Kucherov had six points in the first four games but none in the last three. Hegel had only one assist in Games 5–6–7 after scoring six times in the first four. What’s next for Lightning?

This is the most painful of Tampa Bay’s four consecutive first-round losses. The Lightning were largely outplayed in the first three, losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs in six games in 2023 and to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in five games in 2024 and 2025.

Tampa Bay is not expected to make too many changes to a team that has been one of the NHL’s best teams for nearly a decade. Kucherov struggled in the final three games but still had 44 goals and 130 points (and plus-43) in 76 regular season games. Hegel has scored a career-high 36 goals and has at least 30 goals in three of the last four seasons. Vasilevskiy is a Vezina Trophy finalist and is likely to win the award given to the NHL’s best goaltender for the second time.

James and Goncalves showed they have the ability to play higher in the lineup. Moser has become an excellent defender.

One question is whether GM Julien Brisebois can find a way to retain Moser’s teammate Darren Radish, who made just $975,000 in a career year with 22 goals and 70 points. He’ll definitely get a lot of big dollar interest. According to Pukpedia, the Lightning have less than $14 million in cap room next season. How much they will be willing to spend on Radish will be a big question.

Suddenly, the Cincinnati Bengals have shown a willingness to make a big deal. This proved true when Bengals general manager Duke Tobin agreed to send the team’s first-round pick, No. 10 overall, to the New York Giants in exchange for star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.

The Bengals were willing to make the move knowing that Lawrence, a three-time Pro Bowl DT, would make a bigger immediate impact than any player coming into the 2026 NFL Draft class. While Bengal are clearly still looking to win, could another experienced player come in?

One player without a contract, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, recently stated his case to join the Bengals, where he wants to team up with Joe Burrow. Hopkins thinks Burrow is “one of the best.” Hopkins named the Bengals QB’s toughness and his history of leading the team to the Super Bowl in Burrow’s second season in the NFL as reasons for his choice.

While the 33-year-old Hopkins is clearly interested in continuing his football career, there has been no buzz on his market since becoming a free agent.

He has also mentioned interest in reuniting with his former Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray at the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings recently brought in a veteran receiver for a workout, so they’re clearly looking for depth after the NFL Draft as well. Perhaps Hopkins could also be a fit for Minnesota, but he has not expressed any interest yet.

Hopkins spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he caught 22 of 39 targets for 330 yards and two touchdowns. The three-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler hasn’t had a 1,000-yard season since 2023, when he was with the Tennessee Titans.

Clearly still feeling like he has something to prove, the Bengals won’t lose anything by bringing the seven-time 1,000-yard receiver in for a workout. At best, he shows he can be a difference-maker in Cincinnati. If not, the Bengals may feel more confident in the talent they have, confident that their younger options may be better in the long run.

There have been some big developments in and around the Minnesota Vikings since the 2025 NFL season ended. Last year, the Vikings spent $350 million more money on their roster than any other team. It was a complete failure, as the Vikings, who had won 14 games in 2024, only won nine games and did not reach the playoffs in 2025.

The Montreal Canadiens face the Tampa Bay Lightning in a do-or-die Game 7 on Sunday night.

Before puck drop, it was announced that Noah Dobson would return to the lineup and participate in his first game of the playoffs, giving the Habs a huge boost on the blue line. Defenseman Arbor Zekaj was made a healthy scratch to allow for Dobson’s presence in the lineup.

It wasn’t the prettiest game, but the Habs found a way to emerge with a 2-1 victory, and a 4-3 series win in the process.

The Dobbs deserved full points for holding down the fort, but the Lightning ultimately crumbled, a situation that was fairly predictable considering they were the only team interested in taking shots in the second period.

It’s official, the Montreal Canadiens will be participating in more playoff hockey, having won their first round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Canadiens were victorious in Game 7, winning 2–1 against the Bolts, and taking a 4–3 series victory in the process.

This can only be seen as a significant step forward for the organization, as they were clearly the underdogs heading into the series, and yet, they rarely allowed the Lightning to establish a single-goal lead.

They also took the lead in high-danger scoring chances for the majority of the series, which was the driving force behind their first-round win, along with some other factors including Jacob Dobbs’ goaltending and Montreal’s scoring depth.

Next playoff opponent

The Canadiens will face the Buffalo Sabers in the second round of the 2026 NHL playoffs, and given that they finished the regular season with 109 points, three more than the Habs, Buffalo will maintain home-ice advantage in the series.

Buffalo picked up its first-round win by defeating the Boston Bruins 4–1 on Friday, with Alex Tuch (4), Mattias Samuelsson (2), and Zach Benson (2) providing the offense for the Sabres, while David Pastrnak (3) was the only scorer for the Bruins.

The Habs have the wind in the air, but this could turn out to be a very tough series, as Buffalo is a bad matchup from a stylistic standpoint. Montreal and Buffalo split their four-game season series, but there were stretches in which the Sabers defeated the Canadiens by much larger margins.

Sunday’s Wurth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway caused some early chaos due to cautions that took out top drivers like Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell and Joey Logano. On a day that saw plenty of surprises at the front of the field and in terms of DNFs, there’s a lot to take away.

Let’s take a look at our winners and losers from today’s NASCAR race.

Winner: Chase Elliott takes his second win of 2026

Even if Chase Elliott couldn’t get to victory lane on Sunday, potentially missing out on the win due to a late caution with about 10 laps remaining, it was going to be a great points day. Thanks to the No. 9 team, the work put into building the fastest car at Texas Motor Speedway was rewarded on the final restart as Elliott raced to victory. Elliott has now given himself a nice cushion in the top four of the points table through 11 races.

Loser: Christopher Bell’s bad luck continues in Texas

Texas Motor Speedway has not been kind to Christopher Bell and the No. 20 team. Coming into the Wurth 400, Bell had finished 17th or worse in three of his previous nine races at the track. Things were looking promising early on Sunday, with Bell leading 22 laps and moving closer to the Stage 1 victory. Unfortunately, as he worked to pass teammate Denny Hamlin, Todd Gilliland broke loose and went straight into the No. 20. Bell’s car suffered damage at the end of the race, resulting in a last-place finish at Texas with only 1 point.

Winner: Riley Herbst starts proving she belongs

Coming into today’s NASCAR race, Erik Jones had not scored more than 16 points in last month’s race. He was losing 14 points in three consecutive races and after the first caution in Stage 1, thanks to the No. 43 team’s strategy, Jones took his first Cup Series stage win of the year and finished the day in 12th place with a season-best 35 points.

Loser: Ryan Blaney’s Pit Road Experience

The good news for the No. 12 team is that this time the pit crew was not at fault. Ryan Blaney lost 11 places on his first pit stop in the Wurth 400 because his car left the pit box and stalled when he put it in the wrong gear. It came after Blaney had earned double-digit placings after poor qualifying on Saturday. Unfortunately, the problem with qualifying poorly is that it leaves you with one of the last options for a pit stall. He later came back to bite Blaney. A third-place finish at Talladega gave Bowman a ninth-place finish on Saturday, giving him his second consecutive top-10 finish. The Dallas Cowboys recently concluded a controversial 2026 NFL Draft class that included two first-round selections and seven overall selections. They were also dealing with some drama arising from George Pinkens’ contract situation.

While Pickens recently signed his franchise tag tender, ensuring a salary of $27.3 million for the 2026 season, there were several different scenarios in play. The Cowboys were reportedly unwilling to discuss a long-term contract extension, which meant the only outcome for Pickens was to either sign the one-year franchise tag, sit out the season, or be traded to a different team.

Still, would the Cowboys really trade a superstar for the second year in a row just because they couldn’t agree on contract value? A trade may be more realistic than many people expect.

According to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Pickens recently considered a trade from the Cowboys and even evaluated what his potential options would be with another team. Nevertheless, after a brief period of Pickens assessing his trade and/or contract value market, his camp decided he would be better off signing the tag and remaining with the Cowboys for the upcoming campaign.

Chances are, Pickens will play the season on the franchise tag. Of course, if the Cowboys somehow fall flat early in the season, more drama could develop, leading to even more trade speculation.

Still, the best outcome for Pickens might be to forget about all this contract drama and hope he ends up as a Pro Bowl selection for the second consecutive season. At that point, the Cowboys or any other team will have no choice but to pay him top dollar.

We’ve known the names for a while: Mats Sundin and John Chayka. But some people around the game still refuse to believe that a former player (a great guy, admittedly) and a young executive, whose last act in the NHL five years ago was getting suspended by the league, would be the new Toronto Maple Leafs front office duo.

But we are here.

The Leafs are officially announcing Sunday that Sundin and Chayka have been hired to run their front office. Sundin’s role will come with the title of Senior Executive Advisor, Hockey Operations. Chaika will be the general manager.

Friedman said it is a full-time commitment for Sundin. He would move his family from Sweden to Toronto.

As far as the composition of the pair is concerned, he says the goal would be to have the two unite publicly. But he adds that “there needs to be someone who has the final say and reports directly to MSLE President and CEO Keith Pelley. That’s Chayka. The position the organization advertised in its interview process was ‘Chief of Hockey Operations,’ and Chayka will be that.”

The move is already being ridiculed in some circles of the game. Sundin has zero front office experience in the NHL, while Chayka was the youngest GM in league history in 2016 when he was hired by the Arizona Coyotes. He left the team after four years under controversial circumstances. He was ultimately suspended for one year by the NHL for “engaging in conduct detrimental to the league and breaching his fiduciary duty to the club”. That conduct included illegal scouting practices, including watching prospects separately from the NHL Combine.

General manager Joe Hortiz recently completed his second draft with the Los Angeles Chargers. Hortiz added eight new players to head coach Jim Harbaugh’s roster during the three-day draft event, including Miami’s Akhim Messidor with the 22nd overall selection in the first round.

Not surprisingly, the Chargers placed a heavy emphasis on rebuilding in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Six of the team’s eight draft selections were either offensive linemen or defensive linemen. Still only 29 years old, Njoku is coming off a poor season where he recorded only 293 yards and four touchdowns. In 2023, Njoku posted a career-high 882-yard, six-touchdown campaign.

While he likely won’t return to his peak form with the Chargers, Njoku would give Justin Herbert another reliable weapon on a team that could use more playmakers.

In the months leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft, many analysts thought there was a chance that the Carolina Panthers could draft a wide receiver in the first round for the third consecutive year. Heck, even Panthers general manager Dan Morgan admitted the team was set to select a pass-catcher first.

Ultimately, the Panthers did not select a receiver at No. 19, instead choosing Georgia offensive tackle Monroe Freeling. However, the Panthers returned to the receiver position with their third pick, taking Tennessee tight end Chris Brazell with the 83rd overall selection in the third round. Brazell is expected to get playing time as a rookie, leading to the departure of another recent top player in Carolina.

recently, athleticJoseph Persson suggested that Xavier Leggett could emerge as a “potential trade candidate” this fall.

The Panthers made Leggett the 32nd overall pick of the first round in the 2024 NFL Draft. He started 13 of his 16 appearances as a rookie, recording 49 receptions on 84 targets for 497 yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately, he was not able to increase those numbers in Year 2. Leggett started 12 of his 15 appearances, recording 35 receptions on 64 targets for 363 yards and three touchdowns.

Now heading into the third season of a four-year contract that can extend to a fifth season with a team option, Leggett risks falling behind on the depth chart in Carolina. Tate McMillan is top dog. Last year’s undrafted signee Jalen Coker recorded more yards despite playing in four fewer games and seeing 21 fewer targets. Additionally, the Panthers have now added Brazell.

In other words, the Panthers are likely ready to deal Leggett, who is just 25 years old. He should be able to get a third-day draft pick, but are the Panthers willing to give him up for such a low return? If Leggett doesn’t show development in the team’s minicamp, he may very well be gone.

Now that the dust is settling on the 2026 NFL Draft class, the San Francisco 49ers’ roster is starting to come into focus. For a team that fell out of the first round, the 49ers have taken a lot of heat for their eight-man draft class. Still, when general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan put together the team’s final 53-man roster, there could be tough decisions to be made with some of those selections.

One of the players drafted by the 49ers was Indiana running back Kellon Black in the third round with the 90th overall pick. Could his arrival herald the departure of another recent 49ers draft pick?

recently, athletic49ers insider Vic Tafur suggested that running back Isaac Guerredo “looks like he’s buried (on the depth chart) and will look for a new team.” Tafur doesn’t suggest the 49ers will trade Guerrando, but we’d imagine a respectable offer would get a deal done.

The 49ers selected Guerredo in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 129th overall selection. He started three games as a rookie and participated in 16 overall, recording 420 yards and four touchdowns on 84 attempts. But last year, he appeared in 14 games and didn’t get any carries. As Tafur said, he’s been buried, and Black’s arrival won’t make Guerando’s life in the RB room any easier.

The 49ers have starter Christian McCaffrey and backups Jordan James, Black, Guerando, Patrick Taylor Jr. and Sean McCormick. While McCaffrey is the team’s workhorse, the 49ers are looking for another back who can relieve their All-Pro weapons, and they may be ready to admit that Guerando isn’t the solution they were looking for.

The Montreal Canadiens are set to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of their tightly contested first-round series, with each game decided by a single goal.

Indeed, five of the six games required overtime, suggesting that any advantage in Game 7 would go a long way in deciding the series winner.

Take a look at some of the keys to success as the Habs prepare to face the Bolts.

defensive sharpness

Prior to Game 6, the Habs had done a great job of limiting high-danger chances from the Lightning.

On average, the Bolts managed to generate less than five quality scoring chances per game at 5v5, while the Canadiens were closer to 7 per game.

However, fortunes completely reversed in Game 6.

The Lightning held a 22-7 advantage in quality scoring opportunities, essentially doubling their overall production in just one game. It was enough to erase Montreal’s significant advantage in that statistical department throughout the series (45-41, 52.3%).

If the Habs are to win Game 7, they will need to recapture the defensive excellence that led to success in the first five games of the series. Slowing down the Lightning in the neutral zone, which will slow them down from the rush, will also go a long way in limiting the odd man rush.

We’ve discussed the lack of first-line offense at 5v5 several times throughout the series, but at this point, regardless of the situation, the team just needs to show them off.

Whether it’s the power play, penalty kill, overtime, or any other possible scenario, the Montreal Canadiens will need Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkowski to lead the offensive attack.

To return to his effective ways, he must find a way to increase his shot production, an issue that has plagued him against the Lightning.

There are many advantages to being the youngest team in the league, and the Canadiens perform at their best when their backs are against the wall, but their lack of experience in Game 7 could be seen as a red flag.

Making it to the second round of the NHL playoffs is hard enough, taking a certain level of focus that is usually easier to find among the veterans.

On the other side of the coin, their youthful enthusiasm may be enough to ease nerves and allow them to focus on the task at hand, of course, with a little help from their friends.

The Montreal Canadiens (3-3) face the Tampa Bay Lightning (3-3) in Game 7 on Sunday, with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.

As has been the case throughout the series, the teams faced off in Game 6, with the Lightning emerging victorious 1–0 in overtime. This was the fifth game to require extra time, which shows how difficult the goal was to achieve.

In fact, Montreal’s best forwards Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkowski have yet to score a goal at 5v5 against the Lightning, which is one of the biggest problems facing the Habs in the final game of the series.

Simply put, the Canadiens need their star players to shine in Game 7.

The good news for head coach Martin St-Louis is that he is able to rely on his depth with players like Alex Texier, Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook to provide much-needed secondary and tertiary offense.

It’s also worth noting that veteran Brendan Gallagher has done great things from an underlying numbers standpoint, despite his lack of ice time. While Gallagher was on the ice, the Canadiens controlled over 70 percent of the shots, the best result among all skaters.

Possible Lineup Changes

It remains to be seen whether veteran Noah Dobson will be in uniform for the Canadiens, although his presence would be a significant boon for a team that has had difficulty defending the Lightning from the crowd.

Tampa Bay held a 22–7 advantage in high-danger opportunities during Game 6, erasing much of Montreal’s series lead in the process.

At the very least, with Dobson in the mix, rookie netminder Jacob Dobbs should be exposed to less of a weird man rush.

As of 11:20 a.m. ET, Dobson is considered a game-time decision.

Or more precisely, they immediately discussed a penalty, which at first seemed imaginary, but was actually a legitimate penalty on Oliver Kapanen. In this particular case, I would argue the point was that the referee’s hand did not go up until Dominic James oversold the contact moments later. Either way, the Canadians cannot focus on umpiring in this series, as it is a factor they cannot easily control.
