Which Canadiens lines are performing well in the NHL playoffs

The first-round series between the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning is tied at one game each, giving the Habs a perfect opportunity to regain the lead as the series now shifts back to the Bell Centre.

Given that both games required extra time, it is safe to say that the series has been tightly contested, although there are some numbers worth noting as the Habs prepare to host the Bolts.

In this article, we will discuss the game of forward lines, while also keeping in mind that we are working with very limited sample sizes at 5v5.

canadiens vs lightning team stats

The first thing we have to acknowledge is that the numbers behind the first two games are odd. Well, maybe “odd” isn’t the right word, but they’re clearly based on limited data.

Such is life when analyzing in the playoffs.

With this in mind, built-in numbers were developed to get a better idea of how a team—or individual—is performing in this scenario: limited data.

As always, we will discuss four different statistics. The first is Corsi For (CF%), which I often label as ‘shot share’ because it’s so descriptive, but in this case I’ve used the abbreviated version for ease of viewing. We’ll also discuss Montreal’s share of high-danger scoring chances (HDCF%), their expected goal share (xGF%), and actual goal share (GF%) at 5v5.

Through two games, the Lightning have outscored the Habs by a considerable margin, a fact that will be reflected when evaluating the forward lines. The Canadians have managed to control only 39.7% of the shots (66-100), which can only be called worrying.

The Habs have also only managed to score two goals at 5v5, both of which were provided by fourth-line forward Josh Anderson. Overall, the Lightning haven’t lit the lamp as well at 5v5, but they have scored twice as many goals as the Habs.

As far as expected goals go, they represent a very encouraging split for Montreal. The Canadians have gained a considerable advantage and have controlled approximately 54% of the expected targets.

One reason behind the discrepancy in expected goals and shot share is that the Canadiens have done an excellent job of controlling high-danger chances, shooting 72% (18-7). This isn’t just a huge positive, it’s a complete reversal of Montreal’s fortunes with high-quality scoring opportunities. Traditionally, the Habs struggle to generate many quality scoring chances regardless of their opponents.

Canadiens forward lines at 5v5

The biggest issue facing the Habs is clearly their lack of goals at 5v5. If the Canadiens are to have success in this series, the first line in particular needs to start scoring at 5v5.

You could argue that the second and third lines also need to provide some semblance of offense, but the onus is on the team’s best forward to move the ball at 5v5. Fortunately, they are doing a good job at controlling the chances, but the volume is not enough to compensate for their lack of shooting luck.

For the most part, whenever head coach Martin St-Louis puts the first line on the ice, John Cooper immediately counters with a Brandon Hagel, Anthony Cirelli and Jake Guentzel line, which has outscored the Habs 3-0 at 5v5.

Additionally, only one line has managed to control 50% of the shots, which is another team-wide concern. This is reduced by the overall share of high-quality scoring chances, which is reflected in expected goals.

Montreal Canadiens Brass Tacks

Unfortunately for the Habs, shot quantity is very important when it comes to winning a series. Although they have the edge in quality, a greater volume of shots will be necessary if they want to start scoring more goals at 5v5.

If the Canadiens can manage to put a few more pucks on net, the rest of the numbers suggest they will hold a significant advantage in the remaining games of the series, perhaps enough to pick up a win against a more experienced opponent.

To do that, they’ll have to rely on their first line to resume the dominance they showed on a nightly basis during the regular season, while also getting a little help from St. Louis, who will now have their last change as the series returns to the Bell Center.

Keeping Tampa Bay’s top line devoid of their own top players is probably the best path to success.

G1 lines, pills, how to watch

The Montreal Canadiens face the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game One of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs on Sunday, with puck drop scheduled for 5:45 p.m. ET.

The Habs should be considered the underdogs, although it’s important to remember that they were the better team at controlling shots whenever these two met. To ensure some semblance of stability, the Canadiens will once again rely on a top line of Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkowski and Cole Caufield, while trying to avoid Tampa Bay’s top shutdown line.

Special teams are expected to play a significant role in the first round, and not just because it is a short series. The Canadiens are a top 10 team with the man-advantage, while the Lightning dominate whenever they are on the penalty kill. The organization that succeeds in achieving success can achieve a significant profit.

The earlier start time could also present a challenge for Montreal, a team that typically needs some type of adversity before it can respond. He can fly during the regular season, but not in the playoffs, especially against an experienced club like the Lightning.

Lineup Changes

It appears that Brendan Gallagher, David Rickenbacker, Samuel Montembeault, Jacob Fowler, Adam Engstrom, and Joe Veleno will miss Sunday’s game as healthy scratches, although Fowler is expected to serve as Jacob Dobbs’ backup.

If any additional lineup notes are available, we will revise the projected lineup prior to puck drop.

Montreal Canadiens Projected Lineup

Cole Coffield – Nick Suzuki – Juraj Slafkowski

  • Game Six, Time TBD, Friday, May 1, Bell Center
  • Game Seven, Time TBD, Sunday, May 3, Benchmark International Arena.

You’ll notice that they have not yet revealed the exact start date for Games Five, Six and Seven (if necessary). There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to renting out arenas, and it seems like the logistics aren’t fully understood by the NHL yet.

Montreal Canadiens playoff lineup

The Montreal Canadiens lineup was very similar to the one that was introduced earlier in the week, although it should be noted that Caden Guhle ran with Lane Hutson, not Alexander Carrier.

Things could change, but as of now, it appears the Canadiens will enter the NHL playoffs with players like Brendan Gallagher, Joe Velano and Adam Engstrom, and David Rickenbacker watching the game from the press box as healthy scratches.

It’s also quite obvious that losing defenseman Noah Dobson will make matters more difficult for the Canadiens, but they are far from the only team dealing with life without one of their best blueliners.

Tampa Bay Lightning playoff lineup

Former Norris Trophy winner Victor Hedman will miss Sunday’s series opener, and is unlikely to attend a hockey game in the near future.

First round start date, playoff pump up, lines

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Thursday.

montreal canadiens news

We now know when the Habs and Lightning will play Game One of their first-round series. Well, we know what day it will be on Sunday, but the league has not released the actual start time yet. Oh, and we haven’t yet been advised when games two, three, four, five, six or seven will take place. Classic NHL! [NHL Playoff Schedule: Canadiens Vs. Lightning Begins Sunday]

ICYMI: There is no doubt, the Tampa Bay Lightning have been the better team at 5v5 this season. However, when the numbers between Montreal and the Lightning are evaluated against each other in their four games, the discrepancy is less noticeable, with the Canadiens managing to control more shots than the Bolts. [Playoff Preview: Canadiens Vs. Lightning Head-To-Head]

Check out this awesome playoff pump-up video made by Danielle Lapierre! There was a time when editing at this level was reserved for a few expensive videos per year, but now we’re seeing fan-driven content that trumps the content produced by teams, which is nothing short of excellent. Keep up the good work, Danielle!

I’m not saying Lane Hutson should win the Norris Trophy, but it’s a little ridiculous that he’s not ranked among the top candidates by the NHL voters. Most data-based analysis shows that Hutson should be considered one of the front-runners when it comes to selecting the best defenseman in the league.

Even though it seems clear that the Canadiens do not intend to use Patrik Laine any time soon, head coach Martin Saint-Louis is keeping a close eye on the situation, which may not be easy for the Finnish forward.

As for players looking to make their mark, rookie David Rickenbacker spent a lot of time with skills coach Adam Nicholls on Thursday.

Shockingly or not, Hutson and Ivan Demidov were among the first players to jump onto the ice during practice.

The Washington Capitals (42-30-9) are officially eliminated after Tuesday night. They conclude the 2025–26 season with a road matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets (40–29–12) at Nationwide Arena.

The puck drops at 7:00 pm ET.

The Capitals are officially eliminated from playoff contention after Philadelphia beat Carolina on Monday. That game required a shootout where the Flyers emerged victorious and secured themselves a spot in the playoffs.

Philadelphia also scored 96 points, while the Capitals could only score a maximum of 95 points. The Flyers’ win also resulted in Columbus being eliminated.

As a result, the Capitals would miss the playoffs for the first time under head coach Spencer Carberry. Prior to Carberry’s appointment, the team had missed the postseason in the spring of 2023.

Tuesday’s match could also be the last match of veteran captain Alex Ovechkin. The 40-year-old will make a decision on his future this summer.

The Capitals continued their three-game winning streak in their season finale on Tuesday. They won a home set with the playoff-bound Pittsburgh Penguins last weekend.

Sunday’s game was emotional for Ovechkin, who played perhaps his final home game at Capital One Arena. He even got a chance to face rival Sidney Crosby for the 100th time (75th in the regular season).

The Capitals picked up a 3-0 home win over Pittsburgh on Sunday. Logan Thompson made 24 saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

Trevor van Riemsdyk broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the second period. Then, Connor McMichael scored two goals in the third, including an empty-netter.

Lines, notes, and how to watch vs. Islanders

The last one. After six difficult months of a shortened schedule due to the Olympics, a schedule featuring three games in four days (with travel), the regular season has ended. With that last game, the Carolina Hurricanes will face the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.

The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT.

In the Hurricanes’ last game, they took over the top spot in the Eastern Conference by scoring one point in a shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. With the Flyers’ win, they clinched their spot in the playoffs – third in the Metropolitan Division – and have their only matchup set for the postseason, as they will play the Pittsburgh Penguins, who finished second in the division.

However, an hour before the start of the last game, it was announced that two players had been recalled from the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves: the goaltender long believed to miss the entire season, and the Wolves’ top scorer.

After only being in the crease for three periods through two games in the AHL, Pyotr Kochetkov’s conditioning stint came to an end. Meanwhile, two-way forward and playmaker, Felix Unger Sorum may get his NHL debut in the upcoming game.

As far as the islanders are concerned, they have had to face it very badly. The day after the last game with the Hurricanes, he removed Patrick Roy from the head coach role, and brought in former Dallas Stars head coach, Peter DeBoer, to fill his place behind the bench.

If that wasn’t enough of a blow, their playoff dreams vanished just 55 seconds into their last game, as the Montreal Canadiens became their nightmare in the second round. In the end, the Islanders scored a goal, but it was not enough. The momentum was claimed by the Canadiens, spurred by chants of Olé, Olé, Olé from fans arriving at UBS Arena. It was honestly pretty sad – and I don’t mean it sarcastic.

in the crease

For Carolina, it’s not certain who will be in net. However, there is a general expectation that the position will be filled by the same man who was just recalled on Monday, Pyotr Kochetkov. In his time with Wolves, he looked quite sharp, but even so, he did not play the full sixty minutes.

As usual, Frederik Andersen will get the start. However, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Kochetkov come to the crease. This season, Kochetkov has a save percentage of .899 with a goals-against average of 2.33, en route to a 6-2-0 record.

As for the Islanders, they have relied heavily on Ilya Sorokin, who has started 54 of their 81 games. I think they’ll probably turn to him to finish with game numbers. 82. This season, he has a save percentage of .906 with a goals-against average of 2.68 with a 29-24-2 record.

storm game notes

Due to absent practices and frequent player swaps at this point in the season, the Hurricanes’ lineup for Tuesday’s game remains uncertain.

With the new CBA, the Hurricanes’ schedule will include two additional regular season games and only four preseason games next season. This is expected to be the final 82-game season league-wide.

The last time the Hurricanes finished top of the Eastern Conference was in the 2005–06 season.

How to View Lines, Notes and Flyers Vs.

The Carolina Hurricanes will face the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday in a Metropolitan Division matchup that should make a lot of sense for the home team, who have been dominating in the postseason as they try to hold off two other undefeated teams – the Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals.

The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT.

In his previous games…

On Saturday, the Hurricanes won 4–1 against the Utah Mammoth in their final Western Conference matchup of the regular season. In doing so, Andrei Svechnikov reached an all-time high of 31 goals for the first time in his NHL career. Additionally, Jordan Staal joined the 20-goal club, bringing the total number of Hurricanes players to seven. It was the first time since the 2015–16 season that he had reached this milestone.

As the game concluded, an empty net goal scored by Sean Walker broke a record in Hurricanes history, giving the Hurricanes their most goals in a regular season campaign with 287, surpassing the 2005–06 season’s 286.

However, there was another special occasion that highlighted the night, when Jakob Slavin and his brother Josiah skated together in their first regular season NHL game. She and her family had some really interesting thoughts to share about this special moment – you can read all about it here!

Still, the Slavin duo won’t be in Monday’s game. On Sunday, Josiah was reassigned to the Chicago Wolves.

On the other side of the ice, the Flyers – against all odds – managed to get ahead of the crowd and move into third place in the Metro, as the Atlantic Division’s Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators have already claimed both Eastern Conference wild cards.

The arrival of prospect Porter Martone from Michigan State University has been a huge boon for the Spartans after their NCAA hockey championship loss to the Wisconsin Badgers in late March. In only seven games with the big club, Martone has averaged one point per game, scored three goals and has already collected four assists. He has remained goalless in only two matches so far.

in the crease

In their last game, the Hurricanes broke form as they ran out Frederik Andersen twice in a row, starting against the Chicago Wolves and then against the Mammoth. That being said, Brandon Bussey is the most likely option for Monday’s matchup with the Flyers. His save percentage this season is .890, with a goals-against average of 2.52 with a 30-6-1 record.

Meanwhile, the Flyers have leaned heavily on Daniel Vladar. Throughout the season, he has borne the brunt of the starts with 49 starts to Samuel Ersson’s 28. His numbers have also been favorable compared to the young netminder.

The Flyers haven’t shied away from consistently giving a starting goaltender, and there’s a good chance they’ll get the remaining two for Philadelphia this season. Vladar has a save percentage of .904 this season, with a goals-against average of 2.47 with a 27-14-7 record.

Philadelphia Flyers Penalty Kill: 77.6% (21st)

storm game notes

The Hurricanes have only two games remaining in the regular season: Monday vs. the Flyers and Tuesday vs. the New York Islanders – both Metropolitan Division teams.

Recently, it has been difficult to maintain the Hurricanes’ lineup due to a lack of practice and frequent rest of players in preparation for the postseason. Therefore, the above lineup is merely a projection based on the lines played in the previous game.

The Washington Capitals (41-30-9) look to keep their playoff hopes alive with a weekend sweep. They return home to host the Pittsburgh Penguins (41-23-16) on Sunday afternoon at Capital One Arena.

Puck drops at 3:00 PM ET.

The Capitals will play their final home game of the regular season. They will continue to fight for their playoff lives as they look to win three in a row.

The Capitals emerged victorious on Saturday with a 6-3 win at Pittsburgh. Their rookie quartet scored three goals and eight points in the win.

Pittsburgh’s captains also didn’t match up with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson. Nevertheless, the Penguins have already secured second place in the Metropolitan Division.

Saturday’s game was supposed to be the 75th regular season (100th including playoffs) meeting between Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Despite this, Ovechkin scored an empty-netter and was given a standing ovation from the Steel City.

Multiple Capitals players reached personal milestones in Saturday’s win. The biggest being Ilya Protas recording his first NHL goal with three points.

Tom Wilson scored 30 goals in the season for the second consecutive year, while Aliaksei Protas scored 25 goals for the second consecutive year. Ryan Leonard became the eighth Capitals rookie – the first since Ovechkin in 2005–06 – to score 20 goals in a season.

Cole Hutson finished with two assists, while Justin Sourdiff had an assist on Leonard’s second goal. Meanwhile, Logan Thompson also made just nine saves to record his 30th win of the season.

Ottawa defeated the Senators 4–0, which also gave the Capitals some help on the scoreboard out of town. However, Columbus and Philadelphia both won, further diminishing Washington’s playoff chances.

Lines, Notes, Bullets, and How to See Versus Mammoth

On Saturday, the Carolina Hurricanes will continue their drive west to face the Utah Mammoth – their final Western Conference matchup of the regular season.

The game is scheduled for 5:00 pm EDT.

In the Hurricanes’ last game against the Chicago Blackhawks, he received assists from four Chicago Wolves players in Josiah Slavin, Skyler Brind’Amour, Bradley Nadeau and Charles-Alexis Legault.

Not only did the Hurricanes defeat the Blackhawks with half their usual roster, but they did so in style as they achieved more than a half-dozen milestones in the 7-2 victory. You can read all about it here!

Meanwhile, in the Mammoth’s last game, they shocked the Nashville Predators with a 4–1 win in their quest for a Wild Card spot. Not only did they cause a bit of havoc for their Central Division rivals, but along with the Anaheim Ducks defeating the San Jose Sharks, the Mammoth were able to clinch a playoff berth for the first time in franchise history.

Due to both teams’ current status as playoff-bound teams, their lineups gradually remain vague, as practices move toward optionality and final gameday choices only come into focus moments before puck drop.

in the crease

For the Hurricanes, the starting goaltender is likely to be Brandon Bussey, due to the alternate tandem. Bussey had previously faced them during the Hurricanes’ historic comeback during Whalers Night in January, overcoming a two-goal deficit as they scored three goals in the final two minutes to win the game in regulation – making them only the third team in NHL history to accomplish this feat. Bussey has a .890 save percentage this season with a 30-6-1 record and a goals-against average of 2.52.

As for the Mammoth, Karel Vejmelka has made 75 percent of the starts for Utah this season, including the last four in a row. For this reason, I believe the Mammoth will likely turn to Vitek Vanecek for the start against Carolina. He has a save percentage of .885 this season, with a goals-against average of 2.87 with a 5-11-3 record.

storm game notes

This season, it appears the Hurricanes are out of the running for the President’s Trophy this season. Following the Colorado Avalanche’s 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night, the West’s best players lifted the trophy as they secured their 114th point in the standings. Considering the curse that seems to be behind the trophy, this is a good thing for Carolina.

Head coach Rod Brind’Amour spoke to the media regarding the status of players who were taken out of the lineup in the previous game against the Blackhawks. He said some of them had been ‘evacuated’ but could leave if needed.

The Washington Capitals (40-30-9) begin a weekend home-and-home set with the Pittsburgh Penguins (41-22-16). The first game will be Saturday afternoon at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

Puck drops at 3:00 PM ET.

Following Saturday’s game, the Capitals will host the Penguins at Capital One Arena on Sunday afternoon. Then, Washington concludes the regular season with a road matchup at Columbus on Tuesday.

Saturday’s game is extra special because it marks the 100th meeting between Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Both captains have been playing in the NHL since 2005. However, people are speculating whether these next two meetings between Ovechkin and Crosby will be the last.

Last week, Ovechkin recently spoke with Capitals radio announcer John Walton about his future. The Great 8 said a decision would be made during this summer’s offseason.

The Capitals are hoping to continue Ovechkin’s career in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They kept their chances alive with a 4-0 shutout win over Toronto on Wednesday.

Aliaksi’s younger brother Ilya Protas made his Capitals debut and recorded his first NHL point. Meanwhile, Logan Thompson made 21 saves for his third shutout of the season.

Ovechkin and Crosby met for the first time in the regular season on November 22, 2005 in Pittsburgh. The Penguins won that game 5–4, as they led 4–0 after the opening period.

The Ovechkin–Crosby rivalry is considered one of the greatest in NHL and North American pro sports history. This era covers 40 percent of Washington’s franchise history and more than a third of Pittsburgh’s 58-season NHL history.

Devils Game 79 vs. Penguins; How to view lines, notes and more

The New Jersey Devils (40-35-3, 83 points) will try to prevent the Pittsburgh Penguins (40-22-16) from making the Stanley Cup playoffs when the Metropolitan Division rivals face off at the Prudential Center on Thursday.

The Devils fell out of playoff contention with a 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at the Rock on Tuesday. Still, New Jersey is 12-6-1 in their last 19 games.

The Penguins are 5-2 in their last seven games and have been dominant on offense. Pittsburgh has 36 goals in that span and has never scored fewer than three goals in any game.

Here’s what could turn out to be a high-scoring affair in Newark on Thursday.

What to Know vs Penguins

  • The Devils are 1-2 against Pittsburgh this season and have gone 9-3 in their last three games.
  • Devils forward Cody Glass will enter Thursday’s game on a two-game goal streak and has three goals heading into the April 4 game

Canadiens preview: Injured players returning, possible new lines

The Montreal Canadiens (45-22-10) will face the Florida Panthers (37-37-3) on Tuesday, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

This will be the third and final time these teams face each other this year, with the Canadiens currently holding a 2–0 lead in games won. They defeated the Panthers 3–2 in late December, as well as 6–2 in early January, however, it should be noted that veteran netminder Samuel Montebault started both games.

He is no longer considered a starter in Montreal, having been taken over by the more promising play of rookie netminders Jacob Fowler and Jacob Dobbs.

Given that Fowler started Sunday night’s game against the New Jersey Devils, we’re expecting his counterpart to face the Panthers on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old Dobbs is on a five-game winning streak with his last loss coming on March 19 against the Detroit Red Wings. It’s also worth noting that he has stopped 171 out of 179 shots in the last five games.

As for the Panthers, they will have to make do without Matthew Tkachuk, who will be with his wife as they await the birth of their child.

Lineup Changes

It’s likely we’ll see some significant lineup changes for the Canadiens, as both Kirby Dach and Alexandre Texier are very close to returning to action. According to Anthony Martino, they will be in uniform, which will force head coach Martin St-Louis to make some important roster decisions before puck drop.

Dach played on the first line for a spell, but it’s unlikely St.-Louis will want to break up one of the best trios in the NHL again. There is a legitimate possibility that he will place Dach in the second row, although it remains to be seen whether it will be on the wing or in the centre.

If Saint-Louis wants to use Dach as a winger, there is a chance that Alex Newhook could be moved from the second row, although this would be a difficult decision to accept as he has been playing quite well since recovering from his ankle injury.

As for Texier, if he plays, he will likely be slotted into a bottom six role, with Joe Velano and Brendan Gallagher being the players who will likely make way for his presence.

Ideally, the pairing of Zach Bolduc and Jake Evans remains intact, as it has been one of Montreal’s best combinations during their push for the playoffs.

We will update the projected Canadiens lineup with new information as it becomes available.

Montreal Canadiens Projected Lineup

Lines, Notes, and How to Watch vs. the Bruins

The Carolina Hurricanes welcome the Boston Bruins to Raleigh for the final home game of the season in what will be the final game of a tough road trip for the wild card-grabbing Bruins, who have picked up just one point in the three games played, scoring only one goal in each match.

The game, which will be Fan Appreciation Night at the Lenovo Center, is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT.

However, the last game was a tough one in itself for the Hurricanes. Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook were both absent for undisclosed reasons against the Ottawa Senators, leading to the return of Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Nicolas Deslauriers to the lineup.

The first period was fairly good, with twenty minutes of play ending with a tie, but things soon unraveled as the Hurricanes were unable to match the immediate level of the frustrated Ottawa team. Alas, at least Taylor Hall – who spent a little more than two seasons with the Bruins – scored his 300th career goal. You can read all about it here!

in the crease

For the Hurricanes, Brandon Bussey will be the likely starter due to the alternate tandem. It would be a reunion of sorts, potentially marking Busey’s first game against the team that signed him to his first NHL contract in 2022. He has a save percentage of .894 this season with a goals-against average of 2.46 in a 29-6-1 record.

Meanwhile, the Bruins are expected to turn to Jeremy Swayman to focus on the pipes after Joonas Korpisalo played his last game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Swayman has borne the brunt of the starts for Boston this season, appearing in 51 of the 78 games played so far. This season he has a save percentage of .907 with a goals-against average of 2.70 with a 30-17-4 record.

storm game notes

With only four games remaining in the regular season, the Hurricanes will likely make roster adjustments to manage load in preparation for the playoffs. Until the puck drops, all lineups are mere guesses — but that’s especially true in upcoming sets of games.

In the previous game, Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook were both ruled out of the starting lineup for undisclosed reasons, and their return remains uncertain.

The Washington Capitals (39-29-9) finished their weekend set of back-to-backs. They will visit the New York Rangers (32-26-9) at Madison Square Garden on Easter Sunday.

The puck drops at 7:00 pm ET.

In addition to the game being shown on ESPN, you can also watch Capitals-Rangers on Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney+. There will be an alternate “Inside Out Classic” animated broadcast with characters from the Disney/Pixar film inside out.

The Capitals are off to a strong start with a 6-2 home win over Buffalo on Saturday. Washington opened the game with three goals against a Sabers team that had already clinched their spot in the playoffs since 2011.

The Capitals also got help from other teams to keep their playoff hopes alive with five games remaining. The team is now one point behind the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Capitals’ three first-period goals ended Buffalo netminder Alex Lyon’s night early. Then Rasmus Dahlin and Beck Malensteen cut the Sabres’ deficit to 3–2.

Nevertheless, Aliaksei Protas, Ryan Leonard and Tom Wilson scored three more goals to seal it for the Capitals. Logan Thompson also made his 10th consecutive start and stopped 37 of 39 shots that came his way.

Meanwhile, the Rangers have not achieved much this season under new head coach Mike Sullivan. While they enter Sunday’s game in last place in the East, New York has gone 4-1-0 in their last five games.

The last time the Capitals visited Madison Square Garden was October 12, which was also the second half of a back-to-back set. Washington won 1–0 thanks to 35 saves by Charlie Lindgren and a second-period goal by Anthony Beauvillier.

How to see between lines, notes and senators

Just 22 hours after the puck drops at the Lenovo Center for an Easter Sunday matchup, the Carolina Hurricanes will face the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre. Carolina was the first team to clinch a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, while the Senators remained in the bottom wild card.

The game is scheduled for 5:00 pm EDT.

In the Hurricanes’ last game, they displayed strong play and physical dominance to defeat a hungry New York Islanders team 4–3. The Islanders, who are in third place in the Metropolitan Division, are just one point ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers.

In the game, Seth Jarvis unloaded a three-point game, including two goals and a shorthanded assist, and almost topped it with a hat trick during an empty net situation, although the puck failed to find the net on both of his attempts. Additionally, Sebastian Aho’s shorthanded goal gave the Hurricanes sole possession of the most shorthanded goals scored across the league, passing the Calgary Flames with his 12th goal.

Meanwhile, Brandon Bussey stood strong at the net, despite long periods between shots. The Hurricanes managed the puck exceptionally well, making 81 shot attempts (40 shots on goal) while allowing only 32 (15 shots on goal).

After the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour congratulated his group for their strong effort.

“There was a bit of confusion at the last minute, but overall, I can’t say much,” he told the media. “It was pretty impressive considering what was at stake. I thought our guys played how we wanted, and tonight we got what we deserved.”

As for the Senators, their last game was a blowout loss to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. Beaten 4–1, the only Senators player to find twine was Drake Batherson with less than four minutes left in the game.

in the crease

As for the Hurricanes, expect them to turn to Frederik Andersen to provide focus in the crease after Bussey takes up the pipe on Saturday. This season he has a save percentage of .871 with a goals-against average of 3.09 with a 14-13-5 record.

Meanwhile, the Senators have started Linus Ullmark in three consecutive games, but none have been back-to-back. The likely starting goalie will be former Hurricane goaltender James Reimer, who has played in both of the Senators’ games against Carolina this season. His save percentage this season is .882, with a goals-against average of 2.42 with a 6-4-1 record.

Lines, notes, and how to watch vs. Islanders

On Saturday, the Carolina Hurricanes begin a back-to-back set during the Easter holidays, starting with the New York Islanders at home, and traveling to face the Ottawa Senators less than 24 hours later.

The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT.

The Hurricanes’ last game was one of their most impressive games of the season, as they tied the franchise record for fewest shots allowed (10) in a game. They won 5–1 over the Columbus Blue Jackets and clinched their spot in the playoffs.

The game also included a shorthanded goal from Alexander Nikishin, becoming the first rookie defenseman in franchise history to do so, tying Jamie McBain for the most points by a rookie defenseman in Hurricanes history, and tying the team for the most shorthanded goals this season with the Calgary Flames. You can read all about the game here!

On Friday, the Hurricanes did not practice, and thus, there is little time left for the projected lineup. However, now that the Hurricanes have clinched a postseason berth, there is a strong possibility that a few different guys will log ice time while the more productive players get rest over the next seven games.

Meanwhile, the Islanders continue to fight for their spot in the playoffs after missing out last season. They will head into Raleigh with a loss after their Metropolitan Division rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, defeated them 4-1 on Friday. While they are in third place in the Metro Division, they are only one point ahead of the Blue Jackets, who are not even in the wild-card position.

in the crease

For the Hurricanes, they will likely start Brandon Bussey in net. After some decline in numbers and performance, he came up with the catch in his last start – keeping the Hurricanes in the game in a loss against the Blue Jackets. His save percentage this season is .895, with a goals-against average of 2.44, en route to a 28-6-1 record.

As for the Islanders, they are expected to start David Rittich, as Ilya Sorokin did on Friday against the Flyers. This season, Rittich has a save percentage of .894 with a goals against average of 2.78 with a 14-9-3 record.

In the Hurricanes’ last game, they clinched their eighth consecutive playoff berth. Of all the teams in the league, only the Colorado Avalanche, Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs have longer active playoff appearance streaks (though the Leafs will finish at nine, as they were eliminated from contention by the San Jose Sharks on Thursday).

After Saturday, the Hurricanes will play only one more game at Lenovo Center this regular season, on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins, the Hurricanes’ annual Fan Appreciation Night.

Washington Capitals (38-28-9) Take a quick trip up I-95 on Thursday night. They head to Newark to face the New Jersey Devils (38-34-2) at the Prudential Center.

The puck drops at 7:30 pm ET.

The Capitals will play the first of seven matches in the month of April. The team currently sits in 12th place in the East, but are three points off a playoff spot.

The Capitals entered Thursday on a three-match winning streak, their third since late January. However, Washington must win with seven games remaining if it is to reach the playoffs.

The Capitals closed out the month of March with a 6-4 win over Philadelphia on Tuesday. Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson both reached milestones as they each recorded two goals.

Ovechkin’s first tally gave him the 20th 30-goal season of his career, as he now has 928 total goals. Meanwhile, Wilson was playing in his 900th NHL game as his two long matches made his night even more memorable.

The Capitals also got on the power play twice thanks to Jacob Chirkrun and Ryan Leonard. Pierre-Luc Dubois also finished the night with three assists, including two on the man advantage.

Meanwhile, New Jersey lost its first two games after the Olympic break, but has since gone 10-5-0. The Devils are averaging 3.73 goals per game, the fourth-best rate in the NHL.

New Jersey center Jack Hughes is on a high after winning gold for Team USA in Milan. He has 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) since the break, which ties him for fourth in the NHL.

Tuesday is the first step into the madness, as the Hurricanes face the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

The game, which will be locked to ESPN+ and Hulu, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT.

In the Hurricanes’ last game, they suffered a blowout loss to the Montreal Canadiens, who refused to leave Carolina without a single point, effectively clinching the season series against the Hurricanes. The game included a wild 100 shot attempt from Carolina – their highest of the season – but they were unable to find the twine more than once. The Canadiens ate up everything, blocked everything and ultimately finished the game with a 3-1 score. Montreal’s 32 blocked shots were the most by any team this season. You can read all about it here!

Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets have faced a number of ups and downs recently. Last Tuesday, they were in second place in the Metro Division – something they had not reached this late in the season since 2017. Now, they are fighting in the wild-card position. The last week has not been good for them, as they have not been able to win a single one of their last three matches.

In their game on Sunday against the Boston Bruins, who forced overtime and came back to win, Mathieu Ollivier left with an upper body injury. On Monday, they recalled Luca Del Bell Belluz, pointing to the possibility that the Blue Jackets’ bruiser will be unavailable against the Hurricanes.

in the crease

If they continue to move through the rotation, the Hurricanes will likely find Brandon Bussey in the net. His save percentage is .894, with a goals-against average of 2.45 en route to a 27-6-1 record.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets have been struggling to adjust to the rotation and have relied heavily on their young netminder, Jett Greaves, who has played in 48 games compared to Elvis Merzlikins’ 29. They’ll likely turn to Greaves again on Tuesday. His save percentage this season is .910, with a goals-against average of 2.56 with a 24-14-9 record.

Lines, Notes, Bullets, and How to Watch vs. the Canadiens

On Sunday, the Carolina Hurricanes will kick off their back-to-back homestand, facing the Montreal Canadiens for the second time in less than a week, and just 24 hours after their game with the New Jersey Devils. This game will not only be one of four remaining home games of the regular season, but will also honor veterans for their annual military appreciation night.

The game is scheduled for 5:00 pm EDT.

In the Hurricanes’ last game, they defeated the Devils 5–2 to complete their season, with Shayne Gostisbeer returning from injury, a goal for the third consecutive game for Nikolaj Ehlers and the 30th goal of the season for Seth Jarvis. You can check out the recap here!

Meanwhile, the Canadiens are in the midst of a five-game road trip, which begins on Saturday against the Nashville Predators. In that game, after the Canadiens scored four consecutive goals (including captain Nick Suzuki’s assist number 300), the Predators only got on the board at the end of the third period, giving Jacob Fowler the second NHL shutout of his career.

in the crease

With Brandon Bussy set to play Saturday, Frederik Andersen is almost certain to start against the Canadiens Sunday. Anderson’s record against the Canadiens was perfect, with a slight dip in the previous game – a 5–2 loss – but still, he has won nine of the 11 games he has played against them in his career. Anderson has a save percentage of .871 this season, with a 13-12-5 record and a goals-against average of 3.15.

On the other side of the ice, the Canadiens will undoubtedly opt to keep Jacob Dobbs in net, as Fowler covered the game against the Predators. In his last game against Carolina, he had the best performance of his young career, and his most saves ever in an NHL game. This season, he has a save percentage of .898 with a goals-against average of 2.83 with a 24-8-4 record.

storm game notes

After missing nine consecutive games, Shayne Gostisbier returned to the lineup for a two-point game (1G, 1A) on Saturday.

With a shorthanded, empty net goal in the game against the Devils, Seth Jarvis scored his third consecutive 30-goal goal of the season. He is only the sixth player in franchise history to achieve this feat.

There are only four more home games remaining in the Hurricanes’ regular season, and three of them are theme nights (Military Appreciation Night, Grateful Dead Night, Fan Appreciation Night).

The Washington Capitals (36-28-9) conclude their final multi-game road trip of the 2025-26 season. They visit the Vegas Golden Knights (32-26-15) on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.

The puck drops at 10:30 pm ET.

The Capitals opened the road trip with a 3-0 loss to St. Louis on Tuesday. It seemed as if they were headed for consecutive setbacks when they fell 3-1 to Utah on Thursday.

However, the Capitals bounced back with two goals from Alex Ovechkin in the second period, followed by four more goals in the third. Washington swept Utah with a convincing 7–4 victory.

Ovechkin recorded the 34th hat trick of his career when he clinched the game with an empty-netter in the final minute. Ivan Miroshnichenko also scored twice in the first multi-goal game of his NHL career.

Utah forward Brandon Tanev pushed Matt Roy into the boards first with the intent to injure. Due to this, Tom Wilson told Tanev his feelings. However, Wilson was given a double minor penalty for roughing, while Tanev was given just a minor penalty for boarding.

Later in the game, Brandon Duhaime took off Tanev’s gloves after Ovechkin’s second goal with the game tied at 3–3. Then, Wilson got involved in another fight as he and Lawson Crouse got involved.

Meanwhile, Vegas is currently in third place in the Pacific Division standings. However, the Golden Knights are 1-4-1 heading into Saturday’s game in their last six games.

The Capitals won the last match against Vegas 3-2 at home. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored two goals, while Logan Thompson recorded 24 saves against his former team.

Lines, Notes and How to See Versus Devils

There are only ten games left for the Carolina Hurricanes in the regular season as they face the New Jersey Devils to begin the first half of a back-to-back home set on Saturday evening.

The game is scheduled for 5:00 pm EDT.

In the Hurricanes’ last game, they faced a goaltender in Jacob Dobbs of the Montreal Canadiens. Despite maintaining pressure and creating nearly 30 quality scoring chances on 44 shots on goal, the Hurricanes were only able to score two goals, and they lost 5–2. It was the most single-game saves by Dobbs in his NHL career. You can read the full analysis on that whole fiasco here.

Meanwhile, the Devils will come to Carolina riding a two-game winning streak. This will be their fourth and final clash with the Hurricanes this season, a series in which the Hurricanes have won all three so far, including a natural hat-trick from Andrei Svechnikov.

in the crease

During practice on Friday, Brandon Bussey had the starting crease and will likely get the start. He has played only one game against the Devils in his career. In that game, he helped the Hurricanes win 3–1. Bussey has a save percentage of .894 with a goals-against average of 2.47 in a 26-6-1 record.

Meanwhile, Jacob Markstrom is likely to get the start for the Devils. This season he has a save percentage of .884 with a goals-against average of 3.07 with a 22-16-1 record.

storm game notes

During practice on Friday, Shayne Gostisbehere returned to the ice, ditching the non-contact gear for standard. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour did not provide specifics when speaking to the media, but sounded optimistic.

If Gostisbehere does not play against the Devils, Mike Reilly will likely play in his place again.

After Saturday’s 5 p.m. game, the Hurricanes will have to turn right around and play the Canadiens again 24 hours later in a back-to-back home set.

Devils Game 71 vs. Predators; How to view lines, notes and more

The New Jersey Devils (36-32-2, 74 points) head to Music City to take on the Nashville Predators (34-28-9, 77 points) and are feeling pretty good about themselves after defeating the second-place Dallas Stars earlier this week.

After a season of tough disappointments, the Devils finally look like the team we expected in 2025-26. Too bad it’s too little, too late.

Meanwhile, the Predators themselves are playing well, winners of five consecutive games and desperate to hold on to the second wild card spot in the West.

There is a lot at stake for Nashville, while there is nothing at stake for New Jersey.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to Know vs Predators

— The Devils and Nashville concluded their 2025–26 regular season series when the Devils won 3–2 overtime against the Preds at the Rock on January 29, 2026.

-Nico Hischier recorded an overtime goal in the first matchup against Nashville this season, while Dougie Hamilton and Jesper Bratt also found the net in the contest.

-Goaltender Jacob Markstrom recorded 27 saves on 29 shots in the overtime win.

-The Devils have a 2-3-0 record in Nashville since 2019-20, but the team has won its last two road contests in the Music City since 2023-24.

How to view lines, notes and more

The Washington Capitals (35-27-9) begin their final multi-game road trip of the 2025-26 season. Their first stop is the Midwest where they visit the St. Louis Blues (28-30-11) on Tuesday night at the Enterprise Center.

The puck drops at 8:00 PM ET.

The Capitals will play their final three games on the trip outside the Eastern Time Zone. The team enters Tuesday in St. Louis on a five-game point streak (3-0-2).

The Capitals recently concluded a four-game homestand with a 3-2 OT loss against Colorado, the NHL’s top team. Washington took a 1–0 lead into the third period, but with the score tied 2–2, the game required OT.

Captain Alex Ovechkin made more history as he recorded the game-tying power-play goal in the third. The 40-year-old joins Wayne Gretzky as the only other players to score 1,000 combined goals in the regular season and playoffs.

Ovechkin’s power-play goal marked the first goal recorded at home this season. Additionally, if you exclude goals scored in the playoffs, The Great 8 now has 923 career goals.

The Capitals still have a long way to go if they want to reach the playoffs this season. The team is currently six points behind the Islanders for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile, St. Louis is far behind in the Western Conference standings. The Blues are eight points behind Nashville for the second wild card spot.

St. Louis went from last October 9 to March 1 without earning more than two wins in its season opener. However, the Blues entered Tuesday with an impressive record of 7-1-2 in their last 10 games.

How to See Lines, Notes, Bullets, and Penguin Vs.

For the third time in twelve days, the Carolina Hurricanes will face the Pittsburgh Penguins, but this time, at 3:00 PM EDT at PPG Paints Arena for a matinee match.

The two latest games between them have been some of the most entertaining games of the season.

In those recent contests, the victory was claimed by Carolina in overtime, but Pittsburgh still held on for some crucial points at the end of the regular season against the Metropolitan Division leader.

You can read all about their March 10th game here, and about their March 18th game here – it’s worth it!

As someone who enjoys both teams, I can’t deny that I like it – and I know many fans of both fans who like it too. This rivalry coming so close to the postseason, bringing playoff energy, has been incredible.

Interestingly, in each of their games since their last meeting, both the Hurricanes and Penguins had to fight for two points in overtime, with Carolina defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs thanks to Alexander Nikishin’s wrist shot, and Pittsburgh advancing to the shootout with the winning shot coming off the stick of Sidney Crosby.

in the crease

On Sunday, we’ll likely see a similar goaltender matchup as we’ve seen in all three of their games with each other this season.

If the alternating tandem continues as expected for the Hurricanes, Frederik Andersen will get the start for Carolina. This season, he has a save percentage of .872 with a goals-against average of 3.19 in a 12-11-5 record.

Meanwhile, Stuart Skinner is expected to be at the crease for the Penguins. His save percentage this season is .890, including a goals-against average of 2.85 in a 20-13-9 record.

storm game notes

The game against the Penguins is placed in the middle of their three-game road trip. After the game, they will head back across the border for a game with the Montreal Canadiens. This is their final three-plus game road trip of the regular season.

There has been no update on Shayne Gostisbeer, who was injured on March 6, and is expected to miss his eighth consecutive game.

Carolina’s fourth line has been quite impressive as of late. It is unknown if there will be any roster changes, such as adding Jesperi Kotkaniemi or Nicolas Deslauriers into the mix.

The Washington Capitals (35-27-8) conclude their final multi-game homestand of the 2025-26 season. They will host the Colorado Avalanche (43-13-10) for Sunday afternoon hockey at Capital One Arena.

The puck drops at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Sunday’s matinee is the fourth game of the Capitals’ current homestand. The team is 2-0-1 in the homestand heading into the finals.

The Capitals are coming off a 2-1 win over New Jersey on Friday night. Logan Thompson had a stellar performance in net while Ryan Leonard and Aliaksei Protas scored a goal each for Washington.

Thompson made 30 saves in net and came close to the shutout until New Jersey’s Jasper Bratt scored. Regardless, Protas had already sealed the win with an empty-netter.

With Friday’s win, the Capitals extended their point streak to four games (3-0-1), and are 10-5-1 since January 29. This record ties them with Philadelphia for the sixth-best record in the NHL over that span.

Goaltending, defense and the penalty kill have been key for the Capitals in their last 16 games. They have allowed the fourth fewest goals (2.50 per game), while the PK has been successful in 88.6 percent of its missions.

Meanwhile, Colorado enters Sunday’s game with the best record in the NHL. Most recently, however, the Avalanche ended a three-game slump (0-2-1) with a 4-1 win over Chicago on Friday night.

This will be the second and final match between the Capitals and Avalanche this season. Colorado won the previous meeting 5–2 at home on January 19.

Lines, Notes, and How to View Versus Leafs

On Friday night, the Carolina Hurricanes face the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final time this season at Scotiabank Arena. The season series is currently split between the two, with the November 9 game ending with Carolina’s 5–4 victory and the December 4 game ending with Toronto’s 5–1 victory.

The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT, but will not be available on ESPN+ due to NHLN’s exclusive national coverage. Local stations will still broadcast the game as usual.

On Wednesday, the Hurricanes had one of their most entertaining games of the season as they played their biggest divisional rival this season, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game ended with a 6–5 victory in overtime thanks to a goal from Sean Walker – his first overtime game-winner – and an incredible performance from Logan Stankoven’s line. You can read all about it here, it was an incredible game.

Meanwhile, the biggest news coming out of Leafs land recently is Auston Matthews’ injury and subsequent surgery to repair his knee. Since then, players and agents have been at war with the head of the player safety department, George Parros, who has defended Radko Gudas’ five-game suspension. It was quite dramatic to watch.

That being said, Matthews’ injury has lit a fire in the belly of the Leafs, who snapped a seven-game losing streak on the night of their captain’s departure and have collected three points in three games since.

in the crease

As for the Hurricanes, they will likely continue their streak, meaning the likely starter will be goaltender Brandon Bussey. So far this season, he has a save percentage of .895 with a goals-against average of 2.45 with a 25-6-1 record.

As far as the Leafs are concerned, they have been relying heavily on Josef Woll. Over the past five games, Anthony Stolarz has made only one start. With a two-day break between games before the matchup with the Hurricanes, Vol will likely be their man. This season, he has a save percentage of .905 with a goals-against average of 3.08 in a 14-12-5 record.

storm game notes

The Hurricanes’ game versus the Leafs will be the first of a three-game road trip, in which they will travel to Pittsburgh for another game with the Penguins, then return to the border for a matchup with the Montreal Canadiens. After this, they will get a final three-day break between games for the final time of the regular season.

Carolina got a rare day off from practice on Thursday before flying to Toronto. Thus far, there was no update on the status of Shayne Gostisbeer, who may miss his seventh consecutive game since suffering a lower body injury on March 6.

It’s unclear when Jesperi Kotkaniemi might get a chance to return to the lineup. Since the end of the Olympic break, he has appeared in only one game, March 4 vs. the Vancouver Canucks.

Devils Game 68 vs. Rangers; How to view lines, notes and more

It’s mid-March and the New Jersey Devils (34-31-2) and New York Rangers (28-31-8) are meeting for the second time this season. In fact, all three of their meetings are this month amid this condensed schedule of 2025-26.

Perhaps with an 84-game schedule next year, the meetings could be a little more extended and frequent.

Anyway, neither the Devils nor the Rangers are headed to the postseason this year. Still, the Devils (6-4-0) and Rangers (6-2-2) are trying to show a little fight.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to know vs Rangers

– The Devils and Broadway Blueshirts will face off for the second of three games as their regular season series concludes on March 31
On MSG.

-Jack Hughes has recorded 19 career goals against the Rangers, which leads all NHL skaters since making his NHL debut in 2019-

-His 32 career points against the Rangers are second only to D. Pastrnak (34) for all NHL skaters since 2019-20.

-Hughes’s 32 career points are his most against a single NHL opponent. The 2019 No. 1 overall draft selection New York’s Igor Shesterkin has 10 career goals, leading all other NHL skaters. Sam Reinhart is second with nine, while four others have eight.

—The Devils were 3–0–1 against New York last season, while last year’s series marked the first time in team history that the Devils did not give up a goal at home against the Rangers.

—Last season marked the first time since 2003–04 that the Devils defeated the Rangers twice in the same season.

-Hughes earned his fourth career hat trick in the first matchup of the 2025-26 Hudson River Rivalry

How to See Lines, Notes, Bullets, and Penguin Vs.

Just eight days away from their last meeting, the Carolina Hurricanes will once again face the Pittsburgh Penguins at Lenovo Center.

The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT.

What do the Hurricanes and Penguins’ previous games have in common? Both involved beatings in more ways than one.

For Carolina, Nicolas Deslauriers dropped the mitts with Mathieu Ollivier at center ice to spark some life into a Hurricane team that was struggling to find its game in the first half of the match. However, they suffered a 5–1 loss courtesy of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

As for Pittsburgh, Connor Clifton clashed with Jack Drury on Monday night before they beat the Colorado Avalanche 7-2 in Evgeni Malkin’s return from a five-game suspension. Glass.

At this time, it is unclear whether Sidney Crosby will play. According to PHN, he has recently practiced with additional forwards, but has spent the Penguins’ entire trip on the ice in the press box. …It feels like the calm before the storm.

in the crease

Since Brandon Bussey started in Columbus on Tuesday, it is almost certain that Frederik Andersen will play against the Penguins. In their last game against Pittsburgh, they scored in regulation, overtime and the shootout to lead the Hurricanes to victory. This season, he has a save percentage of .873 with a goals-against average of 3.14 in an 11-11-5 record.

Meanwhile, the Penguins have also employed the old alternate tandem strategy in net, which seems to be doing well for them. As Artur Silovs was on the crease in his last game, Stuart Skinner will likely get a rematch with the Hurricanes after taking his team to overtime with some very notable saves in their last meeting with Carolina. His save percentage this season is .891, including a goals-against average of 2.78 in a 20-13-8 record.

Shayne Gostisbeer is expected to miss his sixth consecutive game after suffering a lower body injury on March 6.

In the last game, Eric Robinson was benched to bring Deslauriers into the mix. It is expected that Robinson will return for Wednesday’s game.

The Hurricanes are currently on a two-match battle streak. Considering the playoff energy between the two Metropolitan Division rivals, it wouldn’t be shocking to see that number increase.

Devils Game 65, vs. Flames; How to view lines, notes and more

After a rare break in the schedule where the New Jersey Devils (32-30-2) had a three-game day, they were able to complete an equally rare two practices.

Tonight, the Calgary Flames (25-32-7) play at the Prudential Center in the middle of New Jersey’s current seven-game homestand.

After a four-game winning streak, the Detroit Red Wings put an end to the Devils’ latest advanced on-ice product, shutting out New Jersey on Sunday.

This lowered their playoff expectations to an even more unrealistic level and their chances of making the postseason dropped to 0.7%.

The Flames—who were nearly eliminated—were sold at the 2026 NHL trade deadline, leaving Nazem Kadri and Rasmus Andersen, two of their most rumored players, out.

Nevertheless, they brought some bodies to fill the void.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to Know vs Flames

– On January 19, 2026, the Devils and Calgary concluded their 2025–26 regular-season series after meeting out-of-conference foes.

—The Devils defeated Calgary north of the border 2–1 overtime.

-Simon Nemec scored the overtime winner, while Dawson Mercer scored the team’s first goal of the game.

-Jacob Markstrom recorded 21 saves on 22 shots against his former team on January 19.

-Captain Nico Hischier entered the contest with 13 career points (5G-8A) in 13 games against Calgary (1.08 points per game). Those stats also include one shorthanded goal and one game-winning goal. Seven of his 13 points (2G-5A) against Calgary were scored on the road.

-Former Calgary blueliner Dougie Hamilton has recorded 6 career points (1g-5a) in 6 career games with the Devils vs. the Flames.

How to See Lines, Bullets, and Blues Vs.

The Carolina Hurricanes will welcome the St. Louis Blues to Lenovo Center on Thursday, concluding their season series against them. He last played on January 13, where he was shut out on a three-and-out zilch by Blues goaltender Joel Hofer.

The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT.

Facing Team Carolina will be different from their previous meeting, as the Blues will be without captain Braden Schenn after being dealt to the New York Islanders at the deadline. Additionally, former Hurricanes co-captain Justin Faulk also departed St. Louis at the deadline, as he was sent to the Detroit Red Wings.

Of the four players acquired in trades, only Jonathan Drouin and Justin Hall have experience in the NHL.

On Tuesday, the Hurricanes played a remarkably wild game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the two teams exchanging leads all night until the Penguins overcame a two-goal deficit with six skaters in the final minutes to force overtime. I blame Neil Diamond!

Nonetheless, the Hurricanes managed to defeat them in the shootout and Alexander Nikishin made history as he broke the franchise goal record for a rookie defenseman.

between the pipes

Wednesday was a much-needed holiday for the storm, so there was no practice to base the actual launch on. However, that doesn’t stop me from trying my best to give you an educated guess. I care about you guys, and I know this is a big topic that we all want to know more about.

On Tuesday, Frederik Andersen took the crease against the Penguins and played honestly well. The Hurricanes have used him more since the Olympics, which will likely give him more playing time to build his confidence and prepare his body for the postseason. That being said, Brandon Bussey has been good, but as expected, his play has been a little shaky since returning from the Olympic break. Momentum is a huge force, and the three-week break disrupted that. Now he faces a new point of development in overcoming these struggles at the top level, something that every netminder deals with at the beginning of their NHL career.

If the alternative tandem continues, Bussey should start unless they opt to play him against the high-tempo, high-pressing Tampa Bay Lightning, against whom he performed well in the first game after the Olympic break. This season he has a save percentage of .898 with a goals-against average of 2.38 with a 25-4-1 record.

As for the Blues, they have relied heavily on Joel Hofer recently. However, I don’t think he will be the starter. They have played two games in a row and Thursday’s game will be the start of a back-to-back set that also includes travel. The other team in the set, the Edmonton Oilers, being a Western Conference rival, it is logical to think they would want Hofer to play that game.

Jordan Binnington will likely start against the Hurricanes. This season, with a 9-18-6 record and a goals-against average of 3.55, he has a save percentage of .868.

storm game notes

Ahead of Tuesday’s tilt against the Penguins, Rod Brind’Amour spoke with Hurricanes analyst Trip Tracy about the status of Shayne Gostisbeer, who has missed the last two games due to injury:

“I was hoping it wouldn’t last too long. I’m not sure it would be an extended period, but it certainly doesn’t look like he’ll be there tonight or possibly the next few games… He’s struggled with it all year.”

Additionally, in the last game, Nikolaj Ehlers left the ice in the first period due to a knee injury. However, he returned early in the second period and played the rest of the game. Still, he remains someone to keep an eye on going into the game against St. Louis.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Deslauriers is yet to debut for the Hurricanes. It’s unclear when he might enter the lineup. Nonetheless, he has continued to practice with the team and warm up before Tuesday’s game.

How to See Lines, Notes, Bullets, and Penguin Vs.

home at last!

The Carolina Hurricanes will begin a two-game homestand, starting with a matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night. We better get used to watching them, too – this will be the first of three games against the Penguins this month, two of which will be on the same strange road trip for them.

The Penguins will be without some notable players in the tilt. They recently lost Justin Brazeau to an upper-body injury, while Evgeni Malkin is serving his five-game suspension for a hit to the head of Buffalo Sabers captain Rasmus Dahlin.

Additionally, Sidney Crosby is indeed alive – and may join the Penguins on their road trip (though questionable for Tuesday night’s game).

While the Hurricanes are currently leading the Eastern Conference, the Penguins are only eight points behind Carolina in the Metropolitan Division standings. The upcoming weeks will be a test for the Hurricanes, as five of the 11 remaining games in March will be against divisional rivals, and 10 will be against conference rivals.

Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 7:00 pm EDT.

The previous road trip proved to be hit and miss for Carolina, as they only managed to win two of four games and lost defenseman Shayne Gostisbeer, a key component of their power play.

finally they found it

In their return to Raleigh, the Hurricanes have (officially) added a new component to the team in the form of Nicolas Deslauriers – a grinder and enforcer. …You know, he might help solve some problems against the influx of rivals in the coming weeks!

Deslauriers was cheerful when meeting with the press on Monday and seemed excited to be traded to the Hurricanes.

“My background is from signing here about four years ago, so it’s kind of a reunion,” he said after practice.

“Obviously, I got here pretty early – I was almost the first guy here – but, you know, I got to have a meeting with Rod and all the coaching staff.”

A father of four children, he also praised the family aspect of the Hurricanes organization.

“You just understand that it’s all about us; it’s all about family. [Brind’Amour]The first question was ‘How’s my family doing’, ‘If they’re coming down’…It’s an easy transition for me, and we’ll bring the family here at some point.’

what’s happening on the net

After some struggles with the puck during the road trip, Brandon Busey was seen working hard while practicing stickhandling during practice on Monday. That being said, Frederik Andersen had the starter’s crease and thus, the same is expected to be the case against the Penguins. Anderson has a save percentage of .873 this season, with a 9-11-5 record and a goals-against average of 3.16.

As for the Penguins, they have recently worked with a similar alternative tandem. If this pattern continues against the Hurricanes, Stuart Skinner will be in net. His save percentage this season is .890, including a goals-against average of 2.74 in a 19-13-7 record.

storm game notes

After practice on Monday, Brind’Amour was unable to provide an update on Gostisbehere, saying he did not yet know the severity of the injury.

Brind’Amour also said he was unsure when Deslauriers could get into the lineup, though he described it as a good problem to have.

The Hurricanes are 4-2-0 since returning from the Olympic break.

Devils Game 64 vs. Red Wings; How to view lines, notes and more

But can they make it five in a row?

The New Jersey Devils (32-29-2) host the Detroit Red Wings (35-21-7) in another back-to-back appearance this month. Earlier in the week, the Devils defeated the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs on consecutive nights.

Last night, they defeated their cross-town rival, the New York Rangers.

Now, the Dylan Larkin-less Red Wings come to Newark to see if they can stop the Devils’ four-game winning streak.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to Know vs. Red Wings

—Jersey is 21-5-1 when scoring first this season.

-New Jersey is having its best offensive performance this season, scoring six goals in a game for the first time this year.

-New Jersey extended its winning streak to four matches. The last time the Devils recorded a four-game winning streak was when the team recorded an eight-game winning streak from October 11, 2025, through October 26.

—Dawson Mercer recorded his 200th career point with his goal against the Rangers, while Luke Hughes’ assist on the goal was his 100th assist.

How to see lines, notes and flames

The Carolina Hurricanes will close out their Western Conference road trip on Saturday as they play the Calgary Flames for the final time of the regular season. The match comes one day after the trade deadline.

The game is scheduled to begin at 10 PM EST.

The Hurricanes were uncharacteristically quiet during the trade deadline and only traded for starter Nick Deslauriers at a fairly low price. Meanwhile, the flames were very active during and in the days leading up to Friday’s frenzy.

Throughout the week, the organization parted ways with Jeremy Poirier, Mackenzie Weegar, Jacob Battaglia and Nazem Kadri, while they welcomed back Gavin White, Ollie Maatta, Jonathan Castagna, Ryan Strome, Brennan Othman, Victor Olofsson and unsigned prospect Maximilian Curran.

Saturday’s game will undoubtedly see Brandon Bussey return to the net for the Hurricanes, just as Anderson played on Friday (and very well, if I might add). Bussey has a .901 save percentage with a goals-against average of 2.29 in a 25-3-1 record.

Meanwhile, the Flames will likely need Dustin Wolf to man the pipes as he will be the alternate goaltender. In his last game, Wolf was replaced by Devin Cooley after allowing four goals before the end of the first period. This season, Wolf has a save percentage of .898 with a goals-against average of 2.97 with a 17-23-3 record.

In the previous game against the Edmonton Oilers, the Hurricanes lost defenseman Shayne Gostisbeer to injury. Due to this, the Hurricanes have 13 forwards and five defensemen with both Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Mark Jankowski likely to play.

Montembeault starts, new forward lines

The Montreal Canadiens (33-18-9) are set to face the Anaheim Ducks (34-23-3), with puck drop scheduled for 9 p.m. ET.

The Habs will look to bounce back from a disappointing performance against another California club, the San Jose Sharks, on Tuesday. The good news is that the Canadiens managed to find the back of the net on five occasions, but this was overshadowed by their usual chaotic defensive setup, not to mention some questionable netminding, resulting in a 7-5 loss.

If the Canadiens hope to qualify for the playoffs without running their horses into the ground, as was the case last season, they will need every player on the ice moving in the same direction. In other words, they require fewer defensive failures, better support for defenders, and an increased sense of anticipation from goaltenders.

This doesn’t mean Montreal is in great danger of missing the playoffs, as their chances are around 80%, but they will need to curb some of their bad habits in the final stretch of the season. This includes lack of discipline, a recurring issue over the last few years.

Lineup changes, starting goalkeeper

Head coach Martin Saint-Louis will turn to veteran netminder Samuel Montembeault against the Ducks, however, it should be noted that the Habs will also play against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. This suggests we will see rookie goalkeeper Jacob Dobbs in action within 24 hours.

As far as the forward lineup is concerned, we will be treated to new combinations, or more accurately, old combinations that have a history of being successful. Juraj Slafkowski was returned to the first line, a smart move when we consider that no other player has done a better job with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield.

He will be replaced on the second line by Alex Newhook, who has done a great job providing secondary offense since returning to the game following a long-term ankle injury. He has scored two goals and two assists in three games, and will look to continue his excellent play alongside rookies Oliver Kapanen and Ivan Demidov.

Given that Slafkowski is back to his ideal form, Kirby Dach will be used on the third line as a winger, with Jake Evans and Zachary Bolduc completing the trio. This means that the only line-up that will remain unchanged will consist of the experienced Josh Anderson, Phillip Danault and Brendan Gallagher.

It remains to be seen if Mike Matheson will be in uniform, as he missed Thursday’s practice due to a maintenance day. If Matheson is unavailable, Arbor Zekaj is likely to return to the lineup.

Montreal Canadiens Projected Lineup

Cole Coffield – Nick Suzuki – Juraj Slafkowski

The Washington Capitals (31-23-7) move north of the border to finish off a back-to-back. They visit the Montreal Canadiens (32-17-8) on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.

The puck drops at 7:00 pm ET.

The Capitals have now won their last three games, with the first win coming just before the Olympic break. Now, they’ll look for their first four-game win in nearly three months.

On Friday night, the Capitals defeated Vegas 3-2 for their fifth consecutive win at home. This is their sixth win overall in the last seven matches.

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice and continues to lead the way in his return to the ice. Dubois has totaled five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in three games after missing 47 games.

Meanwhile, Jakub Chykrun recorded his 22nd goal of the season. This is the most by a Capitals defenseman in a single season since Mike Green (31) in 2008–09. Additionally, Chykrun was playing his 600th career game on Friday.

With the win over Vegas, the Capitals are now within two points of a playoff berth. They’ll also go into Saturday night as the only Eastern Conference team to have played more than 60 games this season.

The Capitals took care of the Canadiens in five games in the first round of last year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. This season, Washington has won each of the first two meetings against Montreal.

Meanwhile, the Canadiens are currently in fourth place in the tight Atlantic Division. Montreal has earned at least one point in each of its last six games (4-0-2), but gave up several leads in Thursday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Islanders.

Lines, Notes, Bullets, and How to Watch vs. Red Wings

The Carolina Hurricanes welcomed the post-Olympics NHL regular season with a resounding (and oddly familiar) win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. However, Saturday’s opponent, the Detroit Red Wings, also made a strong comeback in the game and defeated the Ottawa Senators in overtime.

Detroit has played remarkably well this season and currently sits in third place in the Eastern Conference standings, just six points behind Carolina.

The Hurricanes are scheduled to play the Red Wings on Saturday at 7:00 pm EST at Lenovo Center.

In their last matchup against each other, the Red Wings came out on top in overtime on the night of Sergei Federov’s jersey retirement thanks to Andrew Copp. However, it came with its share of drama, as Shayne Gostisbeer took a cross-check from behind by Coop, which opened the way for the game-winning goal.

Since the call was missed, the goal remained on the board and Gostisbehere and Sebastian Aho were both given 10-minute misconducts – the first in Aho’s NHL career.

The Hurricanes won’t be able to get a January game back, but they can finish February with a perfect record and extend their 11-game point streak to 12.

in the crease

It’s uncertain which goaltender the Hurricanes will run with on Saturday, but there is a significant possibility they may opt to keep Frederik Andersen between the pipes. He has an excellent record against the Red Wings in his time with the Hurricanes (4-1-1) and has played very well throughout the Olympics. He has a 3.26 goals-against average this season and a 7-10-5 record with a save percentage of .871, and he is currently sitting on a five-game point streak.

Meanwhile, for the Red Wings, the likely starting goalie is John Gibson. His save percentage this season is .905, with a goals-against average of 2.57 with a 23-12-2 record.

storm game notes

Following the game versus the Red Wings, the Hurricanes will embark on a four-game western road trip from which they will not return until after the NHL trade deadline.

In Thursday’s game against the Lightning, Logan Stankoven’s line went hot, scoring five points between the three of them. After some unfortunate positions for them on the score sheet, it was a welcome sight.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi remains the probable healthy player for Saturday’s game.

Devils Game 59, no seed; Lines, Notes, and How to See Penguin Vs.

Much like Jack Hughes and Team USA faced Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, the New Jersey Devils (28-28-2) visited the Pittsburgh Penguins (29-15-2) without Sidney Crosby.

Crosby was injured in Canada’s semi-final match against Finland and could not mount a tough challenge in the gold medal game. As a result, the Penguins placed him on injured reserve, and he would be absent for approximately four weeks.

The Devils are chasing the Penguins head-to-head in an unlikely quest for the playoffs. As the NHL schedule resumes after another boring, punchless loss last night, the Devils will be looking to find any kind of score tonight against Pittsburgh.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to Know vs Penguins

– The Devils and Steel City face off for the second of four matches this season after the Jersey side defeated the Pens in a 2-1 shootout win at the Rock on November 8.

-Arseny Gritsyuk scored the only goal in regulation against Pittsburgh on November 8, while Paul Cotter (GDG) and Jesper Bratt both scored in the shootout round.

-Jake Allen got the win between the pipes against Pittsburgh and stopped both of Pittsburgh’s shootout attempts.

—Bratt has 28 career points (8G-20A) in 31 career games against Pittsburgh, the second-most points of his career against a single opponent (vs. PHI – 29).

—Looking Back…Dawson Mercer earned his first career NHL hat trick against Pittsburgh in April of 2022–23.

-In points… Nico Hischier is first in the NHL with 687 face-off wins this season, while Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby is second with 649 face-off wins in 2025-26, per Jan. 7.

—The Devils and Penguins have both recorded three games without a win.

The Washington Capitals (29-23-7) officially returned to action after three weeks out. They are set to host the rival Philadelphia Flyers (25-20-11) on Wednesday night at Capital One Arena.

The puck drops at 7:00 pm ET.

The NHL is off for three weeks due to the Winter Olympics. Many players from the league represented their respective countries in the men’s hockey tournament.

Tom Wilson and Logan Thompson represented Team Canada and left Italy with a silver medal. Meanwhile, Martin Fehrváry played for Team Slovakia and finished fourth in the tournament.

With 65 points, the Capitals are tied with Columbus for ninth place in the Eastern Conference and fourth in the Metro Division. Washington is also four points behind Boston in the East and the Islanders in the Metro.

The Capitals have a total of 23 games remaining – the fewest in the entire league. Starting Wednesday, the team will begin a set of three games over four nights.

The Capitals entered the Olympic break as the only team in the league to have played 59 games. Washington also played 22 games between the NHL’s holiday break and Olympic break, the most in the league.

The last game the Capitals played before the Olympic break was a much-needed home win against Nashville on February 5. Pierre-Luc Dubois returned to the lineup after being absent for three months due to abdominal surgery.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia started the season strong, but slowed down at the break with three wins in 15 games. One of those wins came on February 3 against the Capitals in Philly.

The Capitals and Flyers are scheduled to meet twice later this season, on March 11 in Philadelphia and on March 31 in Washington.

Devils Game 58, NHL’s Back; How to View Lines, Notes, and Versus Sabers

The NHL is back, and so are the New Jersey Devils. The first night of game action following the Olympic break consisted of eight games. The Devils host the Buffalo Sabres, who face 25 playoff games.

Why like playoffs at this point?

Well, they are on the verge of losing their season with a 2.4% chance of reaching the playoffs. The Devils are 11 points out of a playoff position with little runway to make up any ground.

Jack Hughes—who was in Washington DC yesterday with Team USA, having been invited by the President of the United States to the State of the Union address—remains questionable in terms of his availability. However, barring an unknown injury, it would be surprising to see him sit out.

Washington is only a few hours away by car.

Let’s dive into tonight’s matchup.

What to know vs Sabers

—The Devils defeated Buffalo in a 5–0 shutout win on November 28 in Buffalo, but lost 3–1 on home ice about a month later.

– Jake Allen recorded 42 saves in the 5-0 shutout, a season-high for the veteran netminder.

Olympic quarterfinals, top prospects, lines

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed Tuesday.

montreal canadiens news

We’ve reached the Montreal Canadiens’ top 10 prospects, as voted by you Habs fans. Thanks to his impressive size and untapped potential, towering Kelowna Rockets forward Hayden Poupaneakis bursts into the top 10. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects: No.10 The Towering Paupanekis]

Juraj Slafkowski, Nick Suzuki and Oliver Kapanen should be in uniform Wednesday morning, representing their respective countries at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. The quarterfinals will start early, as Slafkovsky and Team Slovakia will face Team Germany at 6:10 a.m. [Canadiens Olympic Schedule: Three Players In Quarterfinals]

Suzuki anchored the third line between Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel and Florida Panthers winger Sam Reinhart at Team Canada practice on Tuesday.

As for Slafkowski, he has clearly been one of Italy’s best players, and is being recognized as such by many outlets.

The Habs were back in action Tuesday, although some players were missing from practice. Obviously, the Olympians were not in Brossard, but Patrik Laine, who was scheduled to return to play in the near future, missed practice with a lower body injury and is considered day-to-day.

Alex Newhook practiced, but was wearing a non-contact jersey. Newhook’s original recovery period was four months, meaning he should be ready in mid-March. That being said, his recovery is going pretty well, maybe even better than anticipated when the injury first occurred.

New goaltending coach Marco Marciano was also working hard, spending time working on the nuances of the game with his new students.

Shockingly or not, Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov were among the first players to hit the ice during practice.

Sportsknot Network

Calle Makar, Quinn Hughes, Miro Heiskanen, Roman Josi and Rasmus Dahlin are some of the best defensemen in the NHL. All play for their respective countries in the 2026 Winter Olympics, making them among the best blueliners in the world. And yet, during the preliminary rounds, none of them rank as top defenders in the offensive zone. That ranking goes to New Jersey Devils defenseman Simon Nemec. [New Jersey Devils]

The Toronto Maple Leafs were back on Tuesday for their first practice of the Olympic break. And there was some good news, as some of the walking wounded reported feeling better after the discharge. [Toronto Maple Leafs]

The first Pittsburgh Penguins practice since the Olympic break began Tuesday brought good news professionally and personally at the UPMC Lemieux Complex. [Pittsburgh Penguins]

This is the second meeting between the two teams within the past week. Chicago took the previous matchup 3-2 in a shootout in D.C. on Jan. 3.

That game was the first of the Capitals’ three-game homestand, where they won only the second game. The team scored seven goals to beat Anaheim 7-4 on Jan. 5.

The Capitals finished the homestand with a whimper as they fell to Dallas 4-1 on Wednesday. The team was unable to really get much going as they trailed 3-0 in the third period.

The only Capitals tally came late in the game when Alex Ovechkin recorded his 915th career goal.

Thankfully, Aliaksei Protas was activated off the IR and is expected to return for Friday’s game. Tom Wilson was then moved to the IR, but has been progressing after missing action.

Meanwhile, Chicago is currently on a four-game winning streak. They were able to string together victories for the first time since Nov. 15-18 when they beat the Capitals nearly a week ago.

More importantly, Connor Bedard is expected to make his big return for Chicago on Friday night. The 2023 No. 1 pick had missed the previous 12 games with an upper-body injury.
