid on their roster. Other organizations will be pushing to acquire the 29-year-old superstar, leading to a bidding war for his services. After all, the same bidding war happened when the Minnesota Wild acquired Quinn Hughes.

The Red Wings did not want to pull the trigger without a long-term contract extension, and they failed to land Hughes. In a scenario where Detroit improves into a Stanley Cup contender, and McDavid requests a trade, the organization would likely need a similar commitment.

Connor McDavid is unlikely to join the Red Wings during his NHL career. However, if all of these scenarios occur, it gives Detroit a chance to land one of the NHL’s biggest superstars.

The 33rd overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft is still just 26 years old, and he has as dynamic an arm as any other option. He also has great size, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds. Lewis hasn’t been accurate enough, but after spending last season on injured reserve following a shoulder injury, we would expect him to be extremely eager to get back on the field and compete. Couldn’t possibly get anything more than a fifth-round pick.

Davis Mills

When CJ Stroud missed three games due to injury, he got a chance to showcase his skills, Mills led the Houston Texans to three inspiring wins. As the Texans’ franchise QB struggled, some even wondered if the 27-year-old former third-round pick should replace Stroud. Given how much he helped the Texans last season, Houston might be hesitant to part ways with him. Still, given that Mills is in the final year of his contract, a trade wouldn’t cost anything more than a third-day pick.

JJ McCarthy

The Vikings will never admit it, but they may be ready to move on from JJ McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Otherwise, the Vikings would not have brought in such a proven player as Kyler Murray, who could now be the team’s franchise QB. McCarthy’s NFL career got off to a rough start after missing his entire rookie season due to a knee injury, but the former first-round pick also displayed elite leadership qualities while making some clutch plays. Either way, the Steelers will be cognizant of the star potential of the 23-year-old former No. 4 overall pick, but they will also need a trade.

Jacoby Brissett

Did Jacoby Brissett experience a career renaissance last season at age 33? This is an interesting question. While he only led the Arizona Cardinals to a 1–11 record, Brissett completed 64.9% of his passes for a career-high 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 12 starts. The former No. 1 overall pick has shown that he fits in excellently in any locker room, but he’s also quite capable. Now 32 years old, Winston has not only matured, he still has one of the strongest arms in the NFL, who will play well on the outside in Pittsburgh.

Still an unsigned free agent, the Steelers may not feel like they have any other options, and barring a trade, Wilson is the best player available.

Retired, Derek Carr was reportedly interested in returning to the NFL this season if he could join a playoff contender. We’d argue the Steelers meet that criteria. However, if he did not retire, he would still be under contract with the New Orleans Saints. However, since they are moving on with Tyler Shaw, it’s possible the Saints will release Carr and allow him to play football again, or perhaps even trade him for a Day 2 or Day 3 pick.
