By the end of the game, both teams had a combined 34 penalty minutes, equaling 68.

The Tampa Bay Lightning forced their Eastern Conference First Round series into a seventh game with a 1-0 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 6 at the Bell Center on Friday night.

With the Lightning in “win or go home” mode and the Canadiens eager to end the series in front of their home fans, both teams were excited. The Canadiens had 26 hits in the opening 20 minutes; The Lightning, not known as a physical team, had 15.

Cole Caufield, Montreal’s 51-goal scorer during the regular season, almost opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game; He beat Vasilevskiy but hit the post. That happened when Tampa Bay’s Yanni Gourde picked up a foul play from Dobbs and took a shot to the back of the net, but couldn’t connect on the wraparound, causing the puck to slip through the crease.

This was largely due to some late heroics from Vasilevskiy, who lived up to his status as a Vezina Trophy finalist – especially after Charles-Edouard was called for slashing at 16:54. He denied Caufield again from 20 feet, then robbed Demidov from the right circle after a perfect setup and denied him again on the rebound.

The Canadiens continued to control the game after the power play ended and Vasilevskiy kept the game scoreless for 40 minutes on a last-second effort by Philippe Denault.

Montreal controlled the first five minutes of the third period, but the game changed after Montreal defenseman Caden Guhle was called for slashing Guentzel at 5:11 to break up a solo scoring chance. Tampa Bay did not score but applied a lot of pressure and dominated the game for most of the rest of the period.

The Lightning got a late power-play opportunity when Demidov was called for goaltender interference with 3:17 left after fouling Vasilevsky.

Tampa Bay controlled the puck for almost the entire power play, but couldn’t get past Dobbs, who made big saves on Kucherov, Radish and the point, then denied Brandon Hagel’s tip-in attempt shortly after the penalty ended.

Tampa Bay finished regulation with a 28–27 edge in shots on goal and an 81–58 differential in attempts.

Vasilevsky stepped forward

The Lightning were swept in Game 5, but were even at 2–2 before Vasilevskiy was defeated by a blocked shot 99 out of 100. He more than atoned for it in Game 6, earning the 70th playoff win and eighth shutout of his career.

The “Big Cat” was everywhere, leaving Montreal shooters (and team executives) shaking their heads.

“He was excellent tonight,” D’Astas told Scripps Sports. “Because of them we’re going back to Tampa. It was fun to see.”

Hegel said having Vasilevskiy in goal allows him and his teammates to play with more freedom.

“You can go out and play your game and not have to worry about what’s behind you,” he said. “It seemed as if Vasi would never allow another goal.”

Goncalves an unlikely hero

On a team with stars like Kucherov, Vasilevskiy and Hegel, it’s easy to lose sight of players like Goncalves, who is a bottom-six forward and does a lot of attacking work. He was scoreless in the series before getting an assist in Game 5 and had not scored a goal since March 17.

But he missed the game-winner by tipping defenseman Caden Guhle and refused to leave the game after Dobbs blocked his first-time attempt.

“I talked to him before the game about what he needs to do in this game, be where he needs to be,” Cooper said. “It was only fair that such a goal was needed to win. It was a brilliant game by both teams.”

The Lightning probably could have flown home even without the plane – such is the feeling of a season-saving overtime win. But as Cooper said, “We haven’t won anything yet.”

Both teams have had success in Game 7. The Lightning have won seven of 10, including four of five played at home. This is their first Game 7 since the first round in 2022, when they defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 2–1.

Montreal is 15-9 in Game 7s, including a 7-6 mark on the road. The Canadiens’ last Game 7 came when they defeated Toronto 3–1 in the second round in 2021. Ironically, Corey Perry scored the game-winning goal – the same Corey Perry who would be trying to help the Lightning end his former team’s season.

The Edmonton Oilers haven’t had it this season.

After two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearances, Connor McDavid and company didn’t have the same excitement as in previous playoff runs as their 2025-26 season came to a heartbreaking halt. Now, general manager Stan Bowman faces difficult challenges in upgrading the Oilers roster with limited cap space and expendable assets before next season.

Whether you like it or not, changes must happen. McDavid made no secret of his displeasure, and Bowman and management should heed his warning if the franchise hopes to remain a Stanley Cup contender.

1. Take a moment to breathe

Logic needs to rule the day in oil country. Oilers management couldn’t react quickly to its latest heartbreak. Instead, the argument for meaningful change must be at the forefront.

They don’t need to throw out the baby with the bathwater because the core of the team is solid. Leon Draisaitl, Zack Hyman, Evan Bouchard and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are vital to the success of this club. However, the problem is not the main one in Edmonton.

Management must look at salaries, player usage, statistics, analytics and coaches’ feedback to make the right decisions.

2. Who will be the next Corey Perry or Evander Kane?

Confidence is a great medicine, but so is arrogance. The Oilers’ confidence is a quiet confidence. It’s the fire that burns in McDavid’s eyes that heralds a new display of speed and skill that hasn’t been seen yet.

Swagger, on the other hand, is the approach pioneered by legends like Corey Perry and Evander Kane. Who brought the swagger for the Oilers this year?

For all intents and purposes, it was missing. How do they get it back? Who can they add to the roster that brings that element? Does this mean promoting Ike Howard to full-time NHL duty? Or do they need to trade for this kind of player?

3. Bring back Connor Ingram

Even with his playoff disappointment, Connor Ingram was a pleasant addition.

Acquired via trade early in the year, he finished with respectable numbers. In 32 games, he had a 16–10–3 record with a 2.60 goals-against average (GAA), .899 save percentage (SV%), and two shutouts.

Additionally, of the goaltending trio the Oilers finished the season with, he was the only one with an expected positive goals-against average. In other words, Ingram was the only goaltender to make more saves than the average NHL goaltender.

The Oilers need more of this, not less.

4. One way or another, Tristan Jerry has to go

Whether it’s via trade or buy-out, Tristan Jarry may not start next season with the Oilers. They don’t need another inconsistent goalkeeper, whose attitude may or may not always be right. The Oilers need someone who is consistent, without big peaks or cavernous valleys. Just consistent league-average goaltending.

According to Hockey Reference, the league average GAA and SV% in 2025–26 were 2.88 and .896, respectively. That’s who Ingram was this year. Now, they just need to find another one.

5. Add a top-six forward

For Oilers fans and pundits, many of these items feel like déjà vu. Sadly, this is no exception.

The Oilers have been searching for the perfect top-six forward for years. Unfortunately, they’ve settled for less than game-changing talent. This needs to end.

At the end of the season, Matt Savoie showed great promise in a senior role. Ike Howard is also waiting in the wings with a profile of a top-six forward.

Will these youngsters secure a place in the top six? Or, will the organization look for an external addition? A rationale should be given for any choice. Regardless of direction, they must make their choice and then act immediately.

6. Darnell Nurse Wake Up Call

Many Oilers fans are calling for Darnell Nurse to be traded. The truth of the matter is that any business related to it is very difficult to complete right now. After the 2026–27 regular season, their no-trade clause changes to a 10-team no-trade list.

There is no such thing as a perfect player. However, the Oilers need Nurse to be a better player than he has shown recently.

Before the nurse leaves for the offseason, she should be given an ultimatum. He either lives up to the coach’s expectations, or eats popcorn in the press box.

This is a win-win situation for the oilers. Either Nurse’s performance comes back or she spends so much time in the press box that she demands a trade. And if Nurse is in the press box, it means another defender has come in his place.

Either way, that conversation must happen.

7. Take a long and hard look at Chris Knoblauch

Is Chris Knoblauch the right coach for the Oilers? He was Jeff Jackson’s choice to lead the Oilers to a championship. But, is it still the right choice?

Management and coaching need to be on the same page. Also, a coach can only do the best with what he has. There must be coordination in roster creation and deployment; If they aren’t, someone has to go.

Let’s be honest, Knoblauch is a great coach. They have won 135 of 233 regular season games. In the playoffs, he has led the Oilers to 31 wins in 53 games.

The question with Knoblauch isn’t whether he’s a good coach or not. The question is can they win a Stanley Cup with him. If the answer is yes then keep it. If the answer is no, cut bait and hire someone else.

The Oilers can’t afford to have another season like this. To make sure that doesn’t happen, they need to answer these questions. Until then, hockey fans in Canada can enjoy the Montreal Canadiens’ run.

The Packers are projected to receive compensatory picks in Rounds 3 and 4 in the 2027 NFL Draft, which could give general manager Brian Gutekunst the option to sacrifice a third-round pick forfeiture to take Soursby in the supplemental draft. He will have four years of contractual control and can develop for another year before making him Love’s backup in 2027. After that, he’ll still be only 24 years old and the Packers could potentially flip him for premium draft capital in the 2028 NFL Draft.

We are prioritizing landing locations first, where Sorsby will be under no pressure to see the field in the near future. The Dallas Cowboys have already demonstrated they are willing to gamble on young quarterbacks with attractive physical tools (Trey Lance and Joe Milton); Sorsby was a more attractive prospect than any of them when he was acquired. It will also be a homecoming for the 23-year-old quarterback, who starred at Lake Dallas High School in Denton, Texas. Speaking to Mike Sandow of The Athletic, an NFL executive shared his belief that the Bills’ window as a Super Bowl contender in the AFC has closed. This is despite the expected regression from the New England Patriots and the AFC seemingly being “down” right now.

In 2025, Buffalo tied for the fourth-most wins in the AFC and then reached the divisional round, but lost in overtime. Importantly, according to The Athletic, Rockets ownership is giving the front office clearance to spend more on the roster next season and it looks to keep the young core together. However, that could be a problem for Houston once the contract extension takes effect.

Entering the offseason, the Rockets payroll for the 2026-27 season is already $184.925 million, according to Basketball Reference.
