He has won two gold medals, has a lifetime .992 fielding percentage and is ranked in the 100th percentile via Statcast in framing and pop time (1.86 seconds). He is a key catcher for whichever team he is on.

But can he kill? It is possible. Bailey has had a disappointing start with San Francisco this season. So far, he has put up a .146/.213/.183 slash line. This resulted in a ridiculously poor 16 wRC+ (where 100 is average). But, despite that line, there is hope here. Bailey’s weighting on base average (wOBA) is .190, but his expected weighting (xwOBA) is a more respectable .283 mark.

Who will the Giants draft with pick 10?^th Overall selection?

Losing Lawrence will hurt the defense, but the team is now in a good position with the fifth and tenth overall selections in this week’s draft. The buzz around the league is that there are only 15-20 players in this draft class who have true first-round grades. So with two top-10 picks, Big Blue should undoubtedly have one of the winners of the draft.

It is well known that there are three players who rank very high on the Giants’ board, and they are Notre Dame running back Jeremiah Love, Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles and his teammate safety Caleb Downs.

There’s a good chance all three could be on the board when New York is on the clock with the fifth pick, and there’s a possibility Downs could still be on the board at 10. This would give the team the possibility of taking either Love or Styles with their first pick, and then the possibility of taking Downs five picks later.

If Downs is no longer on the board, the team could look to a corner like Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy to replace Cor’Dale Flote who signed with the Tennessee Titans. Or they could look at Arizona State wide receiver Jordan Tyson.

The team added free agent receivers Darnell Mooney and Kelvin Austin III this offseason, but they were signed to one-year deals, while the 6’2 203-pound Tyson could be a mainstay for years to come. Durability has been an issue for the Arizona State receiver as he has missed time dealing with hamstring, knee and collarbone injuries. But when healthy, he is an explosive playmaker and that would be a huge compliment to Malik Nabors.

The San Francisco Giants were one of the biggest winners in the MLB Draft Lottery last year, moving up to get the fourth overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. While draft day is still a few months away, there is some early information on who the Giants may want to draft in 2026.

If Emerson is off the board, McDaniel says San Francisco “would be happy to get” Georgia Tech catcher Von Lackey or UC Santa Barbara starting pitcher Jackson Flora.

Lackey could be an attractive option for San Francisco, as the catcher doesn’t seem to have a long-term plan. Patrick Bailey has provided Gold Glove-caliber defense behind the plate and is one of the best pitch framers in baseball, but he is also a well-below average hitter at catcher.

Flora, 6 feet 5 inches tall, entered the season as the consensus top 2026 MLB Draft prospect and has done nothing to change that this season. In 10 starts, he has a 0.71 ERA with a 0.84 WHIP and an 84-24 K-BB ratio with just 4.1 H/9 in 63.1 innings.

Not only is he one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL when healthy, but he plays a position in which New York is dangerously weak. Removing him would leave the team in a dire situation on its defensive interior.

A contract extension would likely cost more than $30 million per season. If Lawrence is traded and New York gets the second-day pick back, there’s really no one on the roster outside of Malik Nabors who can dedicate that cap space.

While the array of players in the 2027 NFL free agency class includes players like Drake London, Chris Olave, Tucker Craft, Quenton Nelson and Joey Porter Jr., all of them are expected to sign contract extensions this year. “He’s super, super important. He’s a cornerstone football player — not really a cornerstone, like a middle stone. He’s right in the middle. He’s a huge stone, and he’s very active, athletic.”

While New York is one of the deepest teams in the NFL, it’s a much different story internally. If Lawrence were traded, the team would rely on players like Darius Alexander and Roy Robertson-Harris to play a significant percentage of the snaps. This would be a huge blow defensively.

That’s not even to mention the fact that this would create a new need that has to be addressed in the 2026 NFL Draft. New York doesn’t have a ton of draft capital for starters, having only two top-100 selections along with four of the first 150 selections. With the club already having to address the linebackers, wide receivers, cornerbacks and offensive line, trading Lawrence would mean creating a void somewhere that can’t be adequately filled.

To make matters worse, the 2026 NFL Draft class is not particularly strong. A late first-round pick this year could have been a second-day pick last year, and the talent pool in the 25-45 range is largely the same. On a purely return basis, New York almost certainly won’t be able to come close to Lawrence’s impact.

The best option for the Giants is to resolve this contract dispute with Lawrence, finding terms that will work for him on a long-term deal. Given that the team has a starting quarterback, wide receiver and two edge rushers who are still playing on rookie-level contracts, they also have the financial flexibility to give Lawrence both a pay raise and more guaranteed money.

Rated as the 22nd best prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, Aldridge has been hailed as one of the best first basemen in the minor leagues. He had an .836 OPS at Triple-A Sacramento and earned a call-up to the major leagues in September. So what is he doing in Triple-A to begin the 2026 season?

One reason Aldridge is doomed in Triple-A is that the Giants’ roster is a mess. The Giants are essentially carrying three thirds of first basemen on the roster: Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers and Casey Schmidt. Because Chapman is the best defender, he is the third baseman, moving Schmidt to play first base and Devers to the DH slot. This stops Aldridge in his natural position.

The Giants also signed Luis Erez last offseason and are asking him to play second base. Erez fits better defensively at first base, but Devers has covered first base, forcing Erez to play second base, where he is rated as one of the worst players defensively in baseball.
