Vasilevskiy denied three Montreal breakaways in regulation, but he never saw Montreal defenseman Len Hutson’s slap shot from the right point as it passed multiple bodies and into the net 2:08 into overtime to give the Canadiens a 3–2 win and a 2–1 lead in the best-of-7 series.

Alexandre Texier, who opened the scoring early in the first period, flicked a shot back to Hutson, and the 2025 Calder Trophy winner produced a rocket that found its way through a half-dozen bodies and into the net.

Brayden Point and Brandon Hagel scored for the Lightning. Hagel’s goal early in the second period put Tampa Bay ahead 2–1, but Kirby Dach put the Canadiens even at 12:43. Vasilevskiy finished with 26 saves on 29 shots; Montreal rookie Jacob Dobbs faced only 17 shots and stopped 15.

This was the third consecutive overtime game in the series, the first for the Lightning since entering the NHL in 1992. The Canadiens had not gone to OT in three straight playoff games since Games 2, 3 and 4 of the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals – they won all three en route to their most recent championship. It was the first time that an NHL playoff series began with three straight overtime games since the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals did so in 2021.

The teams split OT wins in Games 1 and 2 at Benchmark International Arena, with the Canadiens winning 4–3 in the opener and Tampa Bay taking the series with a 3–2 win in Game 2. The Lightning have not won consecutive playoff games since the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Rangers.

They will try to even the series on Sunday night in Montreal.

The sellout crowd of 20,962 was roaring from the moment Canadiens legend Yvan Cournoyer took the torch to lead Montreal onto the ice. This became even more intense when his heroes gained a quick lead.

Zach Bolduc moved the puck to the right circle and saw that Texier was late in the middle, with no Lightning defender there to pick him up. Bolduc fed a pass onto Texier’s stick for a perfect shot from the slot that took the top corner past Vasilevskiy’s glove at 4:53, giving Montreal the lead 1–0.

The Lightning got another power play 30 seconds after the goal when Dach was called for tripping but produced very little power. Montreal had a good chance after Nikita Kucherov took an unnecessary tripping penalty at 12:23, and the Lightning again failed to convert after Mike Matheson took a hooking penalty at 19:11.

Tampa Bay dominated the game for the first few minutes of the second period and led 2–1 at the 4:47 mark. Hagel picked up a pass from Jake Evans in the neutral zone, raced to the left circle and surprised Dobbs with a quick shot that beat him on the short side for his fourth goal of the series.

Vasilevsky maintained the lead just over a minute later by stopping Montreal rookie Ivan Demidov on a breakaway. Demidov, who led all NHL rookies with 62 points during the regular season, gave the Lightning their fourth power play at 9:59 when he carelessly high-sticked Ryan McDonagh, but Tampa Bay could not take advantage.

This set the stage for the Canadiens to even the score. Vasilevskiy blocked Dach from the slot, but the puck went along the right board. Dach tracked him down and fired through the maze of bodies; Vasilevskiy never saw the puck, which deflected off McDonagh and into the net at 12:43, making the score 2–2.

Tampa Bay spent most of the remaining period killing penalties. Hegel was called for holding a stick at 14:05, Emil Lilleberg was sent for hooking at 16:14 and Darren Raddish was called for a high-sticking minor at 19:29.

Montreal outshot the Bolts 13–7 in the middle period, and Tampa Bay did not have a single shot on goal until the final 13:25.

Vasilevskiy was the biggest reason the Lightning forced overtime despite being outshot 21-11 in the final two periods, including 8-4 in the third when he faced two more breakaways.

Cole Caufield, the 51-goal scorer during the regular season, came in alone at 3:29, but Vasilevskiy came out to challenge him, but was unsuccessful. Josh Anderson took a breakaway pass coming out of the penalty box midway through the period, but Vasilevskiy did not fake the pass and made a wrist save from his close range.

According to Natural Stat Trick, the Bolts applied little pressure on Dobbs and had only three high-danger scoring chances over the course of 60 minutes. Hutson’s game-winner came on the only shot in overtime.

Tampa Bay did almost nothing offensively after the first five minutes of the second period and only the play of Vasilevskiy gave them a chance to win.

Hagel and linemates need help

The Lightning scored eight goals in the first three games of this series. Hagel has four of them, assisted on the fifth and has been on the ice for all eight. For good measure, he also became the first player in Lightning history to get a Gordie Howe hat trick (goal/assist/fighting major) in Game 2.

His goal in Game 3 was an unassisted gem, ending with a spectacular shot that completely caught Dobbs by surprise.

Tampa Bay did a great job of shutting down all four Montreal power plays in Game 3, including three in a span of just over five minutes in the second period. They limited the Canadiens to five shots on goal during four shutouts and were generally successful in keeping Montreal out. This was a huge change from earlier in the series, when the Lightning surrendered four power-play goals on the Canadiens’ first six opportunities.

But eight minutes of power-play time for the Canadiens meant Tampa Bay had to keep top offensive players like Kucherov on the bench. He played only 41 seconds over the course of 9:59 spanning the second and third periods – most of which Tampa Bay played down a man. Not having your top players in tie games is no way to be successful, especially in the playoffs.

The first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night always attracts the most attention, especially when you get as many surprises as we saw last night. However, every year it is the second day that proves to be the most meaningful as this is where many of the gems are found.

Let’s take a look at our winners and losers for Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Winner: Buffalo Bills

If the Buffalo Bills had taken Clemson edge defender TJ Parker with their first round pick, he would have received a B- grade. Although he is not an exceptional athlete, the 6-foot-3 athlete knows how to win with his strength, and his arm length and hand usage make him very effective in penetrating the backfield. Parker also provides a relentless motor, and it shows him being a capable run defender. So, Buffalo got a potential talent and upside pick in the first round, and they snagged him in the second round after falling three times and adding a ton of picks on days two and three.

Loser: Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee

The last two nights have been a reminder of how one injury can erase everything for such a promising talent. Back to December 2024: Jermod McCoy is coming off an All-American season and is projected to be a top 10 pick each year. Then he injured his knee during offseason workouts and everything derailed. He’ll miss the entire 2025 season, and reports came out last night that NFL teams are very concerned about a “bone plug used to repair a cartilage defect” in the same knee. The fear is that he will need another surgery in the future. The surgery will end the season and some even fear it could end his career.

Winner: Shadure Sanders, QB, Cleveland Browns

The first two days of the 2026 NFL Draft were not only a vote of confidence from the Cleveland Browns organization in Shedur Sanders, but they are also putting him in a better position to succeed. Todd Monken’s offense now features an explosive receiver who gets open quickly (Casey Concepcion) and a big-bodied wideout who can catch anything thrown in his general direction (Denzel Boston). Oh, Sanders also has a better offensive line to protect him next season. He may not be a long-term starter in Cleveland, but the Browns draft picks in 2026 give Sanders a legitimate chance to prove himself this season.

Loser: Jacksonville Jaguars

The good news for the Jacksonville Jaguars is that select tight end Nate Borkircher made a run that forced other teams to take some picks to end Round 2. Borkircher is a solid blocker, and he looks for opportunities to get physical with defenders. The ‘good’ here for Jacksonville is that they got a legitimate TE2 to pair with Brenton Strange. But at what cost? It was a reach with the 56th overall pick. Notably, NFL insiders also told Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson during the other day’s live stream that Boerkircher doesn’t really have size either.

Winner: Terrell Family and Atlanta Falcons

In 2020, the Atlanta Falcons selected cornerback AJ Terrell with the 16th overall pick. Six years later, he’s become one of the franchise’s best players and a stalwart in the secondary, and now he gets a chance to play alongside his younger brother. Avion Terrell would have been a first-round pick if not for the pre-draft process when he ran a 4.64 40-yard dash at his pro day. 40 Don’t let time fool you; He is a very good football player. He doesn’t bring anything in the way of a blocker, but the athleticism he brings at 6-foot-3 is nearly unmatched in this class. Just find ways to get the football in his hands, and he can be dangerous with it. What a strong night for the Eagles front office, but this is the norm for them in the NFL Draft.

Loser: Pittsburgh Steelers

We still don’t believe the Pittsburgh Steelers have a long-term starting quarterback on the roster. Drew Allar boasts the size and arm strength you want, and Mike McCarthy’s track record of getting more out of his young signal-callers at least offers some hope for Allar’s development. That said, this was a three-year starter at Penn State who hasn’t really shown any signs of improvement, and his mechanics are still a mess. We see no reason to believe so; Given the lack of improvement in defensive diagnostics and play within rhythm, we think Elar will be a swing-and-a-miss for Pittsburgh. Additionally, this selection now signals that the team already doesn’t feel Will Howard can be a long-term starter.

The Philadelphia Eagles definitely wanted to bring back Jaylen Phillips, but the Carolina Panthers pushed the bidding war to a price that couldn’t be compared. Fast forward to the 2026 NFL Draft: Philadelphia flipped the 98th overall pick and a 2027 third-round selection to the Minnesota Vikings for edge rusher Jonathan Greenard. He only had 3 sacks last season, but was a double-digit sack player in the last two campaigns. The best way to summarize Georgia linebacker CJ Allen is extremely solid. His athleticism and highlight reel don’t demand attention. However, he is a smart player who helps elevate the talent around him as a very good “green dot” leader on defense. He is not great in any one area, nor is he a liability. Allen can be a reliable three-down linebacker.

Colton Hood, CB, Tennessee

Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood had the potential to go in the first round. However, he still needs to improve his coverage techniques and instincts. Additionally, he is very good in press coverage as he uses his physical ability to outmaneuver opposing wide receivers. The same aggression proves valuable in stopping the run as well. With development, Hood could be an impressive cornerback at the next level.

Chase Bisontis, G, Texas A&M

Texas A&M guard Chase Bissontis is one of the better players at his position in this year’s class. He’s a talented run blocker with good footwork, above-average strength, and brings out a nasty streak when needed. However, he did not go into Round 1 due to concerns about his pass blocking as he has shown problems to opponents.

Bisontis still has a lot of potential and can definitely be a worthwhile starter in the NFL.

Jeremy Bernard, WR, Alabama

Alabama wide receiver Jermaine Bernard brings some nice tools to the team that selects him in the NFL Draft. He is a smooth route runner with good size and acceleration. He can play outside or become a matchup problem in the slot.

The biggest issues with Bernard’s game are that he does not play commensurate with his size (6-foot-1 and 206 pounds) while struggling for balls in the air, and he is not a player who will stretch the field at an above-average level.

Kaden McDonald, DT, Ohio State

Many thought five Ohio State players could go in Round 1 of the NFL Draft on Thursday. However, defensive tackle Kaden McDonald was not called among the first 32 picks. That doesn’t mean he can’t become an impact player at the next level soon.

McDonald is not a tackle with real rush value, but he has shown he can be a high-level talent in stopping the run as he has natural leverage and sends shock waves to interior linemen during initial contact. The OSU star has also proven that he is very good at finding the ball carrier and making tackles.

Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, S, Toledo

In the right system, Toledo’s Emmanuel McNeil-Warren has star potential in the NFL. Often lined up in the box as a safety, he has consistently shown ability as a run-stopping difference-maker and an enforcer through the middle. Although he has solid coverage skills, he will still need to defend against mismatches with speedy burners on the outside.

Mike Washington Jr., RB, Arkansas

Arkansas running back Mike Washington Jr. has consistently improved at each stop. Texas A&M linebacker Cassius Howell could be an immediate difference-maker in the NFL as an EDGE rusher. He has a great first burst, is elusive, and owns a nasty spin move. Still, he needs to improve his handwork and his strength to better deal with run blockers and set the edge properly. But at the very least, he can be a designated player early in his career.

Anthony Hill Jr., LB, Texas

Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. could be a Pro Bowler in a few years. He’s smart, has the power to blow up run plays, and the speed to hold his own in coverage or move from sideline to sideline. The bigger issue was that most of their success came from a lot of run-blitz calls. He also needs to work on disguising his attacks and missed a surprising number of tackles two years ago.

Brandon Sissay, CB, South Carolina

While he needs development in his block-shedding techniques and winning in the gap, at 6-foot-3, 318 pounds and with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, he’s quite good at run-stuffing the middle. With the series returning to Montreal, the Habs will have a great opportunity to regain home ice advantage with a little help from their friends at the Bell Centre. When the Sabers learned they were losing Josh Norris to injury in Game 3, it caused a bit of panic.

Buffalo is well ahead of Ostlund, whom they selected 16th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. However, a rookie making his playoff debut in place of a proven impact NHL forward is a big question.

Despite his initial nervousness, Ostlund didn’t let the horror of the moment overwhelm him.

“Maybe a little nervousness the first two innings,” Ostlund said with a smile. “But it also goes away very quickly.”

“For his first playoff game with us, he gets an A-plus,” Ruff said.

Ostlund netted an empty-net goal as time expired to take Game 3 at TD Garden – his first goal in the playoffs.

Ostlund had a promising rookie season. He scored 11 goals and 27 points in 60 games. While he went scoreless in his first eight games since his 2024-25 debut, it’s clear that the Sabres’ rise to the plate has benefited Ostlund’s development.

However, his best game to date was probably Thursday night.

According to Natural Stat Trick, the Ostlund-led line with Zach Benson and Jack Quinn led the Sabers in expected goal share with an 89.98 xGF% all night.

In fact, during 5-on-5 play, they didn’t allow a single scoring chance against Ostlund and company on the ice.
